nova hadn't been able to use her magic for the last 32 hours. she'd be lying if she said she wasn't panicking, even if just a little. stella told her to see daichi, but she was being stubborn. why would she go see daichi when he'd just scold her for not taking care of herself. it's not her fault that after, what, a thousand years (had it already been that long?), she was a little more than tired of taking care of herself. it felt aimless, useless, boring, monotonous.

she hadn't taught in maybe a couple hundred years. she'd lost track, hell she'd lost herself. nova could feel her magic bubbling below the surface of her skin, but instead of the rolling boil she was used to, it was more of a... simmer.

"Rita's working late tonight so she gave me strict instructions to only have respectful friends over which is why you're the only one here," Luis joked as he looked in the fridge and grabbed two sodas for them. He had been drinking a lot the night before and the thought of knocking back another beer made him nauseous. He glanced over his shoulder to make sure Nova was looking at the TV before he wrapped his hand around each soda and focused so he could make them even colder, stopping right before they got icy. Luis was sure that if his high school had been about teaching magic then he probably would've been top of his glass. He handed one can to Nova before plopping back down on the couch. "So how was the day in the life of the best author around? You know I started re-reading your book today. Like actually reading and not skimming. If that isn't real love, I don't know what is."

Nat circled the chair she distinctly remembered leaving her coat draped over. It was clearly not there, but she found herself making a pass one last time just in case. The thought of trudging through campus without it made her feel the same creeping sense of being exposed. Spotting someone nearby to the chair she'd trusted to take care of her coat, she tapped them on the shoulder. "Hey, sorry. Uh, you didn't happen to see a coat lying around here, did you?"

After the fog had lifted, Naz had felt the urge to be in water growing stronger each day. It had been bad before but it felt worse recently, like she was going to go mad if she didn't soak in the bath or at the pools a few times a day. Before her shift at the country club started, she knew she had to go and get a proper swim in. She arrived around lunch time before diving into the water, letting her tail extend out and splash under the water.

It was funny to think that she never liked the ocean when she was younger. She was terrified of what was lurking under the surface. Now she had become the thing she should be afraid off. The siren got lost in her thoughts and didn't notice someone else nearby. She dived under the water and came up, almost face to face with a beautiful woman. A squeak escaped her parted lips, a hand coming to rest against her heart.

"Good lord, I'm so sorry I just screamed at you," Naz said, quickly apologising. "I didn't see you there."

Wyatt let out a quiet chuckle, his gaze narrowed slightly. The girl's attempt at deception was commendable, if unconvincing. He didn't need heightened senses or his detective training to see through her facade; subtlety clearly wasn't her strong suit.

A faint smirk tugged at his lips as he leaned forward slightly, voice low and tinged with amusement. "Magic certainly has its perks—fixing life's little inconveniences, turning on the lights, as doing so by hand is barbaric. But…" He paused deliberately, eyes flickering briefly to an intense amber-gold, letting his werewolf side through momentarily before returning them smoothly to their normal brown. "We usually make a point to keep these things hidden from humans."

"What kind are they..." Nova asked slowly. She couldnt really comprehend. But she didn't have time to react though as she heard the words like magic.Nova began to stammer hearing the words.

"The magic of coincidence." Nova said trying to laugh it off, as if the other was crazy. It was clear to Nova she barely understood the etiquette of the supernatural, just seeing what sticks. Nova brushed her hair lightly before making a hand wave. She tried to change the subject. "So why bring important papers to place like this instead of a library?" She asked sincerely. "Afraid of the dewey decimal system."

Nova said quickly, unaware of what she walked into withthe mysterious guy.

a gleeful laugh bubbles past nova's lips. she knows she asked for this, but the eager sight of sully dropping to his knees makes her feel bashful. she grins and looks down at him with big brown eyes. "just like that," she says with another laugh. "you've always been so pretty."

Jacob gave a casual smirk, running his fingers briefly through his hair. "I reckon it’s all in how you style it. Too many spikes and people might get the wrong idea." Truthfully, he'd never given much thought to his hair; the colour, he knew, was his mum’s gift, while everyone said the rest came straight from his dad. "Cheers for the compliment, though," he added lightly, leaning back comfortably in the chair. "Just here for a quick trim, really. Maybe catch a bit of gossip while I’m at it."

