Puppets Imitate Art
Pili employees are strong contenders for the funniest people on the planet and nowhere is this more apparent than their social media posts where they use Photoshop wizardry to put those puppets in situations. Here are some of my favorites, all referencing/parodying famous works of art:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rembrandt: The Night Watch (1642)
The gang's all here in this recreation for Mie Tian Hai's birthday, complete with a cake for the birthday warlord. Shout-out to jester!Lin Xue Ya from the first movie as the drummer on the right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raphael: Tempi Madonna (1508)
Raphael did so many Madonna and Child paintings, it can be difficult to tell them apart but the castle in the background on the middle right gives this one away. Given what happened in canon, this one's kind of painful, but the parallels are undeniable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leonardo da Vinci: The Last Supper (c. 1495–1498)
The cast of Bewitching Melody of the West settles in for a recreation of this iconic piece, with Pili character Baili Binghong, the "father of Thunderbolt Fantasy", standing in for Christ.
me: hold on I gotta look something up real quick me, a few seconds later: yeah this is funny actually
It turns out Baili Binghong was Gen Urobuchi's favorite character from the Pili main series, and when Pili killed him off, Urobuchi was stunned, which in turn led to the creation of Thunderbolt Fantasy. RIP, Baili Binghong; thanks for taking one for the team!
For additional emphasis, Pili originally dropped this one on Thanksgiving, which is why there's turkey and pie... except for Baili Binghong, who has a bento (Pili slang for character death) in preparation for his ascent to Puppet Heaven.
There's so much going on here, it's hard to pick a favorite, but I love that the good guys and bad guys are on opposite sides of the table, and also Lin Xue Ya's pose is especially funny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gustav Klimt: The Kiss (c. 1907)
Lou Zhen Jie embraces Seven Blasphemous Deaths with fervent devotion surrounded by gold and flowers. This is less of a direct recreation than a reference, as evidenced by the golden halo around Lou Zhen Jie's head, which would not be out of place in a medieval manuscript (one of Klimt's influences/inspirations for the original piece).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alphonse Mucha: F. Champenois Imprimeur-Éditeur (1897)
There are a number of different riffs of this Mucha print featuring different characters, all of which are variations on the same basic theme, but I picked this one with Mu Tian Ming because it was originally posted to promote an exhibit on Mucha's influence on Japanese manga artists, thus bringing the conversation full circle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Michelangelo: The Creation of Adam (c. 1512)
Huo Shi Ming Huang desires god-like powers and here he gets his wish, bringing life to.... Lin Xue Ya?? No way this won't backfire on him, hahaha. Shout out to Xing Hai, Ba Wang Yu, and Hua Wu Zong as the attending "angels".
(As an aside, this is at least the third time this particular painting has been referenced in media originally written by Gen Urobuchi, the first two being Madoka Magica and Rusty Rabbit, where they are mentioned directly in-text as opposed to extracanonical material. I can't decide if it's funnier if Pili did this on purpose or if it's just a coincidence.)

Freedom and Interaction: How Tumblr Outshines as a Public Sphere in the Digital World
In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, social media platforms have become essential spaces for public discourse and interaction. Among these platforms, Tumblr stands out for its unique ability to create a true public sphere—one where open dialogue thrives, free from the constraints of curated feeds and algorithm-driven content.
But what exactly defines a true public sphere?
According to Kruse et al. (2018), public sphere is a space where individuals engage in rational discourse, characterized by three key elements: unrestricted access to information, equal and protected participation, and the absence of institutional influence, particularly economic.
Equal and Protected Participation
Tumblr distinguishes itself by providing semi-anonymity, allowing users to create pseudonymous accounts and engage without the constraints of their real-world identities (Hillman et al., 2014). This is especially valuable for individuals from marginalized groups, such as LGBTQ+ communities, racial minorities, or those with dissenting opinions. Furthermore, Tumblr’s decentralized culture ensures no single voice dominates discussions, making it a more egalitarian platform for diverse participation.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, Facebook, where real identities are required and social conformity often prevails, may discourage users from engaging in sensitive or controversial topics due to concerns about professional or social consequences. Moreover, the influence of Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and influencers on Facebook can steer discussions toward commercial or mainstream interests, as their opinions tend to carry more weight(Lin & Huang, 2024).
