Andor Finale Thoughts

SPOILERS AHEAD YE HAVE BEEN WARNED

That's a hell of send off. I'm glad best girl Kleya survived, I was getting worried she was going to buy the farm after delivering the Emperor's Mercy (pardon the 40k phrase) to Luthen. ISB Tactical Team, we hardly knew ye. They were a cool little introduction that we kinda figured was there but nice to see on screen. I really appreciated two things about them. 1.) that each member looked unique, be it in terms of weapons, headgear, or web gear. 2.) Their armor was dirty. The stormtroopers, at least on Coruscant, were all shiny and clean. The ISB Tac unit though was grimy, showing that they care more about results then looking good while doing it. Honestly, I'd love to watch a show or read a comic, or play a game about them or a unit like them. The whiplash between seeing a KX series droid in horriffic action on Ghorman and then K2 clearing a path was funny. I also really liked seeing some of the wider Yavin base as well. I had honestly thought the temples had been fully converted to bases. I am happy that Vel also seemed to be settling into a logistics/training role within the Alliance. The ending felt bittersweet with Rogue One having been out for almost a decade now. I did like very much though. I'm happy the B2 and Bix found peace. I'm not entirely sure that's was Cassian's kid though since this volume was seemed to go right into Rogue One and I don't think the two had seen each other within a year or so. (I've also liked the pair of Jyn and Cassian more than I Bix and Cassian) The bit with Melshi training the Pathfinders at the end was cool too. It was a nice call back and also a nod that the Alliance is trying to be a more organized and disciplined fighting force.

Part of me is glad that Andor is only two seasons, since that way they got to keep everything nice and tight in terms of story and tone. But also that any more would feel like rubbing salt in the wound that we can't get any more stories with that awesome crew from Rogue One in the rest of the OT era and beyond. I feel even more solidified in my opinion that not everyone should have been killed off. I know there's been some talk about having Gilroy back and in charge, but I'd rather he and his cadre just have a desk in the newsroom. Cause again, I like Andor as a whole very much, but the retconning of Rebels from last weeks volume still doesn't city well with me. What I want to see going forward with Star Wars is the quality of Andor to go forward. Give me the writing and design quality but have the next show be about some plucky Rebel or New Republic pilots having adventures and fighting the bad guys. Or Band of Brothers but in space following a platoon in the 501st, 212th, or 41st during the Clone Wars. Because after the ISB Tac Team, I wanna see their Alliance counterparts, not a unit like Saw's Partizans. Bonus points if said unit is using liberated Imperial Gear or Republic Surplus. I don't begrudge Andor it's success, but if everything tries to chase its success, we really won't get good Star Wars again.

........I still would have preferred a large scale firefight and the Ghost crew coming in to save Cassian and crew.

damn, never thought we'd get here, did we?

in all honesty, it's been a pretty shit year. march 'til now has felt like the same month on repeat with tiny tweaks to make it all so much worse. but i'm not here to complain about the worst parts of this year, i'm here to celebrate the best ones.

this was the year that i finally started writing, that i was finally spurred to open a google doc and just type away until a tiny work of fiction stared back at me. my first one was 1k words, a rant to get all of my emotions off of my chest with an idol as my muse. it felt...great, though it also felt a bit odd writing after being an avid reader for years. i always did prefer essays to creative writing, but this year definitely changed that perspective.

i wrote that first blurb along with another fic in late july, and in early august, i asked my friends if i should post them. om august 3rd, i changed this blog from a fic rec to a fic writing blog just like that. i regret none of it.

it's been nearly five months since i revamped this blog and i couldn't be more grateful for the support i have gotten from all of you, whether it be a kind comment, a like, a reblog, all of it. i never thought anyone would like my content, but i've been proven severely wrong by this community. from my irls that are on here, to my lovely mutuals and followers, to those i've talked to a lil bit on this hellsite, to the writers whose fics i absolutely adore, to those who have left a like or a comment on one of my fics, i want to say thank you from the very bottom of my heart ♡

have a happy and healthy new year! i love and appreciate every single one of you!!

Let The Galaxy Burn readthrough (Part 2)

Another 10 stories have been read through so here are my reviews/rants about them.

11. Business As Usual by Graham McNeill. Who knew that by not making someone write about Space Marine they can actually do something interesting, fancy that. This one was an absolute hoot to read, because from the first paragraph it's pretty much an 80's B-grade sci-fi action/horror movie. Like from the first paragraph you just know you're in for something special.

RIGHT AWAY, SNOWDOG could tell that these six, deadhead Jackboys were trying to pull one over on him. Sure, they talked the talk, walked the walk and apparently had some real heavy connections with the High Hive gangs, but his gut told him that this deal was going to hell.

The dialogue is amazingly corny, and at parts read like something out of a Shadowrun novel.

‘So, you wanna deal?’ repeated the Jackboy. ‘Maybe.’ said Snowdog, nodding imperceptibly to Silver. ‘Don’t be givin’ me no “maybe”. Yes or no, that’s all I wanna hear. I don’t give out nothing for nothing. Understand, boy? You take our Kalma, we want something back.’ ‘Hey, I didn’t say I wasn’t gonna deal.’ soothed Snowdog, ‘let’s all just flat-line and be cool. We’re all here to do a little business, not bag ‘n tag each other.’

