A photo I captured of a Bigleaf Maple leaf back in October 2021 along the trail at Silver Falls State Park in Oregon. I had never seen such big maple leaves in my entire life. I recommend doing a Google search and see just how large the leaves can get on this amazing tree.
To celebrate fall's arrival, here's a poem I wrote a few years back about the anticipation of my favorite season.
Patience has filled my spirit as I've waited for your arrival. Through the many seasons of longing and anticipation, I always knew you would return. With your glorious colors, sweet harvest smell, and crisp night air, you have awakened my soul.
Oh autumn, how grateful am I, for your kind and beautiful embrace.
-Jessie
I hope everyone has a blessed fall season.

Acer macrophyllum
aka. bigleaf maple, Oregon maple

Native to western North America, can grow up to 48m and as the name implies, it has very large leaves, up to 30cm. Flowers in early spring, the wood is carved for furniture, the buds are edible and its sap can be used to make maple syrup. The name acer means "maple tree" in Latin, and macrophyllum means "having very large leaves". Has cultivars like 'Mocha Rose', 'Santiam Snows' and 'Seattle Sentinel'
phylum: Angiospermae > class: Eudicots > order: Sapindales > family: Sapindaceae > genus: Acer > species

Hemer Provincial Park and Holden Lake
Yesterday was bright and clear, so it was perfect for a walk in the park. Here are some of the pictures I took of the scenery and one of a huge leaf from the appropriately named Bigleaf Maple tree.

Idea I got from @bookshelfdreams - posting a new photo of the same tree once a month, forgot to post January, and just took the February photo

Not a lot of change lol
I think there might be more birds in the one I took today, but it's hard to tell
This is probably the most dramatic tree in my immediate vicinity, and it is on one of my regular afternoon walk loops.

Things I Love About Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum)

They're aptly named; I've found bigleaf maple leaves that were a foot across.

And they make a fun hat if you're feeling silly!

If a decent-sized bigleaf maple gets damaged and loses its main trunk, it will often grow several new trunks in a circle.

They commonly host epiphytes like mosses and licorice ferns.

Their flowers are an important food source for native pollinators like bumblebees, and their seeds feed native wildlife like squirrels and birds, while deer and other browsing mammals may eat the leaves.
