Green characters are often hotheaded and brash, unafraid to speak their mind. They make for excellent leaders and teachers, and tend to be most devoted to a specific field, which they do well in. They have a lot of confidence in themselves, and although they can’t always see themselves positively, they are good about respecting themselves. They have a lot of common sense but are equally likely to strategically plan something out as to rush in on an impulse. They often have to work hard to get others to respect them, and sometimes receive less of it when people find out who they are. Still, they are not afraid to make others uncomfortable by being themselves, and are unlikely to waver when someone wants them to change against their will. They can be brash and loud, but also very quiet and secretive. Their humor can be a bit rude, and they don’t always display friendship and affection to the people they care about in the most conventional ways. However, they’re quite easygoing, witty, and fun-loving people. They don’t like when people are flighty and prefer to work with people who don’t quit and stand their ground. They stand out from others, both because of the way they approach the world, and because of how skilled they tend to be at what they do. How to prep for Lammas ❂

I know witchy fellas, it’s boiling hot & sunny out there. But we gotta put it in the effort. All together. Till the end. Till Lammas.

Briefly explained, Lammas or ‎Lughnasadh opens the harvest season around August 1st and our ancestors would know the perfect timing of it by watching the rise of the star Sirius at the dawn after a long while not showing. This sabbat originated by the Celts whom used to propitiate Lugh to ensure sunny weather and a fruitful harvest. He was their god of Light, excellently proficient in all arts & protector of thieves, travelers and merchants.  Moving to the southern areas, this celebration was still existing in a more earthy practical variant: mother Earth, plants, fresh produce, seeds and grains were the actual focus. These other people couldn’t care less about Lugh. They only cared about showing gratitude to Nature as a whole, often by baking the first LOAF MASS of the season (Lammas, a bread loaf) after months of summer break - we should stop baking at home from Beltane day till Lammas day, unless we’re home-based bakers and do that for a living;)

So, as usual, in this post I’m going to give you tips & ideas to prep for august 1st. Which means these are not things you should do on the very day, but BEFORE. Don’t rush last minute darlings. We can do this. 

Let’s get readayyyy. ✽

1. Local farmers’ markets should become a routine. Ok, hands down we all need the supermarket to survive on a daily basis but you can surely minimize your shopping list, so you can go buy fresh produce at some farmers’ market. Buy organic stuff there, not at the mall. This is a good easy way to re-establish a direct contact with Earth and welcome earthy energies into your life. Plus, it’s going to be a refreshing walk every time.

2. Improve the lighting in your house/room. Besides Samhain, this is by far the best time of the year to purchase new lamps, led lights, lanterns; fix bulbs that are out, remove useless/broken curtains, buy candles, add fairy lights everywhere etc... Being a metaphor of the sunny weather, daylight and artificial lighting in general must be of primary importance in your environment. Enhance natural lighting during the day, set up a nice and diffused lowlight illumination system at night. Don’t forget your backyard ‘cause...

3. You should take good care of your garden. I don’t care how busy you are, we all have at least 5 spare minutes to trim out dead leaves from our plants. If you own a piece of land or have a rather big veg garden, please don’t forget about it. Pay special attention to your plants/trees, do a little bit of cleaning every day, pick what’s ripe, cut out dead leaves, get creative with your lawn mower, water the vases, work the ground... The goal is to have a beautiful, curated garden by august 1st. But if you don’t have a garden or similar...

3.2. Buy your fav aromatic plant & look after it. Choose herbs that you prefer adding to your meals (if you’re a diy pro or make your own soaps etc.. feel free to use that fragrant plant in your products), so that you’ll be able to use it quite often without forcing yourself. I personally do it with basil. Basil is my daily go-to, I love its smell and taste. Again, the goal is to buy a plant in July and prove to Mother Nature that you can nurture it properly until at least august 1st. Get in touch with the “green world” and upgrade your basic skills. In other words...

4. Try to excel in every project/activity you start. Remember what you read earlier? Blame Lugh for this one. Lammas day is like a test: if you want Nature to be by your side during harvest time, you must earn its trust through proving that you’re able to achieve great results - because you’re a hard worker.  July is about learning, attending classes, practicing, studying. My advice would be to not start a bunch of random projects now: be picky and commit to only one or a few. Be honest with yourself, modest with timing and consistent in everyday practice so that in august you’ll be skilled enough to unleash your best potential. This is your time to shine!

