One TikTok tutorial posted by a University of Texas at Austin student, who playfully called borgs “a heart attack in a jug," student, and whose username is bellaaalonzo, demonstrated how she makes her own borg from water, two-thirds of a 750-ml bottle of Tito’s vodka, a generous squirt of red Mio water enhancer, a Celsius energy drink, and a liquid IV writing video that has been viewed 1.6 million times.
Binge drinking, or the act of consuming a large quantity of alcohol in a short time frame, has been a popular pastime on university campuses for decades and doesn’t seem to be disappearing anytime soon, but borgs have been heralded by students as a welcome improvement to the mysteriously boozy, punch-filled bathtubs or monstrous kegs seen at college parties in the past.
Erin Monroe, a New York-based harm reduction specialist, praised borgs for decreasing the risks associated with binge drinking.
She said she “loved” borgs because any amateur mixologist creating the beverage has “complete control” over exactly how much liquor to include.
She added that the presence of a lid on the gallon container may significantly decrease the risk of having your drink spiked, which, again, is a problem frequently occurring on university campuses.
In another TikTok video, one self-identified millennial praised Gen Z and their borgs for innovating college drinking practices and recounted drinking jungle juice from dirty bathtubs at frat houses in college, where any concerns about cleanliness or sanitation could be discounted with the mantra "alcohol kills germs."
A major part of making a borg is giving the gallon container a ceremonial clever pun seen on social media, include: "I like big borgs and I cannot lie," "Borg-ingham Palace," "Borg Lite," and "I studied a-borg."
Borgs first appeared on social media in 2020 and gradually gained popularity; the #Borg has 65 million TikTok views.
While the harm reduction strategies surrounding borgs have been praised online, binge drinking remains dangerous. Five or more drinks for a male and four or more drinks for a female is considered binge drinking. Thirty-two percent of Canadians between 20 and 34 years old claim they binge drink 12 times or more in a year.
For now, borgs seem to be relatively contained on American campuses, but the booze-filled gallon jugs are likely to slosh over the U.S.-Canadian border soon enough.

In modern online culture, the merge of social media, and consumerism are clearly intertwined. I notice in my day to day life the way strategy is used in a business’s favor, such as leaving upcharged snack sized foods at the front of grocery stores, to YouTube recommendations contributing to binge watching culture on the web. The problem that I have been researching is the effects on consumerism algorithms have. It is important not only to me but in general because it affects the general economy, such as the growth of billion dollar companies like amazon, and the effects of surrounding areas of high income like the outskirts of silicon valley, and can have psychological effects on the consumer, such as feeling like one needs to “keep up” on the latest trends, and so on and so forth. Or simply just blindly consuming a product whether it is physical or not.
An interesting observation I have made on my research, is that there is a plentitude of resources to find out HOW the consumer algorithm works to increase sales in YOUR favor, but very little in comparison to how to not be controlled as easily by said algorithms.

In this TedTalk, Dr. Tim Kessler discusses my point, algorithms are manipulative and have the power to make decisions for you without even noticing. “After understanding how they work, I felt so, so manipulated. How could it be that I was living my life without knowing how I was being manipulated” (Kessler).
The entire talk discusses how algorithm theory is much more than that, it contributes to cultures and habits, such as enabling bad eating habits like Kessler had experienced himself after binge eating pasta after googling pasta recipes and following all of the recommendations for an extended period of time and becoming ill, or being recommended a concerning amount of pornagraphy during his visit to Bavaria in an area where pornagraphy is prevalent between men and assumed he was as well, these algorithms are an imperfect system. But as imperfect, it stays people into things they may not have engaged in otherwise, and the concerning part is that is the point in a way. Like he points out, if you don’t follow the algorithm's predictions, they get “weird” with their selection of “drawers” or categories the system puts you in.
Like the text We Are Data suggests, “Regardless of the state/capital distinction, the endless production of data about our lives means that there will always be some piece of us to be pooled, stored, sorted, indexed, and exploited” (We Are Data).

Harvard Journal of Law & Technology share similar feelings to consumerism and the consequences of algorithms. The question is less so of whether or not algorithms are good or bad, that is up to personal interpretation, but the importance of understanding how to think individually in a technological world that has already transitioned into machine thinking.
“The next generation of e-commerce, researchers say, will be conducted by digital agents based on algorithms that can handle entire transactions: using data to predict consumers’ preferences, choosing the products or services to purchase, negotiating and executing the transaction, and even automatically forming coalitions of buyers to secure optimal terms and conditions.1 Human decision-making could be completely bypassed. Such algorithms might be written by consumers for their own use or supplied by external firms.2 We call these digital assistants “algorithmic consumers.” This is not a huge technological leap. The future is already here. In some industries, such as stock trading, algorithms already automatically translate their results into buying decisions” (Gal Koren 2017).
Not only with online advertisements, but they exist all around. On social media with cookies aiding targeted ads with coupon codes for incentive, coupons in the store next to an item incenting you to buy, the rise of Alexa capturing words to recommend tasks and products, the list goes on.
The other day, I went to the grocery store with my mom, just for whipped cream and socks. We saw a pack of Haribro Gummy Bears for a dollar at self-checkout, we caved. The difference is we know why the bears were there beforehand, and knew we were in a financial spot to afford the upcharge for such a small bag to kick the craving. And the goal is to have the majority of consumers know why their gummy bears are on that shelf, and think for themselves if they should take it or not.
The reading covers this, but for a reason, it is inevitable to become involved with an algorithm trying to sway your thoughts and choices, but further search is necessary to become less vulnerable and be more aware of your choices and find the balance between helpful algorithm decision making, and draining your wallet and mental health.
Steven Courtney of Convertize does just that, explaining why companies put out the gummy bears, and how the consumer decides to grab them, understanding the business side is a good way to do this.
He defines the study on consumer behavior as,
“The study of the people and the activities associated with a purchase. It explores how products are chosen, distributed and used, as well as the emotions, psychology and behaviour they create” (Courtney 2020).
Below are simple charts that visually represent potential thought processes of consumerism, and how to categorize one’s purchases.
Heuristics are another term to aid the understanding of consumer decisions and gain control of what to invest in and want to give your time and energy to. Is this an impulse purchase, or a need.
In conclusion, to start to maintain a sense of self in a world that heavily relies on machine operated decision making, it is important to understand the mechanics, end goal, and potential effects. That is what the difference is between a convenient tool, and a trap. Understand Consumer Behavior, how something can be too good to be true, and remain grounded in your values and needs so when a system is trying to sway you, you can make the conscious decisions for yourself as well, not because you were told to.

