The Stucky Library’s Tumblr Search Tutorial (with visual aids!)
Sent an ask and want to know if it was answered?
Looking for an specific concept that isn’t covered by tags?
Want to see every result for a particular subject?
Welcome to The Stucky Library’s Tumblr Search Tutorial!
What you’ll need:
Access to the internet
Your favorite browser
The Stucky Library Tumblr page
Free time: 5-10 minutes - or however much time you have to lose down this rabbit hole
This tutorial also works for mobile users, as long as you use your phone’s browser instead of the Tumblr app.
First things first. There are two ways to use the search function in the Library. We will talk you through both of them, and then you can decide which one works best for you.
1. Sidebar Search
The Library has a nifty sidebar search installed to help facilitate your search for fics. You can find it on the left sidebar and it is marked in blue in the picture below:

You can search for anything you want in the library, but we recommend you use keywords for this.
Are you looking for Canon Divergent AUs? Type divergent into the bar. It will look like this:

The all you have to do is hit enter, and the Library will pull all the posts that mention the word “divergent” for you.
Did you send a request looking for a lost fic and want to know if we found it? You can type any word you remember using in your ask and see if it’s been answered. For example:
Anon 1 from Group Ask 21 sent the following ask:
Hi there! I read this some time ago but forgot the name. Bucky and Steve meet as young boys. At first Winifred, Bucky’s mom, didn’t want Bucky being friends with Steve because she was trying to spare him the heartache in case Steve died as he was sick all the time. Sarah Rogers confronts her. There is a scene where Steve and Bucky are in a church choir but because they are playing, they knock over a candle holder. Also, Winifred receives letters notify her of Bucky’s and Steve’s death.
To check if it was answered, Anon 1 could type any of the following words into the search bar:
young boys
heartache
church
choir
candle holder
They will all pull up the Group Ask 21 post, where the Anon can see that we found their fic.
The same thing works if you’re looking for particular concepts that the Library doesn’t have tags for. For example:
Really want to read fics where they go to carnivals? Type carnival into the search bar and hit enter. Now you have carnival recs to read!
Want fics where they try sexting? Type sexting into the search bar and there you go!
A quick note: while you can combine multiple words, punctuation tends to mess things up. Try looking for Challa instead of T’Challa. Also looking for ‘church choir’ or ‘”church choir”’ makes no difference; the search function will just ignore the “” and look for both words individually, so you will get any post that contains church and choir, but there might not be any posts containing church choir. Similarly wildcards like * or ? don’t work.
If you look at the address bar for any of these searches, this is what you will see it says, like the picture below:
https://thestuckylibrary.tumblr.com/search/sexting

Which brings us to the second way you can do searches on the blog.
2. URL Search
To use this alternate search function, which works great for mobile, you’ll go to the address bar, which is marked in red in the picture below:

Once you’re there, you will click on the URL and type right after .com:
/search/
So now you’ll have this:

Then, all you have to do is add what you are looking for and hit enter. We once again recommend you use keywords for your searches!
You sent an ask about fics where Steve and Bucky adopt teenagers and want to know if it was answered? Type teenager after /search/ and hit enter.
The search will bring up all the Library posts with the word “teenager”, as you can see:

[teenager blog search]
Everything else works the same way as the search bar. Here, all you have to do is type your keyword after /search/, hit enter, and browse fics.
You can try these methods using any and all words you can think of: tropes, kinks, character names, author names, etc. If a post has been published mentioning any of those words, the Library will pull results for you!

For all your 1940s’ supersoldier fic needs
or
how to work the advanced search on ao3
Losing a fic you loved is incredibly frustrating, but it’s happened to all of us. Most of what this blog is doing right now is hunting down fics people have lost or reccing fics that fit a general plot or trope.
Knowing how to search ao3 well makes it a thousand times easier to find both lost fics and general plots/tropes. I use a lot of other resources to find find things for people but I run a fanfic blog so thats not necessary for the average fan. Ao3 searches are the best place to start and all you need nine times out of ten.
I thought that the simplest way to go about this is to walk you guys through a typical fic request search. We’ll start with a search for a specific fic:
Anon is looking for a fic where one or both of the boys is the winter soldier, Peggy and Howard are involved and the brainwashing is pretty intense. Here we go!

Don’t bother typing anything into the search bar yet, just click it while its empty

Hit the edit your search button
This is the fancy super specific advanced search function! All the different searches in here are really helpful in their own way, but the best for finding fics is the work search.

The any field search is super useful . I find its the best for if you can remember a single word from one of the tags or the summary. Theres this one fic which is tagged #BUCKY LOVES BABIES, #BABIES LOVE BUCKY and those tags are seared into my brain for whatever reason, but memory is a strange thing and stuff just goes weird sometimes. Just in case you remember the wording slightly wrong any field can compensate for it most of the time.

