VIOLENT ACTION STARTERS

It was just a normal day, nothing dreary or spectacular about it. But the tension? That was palpable. Such was the case whenever the two opposing forces we're sharing a space, no matter how open. It was a planned meeting, something they had agreed on. All of it was leading to this, leading to a confrontation between men who couldn't bare to even look upon each other anymore.

But, it was so much more than that. It wasn't that they hated each other. They loved each other once, as much as two friends could. Corvus had called them soulmates platonically, the most he had ever opened up about what he felt for Elijah. And yet... Elijah had pulled back. Rejected the notion until he cut him off entirely one day. He didn't know why he did it and it only took his days to regret the choice, but there was no turning back. Once he broke Corvus' trust, there was no way he would ever get it back. So, they decidedly made each other's lives hell instead.

Which brought them to today. Armed as they always were, Corvus with his sword still hidden in his cane and Elijah with his knife. It was a short tense discussion that ended in furious words, the ever patient genius even lashing out in a fury of insults. He slipped up, slipped out of his mind, and acted simply on instinct.

When Elijah shoved Corvus down, he felt a tiny rush of power when the man fell to the ground. A high that blinded him to the action as the blade of Corvus sword was swiftly drawn from it's sheath and swung to his ankle. He let out a cry of pain before collapsing to the ground beside him. The blood was gushing from his sock, from under his pantleg, but he couldn't focus on it.

" You can knock me down all you want, " Elijah hissed in his direction, " Nothing will stop me. "

Threats, that was all he could fight back with. The truth was that he didn't want to fight Corvus. He wanted to be punished, tormented for all he had done. He couldn't live with what he had said to Corvus all those years ago. No, it had to be like this. But, he was just stubborn enough to go down fighting.

Night Talk

Summary: After another argument with his brother, Elijah takes a walk to cool off and meets a mysterious woman

(The reader is 18+ and uses she/her pronouns. I wrote this imagining the reader as a woman of color.)

Elijah was furious. You could see it by the way he walked and the tenseness of his body. His large form was always somewhat tense-looking in his usual suited attire, but now he was extremely rigid and stiff, like a building. He was pissed off beyond belief.

He could feel his blood boiling and his fists kept clenching and unclenching, wanting, craving some kind of violence. He wanted to hurt something or someone, more specifically his brother, Klaus. He could feel the veins beginning to show upon his face and he quickly willed them away. He was in public and didn’t want to scare anyone. 

Another scheme, another death, more enemies, he thought, clenching and unclenching. Why must you be this way, brother?

He didn’t know where he was walking to. He walked past all of the bars in the quarter, even Rousseau’s, not wanting to burden Cami with another of his family’s troubles. Niklaus does that enough, he mentally grumbled. 

He looked up to the dark night sky and sighed as he spotted the half moon. Am I wasting my time with Niklaus, he wondered. He stared at the moon, deep in thought for so long that he didn’t notice that he wasn’t alone.

“It’s really pretty, right,” a voice asked him. 

The voice brought him back from his thinking and he turned his head to the left and saw sitting on a bench a few feet from him, was a woman. She was looking at him with beautiful (E/C) eyes and a shy smile. 

“Right,” he exhaled after a silent moment, caught off guard by her beauty. “It is.” 

It took him a second to realize where he was. A park not that far from the cemetery. He rarely ever came around this area, wanting to respect and not disturb the witches of the city and their ancestors.

“Something about it...it’s so calming,” the woman continued, looking away from him and up to the sky.

“Yes, it is quite relaxing,” he agreed with her. He put his clenched fists in his pockets and slowed down his breathing, before making his way to her. Hopefully my face is fine, he thought sitting down next to her. 

They sat in comfortable silence for a minute, looking up at the moon before she spoke again. “Has it calmed you down?” 

“Excuse me?”

“The moon. It’s calmed you down, right? You were really pissed off over there. I’m just making sure you’re okay. I don’t wanna be around an angry vampire.”

Surprised at what she said, Elijah looked at her speechless, before quickly schooling his features into the usual calm and neutral expression he usually wore in front of people he didn’t know or didn’t trust. “What makes you think I’m a vampire?”