5. Do your research on baking bread. Yes, exactly. Read recipes, articles, books etc... On Lammas day you want to have fun baking your first bread loaf of the season, so you’d better be prepared. It’s a fun experience even if you’re not a pro baker, at least you can try a new hobby to fill your free morning/evening. But baking a beautifully decorated, tasty, fragrant bread loaf would take Lammas to the next level though.

If you don’t own an oven, purchase a small electric one for less than 50$. It’ll be useful to cook other foods in the future without stressing the hell out of your microwave. 

*for our celiac fellas*: grains and gluten are clearly off-limits for you. However, Lammas’ celebration involves CORN as well. Try to make your gluten-free dough with corn flour, rice flour or other ingredients that are suitable for you. Focaccia, polenta and pizza doughs are also suitable for the occasion.

6. Include apples, grapes and corn in you cosmetics or in your diet. Since these fruits are in season, why not take heed of their benefits? Simply buy things like apple shampoo, grape lip balm, apple snacks, grape masks... A BAG OF CRISPY POP CORN...These are valid examples. You have a wide range of choice, you’ve got the powahhh.

7. Grab a book and a glass of Albariño/Pinot Noir/Rosé. That’s how you pamper yourself before Lammas. A rocking chair in the garden, proper lighting for reading, a cushion, your fav book and a glass of fine wine. 

Alternatively, you can elegantly snack on grapes or sip some super refreshing apple juice from a chic crystal goblet!

8. Develop a grounding routine. For those who are new to the grounding concept, I’ll break it down real quick. We’re always moving, on the go, running, rushing, driving, working out, traveling, walking, cleaning, fidgeting, passively entertained, distracted by screens or social media etc... The practice of grounding promotes the exact opposite to reach inner balance and fulfillment. Basically, it’s very good to be swift and active, but being incapable of sitting still while quietly dealing with ourselves is a huge, major problem. Imagine rooting yourself into the soil: you can lay down or sit comfortably on the ground without a mat and really feel the Earth underneath. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, choose a meditation method that you like, visualize yourself being as static and peaceful as a tree... Or simply be. You’ll find a way to contemplate these OFFLINE moments away from photos, screens, sounds, people... This routine should take 10-20 minutes of your day. Make sure it takes place in nature, or alternatively in places where there’s actual grass, ground or nearby your (aromatic) plants so you can touch them if you need to.

9. Get creative with corn magic and corn art. Lammas has a solid tradition of corn use for various purposes. As you’re prepping for the big day, start featuring corn kernel/cobs in your magic. If you don’t practice - which is totally fine - carry a small amulet bag with corn inside with you. If you’re an artist or crafter, paint the kornel or use cobs for artwork!

10. Be out in the sunlight, sun bathe or simply breathe fresh air, get outside, enjoy all things outdoors :)

Seeing the Light - Evaluation (1/2)

What was the project theme and what did you think of it?

The theme of this brief was called ‘Seeing the Light’. When I originally saw the brief my first thought was “I have my work cut out for me”, as a lot of tasks in the brief were things I was unfamiliar with. I’ve never used Lightroom/Bridge, I didn’t even know what modulating devices were and I haven’t used Tumblr since I was 14. When I looked further into the brief and got started with my research I started really enjoying the whole premise of the project. Without light there is no photo, and a lot of the time during photography I completely overlooked how light can be manipulated to make for a more interesting photo. It wasn’t until my first shoot until I realized there are so many things you can do with light alone for photography.

 What part of the project did you enjoy the most/found most interesting (pre-production, production or post production)?

Well, I hated planning because the thought of writing a plan down and having nothing go to accordingly scared me, and I’m not the biggest fan of research, so I would have to say production was my favourite with post production being the most interesting aspect. Working with new models was really fun and it challenged my people skills, being able to communicate how I want the model to pose. Editing was really fun for me, developing my editing skills as I go was really nice to watch and learning Lightroom is going to be really helpful for the future.

 What new techniques have you experienced?

So many really, like I said I’ve never touched a diffuser and barely used reflectors so using a different modulating device per shoot was a good experience. I also learned you can use nature and surroundings as natural flags, gobos etc. I used overcast skies as a diffuser and leaves as a flag which I would’ve never thought to do before.

 What technique would you like to develop further?

I would definitely like to improve my editing skills. I didn’t realise how much of a skill editing is and its something I’d like to do more research on and practice with. Learning about colour correction too.

