Yazeba Read Through #5
Hey, I skipped a day as I spent it recovering from the sun trying to evaporate my brainfluids. But delightfully I am back presenting you a reading extravaganza of .. 2 pages!
So let’s get into them, with Page 19 - Characters
Once I open page 19, seeing the Grey box with half rounded edges immediately excites me, as that seems how fiction boxes are marked. I wonder if we'll see some of the other residents this time, I would be excited to see some interactions with them. If I had to put money on someone it would prob be Hey Kid, because after they just had been introduced on page 17, i find it hard to imagine either book or reader would hold out long without seeing them some more on page. Their pure existence shouts for attention. Maybe it's an interaction between Hey Kid and Parish, considering they are the only starting residents, who haven't been introduced in fiction yet.
Ok but into the first sub chapter (?): residents! I realy love the framing of yazeba being a story that revolves around the residents and this in turn being how they are defined. Defining what a resident is within the story instead of the world seems like it prevents confusion. It also just feels consistent with how the book positions its world as seen through a storytelling perspective. More than that though, it’s simply endearing, to know that these are in a way our companions on the journey with the bed and breakfast. It makes them immediately closer to me.
This is also where exchanging characters gets introduced and oh my god, the entire concept is so fun! I got a taste for it in wanderhome (buy it at its so good oh my god, buy it now on https://possumcreekgames.com/pages/wanderhome) where it is one of the features that make the npc system so impressive to me. The traits you compose them from makes exchanging feel so natural. It helps keep characters consistent and easy to get into, while allowing the player who takes them over to not feel incredibly bound to imitating exactly what the previous player of the character did with them and instead rely on their own interpretation of the trait moves to guide them.
The fact that in this book players are encouraged to do so with the main characters, to come to understand and reinterpret them together, is incredibly exciting. I wonder what is done in the character playbook design to keep up consistency, or to help work together towards a common goal with the character, and to make it intuitive to pick them up. "It gives the character room to grow in a new way" Is such a beautiful way of putting the act of exchanging them. It highlights how it adds to the story told, making it feel like a great formulation to excite readers. Hell, it makes me want to exchange which character I play with someone right now and I haven’t even seen a playbook yet, let alone played a character.
Oh Hey, it's actually Hey Kid in the fiction block! And parish! I love that the dynamic between them so far is one of patience on parishes side, it's very heart warming and I love that there doesn't seem to be principle character tension between the residents. I had somehow expected Parish to be more annoyed by Hey Kid, so this is just the most pleasant surprise.
Apart from that, hey kid seeing themselves in Gertrudes situation in a way that delights them is so... it's such a character move, it says so much about hey kids specific view of the world and their love for the b&b. It makes me yearn to see Gertrude and Hey Kid interact in another fiction block but. If they don't, damn me if I'm not motivated to do it myself in a chapter and see what happens. This is such s tier character interaction potential dropped and they haven't even interacted yet. It already makes me appreciate the strength of these fiction blocks, not just for giving guidance for play and dropping narrative hints, but for giving you moments of character interaction and interaction potential that makes you want to write a god damn coffee shop AU, which is perfect because by god are you given the framework to play one.
Next Sub Chapter: Guests! Speaking of there seemingly not being much base tension between the residents, I can’t help but notice (my brain just somehow reminded me) that I skipped past something on Page 17: the NEFARIOUS VILLAIN Rag-and-Bones. Yet another delicious breadcrumb my dopamine hungry brain would have jumped after, back to the table of contents and directly to wherever I could read more about whoever could be a foil to these wonderful people. What a delectable thing to throw into the whole vibe of Yazebas, it both fits perfectly and changes everything in a way. Like the name and whimsical grandiosity of “nefarious villain” don’t make it seem like the character would threaten the warm vibe of the bread and breakfast, but it also introduces so much new potential into the coming scenes. You can not imagine the restraint it takes to stay on my current page.
Thinking about the residents as the main cast for the Story that is Yazebas Bed and Breakfast, It makes a lot of sense to reserve the antagonistic forces for the guests. Afterall, an individual antagonistic factor might be better reserved for an episode of a cartoon instead of a mainstay for all of them. But it also opens such potential for the chapters re-playability to consider how much introducing an antagonistic guest as a tertiary character might change their whole tone and dynamic as compared to one with a sweet and helpful one. How different might a birthday for Gertrude play out when Rag and Bones has invited themselves to the party?