Tumblr media
Absence of Institutional Influence
Tumblr's structure sets it apart as a public sphere largely free from institutional control, especially in political discourse. Platforms like Facebook use algorithms that prioritize content through paid promotions, steering political discussions toward commercial or governmental interests. In fact, there have been concerns about their impact on democratic institutions,  particularly during the 2016 U.S. Election, where micro-targeted political ads influenced political opinions and conversations (Aierken, 2022; U.S. Government Publishing Office, 2020).
Tumblr media
In contrast, Tumblr's emphasis on user-driven content creates an environment where grassroots content rises to the top. This assembled through algorithmic interventions and practices of sharing and appropriation, fosters a more democratic, unfiltered space (Pilipets & Paasonen, 2022).
Unlimited Access to Information
Tumblr media
Tumblr’s open and decentralized structure fosters equitable access to information. Users freely share a diverse range of content—whether personal thoughts, art, social commentary, or political opinions—without being heavily filtered by algorithms or dictated by paid promotions. This organic approach ensures that users are not limited to narrowly tailored feeds or confined by algorithmic echo chambers. It encourages public conversations that are less controlled by corporate agendas, facilitating the freer exchange of ideas that Kruse deems essential for a true public sphere.

(Gonzalez-Lima et al., 2014< a i=2>)。
(Riha et al., 2005 a> a>)。
< /span>
< /span>).Rojas et al., 2012a)。
Rojas et al., 2012b)。
/span>Huang et al., 20112)。
ミトコンドリア呼吸を刺激する効果的なメカニズムは、ニューロンの酸化代謝エネルギー容量を増加させ、酸化損傷を軽減することで神経変性を防ぎます (Wen et al., 2011< a i=2>)。シトクロムオキシダーゼのアップレギュレーションによるATP生成能力の増加により、神経代謝エネルギーとバイゲノム反応、抗アポトーシスシグナル伝達、DNA修復、マイトジェンシグナル伝達、軸索の発芽、シナプス形成、脳由来神経栄養因子の増強など、複数の二次的な利益が生じます。 (Martijn および Wiklund、2010; Gomes et al.、2012; Poteet et al.、2012; Rojas and Gonzalez-Lima、2013 ; Xuan 他、2014)。ミトコンドリア呼吸を生体内上方制御する低用量のメチレンブルーと近赤外線は、神経変性を特徴とする複数のモデル系で同様の神経保護効果を示します。これらには、神経毒性のモデルが含まれます (Zhang et al.、2006; Rojas et al.、2008、2009a)、虚血 (Yip et al.、2011; Watts 他、2013; Auchter 他、2014; Rodriguez et al.、2014)、神経外傷 (Bittner et al.、2012) >; Oron 他、2012; Quirk 他、2012Xuan 他、2013Riha et al.、2011< /span>)。ウェン他、2011 年) ; Rojas et al.、2009b)、パーキンソン病 (Auchter et al.、2014; Callaway et al.、2002)、アルツハイマー病 (; b、Wrubel 他al.、2007a; ゴンザレス=リマとブルシェイ、2004; Callaway et al ., 2004)、神経認知および感情障害 (Zhang et al.、2014; ; Shen 他、2013;

Last night, I attended the 2023 TMAF Chamberfest II performance at the National Concert Hall in Taiwan. The performance was a collaboration between “master” musicians who are principals, associate principals, or professors in national orchestras from various countries, and emerging young musicians.
The concert was divided into two parts, featuring a total of eight pieces. I particularly enjoyed “A. Dvořák: String Quartet №12 in F major, ‘American’, Op.96” performed by Ben Hong, the current associate principal cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, alongside two young violinists, Chieh-An Yu and Hsin Chien, and a young violist, Lukas Shrout.
Additionally, I admired the performance of “F. Schubert: String Quintet in C major, Op.956”, which was led by Mark Kosower, principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and featured two young violinists, Risa Hokamura and Chin Chien, a young violist, Bill Ko, and a young cellist, Natalie Lin.
My appreciation for their performances stems from the way the musicians immersed themselves in the melodies, which was evident from their natural bodily rhythms during the performance. In particular, the delicacy of Risa Hokamura’s violin playing left me profoundly moved.
However, the highlight of the evening for me was the final piece, “L. Spohr: Nonet in F Major, Op.31”, performed by Hsin-Yun Huang, currently a faculty member at the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music, along with young violinist Minami Yoshida, young cellist I-Chang Edison Liu, young double bass player Logan Nelson, young flutist Shuyu Yang, young oboist Yan Yin Lai, young clarinetist Yoshihiro Okuyama, young bassoonist Yu Chung, and young horn player James Picarello.
