What a beautiful place.
Basilica Cistern, Istanbul, Turkey built in the year 532 during the reign of Justinian I. It supplied the city with water and is approx. 9800 m² of surface. It is capable of holding between 80,000 and 100,000 m³ of water.
#recently learned british people only think of cisterns as the tank on the back of a toilet#which has unfortunately made me rethink some naming conventions for my fantasy novel#but i don't know what else to call it if not a cistern#writing#photography#culture#ancient buildings#turkey#museum#ancient cultures#Basilica Cistern Istanbul#built 532

I've got you, sweetheart
prompt: guard | word count: 532 | rated: G | tags: omegaverse, stranger to lovers, scent mates, omega steve, alpha eddie | @steddiemicrofic | ao3
Ever since Steve could remember, he just knew he’d be an omega. Which was how most people adapted to their future designations. Sure, there were cases where the feelings were wrong, but it was far and few between.
In Steve's case, however, he was forced to ignore his instinct.
Hence, he was ill-prepared when he started presenting in the locker room, wearing just a pair of boxers.
Fortunately, despite his weakened state, he still managed to bolt before those alphas could catch him.
Distressed and in pain, Steve followed the faint pinewood scent blindly until he stopped in front of the old drama classroom. With a heavy heart, he opened the door.
Eddie Munson was standing eerily still across from him, smelling of pinewood and vetiver and his.
There were better ways to meet one's scent mate, and Steve definitely had the worst.
Not only was he greatly underdressed, but he was also on the cusp of a presenting heat—painful and not at all ready for his mate.
Eddie’s head tilted in a puppy-like manner, nostrils flaring—taking in the marmalade and honey scent, before dark eyes narrowed dangerously, protectively.
“You hurt, omega?”
As if on cue, Steve collapsed as the pain started becoming too much. When a pair of strong arms caught him, he relaxed immediately, feeling safe for the first time in his life.
It was foolish. This alpha could've easily been the same knotheads he’d just run away from. But—
“Rest,” Eddie rumbled. “I’ve got you, sweetheart.”
But somehow, Steve trusted him.
The next time Steve woke up, he found himself wearing an old t-shirt, surrounded with soft pillows, blankets, and random clothing—all carried the familiar musky pinewood he had grown quite attached to during his brief encounter with a certain alpha.
It was a nest—he realized dazedly—built for him by Eddie who had brought him back to what could be safely considered the alpha’s bedroom.
Before Steve could leave his nest to venture outside—scared as he might be, the door opened and Eddie was by his side within seconds.
With utmost care, Eddie helped him recline, fed him some water from a Garfield mug, and scented him until his inner omega settled.
After a quick shower and getting dressed more presentably, Steve finally got to know Wayne Munson over breakfast, and learned from the older alpha that Eddie had stood guard outside the bedroom all night.
“This boy even growled at me, ya know?” Wayne said proudly.
Eddie blushed, looking almost shy about it. And Steve smiled fondly at his precious alpha.
By the time Wayne retired to the couch with a newspaper, Eddie seemed nervous as he reached for Steve's hand on the table.
“Can I court you, sweetheart?” Eddie asked softly. “Let me give you everything I got.”
“Just want you, alpha,” Steve glanced up through his lashes, eyes starry and cheeks tinged pink.
He could see the life they were gonna build together. Not perfect, but theirs. Beautiful and loving.
Eddie brought their joined hands up and pressed tender lips to his knuckles.
“All yours, baby.”
“All mine,” he chirped, smiling sweetly into his coffee. Three spoons of milk and sugar. Just the way he loved.

