rock-afire road trip chapter 1 (or part of it!)

 The moon shone over empty stores in Regency Plaza. Most Jacksonvillians were heading to bed, but Showbiz Pizza Place was still buzzing with activity. Within its walls, an organ played a bouncy tune.

Oh Mickey, you're so fine You're so fine, you blow my mind Hey Mickey! Hey Mickey!

A cluster of hands, padded and furry, broke out into applause.

"Thank you, thank you!" Mitzi Mozzarella exclaimed, giving a dramatic bow. "I think that was my best take yet!"

"You really nailed that song, Mitzi." Billy Bob said kindly.

Beach Bear sang,

Oh Mitzi, you're so fine You're so fine, you blow my mind! Hey Mitzi! Hey Mitzi!

The Rock-afire Explosion laughed.

Fatz Geronimo set a colander with bananas and fake human ears on his head. "As the Grand Poohbah of Crazy Colander Night, I'd say this is the finest colander anyone has ever seen!"

"Very stylish, Fatz." Mitzi said.

"You know, Fatz, I think Colander Night is such a great idea," Billy Bob told the gorilla, who smiled proudly. "It gets our guests thinkin' creatively, and it's a whole lotta fun!"

"It gets us thinkin' creatively, too." Dook LaRue added. The brown mongrel was doodling tiny red stars on his rim of his colander, which was also fitted with a striped rocket smashing into puffy cotton balls that resembled smoke.

"And it helps us get back the money we spent on stuff for our colanders." Beach Bear added.

"I think it's beyond stupid to put a spaghetti strainer on your head!" the ever pompous Rolfe DeWolfe said with a tight cross of his arms. "I won't have my fan club seeing me with one of those ridiculous things!"

Earl Schmerle the puppet said something, his voice muffled by his friend's arm. When Rolfe raised him he quipped, "You're beyond stupid, yet the 'fans' see you every day!"

Fatz turned to the others. "Well, what do y'all think we should do?"

"We've already decorated the colanders." Dook pointed out, setting his marker down.

"And I seriously doubt any spaghetti's slipping out of this thing!" Beach Bear added.

His colander was piled high with black and colorful feathers.

"I think water is supposed to come out, not pasta." Mitzi corrected him with a chuckle.

"I love my colander!" Looney Bird said while energetically moving up and down in his blue barrel. "I wanna wear it every single night forever!!"

"I think the event's just in March, Looney Bird." Billy Bob reminded his feathered friend.

"Ohhh! Forever in March, then!"

"It's settled," Fatz declared. "Crazy Colander Night is a-go!"

Rolfe rolled his eyes. "You're all crazy for even thinking about participating! The only good thing about this whole thing is that free vacation."

"I wish I could be the winning family," Dook said. "I'd take a trip to the moon!"

"I'd see my family up in Tennessee," Billy Bob added. "But it's silly when there are so many other fun places to go."

"Naw, I don't think it's silly. If the moon's not available, maybe I'd go see my mama in Louisiana."

"I'd see my mama, too," Fatz (a fellow Louisianan) agreed. "Mmm, I know she'd have the finest feast in the world all done up for me!"

"I'd hang ten in California," Beach Bear said. "The Atlantic's cool and all, but the waves hit different in the Pacific!"

"I'd go to Las Vegas and win lots and lots of money," Rolfe said with a smirk. "I'd go to all the hotels and win even more money!"

Beach Bear scoffed. "Figures."

"Yes, I'd have six figures of cold, hard cash. Buckets full!"

That made Beach Bear laugh. He said, "Yeah… six pennies!"

Rolfe glared at him. "Where would you go, little Earl?"

"Anywhere but here!" Earl replied.

Mitzi gave a dreamy sigh. "I'd take that vacation to see Michael Jackson perform his new songs! Ooh, you think he'd give me the scoop on the rest of his album?"

She broke out into an enthusiastic performance of the King of Pop's latest single, Billie Jean.

"That's marvelous singin', Mitzi, but I think we'd better focus on our next song." Fatz reminded her.

"Oh, right!" Mitzi exclaimed before straightening her sweater and giving her green and white pom poms a shake.

"Here we go with Strain Your Brain. Get ready, everyone!" Fatz told the Rock-afire. "One, two, three!"

Beach Bear played an electrical chord on his guitar and Dook quickly followed with the drums. After a while of them jamming together, Fatz's smooth bass voice joined in.