For example entering asexuality will bring up anything that mentions asexuality in the title, tags or description. But wait! Theres more!

adding an asterisk* to the term brings up all variations of that word. asexual* will bring up asexual character, asexual, asexuality, asexual steve and so on. injury* will bring up injured, injure, injury, injured steve and so on.
You can also specify NOT onto search terms with a - in front of the word. for example -angst will remove anything with angst mentioned.
| | acts as or would. For example art | | student will pull art, art student and student.
“” quotes around a term will bring up what exactly you typed exactly as you typed it. “no angst” will bring up #no angst; not #extra angst and #no happy ending

Don’t bother using the title search unless you know the exact title word for word, it wont pull anything up unless you get it exactly right. Same with Author/Artist.
Word count can be good for general searches like >10k if you’re looking for a something with more plot and <8k if you’re looking for oneshots, pwp or 5+1s. I don’t really use it, but don’t discount it it does have its uses.
Don’t bother setting fandoms unless you’re feeling extremely thorough, or you’re looking for gen fics and won’t be specifying a relationship.

This is your best friend. This means you can search exclusively for the ship or friendship you want and avoid pretty much everything else. (If you enter james, stucky is the third option listed, just go james down down down return) This is how you get guaranteed Steve/Bucky or whatever else you’re looking for.
Limiting the rating is also good for more general searches, like if you’re looking for pwp for example, setting the rating to explicit and the word count to <10k usually brings up 95% pwp. Don’t use it when looking for specific fics unless you keep on getting hundreds of results and don’t remember enough to limit it any other way.

There are lots of things you can manipulate in the work tags section but additional tags is the most useful after relationship. If you start typing in the section, it will suggest frequently occurring tags. Pick the one that’s the closest to what you’re looking for for example, winter soldier steve will point you to the actual tag for it which is Steve Rogers as the Winter Soldier. You can also ignore the suggestions, type in whatever you want and hit return to add it to the search. A lot of tags that exist won’t actually show up in the suggestions. Just barreling through aggressively typing exactly what you want works surprisingly well surprisingly often. You can add as many or as few as you like. Theres a thousands of tags from different types of AUs to tropes like first kiss to character variations like pre serum steve. Pretty much anything you’re looking for has a tag. If nothing comes up when you search, moving the tags to the any field option sometimes pulls up more results.
Adding characters is another good way to narrow it down. We have a few requests for fics with things like lots of Tony being all !!!!! or Peggy being badass and adding their name brings up stuff that for sure has them in it.
Sorting by best match, kudos or date updated are the best options in the sort by. is you’re looking for wips go date updated, kudos if you want a slight guarantee that it’ll be good and best match if you’re looking for a specific.

this is what I’m using to try and find the requested fic. It seems pretty general, but you’d be surprised.

see what I mean? sometimes you get 800 fics and sometimes you get one. Alright well I should take a look at it since it came up.

Since you don’t want to be reading all of a 40k fic to see if its what you’re looking for, there is a way around it! On Chrome there is a find function that finds every time a word is used on a page. On a mac the shortcut is command f. idk about pcs.

this little bar is what you’re looking for. Enter a word or phrase that will help narrow down what you’re looking at. Anon said that Howard knew the identity of the winter soldier, so I’ll skim through mentions of Howard and look for righteous fury.

Theres a count for the total number right here. You can navigate each mention by hitting the up and down arrows on the side of the find bar.

The mention you have selected is highlighted orange, all others are yellow. Scroll through the mentions to skim whats near them and figure out if it’s what you’re looking for.

I also tried this variation to try and pull up more

I got a lot more results this time. Once you get more like this, you just have to scroll though and try to narrow it down by reading the descriptions. You gotta be kinda patient here especially if you’re looking for a specific fic.
I found one more really close match while I was looking through. I have another one in mind but I’m gonna go to the list I keep to find it
I keep a pretty organized list of most of the fics I’ve read spread over the fic recs page I have on my comics blog, this note I have saved on my laptop and I also use couple of other big fic rec posts I’ve found over the years. Keeping a note or a list is actually where I find a lot of fics I’ve already read since I use memorable details instead of titles or tags and thats easier for me.
This sort of thing is only really a good idea if you’re really intense about this and up for the work that it takes. Otherwise you have us and the power of ao3 searches to find stuff.
so to cap it off:

This one came from the winter soldier steve search

This one came from the Steve Rogers as the Winter Soldier search

And this one came from an external list I keep, but I could have found it through searching if I’d been more patient.
Alright thats pretty much it. If you have any more questions about ao3 searches, drop the library an ask and I’ll answer it as best I can!
Happy Reading!

