In the end it didn't matter what Gen had said or what she didn't say because Violet Upton-Crane's megawatt smile was on, the one that had made her a billion dollars and an American darling.
"Genevieve," Violet said evenly, in the same sort of tone that she always told Gen not to embarrass her. Gen rolled her eyes, her gaze flickering towards Nate with half a scowl on her face. Bad at hiding her feelings? Well Gen supposed that her mom just brought it out in her.
(She could blame her mommy issues for everything, it was so convenient).
"Oh you're not interrupting," Violet said smoothly "After all isn't thanksgiving supposed to be about the company of others," Then she smiled flirtatiously "Especially lovely handsome gentlemen,"
If Gen hadn't wanted to take up smoking before she definitely did now.
Liam raised an eyebrow in Nate's direction, a smirk playing on his lips as he met his brother's eyes - he was well aware of Nate's history with mothers. Though the flirtation wasn't exactly new territory for him, either, he inevitably got some enjoyment out of it being in front of his younger brother. The infallible rivalry between two brothers who had only had competition fostered between them.
Before Nate - or Liam - could retort, Genevieve did, neither brother having noticed her at first. Liam, because he was distracted by her mother and infuriating Nate, and Nate, because he hadn't stopped glaring at Liam for a millisecond since his brother had arrived. Nate gave her a sideways look, his irritation on his face clear - unfortunate, perhaps, considering none of it was directed at her (for once, maybe). "Don't let us interrupt," Nate muttered in response to the invitation, eyes flickering between the pair before returning to his brother, knowing Liam would accept it if only to further piss him off.

There was nothing Artemis loved more than spending the day with her two favorite people. Nate and Grace. Sometimes it was so weird to think of that she hadn’t had them in her life this whole time. Part of Art knew that what she craved, and definitely got covered when she was with them was this pure sense of normalcy. Of escaping into a world where there was no inter species drama or power struggles, or even lots of different species at all. Spotting the pair, Art was grinning from ear to ear as they met on the sidewalk, going right in to steal a hug from Nate. “Hi guys!” she exclaimed, sinking down into a crouch in front of Grace as soon as she had greeted Nate. “How are you sport? You know, I had this great idea coming here. How about we get your uncle Nate to take us for ice cream? Yeah?” she suggested, sending said uncle a teasing look.

CLOSED STARTER FOR @nateblackwood
LOCATION: blackwood foundation meeting room
While Saint Bayrak usually preferred not to make enemies (people were more useful as friends), he couldn’t deny that he and Nate Blackwood had practically been destined to be rivals ever since he accepted the job offer. And if his position didn’t cement their positions on opposite sides of the chess board, then his seat at the Blackwood Foundation Board of Trustees meeting did — a seat to the right of Raymond Sr., the coveted place that his heir and the head of the foundation should have held. Yet as the meeting ended and he bid goodbye to the trustees with the usual niceties, he couldn’t find it within his heart to feel sympathy for Nate. Because the chair had been reserved for the other man from his birth, empty and waiting. And for Nate to trip and stumble before he even sat down? Maybe Saint felt some semblance of pity. But sympathy?
He held no sympathy for failures.
Finished collecting his papers, Saint strode over to the other man, a diplomatic smile on his lips. “Nate Blackwood? I don’t believe we’ve met,” he spoke, extending his hand. “Though I’ve heard much about you from your father.” He kept his tone neutral, leaving Nate to decide if such a statement was a compliment or thinly veiled insult.

Her mom had been talking and to Gen it sounded like the adults from the Peanuts cartoons, she took in absolutely not of it and made occasionally sounds like she was listening. Her father had drifted away from the pair of them, talking what sounded like money with...someone's parents? Some big shot donor? Honestly Gen had no idea and she wasn't about to ask.
"Genevieve, dearest. Are you listening to me?"
"Mhm."
Gen was going to dump her mother on whoever might distract her and probably make a beeline for the food. She was going to absolutely have to whine to her dad about her allowance after this, Gen needed a higher payout for the emotional damage this was wrecking her. Her mouth was half open, an icy excuse us about to fall from her mouth when -
Violet Upton-Crane sensing the slightest hint of a flirtation put on that mega watt smile and flirted (she might have been married but she was still herself) "I have some idea where if you're looking for some company,"
Gen glanced between her mother and realising that god he had to be at least half her age or something. "Mom." She said immediately, the words spilling out before she had a chance to stop them.
who: open when: early on during the thanksgiving dinner where: the commons
There were few events Nate went to at Ogden College without dragging his feet, complaining the entire time. And while this was certainly no exception, he was at least mildly more willing to attend the thanksgiving dinner. He had attended all four years so far, looking for any reason to avoid seeing his family, and honestly, the food? Fucking good. Rich ass school with cash to spare must've figured they could spare some effort for the misfit students left behind on campus for the holiday.
But this year...was different.
He hadn't totally anticipated it, hearing families were invited and not thinking much, considering it didn't change his situation either way. As always, he texted his younger sister (and only his younger sister), confirming he'd be staying on campus for the holiday, and that he'd see her at Christmas (a lie, hopefully, if he could manage to find a way to stay away from the Shaw family again). So when Nate walked in, the sheer amount of families that were there caught him a bit off guard.
Not nearly as off guard as the person currently walking towards him, though.
Nate stood his ground, even if he was slightly blocking the entrance, hands shoved in his pockets while his face grew stormy as he stared at his older brother. "What the fuck are you doing here, Liam?" he said through his teeth once his brother was close enough, making no pretense that he was happy to see him.
Liam offered him a mocking smile, reaching up to clap his younger brother on the shoulder in greeting. "Good to see you too, little brother," he chided, glancing at the person entering the hall behind Nate, brushing past him due to the Shaw brothers currently blocking the entry way, his smile turning charming in a way Nate's never quite managed. "D'you know where we can get a drink?" he asked them conversationally, even potentially flirtatiously, clearly already aware Nate would not be forthcoming with any information.