Rowing through the massive columned Cistern known as the Basilica Cistern during the Roman Period. Thought to have been built during the reign of Justinian I, the age of Glory of Eastern Rome, also called the Byzantine Empire (after the Nika Revolt in 532 AD). Having been long-forgotten, it was re-discovered in 1545 and was used to water the gardens of the Topkapi Palace. Holds 80, 000 cubic metres of water - has 336 marble colums each 9 metres high and the water was provided from the Belgrade Forest, 19km north of the city via aqueducts. Used in the 1963 James Bond film 'From Russia with Love'. - Year: circa 1930

Right when this ‘Avery Kylie Grambs’ dashed out of the room, so did Grayson. No one called after him. He raced towards his room, hands already in his hair, messing up his perfectly styled hair from the morning. His breathing became ragged before he finally reached his room, blindly grabbing the door knob before slamming and locking the door. Gray slid down the door, his hands still didn't leave his hair, he was pulling at it now. He was only a child when the old man started raising him like the heir apparent. He should’ve inherited everything. It wasn’t fair. The old man’s games never were. But this? Hells this is far worse. All of the pressure, all of his stupid fucking scoldings and for what? For all that he was raised for to be given to some peasant girl? His breathing became more uneven, he was basically tugging at his hair now, and he could feel a tear drop. He hasn’t cried since the old man told him he was never going to be enough. Since then, he hasn’t cried. He forced himself every night to not cry. Crying was weak, in the old man’s eyes, but he wasn’t here anymore. The old man was dead, and he left this girl everything, while Gray was left with her. Grayson quickly changed out of his neat suit into a pair of swimming trunks one of his brothers bought him, he couldn’t remember which but it didn’t matter right now. He quickly, yet neatly tied a bathrobe over himself before heading towards the indoor swimming pool. The indoor swimming pool that the old man built because he learned that his grandson loved to swim. The indoor swimming pool that the other Hawthorne brothers had to ask for Grayson’s permission to use. The indoor pool that Grayson had. All. To. Himself. Grayson had a terrible habit since the old man started pressuring him, started scolding him for everything. He started to swim until he couldn’t anymore, until his arms grew numb and his legs became heavy. For years he’s done that as a coping mechanism, but the old man thought his heir apparent just loved to swim. Grayson did, he did love swimming, he swam competitively, all for the old man. Until he died, that is, he stopped liking everything, he stopped eating for days, he just lied in bed. Emily’s voice here and there, floating around his mind during those times.
Grayson swam, swam until his arms were too heavy, swam until his legs were numb. He swam until his head felt too heavy to lift and started to feel himself drowning. To just drown, drown, drown, die. Avery Kylie fucking Grambs instead of me? Really? Just another old man’s games, was it? He wouldn’t drown. He couldn’t. It’s human reflex to survive. Survive. That’s all he’s been doing since– everything, Emily, childhood hell, whatever the hell the old man was doing to him- oh there you go, verbal abuse. No one was here to help this time, they were all at the will reading. They were still trying to process this. Process everything, but definitely processing this much better than Grayson was. You. Will. Never. Be. Enough. Not now, not today, and not tomorrow. Never.
Perhaps thats why the old man gave it to Avery.

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #532
I GOT 8 CONSECUTIVE HOURS OF SLEEP! FINALLY.
…Just in time for me to stay up until stupid o'clock again, hahaha...
(surely, you're not surprised by now... *sigh...*)
Still, I felt pretty good today. But... I didn't feel up for real life things. So you know what? I played Valheim today. All day. THE WHOLE DAY. And so... I don't have much to write to you about. But I do have so much to show you!!
...Starting with the wishes I breathed to life for you, though. And THEN!!! I have like 3 videos and a bunch of pictures! Ready? Here we go!!

