ok but now I need to know your thoughts on the taylor swift lyrics. what songs did you analyze and what were your thoughts on them????
Alright so first of all for context:
this was a lecture about the literary era of romanticism, so for most of that lecture we had been talking about the literary and philosophical concepts and ideas present in that era.
And then the professor went "ok so I am not a swiftie - I haven't even listened to her newest album yet - but I believe Swift's music greatly encapsulates a - simplified , pop-cultural - continuation of the ideas of romanticism in the modern day....so let's analyse some of her song lyrics-"
So he had us quickly look at a few song lyrics from different songs of hers, but the ones he stayed on longest - and the ones he had us do proper academic analysis of - were these from "My tears ricochet" from her Folklore album:

I have to note that these aren't my personal thoughts, I'm just recounting what happened in the lecture, and I'm putting this under a cut so that it isn't super long :
So multiple students (it was a very tightly filled classroom, had to be at least 100-150 students there) had participated in analysing these lyrics and I gotta be honest I don't remember most of the exact details of their analysis because I had a lot of classes today and had been awake since 6am but I'll try to summarize as best I can.
Essentially the main point was the comparison of these lyrics with philosophical concepts by Schelling and especially a comparison in context of this aphorism by german romanticist poet Novalis:
"Wir suchen überall das Unbedingte und finden immer nur Dinge"
["Everywhere we look for the Absolute yet we can only ever find things." (in the original german it is a wordplay)]
So one angle of analysis was that these two verses of Swift's lyrics follow this philosophical concept as posited by Hardenberg/Novalis - such as "home" here, as the only defined location, representing the Absolute , the object of Longing as it is conceptualised in romanticism, this that is desired innately but cannot be reached in ways humanly possible, as humans can only ever find "Things": abstractions, objects and concepts limited in their scope and at most a reflection of the Absolute, something that can at best be asymptotically approximated but not be directly perceived or grasped physically or intellectually. Thus here the idea that the lyrical "I" can go "anywhere" and , following that, observe anything, and yet will always be unable to reach the defined and Absolute of "home."
Home then, as defined by other students in the lecture, would be the innate idea of some sort of absolute security in the self, a place of comfort and belonging and a place of certainty. Home, thus, as not just a location but as a concept: a kind of pre-conscious knowledge of being ('Being' here possibly in the hegelian sense), an experience of pure existence. Suppose an analysis also referencing Spinoza's concept of the Substance, the natura naturans, which singular modi are necessarily extensions of and ultimately 'return' to ( 'return' here used simplifying, as modi constituate extensions or aspects of the indivisible infinite Substance under the attributes of Thought and Extension, which thus cannot really be divided and, following, cannot 'return' to it since they were never truly separated.)
Of course, romanticism and general philosophy of the era being concerned with theological questions as well, one student pointed out another angle to view Swift's lyrics under in regards to romanticist theoreticism, that being the theological one: "Home" as the Absolute and the Absolute as God or a christian-mysticist interpretation of it either way, "Anywhere" as the world of human perception and "Home" as the world of god that life springs from, in relation to an article the professor had mentioned about a Times (iirc) journalist visiting a Taylor Swift concert and calling it a "religious experience" to sing specifically the quoted line with and within a crowd of tens of thousands of people.
In regards to this last point the professor also specified that "religious experience" here is not necessarily limited to the scope of (protestant) christianity but rather is to be seen as some sort of pre- or post-religious understanding of a form of ontological transcendence that escapes the boundaries of rational describability.
Following that we also analysed the album title and its cover art:
The romanticist connection in the title being fairly obvious as "Folklore" as a literary category is something romanticist authors in their nature-mysticism and attempt at distinction from Enlightenment era concepts of pure reason loved to discuss, recreate and include in their works.
Furthermore then the connection of the cover art , which students compared to works of famous romanticist painter Caspar David Friedrich (here the painting "Easter Morning"):

The composition of a lone human figure among the trees during a foggy morning or evening is a very popular motif in (german) romanticism as the fog represents the Unknown and - as mentioned above - the always out of reach and never truly perceptible (by human means) Absolute as well as the everlasting Longing towards it. The trees and forests as well a popular romanticist theme as part of its nature-mysticism and above mentioned contrast to the Enlightenment rationalism as practiced in the cities and structured human society.