Now though, reading how the book itself describes guests absolutely adds an extra dimension to them. I love the idea that their fundamental feature is that they have another home. That to them, the bed and breakfast is not the center of their world, or at least not the only center. It fits so wonderfully with the way Hey Kid understands Getrude, immediately knows to see her as having become one of the people in the bed & breakfast whos world IS the b&b. The differentiation gives such an immediate way to grasp the difference between the two and understand why it’s these 6 (7) we’re focusing on.
What I absolutely didn’t expect is that you could play several guests at once. I don’t know why, reading it it just makes sense that you would, but it sounds so cool. I love the idea of grabbing a handful of ones favorite guests, those that you want to see more off, want to give a bit more screentime, feel like might add a bit to the scene and play them all! The prospect fills me with the sort of excitement I would get from looking at a box of toys knowing I could just use multiple at once. Have you ever seen a multi-launcher for mini beyblades? Amazing feeling. Remembering the size of the list of guests in the table of contents it also just makes sense. If you have a smaller playgroup, and most scenes call for 2 of the residents you would never get to play them all.
Taking care not to let playing multible guests overshadow other Players reminds me that this – playing a large assortment of side characters - is a role a GM would usually play. Thinking about it from a GM perspective, being able to use multiple Guests also feels like a move that makes sure scenes don’t feel underpopulated. I assume (bzw vaguely remember from things seen in the past) that guests are going to be less mechanically complicated then residents – likely to be closer to kin in wanderhome then a playercharacter. So I can imagine handling multiple of them is cognitively much easier to handle then for example multiple residents and therefore allows them to fill this mass of character space much better.
I think this – the way that Yazeba transforms and maps the well-known roles and relations of ttrpgs (GMs, Players, Player Characters, NPCs, Scenes and the way it’s connected through time and space) into it’s own storytelling space, is going to be very interesting to trace as we dig deeper. I find the idea fascinating that the way Guests work, might take advantage of some of the learned GM dynamics and abilities players might bring to the table, without needing to directly put itself into conversation with them.
For now I have to say: I lied to you. I’m only doing one-page afterall, because it’s gotten realy damn late as I am writing this and I can feel my thoughts getting sloppy.
See you tomorrow as i enter page 20 .. which is still on guests.

what i’d feed bloodborne characters + their favorite foods (pt.2)
part TWO lets go baby. thank you @hevriings for engaging me in this high level philosophical discussion
oedon chapel dweller five star buffet. my left arm. my legs. whatever they want they get it because i care them so so much. but honestly i do not know what they would actually eat.
queen annalise oh no. i am full of so much blood whatever can i do. i think i have to give some away. wink. but
yurie the last scholar another three course meal EXCEPT it’s also only if she’s going on a date with me because eileen still won’t return my calls. i still have the reservation and i intend to use it. but i think she’s another case of forgetting to eat because she’s super into learning about the eldritch truth but for some reason i think she would like black licorice.... like old people candies. the little strawberry buggers too.
rom the vacuous spider i would give her as many flies as she wants! likely cannibalizes the little spiders she spawns because she’s quirky and i love her for that! self sustaining queen!
micolash host of the nightmare i would not feed him i want him to starve. its what he deserves. i think his favorite food is raw meat because he’s on that carnivore diet grind. also there are so many leftover limbs from his unethical experiments and he doesn’t want them to go to waste :)
first vicar laurence i would give him a liter of 5 hour energy because i want to experiment on him and see what he does. he likes the old blood but only if he drinks it through an extravagant sippy straw after decanting it, because it “tastes better”
ludwig, the accursed i would give him ketamine and sugar cubes at the same time. i think he could be worse. his favorite food would be the blood of the innocent.
ludwig, the holy blade i would also give him ketamine but this time a lower dosage. his favorite food would be alfalfa sprouts and rolled oats :) but as a human he’s too busy saving people to have a favorite food but i think he would enjoy a good pint.
lady maria i would give her the whole world. i think she would have a sweet tooth that she tries to hide, but ultimately she has little candies that she has in her pockets. i think she likes caramels. + my friends vc: she probably doesn’t like fish :/ especially not after the Incident
saint adeline a strawberry parfait! but she likes that mushy gushy brainfluid. also i think she likes breakfast foods and in particular pancakes with fresh cream and strawberry
simon the harrowed friend vc: you can say that you’d feed him ME i deserve it he deserves it WE deserve it. also a nice charcuterie board and we are going to have a picnic in the hunter’s nightmare :) /end vc. he enjoys venison that he hunts himself and he seasons it with rosemary and butter. artisinal.