“Are you serious?” the woman asked, eyebrows raised in disbelief at his question. She raised her hand and pointed at his body, “The whole dark and mysterious man walking at night in a black suit and looking up at the moon?”

He couldn’t help but let out a chuckle at what she said. “I guess I do look suspicious, don’t I?”

“You could be either a vampire or a serial killer?...and this is New Orleans, so the most likely choice is vampire.” 

Impressed by her deduction skills, he nodded his head and let go of some of the neutrality from his face, showing her such a handsome smile, that even in the dark the woman couldn’t help but be mesmerized by it for a second. “You are correct, miss...”

“(Y/N),” she introduced herself, giving him her hand for a handshake. “And you’re Elijah, right?”

Once again, impressed by the woman, he gently held her hand and instead of shaking it like she intended him to do, he placed a sensual kiss on the back of it, making her heart begin to beat faster and making her face feel hot.

“How do you know who I am, (Y/N),” he asked lifting his head from her hand, and looking into her eyes. “You seem to already know who I am-”

“You’re the only original...hell, only vampire that wears a suit constantly and looks and walks with suave and class. It’s not that hard to recognize you even if we’ve never met before.”

Nodding his head at her, he let go of her hand and looked back up at the moon, trying his best not to show that her intelligence was impressing him and making him slightly blush. “You know of my family,.. so you know of my brother, Niklaus?”

“Definitely,” she answered quickly, “I’m sure plenty of people in the Quarter know about him. He makes himself veeerrry known.”

It was from there that they began having the weirdest and yet fascinating conversation that Elijah had had in a while, especially with someone who wasn’t trying to murder him and his family. (Y/N) didn’t reveal that much about herself to him, only telling him that she had been in New Orleans for a long while and had family there. Elijah didn’t mind this though. All he wanted was to hear her voice and look at her beautiful face. 

"What made you so mad anyway?" (Y/N) asked him, squinting her eyes at him in curiosity.

Elijah let out a sigh at the question, hating to think about his brother, and how he has to return to see him again. “Niklaus,” was all he said.

“Oh,” she nodded her head in understanding, looking at him in amusement. “I’ve heard you and your family fight a lot...like a lot-lot.”

“Yes. I caught him in the middle of devising another scheme that will most definitely end in countless bloodshed. His scheming never ends.”

“I’m sorry.” 

He turned his head towards her and saw her (E/C) eyes looking at him with sympathy, and he felt himself beginning to blush again. Beautiful, he thought, quickly turning his gaze back to the moon, hoping she didn’t notice his blushing.

“It’s quite alright, (Y/N). I’ve dealt with him for a long time now. I’ve gotten quite used to it by now. Tonight, my patience had become thin, thinner than it usually is with him.”

“Sorry, your brother’s been an asshole for so long. Thankfully your other siblings’ not like that, right?”

“Yeah,” Elijah chuckled. He suddenly thought about Kol, Rebekah, and Freya and how they were back at the compound and have no other choice but to deal with Klaus and his wrath after their argument. Then his mind went to Hayley and Hope and how they would probably be in another room somewhere, probably Hope’s room, trying to ignore the yelling and arguing of his siblings. If I’m gone any longer, there’ll be absolute chaos, he realized. He looked back to the woman beside him and saw that she was still looking at him. Her gaze made him blush harder, but he ignored it and stood up from the bench.

“I’m terribly sorry (Y/N), but I must leave,” he apologized, straightening his suit and checking for any dirt from the bench. “I fear my siblings will not last long without me there.”

“That’s alright,” she smiled up at him. “It was nice talking to you, Elijah.”

“It was nice talking to you as well, (Y/N),” he told her. He noticed that she was still sitting down and frowned. “Would you like me to walk you home? I hate to leave you here by your lonesome.”

“I’m good. I can take care of myself. You get home to your siblings. Hopefully we’ll meet again.”

“Hopefully.” He smiled at her one last time, before turning around and leaving the park. The whole way back to the compound he kept thinking about (Y/N) and wondered if he would ever see her again. He really hoped he would.