Apparently on either this or the Evermore album (I don't know on which as I don't listen to Swift's songs and can't remember which song exactly the professor quoted there) there is a lyric saying "we are the new romanticists" as well.
All this to say that after probably twenty minutes of analysing Taylor Swift lyrics in an academic framework of literary theory and ontological philosophy- as well as repeated promises by the professor that he "is not a swiftie" - the prof stated that "Taylor Swift probably didn't put nearly as much thought into this as we did just now but she is an international phenomenon and does - wether intentional or not - make use of concepts and ideas used in romanticist writing and philosophy so analysing her lyrics seemed apt."
#ask#anon ask#WHEW THAT TOOK A WHILE TO WRITE#sorry but I had to check my references and everything lmao#but yes this is the gist of what that discussion during the lecture was like#and yes people did chuckle when he told us to analyse a Taylor Swift song

Yes, Tsubame and Brook were definitely a lot alike, much more alike than Brook had thought initially. They could understand each other on a level that Brook hadn't had with most other people in this town. "I get it," he told Tsu. "Everything I had was back in Massachusetts. My family - for all their faults - are back there and don't understand why I left a promising job as a surgeon at one of the best hospitals in the country to come here to work as a general practitioner. Nearly all of my friends were work friends only it seems because not one of them has checked in since I came here. And the only person who ever really saw me, he...well he's there too." At least Cole had checked in, but that honestly made Brook miss him even more. These were private thoughts though, one Brook didn't think sharing during an appointment with a patient would be appropriate. He smiled at Tsu's analogy, nodding. "Yeah," Brook agreed, "I'm not either. I sort of feel like I couldn't get the tent up at all, and now I'm stuck out in the rain."
It was clear that Tsu's dad was a piece of work, and Brook frowned; he hated when parents treated their kids this way. "My parents were the same way. I didn't necessarily have to become a doctor, but if I had chosen to do anything that wasn't to their standards, they would not have been able to comprehend my thought process at all...kind of like when I came here." But was that really true? Was it can't, or was it won't? Honestly Brook didn't know. "I wish I knew what to tell you to make it easier," he told Tsu. "But all I can say is...well, fuck 'em. We're going to do what we want to do whether they like it or not. I think maybe that's the best way to deal with it. If they get mad or if they eventually accept it, that's on them. But at least we'll be doing what we want." Of course it wasn't quite so simple - what Brook wanted was to be back in Salem - but that was the gist of it.
What Tsu was saying didn't surprise Brook at all. A lot of patients didn't want to seek therapy for whatever reason, whether it be time constraints, feeling like they didn't need it, embarrassment, or whatever the case may be. "You know, I could try and convince you, but I'd be a hypocrite," Brook replied, perhaps a little too honest in this moment. "I should probably get therapy too, but I don't. I guess we're even more alike now." Really this wasn't the way he should be handling this, but it felt like the most authentic way; Brook didn't think Tsubame would respond to lectures. And he didn't fault Tsu for having certain stipulations for medication. "I get it," Brook told her. "You don't want anything that makes you a zombie because then what's the point of even existing?" Even actual zombies had a purpose (that purpose being brains). "I'm going to write you a prescription for Ativan," Brook told Tsubame, taking his prescription pad out of the pocket of his white coat. He scribbled down the script and signed it, handing the page to Tsu. "It's the lowest dose, and this is an as-needed medication. If you respond well but think you might need a higher dose or might need to take it more often, we can discuss that then." After handing Tsu the page, Brook looked at her and felt like he needed to say more. "I really should be pushing therapy a little more. Maybe I'll actually go now," he said. How could he push for that when he himself was resisting?