The main characters name is Snowdog, he has two his vixen companions/bodyguards named Silver and Tigerlily. And then Snowdog's nemesis is Jakob Gunderson(!!), who is an Arbites before they were really Space Feds. And he wears goddamn shades at seemingly all time, and Snowdog wears tiger striped pants too. It is great. :D

If anything it could have needed a bit of a longer word count, just to extend the second arc a little bit. Because the part when the Tyranids attack, and the reveal of the boss monster is over a bit too quickly. But the descriptions of them are very nasty and the few deaths there are there are aptly gruesome for an 80's monster movie. Frankly this one is begging to be made into a WH+ animation.

12. Salvation by Jonathan Green. First time I've seen the classic amnesia plot been used with Space Marines. Surprisingly nice to see one being as normal person, as normal as a space marine can be I suppose, until war calls again. Not an amazing story, but definitely serviceable. Definitely the first lacklustre one involving Tyranids.

13. Hell in a bottle by Simon Jowett. A story featuring a lot of hubris, and that computer bugs in 40k can take very different shapes. Good concept and decent execution, but kind of ruined by a stint of atrocious dialogue that I'm not sure was even meant to be taken seriously. Example:

‘By the Golden Throne, that hurt!’ Initiate Caius declared, shaking his head, then prodding gingerly at his temple, over which a bruise was already beginning to form. ‘I was out of ammunition, so hand-to-hand was my only option. Should have known better when I saw it was you!’

Thankfully rare, even if the main baddie has some really terrible speech pattern as well. But that's just silly more than outright groan inducing.

14. Tenebrae by Mark Brendan. A planetary governor witnesses the end of his planet at the hand of Chaos. Surprisingly well written and cerebral, laden with the right amount of despair and angsting without overdoing it. But I didn't expect something from this far back to call out the hypocrisy of the Imperium's actions.

15. Daemonblood by Ben Counter. Despite the name the story does not feature Grey Knights. It's a middling story where the most interesting part is either the planet sized Nurgle Daemon Prince, or the Ultramarine turned Nurgle Champion that gets redeemed at the end. Without having read much else by Ben Counter it somehow feels like a Ben Counter story in a way I can't explain.

16. Know Thine Enemy by Gav Thorpe. Well, it finally happened. I found a story that was such a massive unfun slog to read that I just skipped it after a while. The prose was just utterly boring and bland, the characters remarkably onenote and the plot twist incredibly trite as well.

If you think of the phrase 'Space Marine Bolter porn', this is pretty much that kind of story. It just goes on and on and on about Space Marine details in the more bland and rote way and no detail is spared, regardless of how pointless it might be. My first hint that something would be iffy was probably this part:

The Salamanders hissed and snarled in anger, for their Chapter had a long history of fighting eldar pirates. 

Was this meant to be about Space Wolves in a first draft or what?

Here an example of the overwhelmingly bland prose:

‘We have defeated the eldar before.’ Malesti replied. ‘We know their guile. Their arcane trickeries and sorceries will not avail them against us this time.’ ‘I share your confidence, brother.’ Ramesis said. ‘Captain Nubean is a strong commander. The honour of the Fourth Company prospers under his guidance.’ ‘And yours!’ Malesti added with a chuckle. ‘In the years you have been our chaplain, our battle-brothers’ faith has been sure and steady. They conduct themselves with honour and respect, and do all that we ask of them and more. They do not fail in their duties as warriors of the Adeptus Astartes and they shall not fail us this day either.’ ‘They’ll fight like steppe-lions, of that I’m sure!’ Ramesis remarked.

The part with steppe-lions made me chuckle, considering Nocture is a volcano planet. This feels like one of the first things Thorpe wrote for Black Library, it can't be anything else with how horrible the prose is.

A pity it features Salamanders, a chapter that has never gotten a single good book dedicated to them.

17. Nightmare by Gav Thorpe. A rather unremarkable story about Daemon trickery. You can clearly see the plot twist halfway through, but at the same the hint is completely unnecessary and sorta removes the shock value from the twist at the end, as if Thorpe was uncertain that people would indeed get his super special twist or something.

Either way it's mercifully short and to the point. The prose is decent but there's still nothing special or exciting going on in it truth to be told.

18. Ancient History by Andy Chambers. Finally, some good fucking food. Now this story was a pure delight to read, especially when POV's from deck crews on Navy ships are rare to find. The best part was possibly the tale about man's early ventures into space, and the mention of the Men of Stone and Iron. Also it doesn't bother explaining everything and even ends on a cliffhanger a little. Very good stuff.

19. The Tower by CS Goto. For being a story done written by who many consider to be one the worst 40k authors it was surprisingly benign, if not enjoyable in dealing with weird Imperial bureaucracy.

The silliest part was probably the female Vindicare assassin daily commute inside the temple consisting of tomb raiding herself across various traps and obstacles in the dark.

