What's the difference between humans and animals, I can practically hear you asking? Why are our feelings so different from theirs?

Now before some animals-have-no-rights blapper ends up on this post: Yeah! Animals have feelings too! And they are owed care and respect commensurate with their experience. That's why we have sapience categorizations to begin with.

But no, you weren't asking about that. You were asking about killing and eating animals.

First of all, how do you know I'm not a vegetarian? (I mean. Before I was a raccoon.) Who are you to judge my habits? And even if I do eat meat, so do most animals, to the point where if you remove some carnivores from the ecosystem, you get huge problems with the entire biome! And guess what! Humans are an apex predator! Don't get me wrong, I'm not pro recreational hunting, but a lot of killing animals is part of active land management. Even if you oppose eating meat, do you oppose that?

So, there's a whole scale of when killing is bad, ranging from killing a healthy and beloved animal for no reason (bad) to managing invasives (good), such that you can't really tell without context whether a particular instance of killing is morally okay.

Well, pet ownership is the same way. Humans aren't the only animals you shouldn't keep as a pet! Lots of wild animals adapt extremely poorly to being a pet. Bears make bad pets. Bats make bad pets. Most "exotic" species aren't exotic because they're rare, they're exotic because they aren't domesticated. You could make the argument that humans are "domestic" - after all, we're bred to live with other humans! - but that doesn't mean we're pets. Humans are a poor pet species because of their social needs, the importance of autonomy, and the fact that their territory is supposed to be really big.

It's also a sophont right violation to keep them as a pet, but hey, maybe you'd be better at understanding interdimensional law if you could plupping read.