Tsubame liked hearing Brook talk to her about his life, it made her feel less ill when the doctor she sought after was talking about his aimlessness. It made her feel a lot less alone in her troubles. "I know what you mean. If I didn't still have my job I wouldn't really have anything, Jesus that sounds a lot more sadder than what I intended." She laughed at herself, contrasting the depressing words that she obviously didn't mean at face value. "I mean everything would be so different I wouldn't even know where to start placing down pegs, if that makes sense. You've got a whole new tent with this town but missing all the old things that made you want to stay in it, like friends or your old job. I'm not much of a camper." Or a therapist, she thought. She hoped he didn't mind her rambling so much, she was meant to be the patient after all.
Tsu couldn't help but audibly groan when she thought about her dad, "Their way is the right way isn't even how they view it, it's like their way is the only way. It's just completely insane to think any other way." It obvious she has thought about this a lot. As Brook talked about Tsu's job, she got a lot more passionate with her words, "The only way my father will get me out of this job is from the cold, dead hands." She scoffed, it's obvious it's something that she has had to talk about frequently. "Oh I've tried talking to him about it, I've been trying for about 28 years now. He has never wanted me to join his career, anything else would have been better for him. The worst part is it isn't even a sexism thing, if he just said 'this job isn't for women' it'd feel so much better to go to work every day out of spite, but no. He is tragically a very open minded person, except for me." Her tirade eventually died down a bit. She has ranted about this countless times, and she is just as fervent talking about it now to Brook.
Tsu shook her head when Brook asked if she had considered talking to anyone, "I don't have enough free time to go to therapy or whatever." She probably could if she put in the effort to make a better schedule, but she has the underlying thought that plagues so many people that therapy just isn't for her. She isn't against it, or the people who seek it out, in the slighest, but she isn't going to seek it out for herself. Even if it would realistically help a lot. "I'm not opposed to taking medication, but I don't want anything I have to take super often and will make me all drowsy or whatever. Something that I could take when I'm feeling particularly anxious or having trouble going to sleep would be nice though." She felt a little awkward about being so particular, but she didn't want any kind of medication to affect her or make her a zombie. She also dosen't know a lot about medication, probably coincides with her ignorance of her general health.

A fun little secret
In light of waking up to my blog getting a small raid thanks to my little joke post.
( @raygirlramblings that was the best thing i ever woke up to after sleeping off my chronic insomnia bout episodes. you precious bean you)
i want to share something
so sometimes i like to share in little ideas or just...have fun with one of my friends. These little back and forths i do are NOT canon to my projects. most of these are just au’ stuff thats just having fun. and i dont tend to discuss those. its just having fun and has nothing to do with my actual writing projects minus how the guys tend to act. as i tend to man alot of the main cast here when we do
however i do want to share one. it has to do about the whole DONT EVER GIVE RAYMAN OR GLOBOX ACTUAL GUNS
I too, believe giving real weapons to them is a bad idea...ESPECIALLY GLOBOX.
In rayman’s case. only real “weapon” i ever trust that man with is an axe that he will proceed to use for chopping wood. thats really it.
I want to keep my friend’s privacy so i will not be using their name or their character, nor what that character did in this. Here’s the story.
So i like to brainstorm and have fun with au ideas. my friend here and i decided to one day try a hand at a rayman red dead redemption 2 esque one.
So the general gist was rayman managed to get a group of his friends together just to go exploring. Rayman is actually the guy that is very anti-hunt. he prefers seeking the creature out. marvelling over them, maybe take a few snapshots for bragging rights. he adores fishing but is very much catch release. if he does want to get a fish for eating purposes its not going to be a legendary here.
So during this little adventure. Uglette decided to grow a little garden. Specifically she tried to grow a lil corn patch... Rayman was getting a horse saddled (the horses in this were the lil limbless ones you saw in the rayman educational games here) and next thing he knew he caught eye of globox, standing over that corn patch and the friggen frog dad HAD GOTTEN AHOLD OF A HUNTING RIFLE
rayman paniced like “WHO GAVE GLOBOX A GUN” no one in the party knew who brought that damn thing (Blame kinda went on raymesis. only reason HE was there was because of my friend’s character.) Globox was trying to keep any crows or glutes from raiding his wife’s corn
(If you do some research. glutes are not the globox species. they are actually pest birds that globox hates with a passion. i like thinking glutes are the “Crows” of the rayman universe that will raid your garden and eat the seeds you planted)
(this is a glute. and him stick his leggy out far)
Rayman begged globox to “not shoot someone’s eye out” globox, completely stone faced would respond “Jokes on you rayman this is NOT red rider brand” poor rayman had to leave. he decided to go fishing.
