Half an oyster shell demonstrating pearl shell button manufacture, circa 1875-1885
This object is part of a collection which illustrates how pearl shell was made into pearl buttons in Sydney in the 1930s. The display was given to the Museum by The Pearlbutton Manufacturing Company of Foster Street, Sydney, in 1933.
Pearl divers in places such as Thursday Island, Broome and Port Darwin harvested the Golden Lip pearl shell, (Pinctada maxima), from which the buttons were made. The shell was shipped to the Sydney factory for production. After cutting the button shaped pieces from the shell, the 'blanks' were then split to an even thickness, an operation performed by hand and one requiring considerable judgement and skill.
Buttons made from pearl shell were valued because they were durable and retained their lustre unaffected by washing. After World War II, plastics replaced pearl shell as the preferred material for buttons.
The Torres Strait supplied over half the world demand for pearl shell in the 1890s. In addition to buttons, pearl shell was used for cutlery, hair combs, jewellery, decorative objects and inlay for furniture. The Powerhouse Museum collection includes a variety of objects made from pearl shell.

that Echo Flower button up that Sans is wearing in one of your drawings would be real cool if it was to exist (unless it was made of polyester) as the design is well made.
Image for reference:

I'm glad you think it'd be cool!!! I also think it'd be really cool. I'd LOVE to make it real but AHH finding manufacturers for non polyester button ups has been driving me crazy egfjdbdk
But I mean... if people are interested, I'll see what I can do in the future 👀
#i know there are print on demand manufacturers that do polyester button ups#but id ALSO like non polyester ones. lol#this also reminds me i gotta finish the other fashion lineups ahfjfmngkebk#anyway i love making fabric patterns id be totally down to make more 🥺#but also im not sure abt the details surrounding making this sorta merch for ut!#the only thing regarding clothing was from a WHILE back#hm.#i would really like to make this real though 🥺 itd be so cool..........................#id absolutely LOVE to make apparel. i love designing clothes#velwy.txt#inbox#anon

You all are now looking at the first ever physical Mouthwash: Space Tragedy button merchandise, all hand drawn
These were based on some stickers that @skuffypaw showed me one time that reminded us both of the Mobilewashing characters
#blimmy art#mobilewashing#nurse mobilewashing#jim co-pilot mobilewashing#swanz mobilewashing#shinsuke mobilewashing#I'll for sure get to Captain (and Riley too) in the future#really glad with how these came out#note to everybody here: If you want merch but can't afford it or can't go to a manufacturer and buy it in bulk-#make it yourself. Make your own stuff#Buttons are easy in my opinion plus you can get a really good deal on packs of them#Mobilewashing au

nothing funnier to me than crocheting a piece i plan to sell and having my price estimation change drastically halfway through
(before starting the pattern) oh yeah the bg3 owlbear teddy, that's a bit bigger than the stuff i usually make, maybe $100
(on round 35 of the body piece, crying and inexplicably covered in blood) i can't charge any less than $300 if i survive making it
#crochet#shitpost? kinda?#idk#anyways pspspsps i'm gonna start selling a TON of handmade items in june#i'm building up inventory until i launch my shop :3#not just crochet#there'll be buttons and sewn plushies and kandi and therian gear#and maybe keychains if the manufacturer i have in mind doesn't spike in price for america reasons#:(

Pro tip: if someone is doing something that isn't going to explode, maybe instead of physically interposing yourself between them and the thing that someone else is giving on how to use, simply SAY "you're giving them the wrong instructions" or "hey, babe, you missed a step telling our guest how the washing machine works,
#for clarification I was the one using the thing and the spouse of the person I'm complaining about was giving the instructions#also if someone's staring at the machine you should probably ask if they just haven't found the button rather than assuming they're confuse#you have known my vision-impaired ass my entire life why are you assuming my eyes are working and my brain is not?#historically it has been the exact inverse >:0#ignore Morg#negative#ripping things out of someone's hands like they're a child is something you only do if they're AT LEAST about to lose a finger#NOT when they're staring at a flat plane of buttons on a closed machine looking for where this damn manufacturer put the whatever button

Cute and clickie square switches
square switches, swear scritches! we got these samples of "12mm" square tactiles with an embedded white LED - they come from the same factory as our '808 step switches' (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=808+step) and look like they can go in every day 12mm tactile footprints with an additional LED in each corner. they have a nice fairly even glow and can fit into a breadboard or perfboard! now that these are ladyada-approved, we'll get them on order soon.

are makeship plushies even good? as in, quality. ive never heard anything bad about them (ill be honest i havent heard ANYTHING about them) but im always annoyed by the fact that they ONLY do campagins you cant just go "hi heres the money make me 100 plushies" and they seem to have a rerun thing but only for particularly sucessful plushies...
If they are, i wonder if theres a reputable maker out there like them that'll REALLY get the job done right off the bat no campaigning needed...
#tbh my dream is to have a supplier for plushes and enamel pins. I really want to make them#Id love to collaborate n run lil merch stores for streamers or smthn but most of all#i just like plush and enamel pin merch and would like to get to producing my own#im SUPER picky about sticker quality and print quality so im willing to make those at home (prints bigger than 8x14 exempt fr now unless#theyre screenprinted or linocut or smthn)#like i currently make my own stickers but its more bc im in the testing phase of materials#i rly dont like how redbubble eats like all your profits n activey dont promote mine anymore cuz im teyna make my own shop from home...#resin? sculpted models? stickers? badges/buttons? all in the realm of doable from home#acrylic charms in THEORY are doable but i havent quite figured out the process/it wouldnprobably be cheaper to find a manufacturer#but enamel pins and plushes are the two kinds of merch you CANT make at home. reasonably#it should be noted i suck at promoting myself and so i FOR SURE would suck at a makeship campaign#i just suck dogshit at that n being consistent. i barely peomoted my redbubble before i decided to let it waste away