-PWP under5k minipost-
Sometimes we all need a little smut. Here are some of our favorite pwp's under 5 thousand words. (Be sure to heed the tags/warnings as they won't be listed here) Happy reading!
Dirty Places (2,268 words/NC-17) - Control. That's all Steve wants right now. Something to break in his anger at himself. Something to fix.
A Question of Expertise (2,375 words/NC-17) - Steve has criteria for losing his virginity. Bucky knows somebody who meets them.
One More Notch (2,650 words/NC-17) - Bucky almost gets himself killed on a mission (again), Steve gets angry, rough sex ensues. That's it, that's the story.
Third Party (2,179 words/NC-17) - In which Steve and Bucky share a woman, Steve's first time.
(Body) Shots Between Friends (5,002 words/NC-17) - That, is exactly, how Bucky ends up on his knees, a shot glass lodge in the waistband of Steve’s jeans, his shirt hoisted up to show off firm abdomen.
Warmth In Winter (1,304 words/NC-17) - Steve always put up the token protest, but they ended up this way as often as not in the winter, sharing covers and space and heat and not freezing to death. If anyone were to walk in, it would seem reasonable, even. It was the best.
Size Isn't A Problem (1,881 words/R) - It's the first time Bucky has seen Steve naked in some seventy-odd years, and things have definitely changed.
The Way That You Move (2,106 words/NC-17) - The minute Steve meets Bucky, he knows he's in over his head.
Just a Lucky So-And-So (1,978 words/R) - The one where Captain America and the Winter Soldier play tag on the Helicarrier, to the horror of respectable SHIELD agents.

-Arranged Marriage minipost-
Who doesn’t love a good arranged marriage fic? They inspire nostalgia for books and fairy tales many of us loved as children as well as invoking the romance of centuries gone by. Also you know, hot boys making out is a pretty strong selling point.
Brookland House
“You seem distressed, my angel. Are you not pleased with the match? The word from court is that Lord James Barnes is an upstanding gentleman, not given to the wild circles around the Prince Regent. And Steve, it was he who asked for you. The young man has kept you in mind all these years -- despite our circumstances.”
But Hey, You’re All Right
'This is not my fault,' Tony lies. 'It was supposed to be a joke! Christ.'
'Thanks to your joke,' says Coulson, 'we now have a code three-four-delta, with the variable being a Russian immigrant. We're checking his background right now, but it might take a while. Meanwhile, I suggest you civilian-proof the Tower. If any SHIELD intelligence is compromised, I will hurt you.'
Yes, this is the story where the Winter Soldier is a Russian mail-order bride. Everything goes about as well as you'd expect.
Just Say You Do
Steve just wanted a job. He wasn't expecting a marriage proposal. And he certainly wasn't expecting to accept.
Life’s Knocking
"We don't have to," Steve says as soon as they're alone. The bedroom is elaborate, designed just for a few weeks of use at a time.Bucky wouldn't be surprised if it's the biggest room on the ship. An entire floating building designed just for the honeymoons of political arrangements.
"What?"
Steve tugs at his uniform collar, fancy dress blues that don't look like they're worn often. "We don't know each other, in two weeks I need to return to my post. We can carry on with our own business."
Of Broken Dreams and Mended Hearts
When the House of Barnes is left in massive debt after the death of George Barnes, their oldest son and heir, Bucky, is forced to sacrifice his own hopes and dreams by entering an arranged married to Steve Rogers. Steve seems kind enough, has a prominent job in the government, and was even voted Society's Best Catch. But the House Rogers is significantly higher in status than Bucky's family, which means Bucky is marrying up in Society, and marrying up doesn't only come with rewards, it also comes with certain...expectations and losses--some of which Bucky might be willing to do anything to avoid. And those opportunities might come his way.
Unless, of course, he actually starts falling in love with his new husband...
Seems Like a Plan
The man at the end of the table gets up. He's tall and muscular and oh so blond and Bucky thinks he could drown in the oceans inside his blue eyes. His heart pounds ten times faster when he realises that yes, this is his fiance.
or the one where Bucky and Steve have an arranged marriage
The Supersoldiers’ Amnesiac Groom
Steve Rogers has always known that the supersoldier serum was a gift, and he's never been afraid to do what's right.
When Uncle Sam asks him to unite the two sides of the Cold War by taking part in a symbolic union with a fabled Russian assassin, Captain America doesn't hesitate to do his duty.
Little does he know how thoroughly his world is going to be turned upside down.