Replay: Live with Search Engine Land season wrap-up—COVID and marketing disruption

Since March, Live with Search Engine Land has provided marketers with an informal way to step outside their organizations and get a feel for the pulse of their industry as it navigates COVID, social justice movements, data regulation and algorithm updates.
Some of the insights shared by our dozens of panelists helped to explain trends or disseminate practical advice, both of which will be crucial to marketers as we move past these first six months of marketing agency disruption. While we all would like to maintain high hopes moving forward, the lessons we’ve learned during this period can help us prepare and build a foundation for success as the world continues to grapple with these extraordinary circumstances.
To recap the insights our panelists have shared, Search Engine Land’s Editor-in-chief, Ginny Marvin, hosted a special season wrap-up of Live with Search Engine Land, featuring fellow Search Engine Land editors Barry Schwartz, Greg Sterling and myself, George Nguyen.
COVID quick stats
Marvin set the tone of the session by laying down a timeline of events to illustrate the stranglehold effect that the coronavirus placed on economic activity.
On the opposite end, CPG and some other sectors saw growth as people turned to e-commerce: Target said they had 5 million new online shoppers; about 40% of those shoppers picked up products in-store. And, Shopify saw a 47% revenue increase YoY for Q1 2020.
Looking into the future, US e-commerce sales are expected to increase by 18% this year, according to eMarketer. That would put e-commerce at 14.5% of total retail sales; removing fuel and auto purchases puts that figure closer to 20%. However, this growth will not offset the loss of physical retail sales, which is expected to drop by 10.5%.

Takeaways from marketing experts during COVID
Prioritize your marketing agency momentum. Brands that can continue to run ads and other marketing agency campaigns should do so — that was the consensus during our digital commerce session of Live with Search Engine Land.
“What we found is that brands that go dark during recession, depression or even crisis-type periods have a very difficult time climbing back up the mountain once things begin to normalize,” Tony Verre, VP of e-commerce at Integer Group, said. Businesses that refine their marketing agency strategies when resources are tight, instead of stopping them altogether, are more likely to succeed during and after a recession, studies have shown.
Rethink your supply and fulfillment chain. Brands may opt to cut back on their marketing agency to save desperately needed resources, but they may also have no other choice: The pandemic’s disruption extended to supply chains, and businesses that may have been able to continue advertising may not have had inventory to sell, forcing them to halt their ads.
As an example, Marvin shared an anecdote about an Amazon seller she had spoken to: The seller stocked up on inventory in case her manufacturer were to abruptly shut down. Shortly thereafter, Amazon stopped taking non-essential items, “Suddenly, she had nowhere to ship it,” Marvin said.
Instead of resigning to her predicament and pausing her business, she was able to locate a warehouse that made auto parts, but do their own fulfillment through Amazon. She then made a deal with them to distribute her orders.
“You saw businesses being flexible in ways that, if you’d asked them two months ago if they could have pivoted their business model and fulfillment chain in two weeks [might have seemed impossible],” Marvin said.
Maintain your brand marketing agency efforts. Some organizations diverted more resources to their performance marketing agency campaigns, leaving their brand marketing agency efforts with the scraps.
“Suddenly during this time, we had everybody more or less saying the same things about the coronavirus,” said Sterling, pointing out the generic messaging that audiences quickly grew weary of. “It speaks to what differentiates marketers in a period like this … ultimately, I think brand is the differentiator in the end.”
Like a deer staring down a set of headlights, unexpected circumstances can paralyze unprepared brands. Build out processes that enable your organization to publish messaging that’s timely and aligned with what your audience expects to distinguish your brand from the competition.

What the SERP can look like. As COVID cases proliferated throughout the US, people turned to search engines for the latest news and data — some of it, potentially lifesaving.
In response, Bing created a COVID tracker, revamped its search results page and added a CDC self-checker chatbot to help users determine whether they should seek medical help.
Google overhauled its coronavirus-related search results pages, adding a navigation tab that enables searchers to filter their results for more specific information, sections for common questions, local and national resources, and at-a-glance statistics for the nation and the geographic region of the user.
While the search results pages for coronavirus-related queries were created under special circumstances and are atypical of the results we commonly see, it provides us a glimpse of the direction that search engines could be headed towards as they implement features that resolve more of users’ searches without them having to actually click through on a listing.
