morning everyone!! with next week being prioritised by this blog, i thought it would be good to mention i'm definitely considering completing my rules overhaul. i have my other blogs theme to finish but after that i will be updating this blogs theme and what i can advise to expect.

Ok but, regarding TMAGP 27, I can't stop thinking about Jonah writing, after sending Archibald to a certain death, "It is done, and I am surprised to find how little remorse I feel." It reminds me of his statement in MAG 160:

"The discovery, not simply of the dark and horrible reality of the world in which you live, but that you would quite willingly doom that world and confine the billions in it to an eternity of terror and suffering, all to ensure your own happiness, to place yourself beyond pain and death and fear. (...) It is an awful thing to know about yourself."

I will never get tired of little details about his life being revealed (regardless of the timeline/dimension) because the parallel between his discovery of the supernatural world and the discovery of his own true self and the things he's capable of is so interesting and compelling to me.

Along with the knowledge of the horrors that exist in his world comes the horror of the realization that he might be capable of anything to stop feeling scared and vulnerable, to put himself over everybody else if necessary. Every time curiosity leads him into a new experiment, a new sacrifice in the name of knowledge, he lets go a little bit of himself and his morality. And then, as it happened with Archibald, and as it happened with Barnabas in another world, he feels surprised of how easy it was. Of how he doesn't feel regret or grief, how at most he finds himself thinking that it was all a pity. So it becomes even easier each time, he finds freedom in it, as he also mentions in MAG 160— and one sacrifice after another, it all becomes incredibly simple. There is no fear of losing himself, only the fear of death and pain remains, and only after that process of two hundreds years can one condemn the world for his own sake.

The progressive descent into evil of Jonah Magnus, slowly exposed through statements and letters, will never stop being one of the more interesting parts of this podcast imo.

heres MY rambly black sails analysis for the day, after watching the show twice in as many months i wholeheartedly believe in the "long john silvers quote unquote missus in treasure island is max, not madi" theory

the most obvious thing, as others have pointed out, is that in treasure island long john silver runs an inn with his wife, a black woman, in bristol, which is absolutely not madi behavior-- i cannot imagine madi would take him back in the first place much less move with him TO ENGLAND-- but IS maxs exact area of expertise. but theres so many other things that cement it for me

as early as episode 2, max tries to convince eleanor to buy out the inn and run it together with her when england takes nassau back. this is her dream-- to share power over her life with a woman she loves, free of the pressures of the outside world. (youll note this also happens to be silvers dream for himself and madi. the parallels)

in season 4 shes faced with the suspiciously similar option to take a husband to be the face of her business, completely on paper, for the sake of the public eye. and she refuses! she doesnt want to give a man that kind of power over her. not only that but she desperately wants to retain some kind of truth in her identity-- she admires anne for her honesty, her courage. these are things she can rarely afford to express. in refusing a marriage of convenience, she asserts her autonomy.

But. black sails tells us over and over again that an oppressive society will always find ways to batter down these private boundaries. there is no island safe from colonial rule. mirandas peaceful house in the interior is burnt to the ground. the maroons are forced to accept a freedom that comes at the price of abandoning those still enslaved and taking part in their continued subjugation. the things it takes to make these spaces are terrible, and unsustainable, and when it comes to being gay in the 1700s there is a tightrope to walk between privilege and privacy, one that destroyed flint and the hamiltons, thats even narrower to max as a self-made woman of color.

given all that, i do not believe she can girlboss her way out of her circumstances no matter how many lessons she took from what happened to eleanor. nor do i think the show believes it. i think the political-marriage-offer plot point is another illustration of that theme-- maxs desire, and silvers desire, to build a warm, happy room in the middle of the imperial machine, without meaningfully striking out against the machine itself, is destined to be futile no matter how strong they are as individuals.

max and silver are mirror images of one another. each of them is essentially the narrator of one half of the story. it is absolutely agonizing how BOTH of them tried to convince their lovers to abandon their ambitions, to settle for a quiet life with them, and in doing so saw that relationship destroyed by their own fear of an uncertain future....

