Top Femslash Ships Bracket: Seeding

As promised, we're back with a new bracket! However, we're doing things a little differently this time. Rather than taking the data for seeding directly from a ranked list, we want you guys to be a part of the seeding process!

This survey contains a list of over 100 ships, pulled from centreoftheselights's AO3 ship stats for 2023 and 2024, and Tumblr's year in review, as well as a few submissions that are not on either list but are considered iconic or historically important. It asks two questions: which ships have you heard of, and which ships do you view positively? The final seeding for the bracket will be based on a ratio of these numbers, from which we will rank the top 96!

A few notes regarding this survey:

Please answer as honestly as you can! Yes, that does mean going through a long list of ships twice in order to check all the relevant boxes, but such is the price we pay for accurate data.

Please only submit the survey once! While we normally delight in voter fraud, artificially boosting your favorite ship in this survey will only skew the results with no benefit; in fact, it could potentially hurt your chances in the actual bracket!

We’ve rolled out dashboard tab configuration options to everyone. We’re still working on adding the ability to change the default tab between Following and For You. Also, if you were in the experiment and had enabled certain tabs, like Popular Reblogs and Blog Subs, please note that those settings have moved back to the Tumblr Labs settings, instead of being configurable options in the new config screen.

We’ve deployed some performance and stability improvements for browsing feeds through the site, including the ability to truly handle endless scrolling. If you disabled endless scrolling in your dashboard preferences on web because it was laggy, give it another try! If you disabled it because you like paged browsing better, keep on keeping on! You’ll still benefit from these improvements.

We’re working on improving search across Tumblr, and one of our latest experiments is to try surfacing posts in search results based on image recognition. If you search for something on Tumblr and it returns a bunch of images that aren’t actually related to what you searched for, and have no other text or tags to indicate why you’re seeing it, please send us some feedback via Support about it, providing the search term you used and what posts didn’t make sense.

In the post editor on web, you can now choose to convert a link block down to an inline text link if you’d like, via the meatball menu on the link block that’s generated when you paste a link.

We’re shortening the ask button label maximum length to 26 characters, and providing better error messages when exceeding that limit.

Replies/reblogs/likes from blogs that have blocked the author, or the author has blocked, will no longer appear in the notes view on your posts for anyone.

We’re now filtering asks and submissions from blogs that have blocked the receiver.

In the post editor on web, we’ve fixed a variety of issues with copying and pasting and selecting text.

Clicking to like a post while logged out, and then logging in, now brings you back to the post, instead of bringing you to Explore.

When uploading media in the post editor on the web, the “Post” button stays disabled until the media finishes uploading.

Removing a reblog or reply from the notes on your post removes the associated activity item as well.

Folks can no longer mention blogs that they’ve blocked or are blocked by — this was already covered in most circumstances, but we’ve fixed a few rare cases that have popped up where people have gotten around it.

(Someone has done this before, but that blog's been inactive for over a year.)

Assume all characters posted do pick up the Death Note and are capable of using it, even if something in canon would prevent that in normal cases. Thus, "no because they wouldn't pick it up" and "no, they physically can't pick it up/write/read" are not valid answers.

"Yes" answers imply they decided on their own they're taking on the ongoing role of Kira and this is their motive. If they would kill, say, only a few specific people who wronged them, pick the "few people, then stop" answer, even if that's their motive for killing those few people. If one of the motives applies but they wouldn't do it without someone getting them to, choose "only if someone else convinced them to".

No rules for who you can or can't submit as of currently, except that they should be known enough to find a picture of them or a picture to represent them. (i.e. no OCs unless they're popular enough to be googled and come up right away; no real life people without some degree of fame. If the person you're submitting doesn't come up easily on a web search, your submission may be rejected.) And again, please provide the source.

In the world of A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) by Sarah J. Maas, we encounter the tale of Feyre Archeron—her struggles, her growth, and her eventual role in the politics and power struggles of the Night Court. But beneath the fantasy, romance, and magic, there are unsettling parallels between Feyre’s story and the themes George Orwell laid out in 1984. While Maas likely didn’t intend to mirror Orwell’s dystopian warnings, the similarities are impossible to ignore. Feyre is not just the savior of the Night Court; she is also a victim of manipulation, control, and brainwashing, much like Orwell’s protagonist Winston Smith.

Introduction: The Hidden Parallels

At first glance, ACOTAR and 1984 seem worlds apart. Orwell’s novel presents a dystopian society where the government, under Big Brother, uses fear, surveillance, and propaganda to control every aspect of life. ACOTAR, on the other hand, is a fantasy series set in a world of faeries, with romantic subplots and the high stakes of political intrigue. However, beneath the glittering surface of Maas’ fictional world lies a deeply disturbing undercurrent of control, manipulation, and forced loyalty—one that eerily mirrors the mechanics of Orwell’s totalitarian regime.

