RETURN.
Hosea 6:1.
"Come, and let us return to the LORD; for He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up."
God’s readiness to restore is predicated by our return. We move, He moves.
This week, what does your return entail for His healing to happen?
Pastor Robin.

Honestly the negativity toward A Sea Change has been absolutely insane, especially considering how well it concluded Matthew's storyline???? Like yeah it was short and a longer story would have been awesome but babes its length was announced MONTHS ago yall had plenty of time to adjust expectations accordingly. It was a cute little snippet into Matthew's future and Cassie did a good job.
I'm going to post a little review later to add some nice stuff to the pot, because I think Cassie handled Matthew's story brilliantly from Nothing But Shadows through A Sea Change. I want to add some nice stuff to the pot. But TSC fandom be normal for once challenge
(This isn't at any one person it is because of posts from like 5 people)

Decided my next read will be Dolphin Diaries! I loved this series as a kid, but barely ever see the books anymore. After 2 dense, cinderblock-sized epic fantasy novels I'm excited to read something short and fun.

one of the things i for real lose the most sleep over is the worry that one day there will be no more china miéville books for me to read. i have this with andrew rowe too but thats far more theoretical cause my man cranks out banger after banger right after the other without stopping and even if he DID stop all the adjacent books count as andrew rowe books to me, so

My reviews of the Careful of Books novellas
The spoiler-free gist is that I really enjoyed all four novellas and definitely recommend reading them if you can. I left the majority of my thoughts below the cut in case you want to avoid spoilers, though I avoided using many specific plot details.
A Sea Change: Oh Matthew Fairchild you are so special to me. I loved getting to see him again, especially dipping into his POV. He's just as delightful as ever, and it was great getting to see a version of Matthew who's past the worst of his addiction and depression but still hasn't figured out what will come next. I also really enjoyed how his grief over Christopher was handled. Kit is one of my all-time top TSC characters so I was definitely disappointed that ChoT didn't have more mourning for him, but I 100% get that it wouldn't have fit the flow of the narrative and also these characters were dealing with a lot of crazy plot stuff so it would have taken a bit for the loss to fully sink in and the grieving process to begin in earnest. Showing Matthew affected by it in the long run felt very appropriate. Plus, every mention of fire messages was like a little memorial to him. I also loved getting little glimpses of other TLH characters in Matthew's thoughts, since he may be alone on the ocean but he'll always carry his friends with him. Plus, Oscar was there! Get me a t-shirt that says I <3 Oscar Wilde, Hero Dog. I think the plot was a lot of fun too. I was glad to see Matthew put his deductive reasoning to use, and I really like that the immediately suspicious downworlders weren't actually to blame for everything. It's always nice when TSC commits to showing that downworlders are people just like Shadowhunters or mundanes. Sidenote, but I can't help but wonder if the offer to turn Matthew into a vampire was a reference to the old fan theories that he'd become a downworlder by the end of TLH. I liked Sylvain and his relationship with Matthew well enough, but he's not a new favorite or anything. It felt a little jarring how quickly they got together, since CC usually goes for more slowburn ships, but it still fit the flow of the story. Ultimately I just wish that we got more time with them, but considering that the whole story was under 80 pages I'd definitely call it a success. I think I'll always be a little disappointed that we didn't get the full Matthew bindup (like I'll always be disappointed that we didn't get The Secret Treasons), but I trust CC's judgement and if she didn't have a full bindup worth of stories to tell then I'm glad we at least got one excellent novella.