....And its even MORE agonizing to imagine them finally securing the trappings of a domestic life... but without the love. and they know the love was what mattered! theyre always going to know!!!

it bookends PERFECTLY with their alliance at the start of the series. theyre right where they started, trusting no one, pretending to be humble and harmless, planning to steal the EXACT SAME TREASURE, except now theyre 50 years old and jaded and bitter and both pining after their lost loves. silver probably pictures madi whenever he tells people about his wife. when he and max have time to themselves they talk solely about finances and nothing else. its honestly impressive how miserable this is for every single person involved. im losing my mind

i've been wondering if maybe we're going about thinking about this scene/whose playing the different roles in it wrong.

we know the titles, aka the butcher, the shaman, the hunter, and theres been (as far as i've seen) a general assumption that these roles must belong to the people we know to have held them so far but imo its going to be the opposite. a huge theme of the show is ill-fitting substitutes. specifically substitution as a way to cope with guilt and grief. such as shauna using melissa and jeff as substitutes for jackie. i mean her search for a cat that looks almost identical but just isnt the same cat ? and shaunas inability to see why that isnt okay. why it isnt good enough. it wasnt just a joke, it was a summation of the unhealthy way shauna copes with loss.

and like everything in this show, the whole storys contained within the pilot and within the rules and politics of soccer. when a player is subbed into a game from the sidelines they are never going to be exactly the same as the player who left the field. they might be similar, but they will have their own ways of playing; where they like the ball placed for them, the runs they like to make, whether they like to get in close and turn the opposition. and just as a harsh truth, the more subs you make, getting further and further away from your original starting team, the less sure you can be of the chemistry and relationships between the players. the more unstable your team becomes. not to mention, as you make those subs, the players on the field can be forced into their secondary or tertiary positions. a defender can end up pushed right to the front, forced to act as the striker. playing out of position because theres no one else. when a varsity player dies in the teen timeline, like jackie and laura lee, they are essentially subbed off. on comes melissa and travis to play their roles, except they cant, they dont fit quite the same. they cant be to the team, to shauna and lottie, what jackie and laura lee were. the connections start to wear thin, no one quite trusting or understanding their own role or that of the player stood next to them.

i believe the group in this image is the result of a bunch of ill-fitting substitutions, no one quite playing the role that fits them best. perhaps taissa, who couldnt stomach shooting ben, as the hunter. travis, whose own brother was butchered, as the butcher. shauna, who doesnt even believe in the wilderness, as the shaman. i think its not meant to feel right. the roles arent meant to fit them at all, thats the point.

I’ll write for about anyone from Twilight, though I’m more comfortable with the main cast since theres more about them in the source material! I’m open to requests, though I’m getting through them rathwr slowly due to school.

I divert from cannon to make my story a bit better (esp regarding the Native American characters in Twilight). I do try to focus more on them as characters in the story so I don’t misconstrue the culture from which they were sourced, though.

Starting my Xmen redesign with Wolverine and sabertooth! I wanted to emphasize both of their feral natures and give them more animal traits, so! Let's go!

Wolverine:

-his ears are naturally pointy and able to move in different directions to locate sound (kinda like dog ears) so in this version he has them uncovered by the helmet to be able to reach and locate different sounds with more efficiency

-as you all know my Logan is ftm, so he has a built in binder in his suit and the stripes on his chest are supposed to resemble top surgery scars, Logan is very proud of his identity as a trans man ok?? And we stan King Logan here!

-the back of his suit is lined with a thick layer of black colored faux fur for better camouflage, I headcanon that Logan uses camouflage to his advantage, and his attacks are usually animalistic in nature, a.k.a attacking low to the ground, pouncing on someone, aiming at the neck for a bite, scratching legs to make his enemies fall down etc etc, his stance is always low, ready to skip, dodge and strike when it's unexpected, jumping into action at just the right moment

-theres also faux fur lining on his "boots" that aren't really boots and are more like ankle covers lol, since my Logan has paw pads he feels more comfortable without heavy af boots restricting his movements, which tend to be quick and brutal In nature, so he has his paws out for better grip on the ground and easier mobility when fighting, besides the faux fur added to his "boots" and back add to his feral/animalistic hero persona, a downside to that is that after missions he tends to drag mud or dirt into the mansion or the blackbird so a "Logan please wipe your paws" rule has been implement by Cyclops lmao

Sabertooth:

-I wanted him to resemble different felines in general, so I gave him linx like ears, some cheek fluff (which idk why reminds me of male teen lions that are starting to grow out their manes and look all scruffy lol) a lion looking tail + the mane in the back of his suit adds to the lion theme as well and just like the tiger stripes in his suit, are a classic design element that I had to keep because it's just too Iconic