Nova was surprised by the brave voice. Nova looked at the strawberry blond with wide eyes. She found herself stunned on how good his hair looked. "Wow." Nova said. She cleared her throat. "Red suits you very well. I'm just a bit....surprised." Nova said running her hands through her hair. "I feel like black and red makes me look too edgy."Nova said. "Do I look cool at least?" Nova asked nervously.

"You're not supposed to call me on my bluff before I even get a chance to try and come up with something on the fly. That's just ungentlemanlike behavior." She took his extended hand and stood, brushing dirt from the back of her pants, grinning at him as she nudged a box in his direction with the toe of his boot. "But, I have been told I'm a great bullshitter, so give me until we get to the women's center, and I'll knock your socks off. Probably."

If Nova truly was the gentleman that he so often claimed to be, it would reason that he'd be putting forth more of an effort, helping the girl that was creeping across the campus sidewalk rather than what he was doing — standing and watching the event unfold, features coated in clear amusement. Were they really to be blamed though? There was something undeniably entertaining and adorable in watching her chase after items that they would have merely considered a loss the instant they'd taken flight. "Sounds like this group of people is a group of assholes." Not that he was seeming much better in that instant — especially not when the offer slips from her lips. "Worth my while, hmm?" It's clear that interest has been piqued, brows lifting and tongue pressing into their cheek, as if they might be awaiting further explanation. Nevertheless, his hand extends, an offer to help her back onto her feet and ultimately, with the completion of her task. "I accept. If only to see how much of a liar you are." As if delighting them were really all that difficult.

I wanna go a bit full-circle with a post I did right after the first two episodes of ‘Fionna and Cake’ dropped - about the nature of Simon Petrikov’s sense of identity. And more specifically, with how his titular episode centered around the ways his deteriorating mental state and the new context of his life has really torn away at everything Simon used to define himself as. 

Because Simon Petrikov used to be a lot of things. He was an antiquarian and an archaeologist, a man deeply fascinated by the concept of Magic and the supernatural in a mundane world that ridiculed him for it at every turn, an adventurous outdoorsman, and a deeply caring and fatherly man.

But when we meet him at the start of “Simon Petrikov”, he has lost all the passion for his job - especially as he now has to perform it basically as a living museum exhibit. He is now stuck in a word filled with Magic and feels like the only mundane thing in it. He is unable to handle the sort of dangers you would find in an Oooian camping trip. And he made a little girl cry.

And there’s one more thing Simon used to define his identity as, and that is the one he ended up clinging to more than anything in that one episode, even though it was just as decimated as every other facet of his old identity, and the one that ends up jump-starting the plot. And that is being Betty Grof’s other half.

So now, looking back at this second episode at the end of the series, it really feels appropriate that throughout his adventures Simon managed to rediscover these old elements of his personality, that all these aspects of his identity managed to get reinforced and validated…

For most of the series he was basically doing his old job again - travelling around, trying to discover and uncover an ancient artifact.

And you can really see how he regains his excitement for research. 

And by the end of the show, he ends up really rediscovering a passion for his work (and also realized that this Living Museum Exhibit set-up is not conducive for his mental health, which is also a step in the right direction).

 

And he gets to show-off his understanding of Magic

And by the end of the show, Simon doesn’t feel like such an outsider in Ooo anymore. Probably helped by the fact his cellphone connection with Fionna gives him that little connection to 'normalcy' he was missing.

And he got to go on an adventure again, and handle it better than his Camping Trip Funtimes with Finn. Probably because he was around Adventure Novices Fionna and Cake, who were a bit closer to his ‘level’ than a crazy-seasoned adventurer like Finn

And by the end of the show, you can see him seeking thrills on his own terms.

And his ability be kind and fatherly and comforting was validated both by his constant interactions with Fionna - who isn’t a child, but is still a younger person who often needed his emotional support

And also by a very grim reminder of how truly important he was for Marcy.

And by the end of the show, he has managed to make a connection with Astrid, despite them starting out on such a sour note.

But 'Simon Petrikov, Betty Grof's beloved'? That aspect of himself did get some validation, via him getting to share their love story with Fionna

But it was not entirely validated, was it? That was the one aspect of himself that was actually challenged - the one part of himself was clinging to like a lifeline when he felt like he was falling apart, that was the one part of himself that he had to both recontextualize in his head and eventually realized he had to finally let go off…