 Which photographers did you research throughout this project?

Firstly, it was Joe McNally. I watched quite a few interviews on his technique and found him to be quite inspirational with the advice he gave new photographers, encouraging perseverance and always looking for different techniques. Then when we started in the studio I was introduced to Martin Schoeller and his techniques using strip lighting for portraits. I’ve never done portraiture so this was a fun exercise.

 How have they influenced your photographs?

I would say the task with Martin Schoeller made me think a lot more about focal points. Again this was all part of the learning process, seeing how eyes are detrimental to an image. Joe McNally was always good at capturing the essence of a person through a photograph. I think I tried to apply his technique more in my final shoot as I wanted it to be candid, natural and a little silly, matching the models personality. I liked Schoeller’s serious approach to photographing models, so I think I applied that to my earlier shoots.

 Which technique did you enjoy the most?

Considering my flagging shoot was my favourite I think that became one of the most interesting to use. I really liked using reflectors too (especially the gold side to fake a mid-day golden hour)

 Reflect on the feedback you have received how has this helped you to develop?

I haven’t really gotten much feedback besides being in the studio to be honest. In studio I’ve been told my images aren’t as sharp or in focus on the eyes as they should be and those comments helped to ensure I properly use focal points in my photography, taking time to line up shots. I will say it filled me with pride when Heather was analyzing an image from my first shoot and ended up liking it. It boosted my confidence so much and allowed me to stop being so hard on myself with my shoots.

 What do you feel is the most successful part of your project and why?

I feel the part that went the best was probably a combination of the locations I found and the models I used. Each location seemed to fit the theme of my shoot really nicely and was convenient enough to shoot in without any disturbances. The models were so lovely to work with and took direction well.

 Did you encounter any problems in your project?

So many. Under exposed photos, forgetting theme, photos not in focus, not being able to pose models effectively for the light, sticking to plans and the weather tormenting me. Apart from that… all good.

 How did you learn from them and how did they affect your final images?

Well I learned to control my settings a lot more and stop getting in the habit of rapid fire shooting without checking what I’m shooting first. That’s why I found problems with exposure and focus, I was rushing myself because I was nervous about losing light. That’s another thing I guess, I have to consider time of day for the winter months as light is lost so quickly.

Seeing The Light Evaluation

For the seeing the light brief, we had to plan and create 4 final portraits using different modulating devices such as reflectors, flags and diffusers. We were also asked to show 4 different viewpoints, apertures, compositions and focal lengths. 

Strengths & Skills

This project has taught me many significant skills, through research of my own and from online classes I can now read images much better than before and can determine the lighting used in portraits due to features such as catchlights in the eye. By experimenting with the reflectors, I was able to bounce light onto the models face and further enhance the images, a skill I will be able to use in all of my future shoots. 

As well as being able to read different lighting used in an image, I can recognise good lighting for taking photos as well as knowing the difference between the effect of hard light in a portrait versus soft, even light  Learning this skill has made me more confident in taking properly exposed images, with interesting lighting and not just flat lighting.

For me, I think I was successful in achieving what was asked in this brief as I really enjoy my final Images. In my final 4 portraits, I have used different qualities of light which has then created 4 very different looking images. My favourite shoot I did was during the sunset as I love the effect the warm sun has on the models face. Weaknesses 

Looking back at this project there is a few things I would have done differently and which I will aim to improve on next time. For example, during one of my shoots it was raining the whole time I was shooting which distracted me a lot as I wasn't focused on the little details which make a successful image, as I was worrying about my camera getting wet. This meant I wasn't able to get all the shots that I had planned.

Finally, another thing which held me back during this brief was not having an assistant to help me. Due to the current circumstances, I couldn't ask anyone to help hold reflectors/flags. This was inconvenient as I had to hang my reflectors on a tripod which constantly got caught in the wind and sometimes wouldn't reflect the light onto the models face as much as I wanted it to.

Removing recodes from the pool effectively killed my motivation to recode anyone nowadays; the recodes I do have all did a pretty good job at getting me through the story.

I didn’t have a lot of natural non-Pact of Fellowship Zs, but what I did have (Annu, mainly) were pretty useful! Still, I definitely had the feeling that I had better luck with the Companions of Truth at times...