Not just other people, the sight of other people on the subway or bus, walking carefree down the street, lost in their music, emitting auras, and I’m wondering what that music is. Not just music, I miss the stories, the way we gather around a sound as though it’s a flame, the way other sounds, triggering other other sounds, can shatter and send us. Not a sound, but a volume I miss is when you’re at a club or a show, and you’re trying to tell someone something, and you’re conscious of not wanting to shout directly in their ear, since you know a polite whisper will get drowned out by the music, and so you (or, in this case, I) resort to a loud mutter, or you emphasize the most important words and hope they can fill in the rest, or you tiptoe your sentence through the noise, guiding whatever you’re saying in between the quiet spaces of the music. Not music, but a sound I thought about a lot this year was a young Black man killed by the cops, his name was Elijah McClain, and he used to play the violin to comfort stray cats. For its first new show since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia is showcasing the work of self-taught woodcarver Elijah Pierce, whose creations confronted such monumental topics as faith and systemic injustice.

Per a statement, the exhibition—titled “Elijah Pierce’s America”—features more than 100 works, including freestanding carvings, painted bas-reliefs and large-scale scenes. Dated to between 1923 and 1979, the carvings range from allegorical works to meditations on politics and pop culture.

Born to formerly enslaved parents in 1892, Pierce was a “barber by trade and a preacher by calling,” according to the Barnes. He began honing his craft in the late 1920s, when his wife’s reaction to a wooden elephant he’d carved for her birthday inspired him to create an entire miniature zoo, and eventually garnered a reputation as an artist in his Columbus, Ohio, community.

Pierce’s work only received widespread recognition in the later years of his life. He was one of the most famous “outsider” artists of the 1970s and ’80s—a time when many in the art world were interested in individuals who lacked formal training—but has been increasingly overlooked since his death in 1984.

Elijah Pierce’s Slavery Time (c. 1965–70) is based partly on stories from his father’s life.

Nancy Ireson, the Barnes’ chief curator, tells WHYY’s Peter Crimmins that she wasn’t familiar with Pierce until stumbling onto his work a few years ago.

“I was stopped in my tracks when I saw a piece by Pierce in the Columbus Museum of Art,” Ireson says. “It was a moment to think about how we look at art history and ask questions about who gets included.”

Pierce’s carvings, painted in bold colors, often tell stories. The Book of Wood (1932), for instance, consists of seven panels portraying 33 scenes from the life of Jesus. Pierce used the bas-relief project as a visual aid for preaching. Other works, like Nixon Being Driven From the White House (1975), are suggestive of political cartoons.

Describing the carvings on view in the show, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Thomas Hine writes, “The devil fishes for sinners using money, dice, and a scantily clad woman. We see Father Time, shirtless and in shorts, running frantically, his scythe tucked under his arm. We see Richard Nixon being chased by inflation, which looks like a fat and nasty dog.”

Pierce was born on a farm in Mississippi and spent most of his career in Columbus. Some of his work reflects themes from his own life, as well as his family’s history. In a 1974 documentary, the artist said stories shared by his father inspired works like Slavery Time, which presents “a panoramic view of plantation life,” including the beating and sale of enslaved workers, per the National Endowment for the Arts.

“He couldn’t stand all those years of whupping,” Pierce recalled. “My father said he didn’t feel free after the emancipation.”

Elijah Escapes the Mob (1950s) is an autobiographical image inspired by an incident where the police mistook Pierce for a white man’s killer.

Uncle Sam appears at the center of the Slavery Time. The work’s composition is evocative of an American flag, notes the Philadelphia Inquirer, “though here it is showing our nation’s shame, not its pride.”

Another piece included in the exhibition, Elijah Escapes the Mob (1950s), is autobiographical, recalling Pierce’s arrest after police mistook him for a suspect in the killing of a white man.

Carolyn Allport, a friend of Pierce’s who produced the documentary, tells the Guardian’s Nadja Sayej that he combined a deep Christian faith with a sly sense of humor and a commitment to social justice.

“He would have been carving George Floyd or Breonna Taylor today,” she says. “But also, a flower or a story he thought expressed human nature. He was so alive in every way.”

In conjunction with the show, the museum is offering an online class exploring how certain artists are marginalized in narratives about American art history. Lectures will take place every Monday in October.
