Lucius did not care for being in Diagon Alley, but sometimes it was necessary. That is what brought him today, stepping out of a shop that he was doing business with, that he stopped in his steps and found himself jarring forward when a body collided into his back. The blonde quickly turns around to face a young creature, knowing about most that were not pureblood.

"You should watch where you are going," a coldness to his tone.

Most days allowed for Pandora to sit behind the desk and study cursed dark magic items, but not today. She was busy doing inventory, parchment in hand and a quill, moving around the shop to check off what was there. It wasn't her favourite thing to do, but it had to be done.

Her attention was pulled in another direction when the door chimes went, and she glanced around a shelf to find a stranger standing there.

"Welcome to Cobb and Webb's, how can I help you?"

There were many a strange sight inside Dystyl Phalanges, but this, today, was by far the most bizarre Amy had seen all summer. She had waited behind a Hebridean bone wardrobe for twenty minutes now, not noticing as patrons came and went, puzzled that they couldn’t find the sole shop worker in the store to help them with their purchase. At last, once they had all given up, Amy saw her opportunity. She leapt out from behind the wardrobe, beaming goofily at the rockstar.

“Can I help you with something, Mr. Deeth?” Amy shouted over her thumping heart.

As a rule, Leo didn’t have many friends. Friends would involve vulnerability and also less trust issues. But he had Lorcan. He couldn’t exactly pinpoint when he’d given in and decided the risk of getting hurt was worth the friendship, but Lorcan was without a doubt Leo’s best friend. 

He also wasn’t entirely sure when he became the sort of person who had bi-monthly friendship dinners, but here they were. It was Leo’s turn to host and he’d actually managed to make beef wellington without screwing something up. He was pretty proud all things considered.

“Let yourself in!” He called as Lorcan knocked. “I’m in the kitchen!”

Now that he’d finally started feeling a little more like himself, a little more like the kid he’d been once, it was time to restart his campaign. Anyone who had the misfortune sharing a Common Room with him in a good mood would recognize the stack of pamphlets and the glint in his eyes. The weather was good, Koda had her favorite toy, and Ajax had a mission.

“Free Nessie!” Ajax insisted, practically shoving a pamphlet into the man’s hand. “She deserves to have a home not overrun by tourists. Why else do you think no one’s seen her in ages? She’s shy, she just needs somewhere quiet!”

Lorcan, d’Eath, Lo I can’t believe how many times you manage to work in referring to yourself as “Bat Daddy” in your life, honestly.

I’ve never sent one either. This is harder than it looks thank you for sen I don’t know what to say Or received, actually. Which probably sounds sad or I’m not meant to say Thea is too busy describing flirting techniques to Reg for me to ask but I’ve never cared bef before. I don’t really know what to say either. I mean 

Thank you. (I decided to start a new line. Seemed less messy. Believe it or not, structure is actually one of my strengths, despite all evidence to the contrary). For sending me that, I mean. 

You’re not a monster. A monster isn’t—you’re not born a monster or made a monster or even one because of something terrible you do. It’s choosing to do it again and again and to buy into it. ( And of course I’m not afraid of you. Exasperated, maybe, but not afraid. Fangs or not, I’ve met real monsters you call yourself Bat Daddy. I’ve met worse. Better ways to refer to themselves, though. Usually just “I”. Surprisingly effective, actually. )

This is alarmingly messy and clearly not my forte and I am going to send this before I set it on fire instead. Thank you. Might have to cash in these vouchers after the next match.

TALK ABOUT LUX AND HIS PASSION FOR PART-HUMAN WIZARDING CIVIL RIGHTS :P

I was expecting this question, though perhaps not as soon as it came. Again, behind a cut because it might get long because lol as if I can keep anything short~

I’m going to link to this post before I start because it’s valid and because I genuinely think that, even in a next gen game, it’s something that’s likely still going to be present. Perhaps not to the same degree because people learn over time and the generations that follow tend to notice and correct the mistakes of those that come before them. But I imagine it’s still something that exists within the Wizarding world at large, as people are always going to be apprehensive to engage with things (be they individuals, groups, or ideas) that they don’t understand or that they’ve been taught to avoid. Although I like to think that Harry’s generation, after being taught by Lupin (werewolf; great guy) and Hagrid (half giant; cool dude), would teach their kids to not take everything at face value and to be more accepting to those whom they themselves might have perceived as dangerous or threatening in some way, there’s likely to still be a lot of prejudice against individuals who just don’t seem to fit into a categorical definition of “normal.”

Lux, in having grown up with the knowledge of his dad being a half-vampire and of being around individuals like him, wouldn’t think anything of having a hag around for dinner or a werewolf babysitter. He wouldn’t bat an eyelash. He was brought up to be accepting of all kinds and, I suppose, in that respect he’s very lucky. There’s a chance that Lorcan sat him down before he went to Hogwarts and explained to him that not everyone had the same upbringing, that not everyone who he’d meet would be as inclusive, and that he shouldn’t worry about what other people might say. Lux, in response, would’ve nodded and smiled before going on his way without a second thought. Surely nobody would be that bad?

