This is literally the only Final Fantasy game I've ever played. I don't know if it's the aesthetics or the poetics of your brief visit to the capitol city of Vector, but there's a clear parallel to other fiction that I'd been engrossed in over the years that had me captivated by just how dark and horrific this depiction of industrialization was. Not to mention the aftermath of this arc had me witness possibly the most depressing fishing minigame of all time. I'm not sure why The Devil's Laboratory is so catchy to me. It's not the theme song of the primary antagonist. It's not a cool world-map exploration theme. It's not even really a cutscene song. It's just an area theme that stands out from the rest of the soundtrack in how it's built to be part of the scenery itself. Having those mechanical sounds built into the song as you travel by conveyor belt around sinister and arcane machinery really just sells the idea that you've truly entered an area so oppressively artificial that even the very atmosphere here is tainted by it. It's great! I knew if I was going to make an arrangement of this that the percussion and sound effects would be the primary element rather than secondary... ...I may have gotten a little carried away along the way, but I know I had fun working on this either way.

Cheyene Kastravo (Assassin/spy)

Raised on the streets, Cheyene learned to fend for herself at every turn. But after she became a hired gun, her has identity slowly disappeared to the point that people can't track her at all. The opposite to a certain deer girl, who's tracks are all over the place.

She doesn't have a main goal in mind. As far as she's concerned, you must complete your mission, no questions asked.

She wields a revolver as her main weapon, but will often fist fight and grapple her opponents before finishing them off. To perform her martial arts attacks, you must press buttons in complex patterns to fight off drones of enemies. Cheyene also carries three more items: - a grappling hook with a chain for scaling heights - a grenade to throw at enemies - a map of the city

The True Reckless Caverns

I've been bothered by the music gremlins into remixing Mischievous Caverns

I have a general idea of what I wanted to compose. However, when I tried to implement the last part, I had trouble.

So I made this track first.

IM PRETTY HAPPY WITH HOW THIS TURNED OUT. i did some new stuff by adding in sound effects and editing the video itself with visual effects and clips from the game! (there's a version linked in the description and pinned comment that's just the music without the effects)

extended that 19EDO song from a few months ago! this was a huge pain in the ass because I know jack shit about mixing and wanted to make a song that didn't fucking hurt your ears (like river styx)

Yuzo Koshiro's template for stratum music in the early Etrian titles always interested me. 1-2 1-2 3 being one of the most prevalent structure for the songs in order to make sure they all get stuck in your head but still have that neat little flourish before they start back again. I was also enamored with the world the games took place in and the visual themes each of the original games played with. Etrian II's seasonal themes were all lovely, but the fifth stratum being a flying sky castle evoked some additional Ghibli vibes the giant tree alone didn't. One thing I enjoy while playing with the themes from the older DS era games is listening to isolated aspects of each track and exploring minimalist routes that can draw out different moods. You'd be surprised how easy it is to miss certain details when all the instruments are playing at once. You might also be surprised how much fun it can be to add a few extra channels in there for additional detail.
