the bookstore was technically closed.

the sign on the door said back in five, though they both knew it had been forty minutes, and neither of them had moved. the only light came from the reading nook lamp and the string of warm fairy lights emeline swore she hadn’t hung up for ambiance, but they always flickered like they knew better.

matt was sitting cross-legged on the floor, a forgotten cup of tea cooling beside him. emeline leaned against a shelf, eyes half-lidded, feet bare, her braid half undone like she’d tried to look put together and changed her mind halfway through.

“you always look like you’re about to run.”

he didn’t answer at first. just tapped his fingers on the mug’s handle. “you always look like you’d let me.”

she blinked. tilted her head. “maybe. but i’d miss the noise you make.”

“what noise?”

emeline smiled. “the one where you almost laugh. but then don’t.”

he looked up then. really looked. she had that look again—the one that made him want to write poems and burn them in the same breath.

“what do you do when it’s quiet like this?” matt asked.

emeline whispered. “listen.”

"to what?” he replies

emeline softly says: “what the silence is trying to say.” the air buzzed like maybe the silence was screaming.

he reached for the second cup she’d made without asking if he wanted it, and she didn’t comment when he took a sip. she just sat down across from him, knees bumping his. close, but not close enough to be something.

“my mom used to say i talked too much as a kid. said i filled every room like i was scared of the dark.” matt murmured.

emeline tilted her head. “and now?”

“now i think the dark is just quieter than i expected.” matt replied.

she doesn’t say anything. just leans forward, pressing her forehead gently to his for one breath, maybe two. “you don’t have to fill this room.”

he wanted to kiss her. didn’t. but the thought stuck to the inside of his ribs. when she pulled away, it was like she’d never leaned in at all. except she had. and he knew. and maybe she knew he knew.