Feyre, though not living under a literal dictatorship, undergoes a process of reeducation and mental conditioning that is shockingly similar to what Orwell describes. She begins as a free-thinking individual with her own set of values and beliefs, but as the series progresses, her autonomy and agency are systematically stripped away, leaving her loyal to the Night Court and its ruling elite, much like Winston’s eventual submission to Big Brother.

The Argument: Feyre’s Journey as Brainwashing

From the beginning, Feyre is established as someone who fights for survival, her family, and her independence. In the first book, we see her resisting the magical and political forces that seek to control her, much like Winston resists the Party in 1984. However, over the course of the series, particularly after her move to the Night Court, Feyre’s resistance crumbles. She is slowly but surely brainwashed into accepting a new reality—one that benefits those in power, mainly Rhysand and his inner circle.

In 1984, Winston is tortured and reprogrammed by O’Brien, a figure who presents himself as an ally but ultimately serves the oppressive regime. Rhysand, in many ways, mirrors O’Brien’s role. He positions himself as Feyre’s savior, rescuing her from the clutches of Tamlin (who, despite his flaws, initially fought to protect Feyre in his own way). But Rhysand’s method of “saving” Feyre is not as benevolent as it seems. He isolates her from her past, her family, and her previous values. Under his influence, Feyre gradually comes to adopt his worldview, just as Winston adopts the Party’s beliefs.

In 1984, the Party controls reality by controlling thought. It rewrites history, eliminates dissent, and conditions its citizens to accept whatever truth is most convenient for maintaining power. In ACOTAR, Rhysand and the Night Court engage in similar tactics. Velaris is portrayed as a perfect utopia—an untouched, idyllic city that must be protected at all costs. Feyre is repeatedly told that Velaris is the pinnacle of what society should be, and anyone who disagrees (like those from the Hewn City or other courts) is deemed an enemy. The propaganda is subtle but insidious, convincing Feyre that the Night Court’s way of life is not only superior but the only way.

Rhysand as the Manipulative Leader

Rhysand’s control over Feyre mirrors Big Brother’s control over Winston. He plays the part of the benevolent ruler, always positioning himself as the one who “saved” Feyre, first from Under the Mountain and then from Tamlin. However, his methods of manipulation are far more sophisticated than mere physical coercion. Rhysand uses emotional manipulation, guilt, and a savior complex to entrap Feyre in his web of loyalty. He repeatedly tells her that he is giving her “freedom,” all while subtly guiding her into a role that benefits him and his court.

This is strikingly similar to how the Party in 1984 claims to protect its citizens by controlling them. The Party tells people that true freedom lies in submitting to Big Brother, that by giving up their autonomy, they are protecting themselves from harm. Similarly, Rhysand convinces Feyre that she is free when, in reality, she is being shaped into the perfect tool for his political agenda. Feyre’s transformation into High Lady of the Night Court is not an act of liberation; it’s a calculated move to ensure her absolute loyalty to Rhysand and his cause.

Rhysand rewrites Feyre’s personal history just as the Party rewrites history in 1984. He convinces her that her time with Tamlin was solely abusive and that her loyalty to him was misguided, even though Feyre had once loved and trusted Tamlin. This rewriting of her past serves to break any lingering attachment she might have had to her former life, leaving her entirely dependent on Rhysand. Much like how Winston is made to betray Julia, Feyre’s love and loyalty to Tamlin are erased, replaced with complete devotion to the Night Court.

Surveillance and Control

Another striking parallel between ACOTAR and 1984 is the theme of surveillance. In Orwell’s world, citizens are constantly watched by the Party, with no privacy or space to form independent thoughts. In ACOTAR, Rhysand similarly invades Feyre’s mind through his mental powers. He has the ability to speak to her in her thoughts, to read her emotions, and to manipulate her dreams. This constant intrusion into Feyre’s mental and emotional space mirrors the Party’s surveillance tactics in 1984. Feyre cannot truly escape Rhysand’s influence because he is always present in her mind, shaping her thoughts and guiding her actions.

This level of control is subtle but effective. Feyre begins to doubt her own thoughts and feelings, questioning whether her memories of Tamlin were ever real, whether her previous life had any meaning. Rhysand becomes her only source of truth, just as Big Brother becomes the only source of truth in 1984. The result is a Feyre who is no longer capable of independent thought, who has been so thoroughly conditioned by Rhysand’s influence that she believes his version of events without question.

The Conclusion: Feyre’s Loss of Autonomy

By the end of the series, Feyre is no longer the independent, free-thinking individual she was at the start. She has been completely absorbed into the Night Court’s ideology, just as Winston is absorbed into the Party. Her identity, once defined by her own choices and beliefs, is now entirely tied to Rhysand and his court. She has become a willing participant in the very system that controls her, much like Winston’s final submission to Big Brother.