So. There were a few oc’s here in this party. One of these was an oc that is still fairly new to the projects. in the main stream she’s a knaaren elderly woman and actually is gumsi’s adoptive grandmother. or as he calls her “mee-maw” i shall refer to her as mee-maw here. Mee-maw is also a rare kinda knaaren that in the main projects DOES often wander out of the ruins but has to be fully robed and hood up. Gumsi does actually travel with her from time to time despite the dislike of being in sunlight
As rayman’s trying to fish his worries off. Mee-maw comes with gumsi on her shoulders and she just smiles and asks if she and gumsi can stick around for a while. Rayman asked if everything was alright and gumsi just responded with “THAT STUPID TOAD IS FIRING AT ANYTHING THAT MOVES NEAR THE CORN PATCH” Rayman starts to panic about the safety of the camp. but this woman, all smiles while gumsi’s snickering away on her shoulders, performs an about face and you see the rifle globox had was strapped to this woman’s back.
After a while rayman returns to the camp. and globox approaches this woman going “There you are ma’am. give me back my rifle if you please” Mee-maw smiles, unstraps the rifle from her back, holds it up and points to it going “You mean this rifle here?” Globox crosses his arms and goes “Yes. Please give it back to me at once” Mee-maw. once again without missing a beat. responded “GLADLY” and proceeded to club that frogman over his friggen head with the gun. she then fiercely lectured globox on how he needs to practice gun safety and expressed how SHE HAD A CHILD WITH THE PARTY
Gumsi proceeded to lose his shit laughing and fell off his mee-maw’s shoulders.
Moral of the story. Yes. Do not give globox real guns. EVERYONE WITHIN RADIUS FEARS THIS. AND FOR THE LOVE OF JANO’S JAWS ESPECIALLY DONT GIVE HIM FIREARMS WHEN THE GUY IS DRUNK. IF GLOBOX HAS ONE WHILE DRUNK YOU GET A FAST FORWARD OVER TO THE FAIRY COUNCIL WHERE THE HEART OF THE WORLD IS AND GRAND MINIMUS JUST STIRS AND GOES “GENTLEMEN NOW IS THE TIME TO PANIC”

Dollmaker Talk PT 2
*snaps fingers* Guess what? I got the “okay” sign to talk a little bit more about Runawayoutlaw’s unfinished Dollmaker build.
That means yes I will be going into my thoughts about the characters and setting this time. I focused on Dollmaker being outside the Rockland canon and the game mechanics last time.
(MAJOR spoilers below for the unfinished Dollmaker build)
First of all, what is the plot of Dollmaker? Well the MC this time around is a medical student attending a seminar that day on improving relations between demons and humans for the greater good. One of the very speakers at the lecture is none other than Dr. Sano Kojima. The MC apparently catches his eye and you two seem to get along fairly well considering you admire him for his position (he’s a demon ambassador) and he appreciates that you seem to be specializing in demons for your medical degree. All seems to be going well and you look forward to discussing the profession with him more...only to get caught off guard when he knocks you out and brings you to his home. The atmosphere quickly changes when you wake up and he cuts straight to point that his main goal is turn you into a human doll! He puts a binding spell on you so you can’t escape the house, but he gives you the freedom to walk about as you please.
That’s pretty much the gist of the game. From there it’s about exploration and getting to know the inhabitants of the house, and on rare occasions, seeing some visitors.
Sano Kojima
As I stated in my previous post, both Sano and Akira have been introduced beforehand in BTD. This game was meant to revamp the characters and stories. For the most part, I’d say personality wise that Sano stays very similar to his BTD counterpart. He’s very calm and professional. He’s very much into his research and appreciates compliance from the MC. He can still kill you in this, but the only such ending I found is if you fight back repeatedly right away. Like I said, he prefers compliance. He is probably one of the more sane of the three main house inhabitants and possibly the nicest? It’s hard to say when I feel like both Sano and Annabelle’s routes weren’t quite finished yet. That or I haven’t found everything yet.