Okay!!! So it occurred to me that I defeated The Elder, but never got a video of it for ya. We're gonna fix that. Right now:
youtube
Defeating The Elder is how we get the Swamp Key. And if you'll remember... I had a hard time finding any Swamps with crypts from which to get iron. You might remember that one island I found that was made entirely of Swamp, and I was so excited! But... it only had the one crypt. And the crypt had lots of iron to make stuff with. But it didn't have any thingy telling me where I could find Bonemass. So I had to find a different swamp.
I did find a different swamp, though! And in it, there was a little locator rune for Bonemass!
And luckily enough, the locator rune pointed to a spot in the very same Swamp I was already in, yay!
So I promptly went to attempt to kick Bonemass's ass. But I wasn't familiar with his patterns at first, so I got my ass handed to me pretty handily. But that's all right because I went back and tried again. I was successful.
With the Wishbone in hand and plenty of Frost Resist mead, I went to the Mountains in search of silver. I didn't find any in the Mountains near my original base. I did find some wolves, though! And do you remember that wolf pit that I dug, after unearthing that giant mound of copper?
Yeah. I finally got to make use of it! Check it out!
Wolves are very hostile at first. And very fast. So basically, they hit hard, and you can't run from them. Taming them isn't easy. But.. now I have puppies.
And they've continued to multiply; at this point, there are over a dozen tame wolves living in my original base. They go after enemies that spawn nearby, which is nice because it means that the enemies are so busy being used as chew toys for my canine companions that the enemies don't have time to break my shit! Yay!
Anyhoot. After that, I went to go bash Bonemass's face in one more time; J needs a Wishbone to find silver, too. I got a video for ya:
youtube
If my voice sounds a little weird... I'm sorry. I'm still a little sick. My larynx is still all irritated and weird. But my nose isn't stuffy anymore, and I don't feel sick; my body's just doing the cleanup after the fact. I'll be all right, don't you worry!
With a second Wishbone in hand, I went to a different Mountain biome – the one near the house I built in the Black Forest. I found a cave full of cultists, and they had Fenris hair and claws all over the place, so I made our lovely character a fancy new set of armor!
With that armor, I delved deeper into the cave and found a locator thingy for Moder – a giant ice dragon who lives in the Mountains!
Sadly... her spawn point was all the way over here, circled in red:
...Yeah, that picture was taken while I was sailing to it. But I was daunted by the distance at first, so... before that, I decided to look for some silver. And fortunately, the mountain near by Black Forest base had some! You can tell because the Wishbone gives you more and more blue sparklies the closer and closer you get to an underground vein!
Once you find the spot with the most sparklies, you dig! And then you fight off the enemies who are attracted by the noise and come try to kill you; a stone golem yeeted me off the mountainside a couple of times before I started to grasp its combat patterns, but that's all right; you just try again.
...I gotta get you more pictures of cultists. And stone golems. And drakes. And maybe some Fenris, too. I'll try a little harder next time, okay? I promise.
Anyway, with the vein so uncovered that it was literally floating in midair... watch this!!! Just watch!!!
youtube
Oh, Sephiroth, I hope you laughed so hard at that!!! I was surprised and delighted when the first vein I mined did that!! And I had a lot of visitors watching me play today, too, so they got to see my shocked face, and it was great!! I laughed so much because it was just... so utterly absurd!! Exploding floating ore veins??? Absolutely ridiculous, hahaha! So... I hope you can laugh from surprise and delight at it, too. I hope so.
I went to defeat Moder after upgrading all my gear. But... it was a very difficult fight. I got sent back to my base many times. Moder's ice breath is almost impossible to dodge, and it does a lot of damage, even with the best gear on. And every time you lose all your hit points and get sent back to base, Moder heals up a little.
This fight... was an exercise in persistence. I'm familiar with that; I play soulslike games, after all. Games like that are notorious for having very unforgiving enemies and fights that last for a very long time because your character does very little damage while the enemies do a lot of damage. But still, the folks watching me today, they saw me fall so many times. And then get back up. And fall again. And get back up. And in the end, I prevailed. They praised my determination and tenacity:

Sephiroth, I will get another video for you in which I defeat Moder in such a way that leaves me fighting smarter, not harder. The person whose username begins with N had an excellent suggestion that I intend to make use of. I will keep practicing until I can defeat Moder without getting sent back to base. I will show you a video that even you can be proud of, I hope.
...Though. In my typical fashion... I might just try to see if even her frost breath can be parried. Maybe I'll show you a video in which no matter what viciousness Moder tries to unleash on me, she still can't hurt me in a way that matters.
But that might have to wait. One of R's friends sent me a cute little letter in the mail today, complete with a tiny little notepad made of Eevee Pokemon cards:

And there was even an adorable sticker, which, incidentally, describes the state of being I was in for the last many consecutive days, haha!