In conclusion, the parallels between ACOTAR and 1984 are hard to ignore. Both stories feature protagonists who are gradually stripped of their autonomy, manipulated by powerful figures into accepting a new reality. While Feyre’s journey is framed as one of empowerment, it is, in many ways, a tragic tale of brainwashing and control. Much like Winston in 1984, Feyre is reeducated to serve the interests of those in power, her resistance crushed under the weight of emotional manipulation and psychological conditioning. What Maas presents as Feyre’s liberation is, in fact, her submission to a new form of control—one that is just as insidious as the Party’s dominance over Winston’s world.

Old Painful Memories 6.5🟢

Shamura slides the heavy sliding door shut to a special room behind his library, looking behind it to make sure no one followed him

“Okay, I wasn’t followed. The last thing I need is one of them accessing this room without my permission again…”.

He thought. It’s been sealed off from the rest of the palace after “the Event” but due to Narinder having to be sealed as well, the space hasn’t been used in a long time. Possibly forgotten by the other bishops as of now. It was a relatively medium sized room, holding all of the old bishop’s memorabilia. And he’s not talking about Narinder.

“…Hello my love…”

Shamura said softly. The room, despite being sealed off, was still occasionally covered in spider webs and mountains of dust. Sometimes a critter or two enters and makes a nest there. He doesn’t bother them, the old bishop had never minded them before. He picks up a feather duster from the corner of the room and starts cleaning like he usually does.

“Don’t want you to be in a dirty room now…”

He said to the statue. In the middle of the room sat a huge statue of an hedgehog /pangolin woman with her arms outstretched, wearing similar clothes to them and a warm smile on her face. This is Bishop Gaia.

The lost Bishop, as his people retold her tale. Gaia was a Goddess of Charity, always put people ahead of her own needs and wants. A very caring and kind Bishop, especially to the other bishops. Someone who wouldn’t survive without Shamura’s intervention that one faithful day.

“I never regretted that day I took you and your people in…you know that?”

He sits down and remembers that day vividly.

Bishop Gaia, a freshly made Goddess was taking her small amount of followers to another safe place. They lost a majority of their Clan (she never liked the word Cult, so she used Clan. A more friendly term) in a fight with another God, and running into another one was not ideal.

“Stay away!”

She shouted, branding her power in her hands. Her power was like a Magic fire that she can turn into fireballs at will, However, with no strength left, she knew there will be more casualties. Shamura’s people surrounded hers.

“You are completely surrounded by my cult. It is useless to resist”

Shamura said. He scans the group, realizing the demographic of his group compared to the demographic of hers. His cult only includes strong followers and anyone who can hold a weapon. When he loses a follower, it’s hard to replace.

Gaia’s Clan included the weak and vulnerable, submissive Followers, families with small children, orphans, and some elderly. It was a more diverse group but less could fight. Gaia noticed this too, and used this to her advantage. She had to.

“Wait, before you act, let’s talk! Maybe we can make a deal!”

Some of her followers got scared, thinking she was going to barter them for the sake of the group. But no such thing happened. So Shamura and Gaia sat down and spoke.

“Your Clan needs more individuals, my clan needs a safe place to live, let’s make a deal that benefits both of us and our people!”

At the end of the conversation, they agreed that they will partner up for the time being in order to boost both of their Clans. Gaia couldn’t have asked for a better deal.

This benefitted everyone. More children and babies being born for Shamura’s Army AND a safe place for raising those families and caring for the old and the sick for Gaia.

Even after their deal had expired, they decided to permanently merge their Clans together and have two leaders watch over one big Clan. They called their clan, “The Faithful Ones” under the careful watch of Bishop Shamura and Bishop Gaia.

They puts the feather duster down and sits at the base of the statue. Despite their head injury from Narinder, their memory is still intact. Unfortunately, some memories bring them great pain.

“AGH!!!”

They fall to the ground, in pain. Their whole cranium felt like it was being smacked hard with hammers, repeatedly breaking their skull in and splitting their brain in half. They can feel the cap above their bandaged head being soaked in their blood. The pain was unbearable for them. They curled themselves up in the fetal position and begins to whimper in pain. Even Kallamar’s medicines can only do so much for that scale of pain.

They had to wait it out. They looked up at the statue of Gaia and sobs. The memory that was so painful for them, was the day they sealed her away. They had no choice, they had to trade her life for the life of one of the kids, and since then, their life had known no peace. They’d kill for Gaia to return. They want her to return, they all do.

Unfortunately…they can’t remember how they sealed her…and their memory being attacked by his injury made it nearly impossible to recall the exact memory without collapsing. As they did just now. They collapsed due to the pain, and since no one knows where they were, they’d have to come to his senses themselves.

In the room where Gaia’s statue stood, the statue sheds a single tear. A sign from Gaia? A collection of dew and moisture in the air? Who knows, but it landed on Shamura’s face and for a moment, they were at peace.
