One of the greatest pleasures Hawkins had ever known was the simple act of holding Tim.

Their first night together while they laid panting in the afterglow led Hawk to this discovery. It was not something he indulged in mostly because his usual fucks were just as eager to move on with their time as he was.

But Tim’s breaths had begun to even out, and something about the way the light caught his features drew Hawk in. He mumbled and adjusted them under the covers.

“Is this okay?” Hawk asked nervously.

Tim, with his eyes still closed in bliss, smiled. “After all that, this is where you’re unsure?”

How Tim could look through his defenses after only a few hours of knowing one another, Hawk did not know. “Don’t want to get too comfortable before I leave, Skippy. You look like a cuddler.”

“Pot, meet kettle,” Tim joked. Hawk playfully bit his shoulder in retaliation.

It was as though destiny had crafted them in a way to make them slot perfectly together, extracted from the mold in a matching set. The ease Hawk felt in burying his face in Tim’s neck made the world seem fair, if only for the fact that Skippy existed along with him. How could an unforgiving world create someone so genuinely good?

Hawk was not used to missing people. It came with the territory of being estranged from your own father and an only child. If he felt the looming threat of loneliness creeping up, he knew a place where a pretty face could keep him company throughout the night.

Missing people also required there to be people for Hawk to allow close enough to be a presence in his life. Working in politics did not make for deep connections, so it boiled down to the Smith family (he worked with them everyday) and Marcus (he smoked with him every night).

Hawk, however, did miss Tim. He missed Tim so much it hurt.

Part of Hawk wished he could view the stadium again through those same fresh optimistic eyes, but the reality was, his eyes had never been that fresh. He’d been around major league baseball his whole life, and playing for the Washington Travelers had always felt like a foregone conclusion, never an opportunity. Certainly never something that stopped him in his tracks and caused him to look around. But Tim did stop, because this was something that he had dreamt of but never quite expected to become reality, and Hawk was there to witness it. And as his captain, to help usher Tim into a role, no, a life that would either make him or break him, if he could stick around long enough.

In the shadow of the tunnel, Hawk cupped Tim’s elbow, allowing his hand to linger long enough to say, “Welcome to the big leagues, Tim Laughlin.”

He seems to decide against it with a sigh though, and Louis’ not disappointed when they start walking side by side instead (he’s not).