brador the church assassin im feeding him a bar of soap and washing it down with a quart of detergent. friend vc: the suspicious brown stuff in sewer and also the corpse of laurence. brador sticks laurence onto the bloodletter and roasts him slowly over an open flame :) seems like a guy who enjoys red meat.
wanderer yamamura i would give him a roasted sweet potato because he’s gone through a lot and deserves something comforting. friend vc: can i offer you a sweet potato in this trying time? i think he would enjoy very simple foods though. can’t stand yharnamite cuisine.
the messengers i’d scatter little starcandies for them like they’re soot sprites. i think they like eating hunter insights after they get evaporated by gehrman.

Brain Tumors
people writing stories that involve brain tumors or anyone that just wants to know how they are treated.
(my brother had a brain tumor last year so i am trying to inform y'all so people don't write/think the wrong things, obviously i don't know anything but i do know more than the average person knows about this)
first thing you need to know, there are multiple kinds of brain tumors. you have tumors on the side of your head, behind your head, basically everywhere.
for tumors on the back of your head:
it is possible for the tumor to block the exit for brainfluid, which causes:
nausea,
headaches,
sensitivity to light and noise,
dizziness
(symptomes that can make it seem like a migrain) (there can be more side-effects but these were the ones my brother had so i'm going off his story)
when the pressure of the brainfluid in the head gets too big, you can start seeing double. this happens after all the other previously mentioned side affects.
treatment
scans. usually, the person gets a mri-scan and other scans to see where the tumor is located and if there even is a tumor.
operation. this happened a day after the results were known. it was done this fast because of the immense pressure on the head and brain which can cause lasting damage should it get too big. the operation involves getting as much of the tumor removed, without hurting or damaging the rest of the body. (this means letting small parts stay in the body because they were too close to the brain to safely remove)
remember, this is all happening without knowing if the tumor is a benign tumor or a malignant tumor (if the tumor is just sitting there or if it is actively attacking/mutating your cells)
investigation. the removed part of the tumor is being investigated to see if it is benign or malignant and what kind of tumor it is. (in my brother's case, a malignant tumor called medulloblastoma)
the correct treatment is being put together, mostly exists out of a mixture between radiation and chemo.
fun fact, in the Netherlands there is a machine where radiation exists out of protons instead of elektrons.
the difference is that you can determine how deep the radiation goes, you can essentially say "stop, this depth and no further" which makes it easier and safer to operate because it can be stopped before hitting vital organs and thus limiting the side-effects.
this machine is three stories high and needs to be able to turn around the person so you need a room for the machine to move.
you get tattoos (a few dots) for the radiation-machine so you can lie the same every time and there are no accidents of accidentally radiating the wrong spot (they use a program so that the computer does the work and radiates the same spot, doctors don't need to use the machine themselves.
radiation is mostly combined with chemo, it is almost never enough to destroy the tumor completely.
a few weeks of intensive radiation (daily except the weekends to rest your body) is enough to weaken the tumor dramatically, though it still can grow back. chemo is usually administered as well, once a week. (chemo makes you lose your hair)
after 6 weeks of this intensive "battle", the person can go home and rest.
after 2 weeks, you get another mri to see how the tumor is doing, and you get a monthly chemotherapy-session of 3 or 4 days.
after you did that 6 times, you get another mri-scan to see how the tumor is going now and then there are only check-ups left.
check-ups happen once a month, then every 6 months, then yearly, then every 2 years, and lastly every 5 years. (if i remember the doctor's words correctly)
check-ups consist of:
mri-scans,
a chat with a doctor to talk about how you're feeling,
a talk with a psychologist,
a talk with a physiotherapist, (my brother had to learn how to walk again, some kids even lost their ability to talk and had to relearn that)
measuring and weighing yourself (chemo and/or radiation can stunt your growth)
a hearing test (some people can lose/damage their hearing so they can't hear higher tones)
chemo attacks all fast-spreading cells, including white blood-cells, what causes the lack of immune-system and can cause a need for a blood-transplant to not make you too weak. blood transplants were done monthly in my brother's case, but not all people need one. it also makes you lose your hair, but that was known.