This was the only piece during the concert that had me smiling from beginning to end. Firstly, the team demonstrated incredible harmony. The musicians weren’t just focused on the music scores in front of them or lost in their own melodies with closed eyes. Instead, I frequently observed them exchanging smiles and looks of affirmation with their partners, seamlessly passing the melody to one another. This high-level performance had me completely absorbed. It gave me the same feeling I had when I saw the very young Japanese violinist Hina Maeda perform in Taiwan at the end of February this year. The exceptional performance by each member of this team made the experience thoroughly enjoyable.
Lastly, I am very much looking forward to your 2023 TMAF All-Star Concert at the National Concert Hall in Taiwan on August 9!

i found the full list on douban. anyone who's interested can take a look at this original post here. i was right, yu hewei is in top 10 (i guessed 5 right in the top 10 in fact: jin dong, zhang ruoyun, hu ge, zhang yi, yu hewei)
this list is updated till april 25, 2025, so it's super current.
the unit for the 2nd column in the op is thousand million. and it's cumulative views instead of average per drama, so i know technically, the more dramas you filmed, the more advantage you have. the percentage in the last column means the percentage of being the 1st lead. otherwise, you are 2nd lead.
to be fair, some actors with high viewership was omitted because they have not taken any new projects for a few years. some other actors are taken out of the list due to controversy on the accuracy of the data. so this list is by no means a complete summary of the actor situation in c-ent, BUT, it's still good for comparative purpose.
#1. 550 thousand million views - jin dong (15 dramas)
#2. 380 - zhang ruoyun (9)
#3. 340 - hu ge (3) = zhao youting (5) = feng shaofeng (10)
#6. 330 - zhang yi (10)
#7. 320 - luo jin (16) = ren jialun (18)
#9. 300 - lin gengxin (5) = yu hewei (10)
#11. 290 - chen xiao (16)
#12. 280 - huang jingyu (12) = xu kai (15)
#14. 260 - lu yi (7)
#15. 240 - chen jianbin (7)
#16. 230 - zhong hanliang (5) = yang yang (6)
#18. 220 - huang xuan (9) = wu lei (10) = bai jingting (11) = tong dawei (13)
$22. 210 - chen weiting (7)
#23. 200 - pan yueming (14) = zhu yawen (7)
#25. 190 - lei jiayin (6) = xiao zhan (7) = li xian (7) = zhang luyi (9)
#29. 180 - wang kai (6) = zeng shunxi (12) = zhang binbin (11)
#32. 170 - wang yibo (8) = cheng yi (9)
#34. 150 - huang xiaoming (8) = chen baoguo (5)
36. 140 - dou xiao (8) = qin hao (12)
38. 130 - zhu yilong (6) = yang xuwen (10)
40. 120 - luo yunxi (9) = wang hedi (9) = bai yu (12) = zhang jiayi (15) = zhang guoli (6)
45. 110 - guo jingfei (11) = hou minghao (12)
47. 100 - ou hao (13)
48. 90 - zhang wanyi (9) = nie yuan (8)
50. 80 - guo qilin (5) = song weilong (9) - ding yuxi (10) - zhang linghe (10)
54. 70 - chen zheyuan (11) = wang yang (7)
56. 60 - chen xingxu (9) = zhang xincheng (11)
58. 50 - chen feiyu (5)
59. 40 - jing boran (4)
i have no idea so many of these so called young popular actors/traffic stars are doing so badly in terms of viewership LOLLOLOL...i think we often forget about the fact that the vast majority of people don't go online every day and express how much they like an actor/a show.
you know...i know zhang luyi is a reputable actor, but i never have any solid idea on how popular he is. i always just assumed that he'd be ranked somewhere in the middle in terms of popularity because of his lack of social media presence.
but this rank thing wowed me (thanks to the douban users who are so into stats). it is the online streaming viewership rank for male actors' shows from 2017 to present, and only shows where the actor is the 1st or 2nd lead are included. and zly ranked 27 which i think is pretty high, and it definitely should be considered as top tier.
he actually ranked higher than some super popular young actors and/or traffic stars. can you believe he ranked higher than #31? i'm so shocked.
Tumblr media
so being traffic stars really means nothing than winning online fan wars. all that social media popularity really means sh*t when it comes to if people will actually stream your shows LOLLOLLOL
i will go find the fully list on douban. i'm sure yu hewei ranks even higher (maybe he's in top 10).