“What’s it like to have a vampire for a dad?”

“Does he drink your blood?” 

“Have you ever found a dead body in your house?” 

“How do you even sleep at night? I’d be scared that I’d get attacked when I wasn’t paying attention.”

“Aren’t you worried he might hurt you? Isn’t that what vampires do?” 

“How did the Ministry even allow a vampire to adopt a kid? I thought there were laws against that.”

Those are some of the questions I imagine Lux heard (and maybe still does, at times) during his first few days at Hogwarts. An eleven year old kid, who has only ever known care and happiness and contentment with his slightly dysfunctional yet loving adopted family, being asked whether his dad - one of the nicest and most caring people he’s ever met - has ever hurt him. All because he isn’t fully human. Would anyone else have been asked questions like that upon being met for the first time? How common would it have been to strike up a conversation and be asked whether your family abuse you? Lux would’ve been subjected to the deep-seated fear and prejudice from his very first day at school. Not really a good way to kick off the best years of your life, but certainly a wake up call to something being extremely wrong.

It would’ve struck something in Lux. I doubt he was really aware of how serious it was until he faced it himself, but once he saw how bad things were? He’d have been impassioned and inspired to face it with as much opposition as he could. I’m talking educating people in whatever ways he could, be that answering their (frankly hurtful and insensitive) questions with sincerity and honesty or by getting into loud debates with naysayers that I’m sure escalated into physical altercations at times. He’s small but he’s a little firecracker when he gets going - be warned. He’d have been quick to invite his friends to meet his dad as soon as possible, just to show them that Lorcan wasn’t the caricatured villain that stories had likely painted him as, that he’s just a regular guy who makes terrible jokes and who loves his family more than anything. He also would’ve invited anyone who he knew had negative thoughts (and probably their parents too, since they’d have had to learn that attitude from somewhere) over on the platform before or after school, to introduce them to Lorcan and prove to them that he wasn’t some bloodsucking fiend but a genuinely good person just trying to get by like everyone else. The proof is hard to deny when it’s right in front of you.

As he’s gotten older, Lux has definitely immersed himself within the political side of things. He’s not marching around with flags and banners or anything but he’s done his research and he’s ready to take on anyone who might still have negative things to say. Whenever there are stirrings within the part-human community regarding their basic rights, Lux will inform himself and get involved. Because it’s the right thing to do and because he knows from personal experience that these people deserve what everyone else has, that they shouldn’t be brushed off or ignored because something about them doesn’t fit the “normal” standard or because some idiot who has no clue has decided to get a bit power hungry. I’m not sure where the Ministry stands on the matter but if there’s even a whiff of repression, Lux is ready to throw down. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, no matter what, and nothing will change if people accept what’s fed to them and refuse to challenge the masses just because it might get a bit difficult. His part-human dad taught him that.

Ahem, as promised... Do you think D'eath is Lorcan's legal name? Or did he change it somewhere along the way for stage purposes? Has he ever killed anyone? How does he feed now? Like, does he use animals, blood bags, or some kind of live donor clinic? Was one of his parents a vampire? Or was he turned and it just didn't totally work? Was his mum bitten while she was pregnant? Does he have any vampire friends? Did Lux always know, or did his parents sit him down at a certain age and explain it?

I definitely think it’s a changed name. I know JKR likes to be quirky with her choices but a half-vampire being born with the surname d’Eath is just ridiculous. So, in my personal opinion, it likely got changed from something nondescript and boring once Lor graduated from Hogwarts and began to explore the avenue of music stardom. He’s made it so much his own that I doubt anyone remembers what it was before (and so I don’t have to think of it either, hurrah~)

I don’t think Lor has ever killed anybody. Mostly because he’s a half-vampire, not a full vampire, and so I imagine his need for blood isn’t nearly as essential or all-encompassing. He can survive on regular food for a while without blood becoming a factor at all. I guess this also ties in with the next question, re: feeding. I imagine that any type of blood will suffice, so animal blood bought from the local butchers works just fine. He probably mixes it with other food and drink items to lessen the gore factor, unless he’s alone and can’t be bothered to prepare anything. 

The half-vampire label has always bugged me and I’ve put so much thought into how one becomes a half-vampire, it’s insane. But I believe that yes, his mother likely got bitten/turned while she was pregnant. There’s a very good chance that it triggered his birth, since I imagine being turned would both cause her body to die, which in turn kickstarted the labour process. The vampire blood was likely the only thing that kept Lor from dying, which I’m sure is some form of irony. Mostly I try not to think too hard about his origins because it’s confusing and would take up way too much time. :P 

Lorcan definitely has vampire friends. The number of half-vampires in the world is likely quite small, but we know from canon that vampires do exist within society. I’ve always felt like he’d be a bit of an activist for “half breed” rights, since there’s still some persecution from Wizarding society in Harry’s time, so it was undoubtedly worse when Lor was growing up. Becoming famous likely broke through the glass ceiling in terms of vampire visibility within society, and it definitely gave him a platform to call things into consciousness. It only makes sense that he’d know other vampires, and he likely has a handful of close friends who are vampires.

