History of JOHN HANDS MEMORIAL CHURCH - Ballari, KARNATAKA, India
¶ Daly Felicitus, The United Nations Ministry.
Remembering the contribution of Rev. John Hands
Courtesy: M. Ahiraj BALLARI, FEBRUARY 05, 2015 20:47 IST, The HINDU National DAILY.
The contribution and services of Rev. John Hands, a lesser-known missionary who spent more than three decades in Ballari, towards popularising Kannada among non-Kannadigas, especially the British, and establishing Kannada-medium schools, much earlier than Rev. Ferdinand Kittel, is being recalled by celebrating the bicentennial celebrations of his arrival here way back in 1810.
John Hands was the first Protestant missionary to be sent by the London Missionary Society to come here on May 5, 1810, to establish a Canarese (Kannada) Mission and commence the study of the Canarese language.
On realising that it was difficult for him to study without either a dictionary or grammar, he laid emphasis on preparing a lexicon from English to Kannada and another from Kannada to English and also a book on Kannada grammar.
In 1811, he established a charity residential school in Kannada medium in the Fort area in the city and also an English medium school for the children of the British. He was also instrumental in setting up a school for girls in the Fort area.
Rev. Hands was also the first to translate the Bible into Kannada.
In recognition of his pro-academic activities, the East India Company allotted ‘Neelamma Garden’ to him in Brucepet, which came to be known as mission garden where Rev. Hands established a Kannada school, a church, a Kannada printing press (first one to be established).
In 1844, the first Kannada newspaper ‘Samachar’ was printed at the Ballari Mission Press. Several Kannada books, including the Bible, were also published from here.

Daly Felicitus at JOHN HANDS MEMORIAL CHURCH. 23.02.2020, Sunday.
“For reasons, there has been some delay in organising the function earlier. Now, a detailed plan of action is being chalked out to organise the function in a befitting manner”, Mr. Simeon said adding that seminars on his contribution, books and other exhibition were also being planned.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Bruce, please!"
Peter begged as Bruce practically pushed him out the the door.He held on to the door frame.
"Just one night!"
Bruce sighed clearly exhausted. Well it was about midnight.
"Peter-"
Bruce began as Peter span on his heels to face the older man.
"It's too cold and late for me to walk home. Please?"
Bruce bit his lip as Peter gave his best puppy dog eyes.
"Fine."
He sighed as the younger man grinned.
"Thank you."
Bruce gave a weak smile in return before speaking again.
"What about you're aunt?Shouldn't you tell her where you are?"
Peter shook his head grin still present.
"Oh I called her awhile ago."
Bruce went silent as Peter realized he had screwed himself over.
"Wait I- I didn't-"
Bruce glared before grabbing Peter's coat off the rack and shoving it into his arms.
"You're going home,Peter. Now."
Peter groaned slipping on his coat as Bruce stormed off to bed.
"So close!"
