RAY: Look. Benny. If you want some help, you're going to have to register a dispute. FRASER: You sure? RAY: Yes, well, that's what they do here. They handle disputes.
Tumblr media
FRASER: I won't be making a fuss?
Tumblr media
RAY: Well, of course you will. That's the whole point. FRASER: Ahh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
FRASER: I don't have to raise my voice, do I?
Tumblr media
VECCHIO: Look, there's no polite way to dispute. You just jump right in there. FRASER: I see. VECCHIO: Okay. FRASER: Okay. VECCHIO: Let's go. [They head back to the desk.] FRASER: [clears his throat] I demand — Well, no, I don't.
Tumblr media
FRASER: I, I respectfully request, um — well, no, actually-
Tumblr media
FRASER: just speaking strictly for myself, I... Ray— (help me) RAY: We have a slumlord who's trying to illegally evict a whole building full of poor people.

Reaction post to this one because it's been driving me crazy the entire day 😅
I see a totally different thing.
Ray and Fraser are so perfectly in sync that Fraser doesn't even have to chew it all out for Ray because Ray understands Fraser on a much deeper level. Their partnership goes beyond words.
Ray knows Fraser is shaken up (he tells Welsh and Welsh trusts that Ray knows what's going on with Fraser) and that he's working on things on a deeper layer than this case.
Ray hasn't even met Victoria but he knows Scarpa is not to be trusted. She's manipulative and she's playing games with Fraser. He just doesn't know that Fraser sees through it. Even though Fraser keeps telling him.
But Fraser also knows he has this one chance to finally show himself that he is not going to fall for something like this again. Maybe even that he can open up and love.
That he is capable of doing this and not losing himself in the process again. He's learning to bluff.
And he has to do this part alone. Because the other time, it was taken from him by a bullet in the back.
So let me present you the way I see it. Fraser completely trusting Ray to have his back.
Ray being an absolute hero. There was never any doubt in Fraser's mind that Ray would get it, get him.

1x02 Diefenbaker’s Day Off | Discreet
Something I missed countless times watching this episode is now one of my favourite little pieces of early character-building in season one!
Fraser rolls his eyes at the way Ray rudely pours his coffee out in front of Hugo the Coffee Guy. Hugo, of course, delivers Fraser chamomile tea, special. He nurses it for most of the scene.
And then as soon as Hugo is out of sight, Fraser dumps the tea in the garbage too.
They really let Benny be so human in these early episodes and I love it. He’s not a robot; he also hates the tea! He just spares Hugo’s feelings about it. It’s so Fraser; only a little bitchy and more human when no one is around to see. And unerringly kind.
Him!!!!!!!!!! Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well if I've discovered anything from watching Due South so far it's that Benton Fraser would be the most interesting character to put through a time-loop story line.

Ray really chose wrapping himself in horsemeat instead of hugging Fraser.

The line "I know I can love you much better..." playing while Fraser gazes down at Ray in his hospital bed makes me want to spontaneously combust.

i think a lot about how ray looks out for fraser and does a bunch of caretaking and protecting in s1 especially as fraser is such an oddity to most people around him in a way that, yeah, inspires some kindness, but also a whole lot of hostility, and also habitually gets into situations that could get him killed (and sometimes definitely would have if not for ray)
but fraser also appears to be ray's.... only friend? as of beginning s1? he invites hewey and louis and welsh along for a night in victoria's secret but that's wahaaay down the line and tbh i get the feeling that he was almost on his last leg when we met him in the pilot episode and gained a lot of goodwill after fraser came into the picture and they started solving cases that nobody even knew needed to be solved. and then there's presumably the occasional date + some past longterm, but ultimately failed, romantic relationships. and of course his family, who seem lovely and tight-knit if loud and argumentative in the way families often are (mrs vecchio i would kill for you), but they're all off doing their own things really
so there's "ray invites fraser out and suggests things to do with fraser because he likes spending time with fraser and it's good for fraser," but also like. how long was he on his own on the daily before fraser got there? who was he getting takeaway pizza with? taking out to chinese restaurants? going christmas shopping with? having casual breakfasts in cafés with? he clearly seems so thrilled to be doing all these things with fraser, really get the feeling he was quite lonely before his arrival
described ray as a mangy cat who gets one of those dogs they give to cheetahs to calm them down, like he starts out kind of crooked and angry at the world and without much of any hope for humanity, including himself (which, once we learn some Backstory makes perfect sense) and almost immediately upon meeting fraser he takes him to meet his family??? truly get the feeling fraser arrived like some kind of sip of magical restorative water and ray's just gulping it down

