Biodegradable cooling film reflects 99% of sunlight and cuts energy use without electricity

An international team of scientists from Zhengzhou University and the University of South Australia has developed a biodegradable cooling film that passively reduces surface temperatures by up to 9.2°C without using electricity.

Made from plant-derived polylactic acid (PLA), the bioplastic metafilm reflects nearly 99% of sunlight and emits internal heat into space, offering a sustainable alternative to air-conditioning.

Field tests showed it maintained cooling performance even under harsh UV and acidic conditions. The film could cut annual energy use by up to 20% in hot cities like Lhasa, China. Scalable, durable, and eco-friendly, the material has potential applications in buildings, transport, agriculture, electronics, and medical devices. The research was published in Cell Reports Physical Science.

Abidjan: More than 199 requests from all over Africa. For its second edition, the Fashionomics Africa contest wanted to once again celebrate emerging, committed and responsible African brands. Organized by the African Development Bank, Fashionomics Africa has just revealed its big winner for the second edition. This is Lohije from Nigeria. After only one year of existence, the brand has distinguished itself for its originality and its vision of sustainable fashion. Facebook Lohije After receiving 199 applications, a jury of professionals made an initial selection of three young brands: Diakwu Cloth from Nigeria, Reform Studio from Egypt and Lohije from Nigeria. These labels were then featured on a dedicated platform and the public was invited to vote for their favorite brand, between April 7 and 11. fashion website “We get requests from all over Africa. Many applicants come from English speaking countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya. We also have candidates from French-speaking countries, like Togo, Senegal, Benin, some candidates from Mali, it varies. I can say that we had good coverage on the continent,” Emanuela Gregorio, economist and coordinator of the Fashionomics Africa competition, told FashionUnited. Lohije, winner of the 2022 edition, succeeds the first winner, Pine Kazi: “At that time, we had received many applications, around 150 applications from sustainable fashion brands on the continent. Pine Kazi knew how to stand out. It is a sustainable brand based in Kenya that creates eco-friendly shoes from pineapple waste. We help them find investors. They were able to benefit from technical assistance and our network of partners. The main need was at the level of pineapple production, which needed to be increased. They also needed tools that were not available in Kenya. At the end of the competition, they managed to join forces with Indian companies to obtain this specific equipment”, says the coordinator of the program. A promising future for the big winner The winner of the Fashionomics Africa contest will receive a check worth $3,000 (2,869.50 euros), a certificate, the opportunity to participate in online events and participate in discussions on the main sustainable development challenges facing the industry. The winner also has access to a network of media and industry experts, and mentoring and networking opportunities through the contest's contributors. The goal is to help you develop your notoriety and be accessible to a larger audience. The other two finalists each receive a check for $1,500 (1,434.75 euros). “We want to follow these brands in their evolution, until they are completely independent. In the future, we want to grow this program and offer bigger prizes to the winners. For this, we need to attract more strategic partners”. Launched in 2020, the Fashionomics Africa competition is organized by the African Development Bank, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme, Parsons School of Design and strategy and communications consultancy, BPCM.