Nooo brakes, nooo brakes, nooo brakes!

Then everyone sang,

Don't sit back Here comes an attack Get ready, friend Better keep it on your head!

Fatz sang next. Beach Bear and Dook chimed in with some exclamations.

Use your protector Yowza bowza! It's a fallout reflector Yeah, yeah!

As the Rock-afire sang of becoming an atom bomb, Rolfe trudged backstage, the metallic rainbow steamers of his stage fluttering.

"What ridiculous lyrics! We're not literally an explosion!" he muttered. "Or they're not. I, the superior Rolfe de Wolfe, will have no part in this!"

"I have an advertisement on the showtape, stupid!" Earl reminded him. "And if you can't get on the stage, neither can I!"

Rolfe groaned. "How can you even think of being in this cheap propaganda? I thought you knew better than this!"

"I do… but you don't! Besides, it ain't cheap, it's free! The Colander Gazette's gonna have a picture of you in it, you know."

A wave of haughtiness passed through Rolfe. He asked, "…It does? Me? Earl, tell me… did they get my good side?"

"Nah, they got your face!"

How does concept unification go in this au? You mentioned it in your last Animal Crackers post, and I'm just curious. Is it good/bad/neutral? What happens to the RAE (Rolfe, Billy Bob, etc)

concept unification went…awful.

for starters, it only happened because RAE would have to disband without a manager or a place to play at. so chuck, being a charitable guy in LA at the time of their last shows before hiatus, swooped in and offered for them to play at his place in NYC.

so during the summer of 1984, every band member packs up and leaves for New York.

they find quickly though that it’s not what it seems.

they hold a dinner party to discuss business before they leave, and during a smoke break Queenie has a conversation with one of the Warblettes- Irmagard. she warns her of all of Chuck’s manipulative ways, the contracts they can’t get out of, etc.

(not to mention, every member of chuck’s band is either anxious out of their mind, on something or hungover.)

queenie and fatz, on high alert after what Irma told them and also because of what happened with Wolfpack, comb through these contracts. they inform Chuck that they will not be singing them. they say all kinds of shit- like theyre not allowed to date costars, not allowed to talk about the company, and not allowed to quit.

since they didn’t sign his contracts, chuck retaliates. he gives them less and less stage time (since he writes all of the scripts), and is generally a horrible boss. he ignores their complaints and suggestions, and treats everyone like shit- especially mitzi. this leads her to quit the band out of stress towards the end of summer and move back to LA with queenie for her senior year.

after mitzi quits, the band essentially falls apart. fatz quits in retaliation, and slowly one by one everyone else does. they tried to salvage what they had back in LA, but their numbers were dwindling. they announced their final show, an homage to their most popular performances, before everyone went their separate ways.

the last to quit the band for good was earl- his final show, the rolfe and earl show, was just him and his puppet on stage. he goes to tell mitzi a joke on center stage, only to realize no one is left to banter with.

eventually, the band reforms into a sort of more successful version of the “new rock a fire explosion” when mitzi is in college and chuck goes bankrupt, but i really don’t have anything on that yet.

Natasha is a professional spy. She has worn masks all her life. Whether it's for work or her own safety, she does it so easily, as if at the snap of her fingers. La femme fatale or girl next door, pretty fool, penitent sinner. A flick of eyelashes, a raised eyebrow, just a subtle change in body language—and a new mask is on.

Over the years, she'd had to change hundreds of masks. Maybe more. She doesn't count. She looks into the cracked and dirty mirror in just one another trashy hotel in Budapest and doesn't know who she's looking for there.

There have been so many masks over the years that Natasha has forgotten who's the woman behind all of them. Who the real Natasha is. It seems that all those masks have rubbed against her skin forever.

Sometimes it seems to her that there is nothing underneath. The real Natasha is simply does not exist. She's a blank sheet ready to put on any personality you need. A faceless puppet, pulled by the strings by the Dreykov.

And then Natasha meets Barton.

He is absolutely impossible, really. His face is just too sincere and plain for a spy. It terribly shows all emotions so clearly.

Barton makes Natasha laugh a lot; Barton teases Natasha; Barton plays tic-tac-toe with her; Barton watches the Budapest on fire with her.

Barton looks at her and sees something she does not see.

Barton tells her old jokes and Natasha laughs, throwing back her beautiful head, laughs for the first time in years. They're each others shoulder to lie on. The back to feel safe.

