The medersa Ben Youssef is a medersa, Koranic school. A jewel of Saadian architecture, it is located in Marrakech, Morocco. General description: Its plan is inscribed in a square and it has a floor. The walls are made of terracotta bricks, entirely masked by plaster and decorations. The exterior facades have only rare and small skylights and are not decorated. You enter the Ben Youssef Madrasah through a long corridor which opens into a vestibule, which opens at a right angle to the west side of the large courtyard. The rectangular courtyard is paved with marble and has a basin in its center. Its east side, particularly decorated, has a porch opening onto the prayer room. Two galleries occupy the entire length of the south and north sides, opening onto the courtyard under five arches each. Opposite the front door, on the other side of the rectangular basin, opens the prayer hall consisting of three naves delimited by marble pillars supporting arches with facades chiseled with ornamental motifs. Solo traveling through Morocco, or any country for that matter, can have its challenges. One of the most deafening reasons for this is often due to language barriers. English is a universal language that holds a strong baring all over the world, but naturally it is not native to most countries. As someone who speaks multiple languages with various levels of fluency, I won’t lie that it has come in quite handy for me while traveling. For this trip, I found myself heavily depending on my French and Spanish. Oddly enough, it depended on the type of Moroccan individual I encountered. This really blew my mind. You can get by speaking to most Moroccans in French, English, and Arabic. The later can be broken down, as Moroccans can speak both standard Arabic and Moroccan Arabic, otherwise known as Darija. Interestingly though, I countered two subsets of Moroccans with very vast language skills. These were : the Berbers and the Nomads. I cannot even begin to tell you how many languages they likely know, but I can say I was highly impressed watching them code-switch with tourists from various countries. …………………………… But let’s be honest, not everyone has a knack for languages, and that is completely ok! We live in a day and age where phone apps have become game changers in travel! ⚡️ Pro Tips: Here are a few of my favorites: 1. Google Translate 2. Microsoft Translator 3. iTranslate 4. TripLingo What’s great about these is that they also have an offline feature and support both iOS and Android.