I love this so much!!!
It made me laugh and go yes so many times. Both because as two people who weren’t in the fandom or watched the show ( you should, I think it maybe to your tastes from other episodes I’ve heard!  I would so pay for a watch along recap) the amount of info you got lovingly mixed up on was funny as hell. But the outsider perspective is so refreshingly honest and needed to say wtf is due south lol.
I think in that way you are on point nailing broader history trends of the fannish times and due south’s place in, and omg the religious wars, only my second time hearing of that crazyiness, and just why due south keeps cycling in fannish history. Of why fandom splintered, like the production did.
Bravo episode!!!
Helloooo, Chicago! This very special bonus episode was recorded LIVE at FanExpo Chicago '23 on the Creator Stage, and we're so excited to get to share it with you all! To celebrate and thank FXC for inviting us to perform, we decided to honor the Windy City and give a brief overview of a few fannish events in a fandom that owes it all to the Chi: due South. The heartwarming tale of a Canadian Mountie, a deaf wolfdog, some ghosts, and two gentlemen named Ray, due South is one of the hardiest fandoms of the '90s and boy, howdy, was its drama nutty, eh? From the Religious War of '96 to the still-ongoing Ray Wars, due South fans have seen, said, and done it all. And we salute them here, at the first episode we've gotten to record in the same room. Enjoy! (The normal episode for this week is coming soon! COVID is delaying its release, boo.)
This Week In Fandom History is a fandom-centric podcast that tells you… what happened this week in fandom history!

having thoughts on COTW again and how it's perfectly bookending both the Pilot episode and also Burning Down the House.
Benton Fraser returns to Canada on the trail of his mother's killers and for reasons that have been heavily implied and shown within the show remains there for good.
But also in COTW he gets a chance at saying goodbye on his own terms, as bittersweet as it is. In Burning Down the House everything was taken from him in drastic ways - his home and the community he build in Chicago, his best friend, his best friend's home - but in return the universe throws Ray Kowalski in his way.
In COTW Fraser quietly dismantles his ties to Chicago. He gets to say goodbye to the all the living people he loves and he gets a chance to say goodbye to his parents - and in some ways I feel his last salute to Frobisher also has him saying goodbye to the RCMP.
The people in his life know that's what he is doing even if it's not explicitly voiced, but also despite saying goodbye he gets to keep these friendships, these connections, even if they're hundreds of miles apart. Because everyone from Ray Vecchio to Meg Thatcher and Francesca and heck even Turnbull, left an impression on his life.
But then there is Ray Kowalski, you know the person the universe threw his way when everything in his life was falling apart? Anyway, that's who Fraser keeps, that's one where he says "You know what I am tired of goodbye's so I am going to whisk Stanley Raymond Kowalski and myself away on a real adventure."
And we, as the audience, are not allowed to see what happens to them. We've seen all of Fraser's adventures in Chicago but we do not get to know what happens to him and RayK in Canada. And idk, that's beautiful.

Due South Fraser/RayK Soulmate AU
Okay, hear me out.
Soulmate AU verse of the 'First Sight' variety: First time you see your soulmate, you KNOW.
So Burning down the House episode continues as normal, Fraser's back in Chicago, he's giving gifts to people as he tries to find his best friend Ray Vecchio. He finally sees him at his desk but the man turns around and it is NOT Ray Vecchio...
But he is the most beautiful person he's ever seen and oh, why does his chest feel funny and oh...
OH...
That's his soulmate. He found his soulmate...
And here lies the problem: See, everyone KNOWS Ray Vecchio is not Benton Fraser's soulmate... but the guy going undercover as Ray Vecchio is... and to keep that undercover job going then Fraser and this new Ray can't be soulmates either - or at least not yet.
By some fate, they've found their soulmates and they can't act on it - can't so much as kiss or celebrate it or even acknowledge it while still having to work closely together.
All to keep Ray Vecchio safe.
And they're trying so damn hard to wait it out but it's something (at least Ray, maybe?) has wanted for such a long time and the urge to get closer is almost too painful to ignore.
And like... there's got to be a breaking point eventually, right?
Look, I'm probably not going to write this as I have far too many things to work one as is but I'm hoping this catches someone's attention and tickles that little writing urge.