Today's compilation:

The Best of 60s Love 1987 Pop / Doo Wop / Soul / R&B / Pop-Rock / Sunshine Pop

Really dig this comp of classic love songs here from Priority Records. Tough to winnow something called The Best of 60s Love down to just 14 songs since most songs with lyrics tend to be about love anyway, but unlike this series' 50s counterpart—which relied heavily on what I would call 'Makeout Point' doo wop—this one is far more eclectic, and its selections span throughout the entirety of the decade too, which is another thing that these Priority oldies comps haven't always done 👍.

So on this release we get a few doo wop tunes, with Lenny Welch's deeply heartfelt 1963 solo rendition of "Since I Fell for You" standing out especially, along with some pop, R&B, soul, and a little bit of pop-rock too. There's classics that get plenty of spin still, like the bubblegum apotheosis that is The Turtles' "Happy Together" and the immortalized slow Philly soul tune of "La-La-Means I Love You" by The Delfonics; plus other big hits that I don't think have maintained the same amount of popularity since, like the 5th Dimension's sweetly beaming cover of Laura Nyro's "Wedding Bell Blues," which conveniently got to see lead singer Marilyn McCoo reprise Bill, a man who Nyro constantly invoked in the original, but who also just so happened to have the same name as the guy that McCoo would end up marrying the same year that the 5th Dimension's own version of the song was released too, Billy Davis, Jr., who is also one of the band's co-founders as well 🎊.

So, I mean, since love has been the dominating topic of songs every decade since humans came up with the concept of song lyrics themselves, Priority really had a lot of material to choose from here when they put this 60s-focused album together. Ultimately, they could've picked 14 completely different songs and the product could've maybe been just as good, if not better, but the thing to really appreciate here is that even though every song is about pretty much the same exact sappy thing, the selection is still varied enough to properly reflect the 60s as a whole, which the label's Best of 50s Love comp didn't end up doing nearly as much of.

So, great tunes, all stages of the decade encompassed, and multiple genres and styles represented too. At the end of the day, you really couldn't ask for anything more from a comp like this.

So I'll make an important digression on my comic and now I'll answer a few questions.

1:yes this is indeed a remake of the first episode but unlike the original there are some differences, for example the addition of new characters namely Kris Dremurr and Susie and many others.

2:Why are Susie and Asriel people I will answer: because I made all the characters from deltarune people so that there would be more riddles and secrets in the comic, but don't worry in the dark world all the characters from deltarune will become monsters this is an idea I took from the original source that Toby Focus was interested in the idea of making everyone people in the light world and monsters in the dark

3:Will there be Marvel and DC in the crossover: No, sorry, but if I add it, it will be some kind of a mess and I will have to make other stories. I understand the Marvel and DC multiverse, so for the mystery kids multiverse, they will be fictional, like a movie, series, cartoon, game, and comic.

4:the second episode will also be like the original: No about the second one will be dedicated to Gideon Gleeful from the unreleased episode Mystery Kids: Mirror of Nightmare well there too it will be a little different as well as the third episode about the beldam but the following episodes will be referred to different films series games and books most often horror for example The Ring, Cujo, Friday the 13th, The Bay, others and yes these episodes will be inspired by the Russian YouTuber on the Lynch channel and three series The X-Files Charmed and Supernatural.

This idea/question popped into my head last night and I think it might intrigued you too. Or at least it'll be fun to think about.

So we know that in the Slasher AU, Rena is dead and Ryan and Kingston are still running their L.V mafia. But what if they were a bunch of slashers? Whether they replace the weasels as the Slasher Villains or they are Las Vegas' group of killers? How much different do you think they and their relationships would be (not just with each other but other people, like Maya and Kingstons parents)? What kind of irl slashers would you compare them to?

If they are slashers alongside the weasels... Ohhh boy Shiny, Poppy, and Lottie are in for a shit show when they get on the road, I imagine.

SLASHER AU SLASHER AU SLASHER AU-

Okay so I saw this and had to get up, fill a hot water bottle and get comfy so I could respond. I'm ready now, here we go.