-I gave him protruding fangs that peek out from the bottom of his lips, like an underbite. I originally wanted him to have actual sabertooth teeth but he looked too silly, so underbite it is

- the brown parts of his suit are actually soft and fluffy, made of a soft, short, fur like material/fabric

-the tip of his boots resemble paws, and just like his gloves, they're lined with fax fur

thinking about pink squad being the resident party throwers in ever after and all the shenanigans they get up to when planning

in the books, briar had the position of social throne on the student council (or something similar cant remember) so i just know that she has 100% memorized all the forms and steps on procedures on throwing events at eah.

apple wishes she has the same mastery as briar in paperwork. the girl can do budget proposals, logistical planning, role assigning, and etc in her sleep and thats not exaggerating.

(true hearts day being held in secret was an exception since grimm shot the event down as cupid suggested it. all their other events are approved by the school and grimm himself is going crazy trying to find a reason to reject their request but cant find a flaw in briar's event proposals.)

cupid is 'their guy' if they need anything. no matter how weird, how rare, how obscure, cupid knows how to get it. she just knows where to get it or knows someone who can get it for her ;)

girlie always has a delivery incoming to the point that blondie knows how to fake cupids signature so she could shoo away all the delivery birds that come to their dorm room because they need cupids signature before they could drop off their package.

hopper's their distraction guy. while he's not as charismatic in his human form, he's got a silver tongue in his frog form.

it isnt only just grimm who falls for hoppers made up play, but every teacher and professor falls for it too because he's just that good. made up plays, clubs, assemblies. he knows how to lie well enough that any school offical believe the lies coming out of his mouth.

(i know theyre teens still, but you cannot convince me that no one is drinking at any of these parties. theres no pressure to drink at all but the option's there if you wanna get loose and have a lil buzz. they're eventually going to drink alcohol in the future in balls and dances and such, so why not learn about their personal tastes and tolerance in alcohol now?)

the biggest hurdle in the pink squad's goal of getting happily ever wasted is, unfortunately, apple.

apple is a rule follower to her very essence and while she does go to the parties, she is against underage drinking. (but she's drunk on power all the time, okay jan.)

they figured out that the solution is just to always have a bowl of apple juice out in every party so that apple wouldnt know there's alcohol being served. they noticed that unless there wasnt any apple juice out, apple wouldnt try out any other drink. so with a bowl charmed to never run out of a.j., the students of ever after are free to drink as they please.

(i love the hc that ginger is also part of the pink squad, so im gonna give my hc of her in party planning as well)

ginger is their food and snacks girl. she makes the best food ever perfectly themed to the party that theyre throwing. from heart cakes on true hearts day, light finger food for the rager parties, to five course meals on their more classy events, ginger's got them covered. sometimes, she gets too conscious about what other people think of the food that she forgets to enjoy herself, but the pink squad drag her out of her funk and get her to have fun anyways

melody - the best dj in ever after! she uses these events sometime to test the reception to some of her upcoming songs before she releases them

daring - being blackmailed by cupid to act as a medic in case someone gets hurt. (this is also partly based on my cupid and daring friendship fic hjdjskr). he's the best in rescuing damsels, whats a drunk teen of not a damsel? (he's actually really good at giving first aid tho)

darling - security! they do have bouncers and such, but if anyones getting too rough at a party, they can get darling and a look from her gets the troublemaker running in fear or apologizing profusely

blondie - apart from committing forgery in cupid's name, she also gets the word out on her mirror blog when they have an event happening soon!

you know how there was a running theme with the NPC encounters in hades? that sisyphus, eurydice, and patroclus were all involved in stories about being unable to escape death?

and its something thats explicitly discussed within hades itself, at least for sisyphus and eurydice. sisyphus had attempted to cheat death three times, one of the most notable being when he bound thanatos in chains. orpheus had found a way to bring eurydice back to life, but couldn't follow through with completing hades' challenge. achilles had a prophecy hanging over him during the war; die in glory at troy or live long unremembered. he chose the war and patroclus followed. they didn't survive. they are all different manifestations of the axiom zagreus is fighting against: that in hades, there is no escape.

so i was thinking. in the hades 2 playtest, we get dialogue from nemesis about how mortals had it better during kronos' time. we get dialogue from arachne too, about being distrustful toward the gods because of her curse.

