34. Daybreak, by Brian Ralph
Tumblr media
Owned: No, library Page count: Unknown/not numbered My summary: After. The shambling husks of humanoid monsters stalk the wreckage of the world. You have been surviving out here alone for so long. But then you encounter a one-armed man who takes you in. It's safe with him, in a hole under the ground. But you're going to need food, supplies. And scavenging runs come with their own dangers… My rating: 4/5 My commentary:
Accusations that I only agree to cover in different libraries entirely to check their teen and graphic novel sections for anything interesting are not entirely unfounded. Guess where I found this book? That's right, when I was covering at the Library Where None Of The Staff Get Chairs. I rebelled by stealing their books. Anyway, this was an interesting one, and a complete shot in the dark. I liked the look of it just from the cover, but when I had a closer look (and to my dismay) it had no blurb or anything on the back, nothing to tell me what it was actually about. Against my usual policy, I decided to check it out anyway, since it's only a graphic novel and not exactly a huge commitment if I didn't like it. But, as it turned out, I did like it! And for one big reason - I'm always a slut for second person narratives.
I've never seen a graphic novel be told in a second person format before! You are most definitely a character in the story - though there's no dialogue directly attributed to you, it's implied that you're speaking, and you do things in the narrative even though no part of you is seen. You're always 'behind the camera', out of view but present, having an impact on the narrative. And that's always interesting to me, how you can navigate having a second person narrative when you don't know who your reader is going to be or how they're going to react to the story. It really helps the reader identify with the narrative, and place themself into the situation presented. And the story itself is wonderfully ambiguous. The creatures that plague the land are zombies, but they're never named as such and their threat is left largely in the peripherals of the story until later. There's a quiet menace and sense of dread that builds up throughout the early stages, as we don't know for sure what's happened or what went wrong, just that something has. It's disquieting, and makes for a lovely atmosphere. This book was short but sweet, and I really enjoyed it!
Next, rebellions, riots, and brave women.

"The Mechanisms were Jonathan Sims college band" and "Jon is the secret real past of Jonny D'ville" are both great takes but I present "Jon's descend into an unwilling antichirst figure is The Mecs new album and Jonny plays him in the songs because they just have very similar voices for some reason."

Conclave (2024)
Director - Edward Berger, Cinematography - Stéphane Fontaine
"Our faith is a living thing precisely because it walks hand-in-hand with doubt. If there was only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery. And therefore no need for faith. Let us pray that God will grant us a Pope who doubts. And let him grant us a Pope who sins and asks for forgiveness and who carries on."