I will say compared to the BTD game, Sano here doesn’t show nearly as much sadism or malice. He DOES still want to turn you into a doll though, but again I don’t think his route was fully finished (or I haven’t found the right paths yet). I didn’t get a full ending with him completing the doll transformation, so other than the beginning, we don’t get to delve into that obsession as much as I would have liked. I remember playing BTD and getting that one ending and thinking, “Oh! I love that concept, I wish I could have seem more of the character focused on that.” Dollmaker is obviously supposed to do that, but the creator didn’t get around to the finishing touches. I kept getting stuck in the same loops with “Sano’s route,” so I can’t say much else.
Annabelle Winter
Annabelle is a brand new character. There’s a bio for her luckily in the game to explain some of who she is (a former lead singer), but otherwise I probably was able to get the least information about her in the game. I remember some notes about her one tumblr way back when Dollmaker was being developed. Basically, she’s supposed to be Sano’s “first doll.” You, the MC, would then end up being the second doll. You can tell this really doesn’t sit well with Annabelle, even if I couldn’t get much more information about her feelings in the game. There’s a conversation between Akira and her you can spy on, but you really aren’t quite sure what’s happening. Her room was also always locked for me. I don’t know if the programming for it all hadn’t been completed like Sano’s wasn’t, or I just wasn’t performing the correct actions.
The existence of Annabelle is interesting though because then it does make you ask questions like: What’s her relationship with Sano? Are they lovers or something else? Is she jealous that he’s making a new doll? Does Sano plan to throw Annabelle out after he has you? Does this mean the MC could also get tossed out later? What’s her relationship with Akira? Stuff like that adds more tension to the atmosphere. On the plus side, at least you know Sano’s successfully turned someone into a doll before, so you know the procedure should go fine (yay?). Personality wise, I didn’t have enough to go off of to get a real good idea of what she’s like. She can be a little bitter and creepy, that’s for sure, but also talks sensibly with someone like Akira. It’s hard to say.
Akira Kojima
Ah Akira! Probably the character that was the closest to completion in my opinion. That doesn’t mean his whole path WAS complete, but compared to Sano (one death ending vs. couldn’t progress) and Annabelle (hardly any progression and no ending found), Akira actually had decent introductions, quality time with the MC and an ending. Granted, it was mostly the ONE ending...but I kind of loved it and it wasn’t a death ending at least. Before I get into that, what’s he like in Dollmaker? Well he definitely has more of a domineering and feisty personality I’d say, contrasting nicely with Sano. He also can be both naughty and tender I’d say when it comes to romance. He can be pretty sensitive at times. You also learn he’s a contract killer in this game, but he doesn’t seem to really enjoy the work. That’s the only major hint I’d say of the guy being unhappy. I remember during the development process it was hinted that Akira has a LOT of baggage in this universe. Baggage unfortunately that seems to make unstable enough that he will completely flip his lid if he thinks someone is turning on him. What I’m saying is...the dude actually has a yandere ending XD I’m not joking. For those who know of my main blog and are probably thinking, “Did YOU enjoy that?” the answer is obviously HECK YES! See what happens is if you get too cozy with Akira, apparently that makes him latch onto you.
