A level shifter just for pixels 🔌✨💡

After noodling with some WS2811s and TM1814, we really wish we had a board that would level-shift our NeoPixel signals from 3V to 5V or give us an inverted data line. So, we designed this board. It uses an AP3602

charge pump to give a clean 5V reference voltage from 3~5V. A 74HCT2G34

shifts two signals - we call them DAT and CLK, but it could be anything really - to 5V from 1.8~5V. Finally there's an 74LVC1G04

inverted data output line for TM1814 and other weird chips. Terminal blocks on either side make this a no-solder board. There's also a single disableable 1.5mm NeoPixel on the DAT line for testing the WS281x signal coming through OK. Coming soon.

Two BQ25185 boards were designed: a LiPo charger and a 3.3V buck output variant. The corrected HSTX to DVI converter boards were tested and ordered. Revisited the LPS28 breakout project and found a dual-UART USB chip (CP2105). Locating an ultra-thin RG-174 coax cable.

While at GenCon I made specific note of the ergonomic design at Portal Dragon Games, namely Planetoid.

Double-layer boards are old hat by now, and many games feature them. The recessed slots securely hold tokens or cards, preventing them from getting lost or confused during gameplay, and just kinda feel good to slot things into, in some primordial way.

Here however, the slots have been taken to the next level. On the playerboard, the slots are smaller than the tokens that go into them - the result being that the tokens stand up at an angle, making them easy to grab. And on the planetoid itsself, the lower board also has holes punched in it, so that the tokens are sitting on a narrow bridge of cardboard - press on one side, and the other comes up, making it easy to grab.

Really simple changes, but the result is quite effective, allowing for better ease of use for the undextrous without increasing the layout in any way whatsoever. I’ll be looking forward to see if any other nifty design nuggets come from Portal Dragon in the future.

This is one of my favorite skateboards. I painted this for a friend who plays the trombone in exchange for a photo shoot I needed at the time and every time I come across this board in the archives I love it more and more. I've never held a trombone in my life, but this piece (to me) has that gritty, basement jazz lounge vibe. It's also an interesting shift I went through during a couple of year period from about 2012-2016, where I was actively fighting against rigid detail.