20. Loyalty's Reward by Simon Jowett. This one has a little of everything. Gangers with Shuriken launchers! Bored Inquisitors who yawn! Grey Knights with jump packs! Who really just regular marines, and can seemingly only say "In the Emperor’s name" and nothing else.

It's pretty decent otherwise, but the switch halfway to "It's CHAOS!" felt boring as the whole preamble about how the organised crime structure on that planet was neat. It felt as if the author ran out of words and then just shrugged and went the easy way out with the rest. A shame tbh. But then I think it would've needed a proper novel treatment to really work without feeling rushed.

It's not about money. There's alot attached to this issue. Including Dejoria changing her styles that I see. It's mostly about her. I found out rather recently that he, too, was raped and he was really heartfelt about things and I told him maybe I could help him

That was a long time ago. About when his movie was announced, just before it came out...

So he had to wait. I offered him before for like 40k and now it's 100k and it's going to go up and up and up until I take him to court if he keeps saying no. So whatever

It's not about the money. He offered me money in 2013. Alot more than I'm asking for now.

So you bitches that piss me off, you have no idea how I work and how shit plays from my hands when I put the cards in the table.

So don't bother me.

I don't have much sympathy. JP will have to pay over one million dollars in order to get everything settled. All I keep is about $250k to make improvements on my house and pay my bills.. everything else goes to charity. That's the rules

So if he gives me money, I'm not interested in taking money from you little bitches that want to say sorry.

There's so much more that not everyone is talking about that's to occur with this settlement.

His lawyer says not to do it. I told him not to tell his lawyer because I knew that's what he would say. And so JP finally realized that what I have done for him is rock solid and his lawyer cannot think of anything better and only wants JP's money.

It's lame and I don't even want it. Bills do. And after that then it's for other people's bills. People that are "handicapped" in some sort of fashion and have an inability to care for themselves in a highly financial situation.

Things like a new paid off home with enough room for all the kids in a good school district with solar panels on their roof. Good people with bad luck

That part is gonna cost over one million dollars but to finish off his criminal acts, he's going to pay several millions of dollars and he's going to give people free solar panels every single month for the rest of his life.

So don't think you can throw some cash at me and be all here shut up.

Anyways. JP isn't even ready for all that.

Idc cause I'm totally ready for it or ready for him to go to prison. Or both.

It's not my problem.

Like it was said "help others live without bills or you do" because in jail you don't pay for your room and board ... In prison, you pay a little by slaving around. At least he will never have to worry about being homeless.

Your made up title to write a summary for is "i need no introduction (welcome to the greatest show)" from skins by the Haunting, which I have been listening to on repeat over the past few days.

1)Since I can remember! At toddler age and maybe even a bit before, my mom would let me and the siblings draw all over these little blank picture books she would staple together. She would then ask what the story was about so she could write it down on each page, and I was already making up new endings to whatever media I could understand like Bug's Life, Jurassic Park, PBS kids shows. If that doesn't count as fanfic though– then I seriously buckled down to write my first one when I was 10, with pencil and paper, and then 22 for actually finishing one and posting it on AO3

7) anytime after 9pm 

9) oh fuck that's a tough one, I'd say in Jagten it's the parts with Paxton stumbling around the Elite Hunting Clubs killing floor, because in the movie that's one of my favorite scenes where Paxton calls Natalya a bitch and then she's like, 'they paid me a lot of money for you. That makes you my bitch.' Just getting to write her seeing his shock and disgust and fear was fun as hell. 

10) I was going to actually go all the way up to some plotline where she does kill him (since Paxton is killed in the Hostel universe I figured Natalya becoming a hunter to do the honors instead would've been so badass of her, despite Paxton being a favorite in his own right he's just very killable), but then I figured it'd be far better to start things off sort of where they began with the fic. Natalya and Paxton facing each other down except this time the resolution is up in the air, and Paxton has no idea that she's coming for him. 

17) The girl, she made a deal, he remembers it now, to save the ghosts she'd come to see as friends, as more parents than her own, sacrificing herself to a crude entity of booze, sex, and filth;

21) If we are talking about outside of AO3 then that would be god, this would be a lot of people both within AO3 and outside of AO3, hm, I really admire this one author who wouldn't you know shares the same name as you! All jokes aside, so much of the fics I've been writing and making lately have been directly inspired by your writing and so I can't help but admire the fuck out of the absolute range of your writing and the ability you have to tackle so many different styles and characters!

25) Yes! Although I can't give any specific examples, I just know I have, and it's usually when writing super hopeful bits after writing a bunch of incredibly harrowing sequences.

27) I make outlines! They're typically very long too and constantly get changed around and shifted and even deleted and rewritten many times. The outline for pretty boy is 40k on any given day and most of that will not actually be what's finally written it's just excerpts and scenes that don't quite work but pieces of them could be stitched together for something better 

28) There isn't exactly anything I'm doing super different now then when I first started! There's words about how I offered for JP to give me money

It's not about money. There's alot attached to this issue. Including Dejoria changing her styles that I see. It's mostly about her. I found out rather recently that he, too, was raped and he was really heartfelt about things and I told him maybe I could help him