They pre-emptively spawn two twisters in the spaces adjacent to them. On the first turn, they’ll use Negate Circle > Shake Up > move, while summoning two new twisters. Next turn, they use Energy Emission. Shake Up is mainly the more irritating/possibly dangerous move as it can knock units into the twisters or another enemy’s range of attacks.

As mentioned, the damage from twisters is physical; it can make it a bit dangerous or unsafe to pincer the enemy depending on where its twisters are, but on the other hand, this can be mitigated with Olber^’s Physical Capsules. As a reference, without any capsules absorbed, Bonna was taking around 1500-1600 damage when moving over a twister, but ingesting some capsules brought the damage to a significantly more manageable 300-400.

It’s not really fair, of course – but the poor chief’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. Of course, our party isn’t malevolent. They wouldn’t doom a nation to save their own hides.

Seeing Alika there instead of Rikken as a bow user may raise some questions. The reason she’s there is solely for the chance of getting skill boosts.

It starts glowing at low HP, but hell if I know what it does. Beyond that, it wasn’t all that big a trouble, in all honesty.

March 31st, 2020 // Economic Inequality with Guest Speaker George Catlin 

Prompt: In economic terms, what forces tend toward convergence, and what forces tend toward divergence?  Which forces does Piketty believe likely to prevail? Why? In Piketty’s view, how might democracies regain control over capitalism?

Throughout Thomas Piketty’s book, Capital in  the 21st Century, he discusses in great detail why socio-economic inequality has risen immensely in the past few decades globally, as well as nationally. He states that the divergence forces are dominating convergence forces rapidly. Piketty describes divergence as the return to capital being larger than economic growth rates in more economies which then creates a sort of never-ending cycle where the cap of income inequality between individuals that inherited wealth and those who didn’t increase. In our cohort’s discussion Regina and Rob both presented of soci-econmic inequalities in the United States. I really enjoyed how they discussed the never-ending cycle and how we see this in our daily lives. They brought up how now (living in the U.S. during COVID-19) more than ever we see this through the ways in which our system is crumbling without the working class doing their jobs. It’s shedding light on how the U.S.’s version of capitalism that is currently in place is only feeding the never-ending cycle Piketty describes, where divergence is on top.

Piketty describes the convergence forces, which the divergence forces are currently dominating over, as knowledge diffusion. At first this was a bit confusing for me to understand what he meant by “knowledge diffusion”. In the book Piketty states that, “The main forces for convergence are the diffusion of knowledge and investment in training and skills. The law of supply and demand, as well as the mobility of capital and labor, which is a variant of that law, may always tend towards convergence as well, but the influence of this economic law is less powerful than the diffusion of knowledge and skill and is frequently ambiguous or contradictory in its implications. Knowledge and skill diffusion is the key of the overall productivity growth as well as the reduction of inequality both within and between countries.” After reading this though, I was still a bit confused because of the language Piketty was using, so I was able to find an article that broke it down in a way I could understand better. Dany Bahar commented on this by saying, Piketty got this part right. It is well known that productivity differences for the most part explain differences in income, and productivity can be fueled by acquiring more and better knowledge. “The problem is, however, that knowledge, despite having all the characteristics of a public good, does not behave as such. The point of Piketty’s method of describing this, is to show that we must understand that the knowledge we need to spread to help close this gap must happen locally, and it doesn’t happen overnight. But if democracy is to regain control over the globalized financial capitalism of this century, it must also invent new tools, adapted to today’s challenges.” In my opinion I think this beautifully captures what Piketty is trying to get at in regards to what needs to happen to democracies to be able to prevail against capitalism. He thinks that a global tax on capital would be able to solve many issues we’ve been discussing. I think it is really interesting how in this chapter Piketty discusses how a global tax on capital is a very utopian idea and it is pretty hard to imagine because I was thinking the same thing...being born in 1998, it’s wild and strange to even picture a world where such policy is enforced. What would that look like day-to-day? This is just one of the many questions I was left pondering with this idea.

After reading this and listening to our class discussion, I really took some time to reflect on how I envision the future and how my futures thinking methods of finding solutions can sometimes be fogged due to the fact that because I’ve never grown up in a world where capitalism doesn’t exist, I often limit my thinking of what this world would look like without it. Specifically, what the U.S. would look like if it’s oppressive systems of capitalism were abolished or atleast reformed properly.

As Regina pointed out in our cohort discussion...the revolution needs to happen, it must, and it will.