I swear to god when I played my first run, I was NOT trying to make him jealous. I thought there was more to do so I didn’t think it was a big deal if I didn’t wake him in bed (it seemed rude to me), go to the kitchen and compliment Sano’s eye. But those Telltale mechanics from the last post I talked about? This is where I realized too late they were hinting that Akira gets VERY aware of what you do in the house once he starts to like you. He doesn’t like it AT ALL if you either seem like you’re trying to leave or get friendly with anyone else then. He goes full “snap.” What he does is try to “train you” so that you agree the MC belongs to him and him alone then. I love how he does it actually because I find it pretty realistic. Yeah he gets really rough with you initially once he’s snapped, but the big thing is he throws you into a large closet. He just leaves you with a bucket and nothing else. And then he makes NO CONTACT with you. You go through...who knows how many days with occasional bottles of water or food placed on the floor without Akira talking to you or even you seeing him. Depending on your actions, sometimes he’ll pop in to check on you, but if you show that your spirit isn’t broken yet, he goes back to the no contact. He’s essentially driving the MC insane through isolation. It’s very simple but incredibly effective. Imagine literally being given nothing to do for days on end with limited food and water and just a bucket to relieve yourself in. It can start to wear on you. Humans are social creatures too (we NEED other people). I love MC’s with stronger spirits actually that don’t bend to a yandere’s whims all that easily. So yeah, I kept the MC yelling and tried to just hold out as long as I could. This puts you in a loop though and Outlaw did a nice little touch where there’s this static effect over the screen when you continue to make decisions. This helps to emphasize how monotonous this routine is becoming for the MC and you really feel less of the urge to fight back anymore. I can see why the MC broke in the end. Once they are broken, Akira comes to collect you and that’s pretty much the end.
Obviously I loved playing through Akira’s path the most. I will do one small critique here since...I’m kind of a nut about yanderes. I think it would have been nice to have a FEW more hints before Akira’s “snap” that he suffers from something like anxiety or separation over losing people. There might have been some and I just got lost in the build maze finding this information XD Like I said, I knew he had baggage (and even lost a lover) from the creator’s tumblr page during development, but I think it would have been nice to have some hints like that in the game. Just food for thought in case they want to try another yandere character in the future. Some people don’t like if you pull a “yandere snap” out of nowhere without at least dropping some kind of hint of instability with the character prior. I mean I’ll always enjoy yandere endings regardless honestly XD It depends on how serious you want to take it though. This situation was different than say Marcus from Till Death Do Us Part only because....that game basically is ALL about the “snap” there (no real progression to it like in Dollmaker). You had just enough backstory (The MC and Marcus are divorced and Marcus gives you nightmares) that him coming back as the ex from hell isn’t surprising. People can fill in the blanks and fantasize all they want there about what went wrong with the relationship beforehand. With Akira, you’re seeing the relationship progression play out, so there’s a little more pressure to make the “snap” a little more believable.
I don’t know how fair it is to critique an] game that’s clearly not finished though 0.o
There’s was other stuff in the game I enjoyed like all the little Easter eggs with the plants and paintings, and Cain even popped up briefly in a bad end :P There was other stuff I also didn’t learn about though like Mio (sorry I scared you lol), but it is what it is.
Still a nice treat.

Ok so the idea is in my mind now thanks to what my classmates were posting about on the myinfo discussion boards earlier, and I know that nobody here cares about this, but I need to gather my thoughts here. So here's an outline for what I think would happen in a Da Vinci Code/ Black Echo crossover
It starts with Langdon being involved in a high-profile documentary about the grail and the priory that's being filmed in Hollywood. Then a bunch of people involved in the documentary start being murdered, and Bosch is assigned to the case
They meet at the crime scene for one of the murders; Langdon is shaken up because the people working on the documentary with him were people he'd worked with before and gotten along with, and he's trying not to show how shaken he is and play himself off as cool, but Bosch sees right through him and recognizes his distraught emotional state. He's sympathetic, but he does have a job to do here... it's time to ask this guy some questions
HB: Professor Langdon, right? I'm officer Bosch. I have a few questions for you.
RL: Bosch... that's an interesting name
HB: Like the painter, yes. You wouldn't be the first to point it out, believe me.
RL: I've done many lectures on the religious symbolism in that man's paintings. Tell me, officer, how familiar with his work are you?
HB: Not very. Now, Mr. Langdon--
RL: You can call me Robert if you want.
HB: ...Mr. Langdon, what kind of relationship did you have with the victim?
...You get the picture; they don't get along very well at first. Bosch thinks Langdon is too self-obsessed and show-offy, while Langdon thinks Bosch is too grim and doesn't approve of his smoking habit
But since Bosch is a devoted and hardworking detective, he puts aside his mild annoyance with Langdon and does his best to solve the case. Problem is, Langdon clearly knows something about the case that he's refusing to tell anyone. *sonic voice* That's no good!