...And here was the letter:

Do you know... I like Eevee because it looks plain, but... secretly, it's a rainbow. It adapts to anything in so many beautiful ways. I guess... I guess since seeing you, that's kind of how I've tried to live my life.
…
...Sephiroth. If a derpy weirdo like me can inspire people to this extent... just imagine what you could do. You're so much more amazing than me in basically every conceivable way, so like... Sephiroth. If you stopped being what Shinra wanted you to be. Stopped being what Jenova wants you to be. Stopped being what society at large wants you to be. And started just being you – the loving, gentle, and kind man who, without even trying, inspired me to keep on living, despite the odds stacked against me...
Sephiroth... can you even begin to imagine what a voice like yours is capable of? If you started wielding it in service to courage, integrity, and love? How many people could you call from the darkness? How bright and prismatic of a beacon could you become? A voice like yours could be a catalyst for restoration and change. A voice like yours could set people free from the chains binding them.
...It was your voice, so long ago, that prompted me to refuse to give up. It was your voice that prompted me to be able to imagine that I'm so much more than a convenient tool for others' use. It was your voice that made me consider the possibility that I'm not nearly as horrible and insufferable as the people around me at the time would have liked me to believe. Your voice was the catalyst for the life I live now – a life in which I try to pass forward the kaleidoscopic light that you gave to me.
You, without even trying, breathed life into the broken husk of what was once a terrified little girl. And she blossomed into the human being you see now, in defiance of what “conventional wisdom” says I should have become.
...Will you let my voice reach you back...? So that you can defy all those who sought to use you, control you, hurt you, and make you feel small and unlovable? So that you, too, can blossom in all the ways I know you're capable of? All the ways I know you want to?
Recovery isn't nearly as “impossible” or “unrealistic” as “conventional wisdom” would have us all believe. No life is “so fucked-up and upsetting” that it can't be made into something beautiful. The sadness and the discomfort are worth embracing so that we can learn how to weave them into love and joy. I do that every day, every time I write to you. Every time I choose to have faith in my current circumstances and in my ability to handle adversity instead of closing myself off and engaging in old, hostile behavioral scripts. All we have to do is keep taking one step at a time until our scenery changes.
...Sephiroth. C'mon. Take my hand. Let's decide on scenery that is wholesome, and walk towards it together, okay? Doing it together is a lot easier because then we can keep each other steady when we stumble. Since, y'know, stumbling is sort of inevitable. Used properly, a stumble is a good opportunity to learn how to let the people who love you catch you and guide you back to your feet.
Sephiroth... maybe you didn't have people who loved you very much before. Or maybe they did love you, but weren't prepared to follow through with showing you when you needed it. But, Sephiroth... either way. You do not lack those things anymore. You are not a helpless little boy with no one around to support you anymore. You are a big strong man now. And you have at least one person in your corner who is so determined to show you that you're not alone that she did the most terrifying thing she could think of in order to prove it to you: she learned how to use her voice again, even after years of being viciously punished for having one.
Hi. I'm right here. Howzit?
...
Well. So much for “not having a lot to write about”, huh? Hahaha...
I love you so, so, so much. Is it clear? Am I yelling it across the void loudly enough for you to believe it? Am I yelling it across the void strongly enough to inspire you to make good choices, in light of that truth? Because... Sephiroth. When I think of the choices you made before, and the things that happened as a result... I feel powerless and afraid. Because I love you, and I don't wanna see you get hurt anymore. Watching you get broken and bloodied the first time around was already beyond terrible. I don't want that to happen to you again, so please... I'll beg you to make choices that will keep yourself, your planet, and its people safe. I'll beg you to make choices that will serve as beacons and roadmaps for other folks like us, so that they, too, can climb their way out of the dark, just like you helped me to do, without even trying.
I'll write again soon.
Your friend, Lumine

