General Jack D. Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. 1946, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Uh, Jack, Jack, listen... tell me, tell me, Jack. When did you first... become... well, develop this theory?

General Jack D. Ripper: [somewhat embarassed] Well, I, uh... I... I... first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.

General Jack D. Ripper: Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.

General Jack D. Ripper: I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No.

General Jack D. Ripper: But I... I do deny them my essence.

Es como si alguien hubiera entrado a la cabeza del Brig. Gen. Jack D. Ripper en Dr. Strangelove (OUR PRECIOUS BODILY FLUIDS!!!) y hubiese escrito un guión sobre el delirio que ahí encontró. Luego el guión se lo llevaron a Ken Russell para que lo filmara...

"Necesitaré 10 millones de dólares para filmar esto." dijo Ken Russell.

"Lo sentimos, Ken Russell, pero te tienes que gastar 100 millones de dólares. A ver cómo le haces." le dijeron los productores.

El resultado es la película de horror más absolutamente orate que he visto en un rato. Creo que cuando la gente habla de que el cine está muriendo, se refiere a este tipo de películas. Viajes increíbles sin la preocupación de satisfacer absolutamente a nadie, que seguro costaron un dineral y que nadie va a querer volver a apostarle a algo semejante jamás.

Tenemos que celebrar más a Verbinski, un cineasta con una imaginación tan peculiar que puede tomar uno de los tropes más gastados del género (el venado que se atraviesa en la carretera) y hacerlo sentir totalmente nuevo. Ah, y fuera de Chronicle, a probado ser el único director que sabe qué hacer con la extraña presencia de Dane DeHaan en pantalla.

Absoluta joya, que si bien no gustó a muchos en el 2017, puedo apostar que apasionará a varios en el 2027.