Bosch confronts Langdon about this in private, very angry... maybe cue a wall slam except that Bosch is shorter than Langdon so it does maybe look just a little bit silly. But more importantly a little bit homoerotic in an angry and repressed kinda way
After a bit of arguing and a very thorough check of the room they're in to make sure nobody is watching or listening in, Langdon confides to Bosch about the Grail and his experiences with it
Bosch is skeptical, but he's no stranger to tangled webs of dark secrets, so his reaction to all this is less "wow!!" and more "shit. Really? Fuck. Okay... huh. I need a drink." So Langdon pours him a drink, they agree to team up to collaborate on solving the case, and this is bonding moment #1 in which their barriers start to crack just a little bit
But of course Bosch, a decent guy at heart who cares about people's lives, isn't gonna let some random symbologist get too wrapped up in what's clearly a dangerous case. So after he and Langdon figure out together where the killer might be hiding out, Bosch goes to the location alone--armed and ready, but alone nonetheless
It goes bad!
Meanwhile, Langdon figures out by talking to some of the other cops where Bosch has taken off to. He gets there just in time to see the cloud of dust as the killer gets away, leaving a badly injured Bosch lying on the ground. Probably in some dark alleyway or dingy apartment or something idk. Very dark and very dramatic
Shifting in and out of consciousness in the backseat as Langdon drives him to a hospital, Bosch starts having a PTSD flashback nightmare. There's nothing Langdon can really do to help him out there, and he feels bad about it
Flash forward a couple days. We get bonding moment #2 as Langdon scolds a recovering Bosch for being so reckless
RL: I mean, you could have been killed!
HB: That's part of my job. Always has been.
RL: But still--
HB: I'm not like you, remember? You may have gotten involved in some dangerous situations before, but at the end of the day, you're still a civilian. It's my job to protect you.
RL: How would you dying help us get to the bottom of this case? If you want to help me, then stay alive and work with me.
HB: Fine. So, did you just come here to yell at me?
RL: Actually, that's not the only reason. I figured something out about the case... something that I think can help us
(This probably wouldn't be the exact dialogue but you get the gist)
Also Langdon sees Bosch's tattoo and if he asks about it then Bosch definitely does not answer. But when he gets home Langdon researches rat imagery and symbolism and eventually figures out, if not the connection to the war, at least that this dude has probably been through some tough times
They also each individually make the realization that Bosch having a rat tattoo + Langdon having a mickey mouse wristwatch is kind of an interesting coincidence... but when Langdon brings it up Bosch gets kinda snappy with him because, believe me, it's really not even remotely close to the same thing
So they get back to work on the case, but as soon as Bosch is back on his feet he retreats back into his shell, which disheartens Langdon somewhat for reasons that he can't pinpoint. (Hint: it's that Langdon was beginning to recognize the soft heart buried beneath Bosch's rough exterior, and guess that he must have had a pretty rough life, and on some subconscious level he was beginning to drift toward the "I can fix him!" mentality)
Still, they've got a job to do. They spend a few days, maybe a week tracking down the killer, during which we get a couple more small bonding moments during which Bosch demonstrates his kind and caring side, and Langdon starts spending maybe a little longer than necessary staring at him when he's not looking. Bosch wonders when he stopped finding Langdon's tendency for sharing information annoying and started to like the sound of his voice. But neither of them are at a stage where they're gonna be like "so basically I have ptsd and claustrophobia because of my traumatic backstory" or anything
At some point, though (maybe when he's slightly drunk) Bosch makes a gruff remark in passing about having been betrayed before, and Langdon replies that he's been betrayed too, by a close friend. They kind of raise their eyebrows at each other, an unspoken realization that they're connected by more bonds than expected, and they clink their glasses together
So the killer's hideout involves crawling through a small enclosed space and they both know this in advance and the plan they come up with is "one of us goes in while the other waits outside and stands guard" (the way the killer's lair is set up would make this a good plan. I'm not gonna come up with all the details right now, because if I could do that, then I'd become a mystery novelist) but they haven't laid out who'll be going in the small enclosed space and they're both secretly counting on the other doing it
Then they get there and it's like. Hmm. Oops! Neither of them want to go in because they both have the same psychological issues
An argument ensues, but they're less trying to convince each other to go in the small enclosed space and more frustrated at the other for keeping secrets. Eventually Langdon agrees to be the one to go in because by now he's pieced together that Bosch is a vet and that his trauma is therefore probably a lot "worse" (not that those things are really quantifiable)
Bosch is super grateful but also feels terrible, like it's his fault for being too weak, and promises Langdon to make it up for him later--"So be sure to stay alive for me, okay, Robert?"