i wonder if the running theme for the npcs in hades 2 will be people maligned by the gods in some shape or form.

arachne is already confirmed as the npc encounter for erebus. proud athena cursed her into being a spider. will we see victims of a love gone wrong in the next biome, like daphne perhaps? will we see those offered up for sacrifice just to appease the gods, such as andromeda or iphigenia? maybe those who were killed, perhaps unjustly so, because they dared fly too close to the heavens, like bellerophon or icarus? demigods that were cursed because of their birth, ala heracles? its long been a joke that the greek myths are just full of people suffering because of the incomprehensible acts of the gods. if hades 2 goes down this route, theres a lot of material to draw inspiration from.

and its an especially interesting direction because we know that its kronos waiting for us down the line. kronos, who ruled the golden age. when it comes to those wronged by the gods, you cant get much worse than being waged war against, your mountain stronghold so damaged from the attack that it loses height, and then being cut up into tiny pieces.

kronos, the crooked one. i bet he'd have a hell of a time trying to convince melinoe that the gods cant be trusted. and melinoe would be surrounded by all these narratives that would just prove his point.

just like how zagreus was in hades, who was surrounded by all these narratives about how death had no escape. and yet, his story is about how life and love bloom despite it. i cant wait to see what melinoe is fighting against now.

special helmets of the 2024 and 2025 motogp seasons. this is a bit of a reference list for just the ones i personallyyyy care about tbh like full disclosure. deeply non exhaustive im a pink pony girl on the stage in my heels etc BUT i do think the profiles of their artistic choices say a lot about these guys! art always reveals !!! anyways:

marc: this diva LOVES a costume change and im always curious for why he does it for some tracks and not others (he didnt do sachsenring last year?)... anyways he DID do a special lid for catalunya, thailand, usa, japan, and silverstone/misano last year as well as cota again so far this year. he reused his 2023 designs at the catalan and thai gps in 2024 AND gresini reused their special silverstone livery again at misano, so he wore the helmet then as well. i would say reduce reuse recycle but i think its more of a mulligan situation. all this to day he kind of does a lot of special helmets and he does them for his important tracks, not just his home tracks-- which no one else on the grid really does all that much. the willingness to reuse and the track selection tells me its him doing a career tribute kinda thing that he thinks is important, AND he likes looking hot/cool as well. like we all know like marc really cares about aesthetics and the places/people that have taken care of him and i think the helmets lowkey reflect that. to compare alex doesnt do this shit like at all and if he does its relatively sedate (which hes on record saying that he doesnt like attention on himself so). anyways its all very marc lmao

bez: less location/cultural visual arts based and more his feelings and lotsa song lyrics/pop culture references which is no surprise... also does a few of them outside of italy which means he's in it for the love of the game. helmets include god save the bez (silverstone), misano (loverboy lid), goodbye to vr46 (catalan gp 2024 #2), the one about being "zen" that i find kinda racist (mugello 2024), one thats just song lyrics HUGE, and im lowkey cheating here but simply the bez (misano 23) and bez barber shop (mugello 23). he likes the JOKES

pecco: does a more normal amount of special helmets and always at his home tracks! hes done a red cloud helmet to pay tribute to his fans, a bootlicking helmet to pay tribute to the italian air force, a tortellini helmet for autism awareness/support, and a kiss/rock n roll helmet bc he had a celebration planned w some friends if he won (he did!). for some reason he photographed a lot of em on like the same couch in his riders room. he also did an ayrton senna tribute glove situation one time but he only used em for the sprint (maybe bc he crashed? idk). all of this is very in line w his personality and like. pecco as performing celebrity/sportsperson The Way It Should Be Done, but that doesnt mean they arent any less heartfelt, yknow

luca: doesnt do em TOO often as far as i can tell but he did do a baby helmetttt when he was expecting his daughter that told the story of his family and it was. super cute and clearly meant a lot to him because he explained everything on the helmet very deliberately and he even drew the little stick figure illustrations personally. luca voice why do it if you dont do it completely !!!