A Scandal at Undershaw: This one was a lot of fun! Probably my favorite of the non-Matthew novellas, just on account of the vibes. It managed to keep a certain level of gravitas attached to the characters without taking itself too seriously, and the absurdity of "modern high schooler Sherlock Holmes who still acts Like That" was played into without feeling mocking. I like that the story acknowledges how Sherlock's behaviors (getting so wrapped up in his mysteries that he doesn't consider other people's boundaries) can be harmful, but it never demonizes Sherlock or acts like he's an emotionless asshole. I also like this version of John and think that he has a lot of personality while still falling into the traditional Watson role of following Holmes's zanniness. Irene was fun, and I like that she and Sherlock completely match each other's energies. I was just kind of along for the ride with the mystery, and I think it was totally serviceable. All the pieces fit together and it helped move the plot forward, but it wasn't really what I was there for. I will say, it's a little funny to me that CC published her high school AU Johnlock fic and they don't even get together. That plays into something I felt overall with this story; that it's just part one of many (though I have no idea if CC has plans to continue it). Even though the mystery is revolved by the end, all the characters clearly have a lot more to do in their personal stories. Now that they're a bit settled (and unsettled) at Undershaw, I'd love to see what they get up to next and how their arcs continue to evolve! I'd totally read more novellas (or even full novels) about this version of the Sherlock Holmes universe.
Wendy Darling: While the last story felt like part one in an anthology, this one felt like episode one of a TV show (which, to be fair, is kinda what it is). The script format was interesting, and I didn't have any issues with it though I admittedly prefer CC's prose. I like the setup of "dark academia Peter Pan" as she calls it in the introduction, and the lore of this universe is certainly intriguing. My one issue is that I don't really feel as though anything is resolved by the end. I want to read the rest of this book or watch the rest of this show, but as far as I know that isn't going to happen. Wendy, Peter, and James are all fun and engaging characters who I'd be down to spend more time with, but I don't feel especially connected to any of them. I'm mostly here for the plot and lore, which, as I've said, doesn't feel complete. It's all setup with only a couple bits of payoff. Still worth the read, but more of a vibes experience than anything else.
In Fire Foretold: This one was an interesting read because I know that CC is planning on developing it into a full series. I think the concept of a reverse portal story is a lot of fun right off the bat, though I admittedly wasn't grabbed by the worldbuilding of the fantasy portion (which might be down to my personal preferences). Once the story jumped forward in time to the real world, I quite liked Alix as a character and enjoyed the ominous impositions of fantasy on her (often grim) reality, though this is another story where the plot took precedence over the characters for me. I'm still intrigued by the cast so far though, and I'm especially glad to see a prominent F/F friendship, since CC has never been great at those. I hope that Julia will get to play a more major role in the full series (like Simon in TMI), though Bram and Corwin seem cool too. In the end it's another story where I'm left wanting more, only in this case I know that I'll get it.
So there you have it! Careful of Books is definitely my favorite Seasons of Shadowhunters book so far, and it leaves me excited to see what will come in Better in Black. Now I'm gonna go reread Nothing But Shadows, because A Sea Change has me missing the merry thieves.

