Isabel and Her Colores Go to School by Alexandra Alessandri: This beautiful, synaesthetic story follows a little girl, Isabel, who is nervous before her first day of school. She feels at home speaking Spanish, which she experiences as warm colors, while English feels blue and stormy to her. And at her new school, almost everyone speaks English! Her mom empathises, and sends her with some advice - "A mal tiempo, buena cara" - to bad times, a good face. She makes it through by copying what others do, but still feels alone. Even when another girl invites her to sit next to her, there's a miscommunication - the girl asks to be friends, and when Isabel says "No entiendo," (I don't understand), the girl thinks she's rejecting her. But later, at art time, Isabel feels at home with all the beautiful colors, and finds a way to communicate - creating a picture of herself and her new friend that fixes their new bond and delights her class.  This beautiful story is told in both English and Spanish, with Spanish words interspersed throughout the English text and a Spanish translation in a colorful bubble on each page.