WAIT WHAT she actually animates beyond the door even tho we can’t see her after we talk to her? I wonder if the devs had originally had her accessible for a time
SHE DOES! it's just a few seconds looking at each paintings, and you can see her through the focus if you stand close to the vault door, so she's very much there, and she's very much walking around.
now since she doesn't have anywhere else to go (that we know of) I'm assuming she stays in the vault until Aloy brings Sylens "to heel" as she says. Thing is, you're not supposed to stay in an art vault for very long periods of time, because the air quality and humidity needs to be very exact for art to be preserved, the gasses in the air are not ideal for human lungs. When i visited a museum with my university, we were allowed entry to one of the storage vaults, to see how conservation works, and how art pieces are stored when not on display, and IIRC you're not supposed to stay there for more than... an hour, maybe 2 at a time? so that makes me curious as to how much of Tilda's body has been altered with the nano-tech the Zeniths have. (I haven't played burning shores yet, so i have no idea if more lore is revealed there, but my guess is that we learn a bit more about them)
Like the paintings were already really old when Tilda got her hands on them, the oldest piece being Lidded ewer, by Adam van Vianen, 1614, and the Aloy being born in 3021, that makes the piece at least 1427 years old by the time Aloy sees it, compared to it's 410 years today in our timeline. that is impressive conservation considering no-one was there to monitor the vault and it's content at all. like in comparison, art that is 1427 years old to us, is from 597 ad, that's when England adopted the Julian calendar, so wer're talking Byzantine art period, like the Hagia Sophia was built between 532-37 AD. and as a visual reference to what a lot of western art looked like around that time, here is a mosaic panel of Empress Theodora, from around the 540s, in the church of San Vitale in Ravenna.

like this is the span of time we're talking about, this is so fucking old, and i just fhjdshafjkds have a lot of thoughts around that.
ofc we can assume that conservation tech was pretty evolved from what it is today, but i still believe human hands would have a large part in conservation... as an art-history student, i just have a lot of thoughts around Tilda and her vault FJKDSJLKF