Keep in mind that after everything, you need to think about a year of rehabilitation for a year of treatment to get back to where you were before everything that has happened, 2 years for 2 years treatment, but the older you get, the longer the rehabilitaion takes.
after your 20's, it will take double the amount of time and strength and effort to rehabilitate then someone under and around their 20's.
please add information if you know anything

lukewarm
past loves have been lukewarm and so i’ve spit them out
they never met the expectations held by my mouth
were they too high? some would say yes- i would disagree
just because love has never manifested physically
does not diminish the great desire to have and hold and be
IN LOVE is not a feeling i have every truly seen
outside of with my child, sometimes God, occasionally me
only one of those holds fast and strong, the others come and go
for i can’t predict how my mind may shift or how the seasons of Him flow
i want so badly to believe in Him and in myself
it’s hard when every man i’ve know has made me feel like less
how do i honor God when He is man and made them all?
and why did He create this self hatred that’s so strong?
imagination runs wild and free when someone shows up as pure
but hesitations and past relations bring my knees to the floor
oh please God, i be of Thee, shower me with grace
let truth be known, leave Your throne, and guide me on my way
i’d walk beside You fearlessly toward a subject who is fair
we’d live a righteous life and at the end meet You up there
we’d give our thanks and know without a doubt we were one soul
split apart in two bodies meant to meet and grow
i sit here in my solitude and dream of love so real
i know i’ve seen it once before, but to see is not to feel
prayers have gone unanswered and my Faith has been let down
if You are real, don’t hesitate-in love, Lord, let me drown

I'd like to add that it's totally possible for a rune to be called a Caryll rune, while not being transcribed/visualized by Caryll herself.
Caryll runes are called so because Caryll was the first one to visualize and work on them, creating the method of marking them into the mind and using their properties, she was the one who visualized and transcribed most of the runes but not all of them. The runes that "manifested", which werent thanks to her were the Guidance, Impurity and Milkweed runes. They are, however, still called Caryll runes because they fall in the category of runes and can be used through Caryll's method, it's from an academic/nomenclature perspective.
Guidance was discovered by Ludwig and the description doesnt mention whether it was transcribed by Caryll herself, it's just called a Caryll rune. But Ludwig was the first one to see it.
Impurity came from "inside the forbidden beast eater", which I believe can only be Valtr, unless there was another beast eater in lore but I doubt it. It also makes me believe to be the first (and only?) rune to have physically manifested in someone's entrails and not just a vision transcribed on a skull. Maybe it happened because Valtr ate an impure being (beast) and I guess he vomited the rune, or it was found transcribed in his stomach or the intestines. In a similar way to Ludwig's it's just called a Caryll rune, nothing about her transcribing it.
Milkweed was visualized by Adeline, therefore shouldnt that rune be called Adeline rune? She did it right in front of us. Whether the Adeline we knew was a real person in the Nightmare or just a representation of who she was, the process of "receiving" these runes as visions was shown through her (to us). Maybe Caryll didnt need brainfluid for these (besides the possibility of these experiments not even being practiced during Caryll's time yet, or Caryll already being dead), maybe she was more like a medium and could hear the sounds and visualize the runes easier than Adeline, but Adeline is still the source of this rune, not Caryll.
Runes transcribed by Caryll have such mentioned in their descriptions, such as Corruption, Radiance, the lake and sea runes, Beast, the metamorphosis runes (all of them have "A secret symbol left by Caryll" in the description). Runes that dont, but I believe to have been from the work of Caryll are Oedon writhe (since Formless Oedon is, in description, and the 2 could have been discovered closely), Clawmark (along studies with Beast) and Blood Rapture (along discovery of Corruption). Beast's Embrace and Hunter runes still have some doubt in me, but if they were discovered by Laurence and/or Gehrman/Eileen it'd have been mentioned.
Therefore her early death doesnt conflict with Ludwig's Guidance rune. The only thing to mention is that Caryll was just a student and lower in rank than Willem, hence his ignorance of her work. Depictions of her as such important figure must have been brought up after Byrgenwerth's fall, possibly by Laurence/the Healing Church after finding her works.
Bloodborne Lore: Caryll
So I’ve seen a lot of theories about the identity of the “runesmith of Byrgenwerth” behind the Caryll runes. Some say it’s the Forgotten Madman boss of the chapel dungeons, some say it’s the Oedon Chapel dweller, a secret conduit of Oedon, some the Blood Minister from the opening, and even the Witch of Hemwick.