Hi! I do bookbinding as a hobby and have been wanting to bindup a Steddie fic called Hush Little Baby (Beast Under Your Bed) by Steviejeebies. I really love your closeup of Steve and Eddie's eyes and think it would be cool to work into the cover and/or chapter headers for the story. While I only do bindups for my own personal use, I do post pictures on instagram for my hobby, so I like to ask permission. I absolutely understand artists not wanting their artwork to be associated with fanfic. Also, unfortunately, I only have a black and white printer, so their inclusion would not be true to their original form. Please let me know your thoughts. I would like to respect your wishes.
this is such an old ask I'm so sorry yes of course you can use it for personal use! i appreciate you asking.

13 Books
I was tagged by @leatherjacketmixtapes! Thank you for the tag. Let's talk about some books.
1.) The Last Book I Read
The Score by Elle Kennedy. Book #3 in the Off-Campus series.
2.) A Book I Recommend
I've really been wanting to recommend The One by John Marrs lately. It was a book that had me gasping aloud while reading. Quickly followed by, "Oh, he's not going to do that..." "Oh my god he did that!" So many weird and fun turns. It's a weird book that was so so good. (I have more recommendations as well. That's just the one I've found myself wanting to recommend more lately.)
3.) A Book That I Couldn't Put Down
Recently, this book was Everyone on This Train is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson. I read it in like 36 hours. And that included two full work days.
4.) A Book I've Read Twice (Or More)
I love a good reread so there are a ton that would fit this one. I had fun rereading and annotating for the first time Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. But that same month I also reread a book I remember reading and loving in 5th grade. It doesn't stand up to a 24 years later reread, of course, but it was still fun. I have plans to reread The Hunger Games trilogy this year.
5.) A Book on my TBR
I have 7 physical books, 9 Kindle books, and 8 NetGalley arcs on my TBR at the moment. So let's pick one of each? I'm excited for Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I can't wait to read the novelization of Pacific Rim which is currently sitting on my Kindle. The NetGalley ARC I'm the most pumped to read is probably Icon and Inferno by Marie Lu (the second book in the Stars and Smoke series).
6.) A Book I've Put Down
This Woven Kingdom by Tahereh Mafi. After managing to get through the original Shatter Me series, I should have known better than to pick up a book by this author.
7.) A Book on my Wish List
The new pretty edition of The Lies of Locke Lamora that comes out in August. Have you seen it? It's BEAUTIFUL. I also have a handful of comics/comic bindups that I would love not to have to pay for myself.
8.) A Favorite Book From Childhood
I was really into The Westing Game in 5th grade. I had another favorite series for the rest of my childhood. And then I found Twilight in high school and loved that series.
9.) A Book You Would Give to a Friend
The Last Watch by J.S. Dewes. I'm thinking of a specific friend for this one. It's a good Sci-Fi. For other friends, maybe Assistant to the Villain and/or The Foxglove King for the purely selfish reason that I want someone to talk to about these books.
10.) A Book of Poetry or Lyrics You Own
I have a bind up of all of William Shakespeare's sonnets.
11.) A Nonfiction Book You Own
I don't tend to read Nonfiction, but my well intending mother-in-law gave me a copy of Worthy: How to Believe You are Enough and Transform Your Life by Jamie Kern Lima.
12.) What Are You Currently Reading
Just Do This One Thing for Me by Laura Zimmermann. (A YA Mystery/Thriller).
13.) What Are You Planning on Reading Next
The Hemlock Queen by Hannah Whitten.

Shoutout to Cassandra Clare for writing a spinoff about Matthew Fairchild in the future. Literally my favourite thing ever to happen. She doesn't walk all over his peace of mind. She lets him bejeweled. He makes the whole place ✨️shimmer.✨️