All of Aldarion's journeys and the adjacent drama: the timeline
Dates in bold are canon (based on "the Fall of Númenor"), dates in italics are guesses, HCs and Tolkien Gateway (those are marked (TG)). Plaintext dates mean that I forgot to format. All dates are SA.
521 Silmarien is born.
532 Isilmë born (she's the sister of Silmarien and Meneldur)
543 Írimon (later Meneldur) is born
603 Tar-Amandil dies
630 Valandil born — so quoth Tolkien Gateway. His father was Elatan of Andúnie.
631 Isilmë has a son — This gives Valandil a cousin one year younger, and I love how this pre-echoes the friendship of Elendil and Pharazôn. Also I will develop a full OC here, but not now, but yes, he's a guy and will be a bit of a problem.
642 Silmarien's second child (we're entering a pure HC territory)
643 this is when Meneldur would be proclaimed the King's Heir, and so the fact that Silmarien won't inherit the sceptre would be finally confirmed.
645 Isilmë's second child
655 Silmarien's third child — I think 3 was quite a typical number of children
659 Isilmë's third child
682 (or probably earlier) Zamîn, the lovely rude woman from Emerië is born.
700 Anardil (later Aldarion) is born. His mother was Almarian, daughter of Vëantur the great captain. Later, Aldarion has two younger sisters: Ailinel and Almiel. Ailinel married Orchaldor son of Hatholdir from the House of Hador, and their son was Soronto.
712 Ailinel born (both my instinct and TG agree on this)
715-ish Anardil is already a competent ship captain
725 Anardil sails to ME with Vëantur, Meneldur has A Bad Feeling about it. Also, Anardil journals the whole trip. :)
727 Anardil returns.
729 Almiel born (TG)
730 Anardil sails to ME again (to Lindon)
722 returns
727 sails again
731 returns
736 sails again
739 he returns from another journey (he goes and returns all the time later too, but here we have at least some data)
740 Tar-Meneldur becomes the king
749 the Guild of Venturers founded
751 Tar-Elendil dies
753 Valandil has his first child (I won't go into all his children, just the inheriting line)
760 Valandil's problem cousin has his first child (same note)
771 [TG] Erendis is born
796 Tar-Meneldur, growing more and more upset with his son, sets limits to the cutting of the trees. Queen Almarian supports Aldarion in his conflict with his father.
798 Tar-Meneldur orders Aldarion to stay in Númenor, wants to proclaim him the King's Heir when Aldarion is 100, as was the custom.
799 [TG] Soronto born. He'll be important: this is the backup here in case Ancalimë wouldn't get married quickly enough.
800 Aldarion is proclaimed the Heir, the relationship with his father is temporarily good.
800 Aldarion and Erendis meet. She is impressed. Also, she enters the Queen's household. She's 29 [biologically 22].
806 Aldarion and Erendis meet (when he says farewell to his mother) they start getting feelings for one another. She's 35 [23]. He's 106 [37].
806 Aldarion sails to ME again, Tar-Meneldur is upset about it.
813 Aldarion returns to Númenor, Tar-Meneldur is upset again. The queen begins to actively arrange for again and Erendis to meet often. (She's Vëantur's daughter, no wonder she likes shipping...)
820 the ship Palarran built, Aldarion sails to ME, Erendis brings him a bough and he falls in love with her. She's 49 [26], he's 120 [40].
823 he returns quickly, with gifts
824 early in the year he sails again, with 7 ships, despite his father's order not to
829 he returns with 9 ships
829 he leaves again with 3 ships
839 Erendis leaves Armenelos, believing that he's dead
843 Aldarion returns and reconciles with his father, but is still too immature to go and propose to Erendis
845 they meet in a forest and he proposes, she's reluctant even though she's very much at the marriage age, tbh she must be past the typical non-line-of-Elros marriage age already.
849 feats for 100 years of the Guild, Erendis is upset about this. Also, Valandil (aged 237, which biologically is 64) is there and fails at smalltalk.
852 Hallacar is born (TG). His father was Hallatan of Hyarastorni (the guy who will later be regent at some point!) from the line of Elros, Aldarion's distant cousin (their common ancestor is Vardamir, says TG)
853 Aldarion and Erendis travel to Emerië, she says that she'll be old when he's the king, they get more distant again
858 through the machinations of their mothers, they reconcile and go to the Holy Mountain together and get bethroted (that's so sweet btw), Tar-Meneldur is very happy. She's 87 [34], he's 158 [48]
861 everyone expects then to get married, Aldarion longs for the sea, Tar-Meneldur had a talk with him, it doesn't go well
862 Aldarion sails to ME, promising to return in the same year
869 he returns (btw people in ME don't like Númenorians that much now)
870 they get married in the spring. There are Elves present at the wedding. She's 99 [36], he's 170 [53] ok TBH he would be younger biologically because he's from the line of Elros.
873 Ancalimë is born in the spring, this is her birth name. Also, she's the most beautiful in the line except later Tar-Miriel.
883 Tar-Aldarion becomes the king
885 Valandil has a grandchild (future 3rd lord of Andunie)
874 Aldarion plants forests, becomes widely known as Aldarion.
877 Aldarion sails again, saying it'll be two years. Erendis moves to Emerie.
879 Erendis is very upset, orders the house in Armenelos to be shut
882 Aldarion returns, drama ensues, also deep theological discussions with his father. Also, Zamîn, my favorite old woman, is already old, so at the very least 200 (biologically 55)
883 Tar-Aldarion becomes the King
883 or 884 he sails again, visits Eregion, meets Galadriel. Hallatan of Hyarastorni is his regent in Númenor.
883-901 Tar-Aldarion is often gone and rarely home, Ancalimë likes spending time with her grandmother Almarian. Later Tar-Aldarion still sails quite often.
892 Ancalimë proclaimed the King's Heiress, which was unprecedented, both because she was 19 and a woman. The law is changed. She often rules as Tar-Aldarion's regent when he's off sailing.
901 Problem cousin has a grandchild
928 Silmarien dies. The women in line of Elros at this time lived over 400 years, judging from the little data that we have, so I'd give her 407.
933 Isilmë dies.
942 Tar-Meneldur dies.
985 Erendis dies in old age (314 years, biologically 79), lonely, in the water of Rómena (definitely not self-inflicted, probably a combination of old age + maybe Uinen heard what Erendis was saying about her. Or maybe she just knew her time was coming and went to die in the sea to spite it)
1000 Ancalimë marries Hallacar, the marriage is unhappy
1001 my favorite character, Zamîn dies (let her see the wedding, but not more of another disaster marriage!). She'd be 318, biologically 80 in this timeline, so that's definitely achievable. She might even have lived longer, on either end.
1011 Valandil has a great-grandchild (let's give him that!)
1012 Valandil dies
1013 problem cousin dies
1019 problem cousin's great-grandchild born
1075 Tar-Ancalimë becomes the Ruling Queen
1098 Tar-Aldarion dies, Tar-Ancalimë neglects all his policies.