Naw, it’s this lady
The statue behind the Memory Altar where you plug the Caryll runes in your brain? That’s Caryll’s domain, and this is our Caryll. She is quite an old figure, as she was revered enough to have similar statues raised in the Pthumerian tombs (these were obviously a later addition, as she does not have the pronounced Pthumerian cheekbones and brow, nor does she have the desiccated face of the degenerate modern Pthumerian forms. The statues are also far fresher and less degraded looking than most Chalice architecture, so I assume it’s from Yharnamite culture, during its heights (you know, before everyone was a crazy beast monster). She was also a contemporary or predecessor of the Ludwig phase of Yharnamite history, as he encountered her Guidance rune.

So Caryll seems to have been a member of the faculty or student body of Byrgenwerth who first received the inhuman utterances of the great ones. Statues tend to capture the iconic likeness of someone, so I assume she was a faculty member due to the apparent age of the woman depicted in the statue, a figure with some authority and respect, despite being a college professor. Due to several rune’s statement that Willem would have been proud of her work due to their lack of blood-use, many place Caryll in a post-Willem era, but that conflicts with other rune lore (such as Ludwig’s discovery of what was identified as a Caryll rune), and the fact that Willem’s current state of feebleness is probably fairly recent, too narrow a time frame. I instead believe that he and Caryll’s work was fairly parallel, with two branches of discourse created at Byrgenwerth; she sought enlightenment via runic transcription, he sought enlightenment via…well, see the entire fucking game. She was however, respected enough and probably incorporated into the Church’s mythos as a saint - see the nearly Marian iconography of her statue. There is also a likely cultural divide; due to the memory altar’s runic tools being hidden behind the custodianship of the Witch of Hemwick, I believe she was from this subculture of the…whatever you call the Yharnamite’s ethno-cultural group… it’s mostly due to the tool’s location, Caryll’s assumed gender, and the statue’s rather shawl-heavy, grandmotherly appearance, but I believe that she was the matriarch of the Hemwick Charnel Lane culture, just as Willem is the patriarch of the mainstream Yharnamite culture. I believe she did not survive past the early phases of Byrgenwerth’s cultural take-over, possibly while tomb prospecting or in her experiments. Not much evidence for this, other than that her work could not have had an overlap with Willem’s in his intellectual prime and peak of influence, as he was fairly ignorant of it. She may have been one of the first to venture into the tombs, perhaps driven by what seems to be the call of Oedon or a similar entity (Oedon is the only Great One actually namechecked by multiple runes). She heard the utterances of the great ones and had their runes literally burnt into her skull, just as we learned that Willem’s goal of lining brains with eyes was in no way metaphorical. She heard these arcane utterances, and it literally left marks in her skull. Same with the hunter’s mark - it is actually in the head of our hunter and Gherman, which is why a release from the Moon Presence contract involves the First Hunter lobbing off our dreamland’s head with his scythe. It’s severing us from the rune, and likely only a rune-marked hunter can perform such a releasing decapitation. Highlander rules, baby. Her experiments involved her undergoing a craniotomy (or, gods forbid, performing one on herself) and having the runes carved into her skull transcribed. She then formulated a process for these runes to be efficiently and routinely transcribed in the skulls of others. Thus, the obvious, Frankenstein’s Monster style scarification on the statue. Also nice to have a little Frankenstein shout out in a game of pseudo-vampires and werewolves. This repeated craniotomy might have even been what killed her, leading to her semi-sainthood as a martyr to progress. Also, the focus on a skull, rather than a bone, might have been the reason Laurence’s skull is on display in the Grand Cathedral, and the focus on bone and bone ash seen in Hemwick, but this is just speculation. Perhaps the Witches of Hemwick began collecting and processing human bodies during the crisis, harvesting eyes and ripping open heads, in an attempt to find more runes. Yet another purely scientific pursuit degraded into a mad religious ritual over time.
Addendum: @darksouschef: I don’t think it’s a statue of the doll; both women are tall, but nothing else about them really resembles each other, at least to me; aparent age, hairline, eyebrows, nasal structure, and general facial structure simply don’t match. Also, we know the doll is based on Maria, which would be a fun Marian statue shout-out but simply doesn’t fit the timeline or craniotomy scars. Also, I believe that the doll isn’t an old one, but one of two dreamlands counterparts of the real Maria (the Doll is her idealized, maternal side, while the Clocktower Maria is a shade of her merciless, desparing hunting aspect). The doll does not seem to have an ulterior motive; you can even catch her praying for your safety to Flora of the Moon. I also believe that the Craniotomy Statues were once more important, as they resemble the waystones or checkpoints from the Project Beast trailers.