I... don't know if "We're giving SJM way too much credit" is fair too say.
Let me start this with saying, this is not in any way at all, to come across as an attack, or anything negative at all. I am saying this, not because I think you will take it that way, but because I know if I got this response, my anxiety would flare up, and would make me think this way myself. So not knowing, I want to make sure I make it clear, this is NOT an attack. This is NOT meant with ANY negative feelings AT ALL!
For example, I'm currently re-reading The Assassin's Blade and...
MAJOR THRONE OF GLASS SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT
So, the first Throne of Glass book was released on August 2nd, 2012. The ONLY novella to be released AFTER, is The Assassin and The Healer.
The Assassin and The Pirate Lord, novella No.1 released January 13th, 2012, and we have the following passage.
She walked until a surprisingly cold breeze swept past her. She halted.
Slowly, Celaena turned north, toward the source of the breeze which smelled of a faraway land she hadn't seen in eight years. Pine and snow*-a city still in winter's grasp. She breathed it in, staring across the leagues of lonely, black ocean, seeing, somehow, that distant city that had once, long ago, been her home. The wind ripped the strands of hair from her braid lashing them across her face. Orynth. A city of light and music, watched over by an alabaster castle with an oral tower so bright it could be viewed for miles.
The moonlight vanished behind a thick cloud. In the sudden dark stars glowed brighter.
She knew all the constellations by heart, and she instinctively sought out the Stag, Lord of the North, and the immovable star that crowned his head.
Back then, she hadn't had any choice. When Arobynn offered her this path, it was either that, or death. But now ...
She took a shuddering breath. No, she was as limited in her choiced as she'd been when she was eight years old. She was Adarlan's Assassin, Arobynn Habel's protégée and heir-and she would always be.
It was a long walk back to the tavern.
The Assassin's Blade, Page 44. The Assassin and the Pirate Lord, Chapter 5
This is clearly foreshadowing how Celaena is Aelin. But before this, there is no mention of Aelin. No mention of a lost Queen. No mention of Terressen. But anyone who reads this after Crown of Midnight, knows what this scene is foreshadowing.
But there are those who didn't read it before Crown of Midnight, because this novella was published before Throne of Glass was published. Meaning, SJM was foreshadowing not only Celaena being Aelin, but the scents of Pine and Snow since BEFORE Throne of Glass was even released into the world.
* We know she thought of scents when describing ships, because Terresen, Aelins home, smells of Pine and Snow. Rowan, Aelins mate, ALSO smells of Pine and snow. I know for a fact that Aelin mentions smelling Pine and snow, this time here, as well as other times before she meets Rowan, before the Rowaelin ship was born. Then it turns out he was always her mate.
Then we move on to the second short story. in the bind up, but the last novella to be published, The Assassin and the Healer. Published in the bindup, on March 4th, 2014.
This short story(along with the whole bind up book) was released between Crown of Midnight, and Heir of Fire, with the intention of introducing Yrene Towers. There is also a lot of Foreshadowing in this short story as well.
You have tidbits like Yrene likening Celaena to wildfire, only to later remark(on page 102 of TAB) "This girl wasn't like wildfire-she was wildfire." Foreshadowing Aelins powerful fire powers.
But then you continue on and you have Celaena and Yrene talking about if Yrene went to the Torre Cesme, what would she do after her healers training is finished, and Yrene mentions how she would come back to Erelia, and become a healer, as "There are a ... a lot of people who need good healers."(TAB page 103)
But the best piece of Foreshadowing SJM inserts into The Assassin and the Healer would be when she straight up tells us how Kingdom of Ash ends. Four(or is it five?) YEARS before the massive yellow book even was published!
The young woman turned her back to the door, but stopped again. "Whether you stay, or go to Antica and attend the Torre Cesme and return to save the world," she mused, "you should probably learn a thing or two about defending yourself."
The Assassin's Blade, Page 104. The Assassin and the Healer, Chapter 4.
Sarah, in the form of Foreshadowing, just laid bare the ending of the series, by telling us Yrene would save the world, because it is Yrene who killed Erewan. Yrene who defeated the main villain of the series(Aelin defeated Maeve, badass she is, but Maeve became a villain like halfway through, where Erewan always was).
I've also been counting, and while I'm only on Chapter four of The Assassin and the Desert, I've been counting how many times Sarah has foreshadowed Sam's death in this book.
And so far, in one hundred and fifty-three pages Sam's death has been foreshadowed nine times. Four by Sam himself, and five by Celaena.
I've only JUST started my SJM Re-Reading Journey, before HOFAS comes out, but I've already seen so much foreshadowing. So to say SJM foreshadowing a ship through scents is giving her too much credit, isn't entirely fair. Especially when she's done so already, with Rowaelin.
any thoughts on why elain smells like jasmine, a flower that flourishes at night? i really want elucien but i think this could prove otherwise😭
or did you already do anything on this? sorry i didn't check
Hi there!! 😊👋
Jasmine blooming in the Night Court is mentioned on page 45 of ACOMAF
I smelled jasmine first—
But....
The first introduction we actually have of Jasmine is in ACOTAR, page 209:
There was no tangy metallic stench—no, the smell of magic had become like jasmine, like lilac, like roses.
It's the scene where Tamlin allows Feyre to experience their world through fae senses and the first thing she notes is that smell of Springs magic is like jasmine, lilac, and roses.
Some try to connect Elain to the NC because of Jasmine but that is choosing to forget all that we know of Elain's scent.
Her sister’s delicate scent of jasmine and honey lingered in the red-stoned hall like a promise of spring, a sparkling river that she followed to the open doors of the chamber. Elain stood at the wall of windows, clad in a lilac gown
The first note is jasmine which could go Night Court or Spring but the second note is honey (definitely a spring thing) and SJM follows that up with "promise of spring".
It's extremely obvious that SJM is connecting Elain's scent to the scent of the magic of spring, she literally adds the season that is associated with that court into the phrase
If she wanted us to tie it into the jasmine of the Night Court she would have said something like jasmine and moonflowers or her scent a promise of darkness.
Not only are both jasmine and honey associated with Spring but she then included that Elain was wearing a lilac gown (yet another "scent" of Springs magic) and we know Elain is often associated with roses (that wooden carving in SF, "rose bloom in a mud field",etc) the third scent of springs magic.
I like going one step further and saying this not only hints at Elain in Spring but as it's High Lady (considering SJM gave her the scent of that courts magic) but I know some are divided on that too.