Lux definitely knew from a young age. Although I imagine Lorcan’s career isn’t quite as prominent now as it once was, what with music going through its various fads and phases (that he usually finds some way to fit into regardless), he’s still very much a part of Wizarding consciousness, and so it would’ve only been a matter of time before Lux found out if he hadn’t been told. Lorcan and Enrica both would’ve wanted to explain things to him in their own way. It was never especially obvious as he was growing up that his dad was a half-vampire, since I mentioned above that he never would’ve flaunted his eating habits in front of Lux, and so he certainly wouldn’t have reached the conclusion himself. I imagine they sat him down when he was old enough to understand, perhaps around seven or eight, and explained things to him. As most kids without prejudice are, Lux likely nodded and then asked if he could go outside to play. It’s just a thing that he’s always known (or at least can remember knowing) and so it’s never been a big deal to him. He was likely very surprised and more than a little hurt when he realised upon attending school that not everyone was as accepting (since I imagine there are still ‘Guidelines for the Treatment of Non-Wizard Part-Humans’ leaflets handed out by the Ministry, plus books on the subject in the Hogwarts library) and you can bet he’s passionate as hell when it comes to part-human Wizarding civil rights. That’s a whole other topic though~

Lucius could see that his words were not hitting a certain chord and he was finding himself over the conversation. "I care about a world where I don't have to hide." He would always have a some type of power, but that was because he built it around him. "I do have to say, it's getting late and I have to get home to my wife."

Lorcan couldn’t deny that Lucius had a point — he wouldn’t ever dare leave the Wizarding world. He couldn’t go to any popular kind of Muggle place. But he also caught onto how Lucius said the world ‘muggles’. “You care about a world where you can have control and power. I don’t want to hide, but I also don’t want to be apart of that. You and your friends may be able to fool other vampires, who are desperate, but you’re not going to get to me,” he said. Lorcan realized just how dangerous this was as he was speaking, but he couldn’t stop himself.

Lucius knew this conversation was drawing to an end, it was how he wished for it to finish on that mattered. "You may see it as not hiding amongst those with magic, but we both know, you would not dare to walk amongst the muggles." It killed him to use that term, but he had to be political. "That is fine if you desire that life. I know some that don't." Azure hues look Lorcan in the eyes. "I care about a world where we don't have to hide."

Lorcan couldn’t help but raise his eyebrows, well aware of the Malfoy family’s affiliations with the Death Eaters. He didn’t comment on it, though, not wanting to incite Lucius’s wrath. “That’s not a decision I need to make, because I am proud of myself. I try to be cautious, but I do not hide. It would be impossible to hide because, you know—” he paused, opening his mouth and gesturing to his fangs. “—I have to admit, I’m a bit surprised that you’re showing care about this . . . About me.” He didn’t actually think that Lucius cared, but he wasn’t going to say that.

"Don't you get tried of living in the shadows?" Lucius was curious. Even having to hide who they were to the muggle world was itself exhausting. "I'm merely an individual having a conversation. I'm not one of those who are so narrow minded." There were many that suspected that he was a death eater and he had no issue alluding otherwise. "I mean, you have to decide if you want to be proud of who you are and continue to hide."

Lorcan shrugged. “I’ve been living in the shadows my entire life, it’s not that big of a burden,” he said nonchalantly, well-aware of what Lucius was getting at. He would not let himself be manipulated. “I can imagine that if a Death Eater were to approach me, try to get me to join their side, and I refused . . . Well, wouldn’t they want to kill me? Seems like no matter what I do, there’s always going to be someone who wants me dead. I have no intention of giving them what they want.” He smiled at the blond man, though it wasn’t a genuine one.

Lucius would not voice it, but he was one that was not fond of vampires or half ones, or any being that wasn't a pureblood. His only concern was that the Dark Lord was interested to increase his army and he would do what was expected. "It isn't safe for ones like you." A statement. "There are those that would give nothing more than to see you dead. That is why they can't no about you. Must be tiring living in the shadows." The wizard alluding to mudbloods.

“Not many people are fans of vampires—or half ones. I’ve been caught off guard by nasty jinxes before from people who do not like my kind,” Lorcan said in defense of himself. He was more worried about Lucius would do to him because of his own allegiance with the Dark Lord, but he couldn’t say that. He darted his eyes around, unsure of what was going to happen now. Was Lucius going to ask him about his own allegiances? Lorcan would say no. He was not going to get involved in any of the Death Eaters’ business.

Lucius was curious what the creature was going to do. There was no use in calling them a wizard, they were not that, wield magic, perhaps.