Slasher!Rena is Freddy down to a T. She's an orphan, she's a Huge Tease, she's terrifyingly cunning, and she'd absolutely come back for her daughter just to use her when she needs her. So Rena's basically herself, but with a taste for bloodshed. As opposed to King and Ryan, Rena probably always had a little bloodlust in her, from childhood; I can see her being bullied when she was little (she was a lanky, awkward thing who looked just like her brother- they called her a boy, boyish, masculine. Said she would never be pretty; that kinda thing. As well as 'poor' and 'orphan'. She and Ry still get adopted by King's parents in this au but that doesn't change the fact they aren't her real mum and dad, and children are cruel) and hating everyone around her (Except Ryan and King). She started hating guys, particularly, even more after she hit puberty and SUDDENLY!! everyone liked her.

As she grew up she became more and more the character we know- addicted to drama. Except its even worse, because... well, she's not satisfied with a little sex. Yes, thats great, but she starts to think that if she can kill... and then go to the funeral, too,... t h a t would be perfect. And of course, she targets kids she grew up with and their families. (And at this point, she's the most popular woman in the little australian farm town. She knows everyone, she's friends with everyone- So she has access, to everyone.)

After they move to Vegas, america's capital of bad mistakes, Rena really hits her perfect stride. Everyone there is her puppet.

(And *cough* I have this thought where, after Poppy/Shiny/and Lottie come to Vegas and meet the Roo's, and Lottie naively thinks she's finally found a parent who wants her (Rena's spinning it like Smartass took her and hid her from her mother- which we both know is nothing but lies), Rena digs into her daughter. She finds out everything that happened, convincing Lottie with gentle motherly touches and warm openness to tell her all her secrets. Then, for fun, Rena sells Lottie out to Greasy)

Slasher!Kingston is Chucky for sure XD Oh! And also Foxy and Stu!! Kingston still seems to think pretty clearly (Unlike, say, Otis or Baby. Or Tiffany. Or Billy.), he k n o w s the difference between right and wrong, he can explain ethics, but he just doesn't care ('wrong's the fun one'). Kingston basically started developing a bloodlust after Rena started killing. He was always pretty popular in school (AFL star) and in town; he was never bullied, but he's always up for trying something new! King's a bit of a thrill seeker (He drove before he had a licence way over the speed limit, he drank before it was legal, he smoked, he did drugs, he was up for really any dangerous stunt, etc), so when he stumbles upon his girlfriend with blood on her pretty face and his old football coach laying still on the ground, he's basically like... 'oh is this what we're doing now?? Well- shit- I'm down! Whadawe do with this??' *gesturing to the body of the man who kindly taught him football all through highschool* Who's next??'

And its not personal for him at all like it is with Rena, he'll kill anyone. Doesn't matter. He has very little in the way of empathy.

King just jumps on board immediately- following Rena's lead but quickly ~flourishing~ on his own. And, being a thrill seeker, he almost blows their cover so so many times! Rena gets so annoyed 😅 She has tied him to a chair with military grade knots through the night before on multiple occasions because they need to lay low now goddamnit!

As for his parents... he would absolutely kill them, no guilt no shame. He doesn't want to, he's not gonna go out of his way to do it (They're his mum and dad! He loves them, in his way), but if they found out about his extracurriculars and they started creating problems then he will shoot them in the heads.

Slasher!Ryan, true to his character, was never a really cruel person (Just complicit)... until Maya** was killed. So, I'd liken him to... maybe... Needy? From Jennifer's Body? After Jennifer and Chip were killed, she lost a l l semblance of being the 'good guy'. She went basically monotone, and just... pissed. And thats definitely Ryan (In the original universe too, but its definitely more violent in this one). Ryan definitely also has a mindless, wrathful Michael Myers thing about him.

He wants to destroy whoever did it, whoever took Maya away. But once its done... he still doesn't feel better. Ryan will never feel better. He's lost something very important inside him, he doesn't care anymore, and it will not ever go back to the way it was. He's like a mindless soldier for King and Rena to use as they will. (To their credit- they do try not to treat him that way though. Thats their brother, who's been with them no matter what since the start, and... they love him. He's their soft spot!! But sometimes they have to use him.)

Ryan goes into dissociative states where he will hurt anyone near him, and King has to hold him back (Which is a struggle- Ryan's stronger then any of them) while Rena forces a pill down his throat; covering his mouth until it goes down and he goes to sleep.

** Maya did not know about Kings and Rena's killings when she was alive. Ryan kept it from her, and though King made some odd jokes sometimes around her, and she might have had some suspicions... she never outright found out.