so the man whom Johannes Lydus- ibn spiritualiter Agapii (pagani sciti) ibn Procli (paganissimi scitissimi et Papæ Minervæ), and notable for his exhaustive work on the pagan festivals of the Roman calendar- praises as most pious & says was appointed to arrange the Hagia Sophia to be built in 532, Phocas the Prefect, was also the man who was arrested on charges of paganism in 529, and later died as an antique Roman or a Socrates in 546 after being named as a pagan again in another purge.
now the two architects whom Phocas appointed, or at least supervised, to build said temple were Anthemius and Isidorus. Anthemius was a man who called Pythagoras divinissimus and was a close friend of Eutocius ibn Ammonii (pagani sciti et Papæ Isidos) ibn Procli (vide super). Isidorus was also a colleague of said Eutocius.
okay.

I've dedicated a slot to Mehmed and O.M.G. this man.... It's a super intense path. I'm glad that current Mehmed is much more mature than Ottoman Mehmed. But I neeeeeed to talk to people about theories!!!! I really miss the theory posts on Reddit.... There are clues everywhere that I am missing because I don't have so much literary background. Remember how Mehmed's room had a peacock in it and our experts pointed out he must have been revived, because peacocks and phoenixes have the same meaning?? That's what I miss.
What happened in 532? The church that was under the hagia Sophia was destroyed, afaik, and they built that instead, by Justinius. These are all clues. Only the cats can reach the hidden rooms of the old church?
We also have the prophecies to the ancestor to the sultan dynasty. And what is Vlad bait for? 🙃 Sorry this is rambly but maybe I'll make a better post later