RL: Wait, did you just call me by my first name? I think that's the first time I've heard you say it.
HB: Hey, what can I say? You've grown on me.
RL: Heh. You... you've grown on me, too, Harry.
HB: Robert..... good luck in there.
They sort of smile and nod at each other, solemn and melancholy (and repressed). And then Langdon goes in and does the thing but of course it's some kind of a trap and he gets stuck in the small enclosed space and Bosch hears him getting attacked in there and hey, Bosch can't magically overcome his severe war trauma but in that moment his brain just kinda turns off and he's able to power through it long enough to go in and get Langdon out safely
They're both very shaken from all this but now they've got the killer out in the open so it's time for the final showdown. Working together, they elaborately lure the killer into confessing to the murders of the people working on the Grail documentary... those people knew too much, they couldn't be allowed to keep living. Naturally, Bosch is wearing a wire that's picking all this up and recording it
But then the killer finishes with "and you, the symbologist who knows the true location of the Grail... you can't be allowed to live either!" and before either of them can react he shoots Langdon! This makes Bosch extremely angry and he immediately shoots the killer like five consecutive times in the chest
Turns out Langdon's alive, the bullet just missed his heart or lungs or whatever, and he's lying on the ground in shock from getting shot staring up at Bosch and is like "...you killed him...?"
HB: Oh, right, I almost forgot... you've never killed someone before, have you?
RL: No, although I've been acquainted with more murders than I would like...
HB: Well, here's one more murderer you're acquainted with, then. Come on, let's go
Hospital time redux ft. congratulating each other on solving the case and a whole lot going unsaid between them. They both agree that they ended up making a decent team in the end...
In a quiet moment when he thinks Langdon is asleep, Bosch starts reminiscing out loud about his childhood, his time in the war, all the blood he's seen spilled and spilled himself both as a veteran and a detective. Of course Langdon was actually awake to hear all that, and after a long moment of silence he starts talking quietly about falling down a well as a child, as well as some of the scarier moments in his past adventures and how those have messed him up a little
RL: Of course, what I've been through is nothing compared to you... I mean, you, you're amazing. I can't believe I ever judged you for having a cold exterior.
HB: I wouldn't call myself amazing. More like, a poor bastard doing his best to keep his head afloat.
RL: No, no, that's... that's why you're amazing. The fact that you are where you are now.
HB: What, in a hospital at the bedside of a symbology professor who's lucky to be alive after solving an elaborate murder case?
RL: Hey, it's not my first rodeo.
HB: Mine neither. (Heh...) maybe we should start a club.
At the end they say goodbye to each other and they like shake hands or something but they're still repressed so they just go their separate ways and don't see each other again
But MAYBE a few months or years down the line Bosch eventually leaves the police force (either because he wisens up and realizes that acab, or because he acts up too much and gets fired) and can no longer afford to live in LA so he moves to a different part of the country and by pure coincidence it ends up being where Langdon lives. And he finds out when he sees an ad for one of Langdon's lectures, and he attends and Langdon spots him in the crowd and he sort of visibly stiffens and then softens. You can figure out where things go from there
(I actually don't know where exactly things would go from there but maybe, someday, eventually they kiss?)
#this is silly and about a topic nobody cares about i know but the idea is FIRMLY IN my head#and i will go more crazy if i don't post about it than if i do#also confession time i haven't read very far into the black echo yet and ive already forgotten several details of the da vinci code#after reading it like last month so idk if this is even very in character but i did my best.#point is i think this idea is fun and i might use it for my creative project if i can manage to adapt it into something 5-10 pages in lengt