franky: he doesnt do them incredibly often either but they DO rule and theyre usually p pointed, he also seems to like nature themes that tie into brazil generally, looking at his regular season helmets. recently theres the peacock from mugello last year, which he said he used partly bc it is a common animal in romagna ! and then for the others-- they arent in the last two seasons but i would be remiss not to include the spike lee helmet he wore in 2020 after the murder of george floyd. genuinely the bravest thing a rider has done in the motogp paddock full stop AND the helmet is gorgeous to boot. he also loves to incorporate stuff from his brazilian roots so theres another yamaha era special helmet with a lot of parrot feathers on it/a portuguese phrase on the back and after russia invaded ukraine he slapped a give peace a chance sticker on the forehead of his helmet as well. he loves nature, he loves his heritage, and hes got things to SAY

diggia and aleix: BOTH did chrome dome helmets last year that are probably my faves on this whole list. swaggy as hell look even swaggier in motion. they both did them for their home gps and i love watching them just GLEAM. no psychoanalysis for these pls just look at em

fabio: a man caught between nationalism and that sweet advertising money. he does a special helmet AND a full special livery every year for le mans, but hes also rent out his noggin space to upcoming blockbuster movies so he'll be riding around looking like venom. like toothless. idk hes funny and i think it says a lot that he goes WAY harder than anyone for his home gp and then also kind of doesnt care to do anything else. except when he (i think) earnestly enjoys the goofy ass venom helmet thats paying him a huge stack of cash

Hi!! unlike a lot of the asks youve gotten lately, i dont have any advice or answers for anyone, but i do have a few questions for you!

im not worried about titles or how id be treated in the SCA as a trans person given the demographics of my area, but i AM kind of worried about things like clothing. i know there are some somewhat neutral options but having to be historically accurate kinda kills my usual method of blending historical clothing into androgyny, do you think theres any leway for things like that or would it be up to my local group entirely what theyd allow?

i was also wondering if the SCA is always so focused on such a specific geographic history (everything ive seen is either very english or somewhat scandinavian), or again is it up to the individual as long as its time period accurate? i think my local group would be the canton of seashire/barony of ruantallan so im sure theres at least a few people whod want to deviate, i just want to join a group like the SCA but i dont have much love for the english....

i also have a disability that makes it hard to travel and do stuff like pitch tents, i sometimes have to skip events. is that something id be able to compensate the group for in other ways if i need a little extra understanding sometimes? i dont feel right asking for help and not paying it back when its my own fault.

thanks for always helping us when we want to know things, ive wanted to join a group like this for so long but the SCA seems so strict that a two hour drive for someone who cant drive wasnt worth it, but now im moving and this new group gathers down the road from where im moving to so i figure maybe id try looking into it again! I have great news for you. :) The only requirement for garb in the SCA is that you make SOME attempt at pre-16th century clothing. That's it. That's the rule. Some people interpret this for themselves as being as strictly as historically accurate as they can, while others interpret it as doing what they can with the resources they have. It all depends on how you want to play your game. The other good news it that, just like today, people then played with fashion to fit their specific needs. So if you want to adjust your garb to something that is more comfortable for you, then by all means - do it!

When it comes to fashion among the populace, there are definitely trends that happen. But, like I mentioned before, there's also necessity in fashion. There was a little ice age happening from approximately 1300-1800, and so fashions tended to be layered and well... warm. That doesn't really work in some of our modern climates. In warmer Kingdom's you'll see a lot of Roman or Anglo-Saxon happening in the summer. In the winter, Viking tends to take over. You also find that fashions that are easier to make and wear are usually preferred over ones that are more complicated, expensive, or just unsuitable for the event.

In my Kingdom, there was a trend for a little while for each of the reigns to be themed. We've had a Persian reign, a Landsknecht reign, a Viking reign - and then the populace made garb to coincide with the theme of the reign, which did add some diversity to looks. Right now, I've noticed that Landsknecht is definitely on the rise in our particular area after Viking had a bit of a strangle hold for a while. It still does, really, because it's such an easy fashion to make, and can be comfortable in all climates depending on the material you use (linen for summer, wool for winter).

Everyone has their skills and talents, as well as their limitations. You can absolutely find something to contribute to your group based on your own capabilities. Coordinating the hospitality, offering to watch little ones, heck - even being in charge of making the field space reservations would be ways that you can contribute to the group event experience. If you are a crafter, an artist, a performer, or even filling an officer position or assisting an office with their duties. And if you're none of those things, that's fine, too. Events are more fun just having people there to share the experience with. No one will begrudge you for not doing something you are incapable of doing. If they do, then forget them - I'm your SCA Mom now, and you can come play with me.