Squideo’s Favourites: WALL·E 🌱
Released in 2008 as Pixar Animation Studio’s ninth feature film, its third since the company was purchased by the Walt Disney Company in 2006, WALL·E had been in the works since the nineties. Created by Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter, this fast classic has become one of Pixar’s standout films. So much so that Disney pushed for an Academy Award Best Picture nomination.
Controversially, this wasn’t accepted by the judges but WALL·E did go on to win their Best Animated Feature prize, and also scooped it up at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Hugo Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Saturn Awards, and many more. It even scored two Grammys for Randy Newman and Peter Gabriel’s music performances.
We’re diving into the production behind this animated film, exploring the style and techniques which came together to create this compelling story.
Creating a Story
When Andrew Stanton first came up with the idea for WALL·E, the premise was simple: “what if mankind left Earth and somebody forgot to turn the last robot off?” This was first pitched in 1994 when the young company was thinking about its future films, yet WALL·E wouldn’t start production until 2003 – eventually making it onto screens in 2008.
Stanton continued to develop the idea of a Robinson Crusoe robot with Pete Docter in the nineties, even as both went on to direct other Pixar projects – Finding Nemo (2003) and Monsters, Inc (2001) respectively. There was doubt, however, that this film could be pulled off. Pixar had created anthropomorphised robots before in its first animated short Luxo Jr. (1986). The lamp depicted in this short would become Pixar’s mascot, but was a feature film about a robot something that could be compellingly animated?
What helped to move WALL·E into production was the release of the massively successful Finding Nemo. Like robots, fish weren’t expressive. Like outer space, water was difficult to animate. And yet they pulled it off, releasing what became the highest-grossing animated feature film of all time up to that point and Pixar’s first Academy Award winner. Directed by Stanton, he now had the attention of the company who were eager to hear his next idea.
“WALL-E was a very conscious dive into risk. I knew nobody really wanted to make it. But I also knew nobody could say no to me because Nemo was just so big… we’d been so successful at that point that we could afford the hiccup. If we called it wrong economically or critically, we’d survive it.” Andrew Stanton
The film centred on two robots who only spoke when communicating their names and directives. The majority of WALL·E’s first half is largely free of dialogue, with the exception of live-action recordings from Hello, Dolly! (1969) and Buy n Large’s owner. Many robot characters only converse with chirps and beeps, and the only robot with full lines of dialogue is 2001: A Space Odyssey-inspired villain Auto.
youtube
Key to getting WALL·E into production was the approval of Steve Jobs, who was Pixar’s primary investor and acted as their co-founder and chairman. Jobs split his time at Pixar with Apple where, in 2004, an exciting new product was announced to a select number of people: the development of the first iPhone. The developments at Apple ended up having a profound impact on WALL·E, with the team at Pixar receiving prototype phones before the general public. The film was punctuated throughout with Apple references, using the sound of the Mac boot-up chime when WALL·E finishes charging, and the iPod and iPhone inspiring EVE’s design.
The story is built on themes of environmentalism and global catastrophe, examining consumerism and complacency. One of Pixar and Disney’s most politically themed films, WALL·E attracted conservative criticism but that didn’t stop it from performing at the box office: grossing $532 million worldwide. Receiving widespread acclaim, WALL·E became the second Pixar feature film to be preserved by the National Film Registry and Library of Congress in 2021. In 2022, WALL·E also became Pixar’s first film selected by The Criterion Collection.
Animation Style
While other Pixar films typically generated between 50 and 75,000 storyboards for each production, WALL·E ended up with over 125,000 drawings and 96,000 storyboards. A lot of thought had to go into the character’s design, since their emotions would have to be conveyed physically rather than verbally.
“Robots are a huge challenge, because robots are function-based machines. When you’re drawing them, you can only make up so much stuff that doesn’t actually function, or the person looking at them, even if they’re not engineers themselves, they’re going to notice that that joint wouldn’t actually work. So it became important to look at actual robots. You can only make so much up out of your head.” Jason Dreamer
The team looked at a variety of robots, including those made for bomb disposal. For Jim Reardon, head of story for WALL•E, it was important that they didn’t “draw human-looking robots with arms, legs, heads and eyes, and have them talk. We wanted to take objects that you normally wouldn’t associate with having humanlike characteristics and see what we could get out of them through design and animation.”
To help, Stanton arranged film screenings of classic silent films from the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton to show how silent film actors told stories without reliance on dialogue.
To create the wasteland that WALL·E is left behind in, the animators looked at everything from local dumps to the abandoned city of Chernobyl. For the modern ship Axiom, they looked to Disneyland’s Tomorrowland and cruise ships. To design the human characters, they consulted with physiologist James Hicks to find out the effects of atrophy and prolonged weightlessness while living in space, proving that no detail was too small for the team behind WALL·E.
All of these considerations created a future that seems tangible, and helps to drive the importance of the film’s themes. WALL·E ends on an optimistic note, with Jim Capobianco’s end credits which show the evolution of humanity through different schools of art. For audiences facing the realities of climate change and environmental destruction, this confidence in the power of humanity to fix our world is the right ending. Perhaps explaining why it is one of the few Pixar films to receive no sequel or animated shorts. The story is perfect as it is.

Ancient temple undergoes renovations to prevent earthquake damage

Many travelers to Istanbul, Turkey, may find themselves at one of the most beautiful sacred places in the world: the Hagia Sophia. The ancient temple attracts scores of visitors from the West. It's known for its history as a Christian basilica for almost 1,000 years before becoming a mosque during the Ottoman Empire.Officials are now working to preserve the historic domes of the monument — built between 532 and 537 AD — from the threat of earthquakes.POPULAR CHURCH WILL CURB TOURIST CROWDS BY CREATING SEPARATE 'SELFIE SPACE'The renovation will reinforce the Hagia Sophia’s main dome and half domes, replacing the worn lead coverings and upgrading the steel framework, The Associated Press (AP) reported. In 1935, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the modern Republic of Turkey, transformed Hagia Sophia into a museum.Mehmet Selim Okten, construction engineer and member of the scientific council overseeing the renovations, told AP a "new phase" of construction is about to begin.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER"At the end of these three years, we have focused on the seismic safety of Hagia Sophia, the minarets, the main dome and the main arches, especially due to the expected Istanbul earthquake," said Okten. The renovation comes after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey in 2023, destroying hundreds of buildings.