"Act normal," Bucky told him. "We're being watched by one, two—at least three agents."
Steve gaped at him. Bucky was unshaven, but he'd cut his hair like it used to—and then Bucky winced and reached for his ankle, and Steve was moving in to help before he realized that Bucky was giving him cover: some pretext for the look that must be on his face. Bucky was also giving him an excuse to scoot closer, and a reason to touch him. It had been ages, but it all came flooding back to him—this vocabulary of almost-innocent touches, an everyday life of deceit. Steve put his hand on Bucky's calf and peered down at his ankle; Bucky's head bent close to his.

Steve wishes Bucky wouldn’t look at him the way he does – a deliberate gaze, subtly digging his top teeth into that pouty bottom lip; following his every move like a lion watches a gazelle. It’s been going on for months, perhaps longer... Steve talks, and Bucky listens. Well, that’s the point – Bucky’s supposed to be listening. Steve’s just doing his job, after all… No harm in that.

When James pulled back, it was only to kiss him with a burning mouth that tasted of blood. Steve kissed back fervently, heart hammering in his ears and in his wounds. James ended it too quickly for his liking, and Steve tugged him close again, relishing this with all he had. It was all he had. He didn’t want anything else.
This wasn’t a dream. It hurt too much to be a dream.

-Tattoo AU minipost-
We have had so many requests for tattooartist!steve and tattooartist!bucky as well as just aus where they have tattoos that it seemed about time to make a actual post for this awesome theme. Here are some of our fave tattoo themed aus:
Breathe
Prompt from anonymous: Imagine Bucky is a tattoo artist and Steve is the little skinny, health challenged hipster punk that had the balls to have his first tattoo be the word “breathe” on his ribs and the more they fall in love, the more Steve’s body becomes a canvas for Bucky’s art.
Broken Dicks and Bloody Noses
Steve and Bucky meet in the ER, and then keep meeting in the ER because they are both knuckleheads who keep getting beaten up by other people.
Deeper Then My Skin
Steve thought that living with a bad tattoo was just one of those things, until a drunken night out with his friends changes that.
The Discard Pile
I saw this prompt on capkink: I've seen a few fics where Bucky is born in the modern age and Steve is still Captain America, but I'd like a fic where it's Steve in that position instead. He finds the Winter Soldier rifling through his garbage and ends up adopting him like a dog.
And from that grew this ridiculous story featuring an extremely broke Steve who does post-mastectomy tattoos, burlesque dancer Natasha, her adoring boyfriend Sam, Clint Barton who is definitely not a slumlord, breast-cancer survivor Pepper and her adoring, asshole boyfriend Tony and various Hydra douchebags. And the assassin formerly known as the Winter Soldier.
His Unspeakable Memories
Natasha gestures to his shoulder. “The scars. The stump. Put some art on it.” “Oh, sure. Great idea. Point me to the magic markers and we’ll make a day of it.” “Cap the sass, Barnes. I mean like a tattoo.”
***
Natasha convinces Bucky to cover up his scars with a tattoo, and she has an obnoxiously, offensively perfect artist in mind for the job.
Invaders Must Die
Bucky gets rescued by some guy named Steve Rogers when some Hydra skinheads attack him in an alley. He has the idea that he'll have something sane in his life for once when they decide to go on a date, but then he learns that the guy he wants to date works for a secret organization named Shield and that Hydra aren't just lame skinheads that try to beat up punks.
I’ve Never Felt Young (but for you I’ll try)
Bucky has been working at Clint’s bakery ever since he left the military. He’s happy with his life, and adjusting to his missing arm. But when tiny, argumentative Steve Rogers walks into the bakery one day, his life will never be the same…
Like a Good Neighbour
Steve pulls the guy into his apartment, past the entrance to his bedroom, and into his kitchen.
“You needed to use my phone?” He calls out. The guy nods with a puzzled expression.
“Why are you yelling, dude?”
Steve shushes him with wide eyes and a stern expression. He gestures toward the bedroom.
His neighbor, a lean brunet with a perpetual smirk, lowered his voice. “What’s the plan here, buddy?”
----+----
Steve and Bucky are neighbors.
never gonna find it (if you’re looking for it)
Clint has a roommate named Bucky, who Steve has never really met. When Clint and Natasha decide to take the next step in their relationship, Steve is in need of someone to help him pay the rent, and Bucky is in need of a place to stay.
Tiny Hipster Steve, who owns a tattoo shop, and war veteran Bucky find that they share much more than just a living room, and fall in love the way stupid kids usually do.
Sex, Drugs & Needles
Bucky’s a bit of a masochist in that sense – needles and the buzz of a tattoo gun have always turned him on…
It’s even worse that this client is what they call a ‘needle virgin’. Doesn’t appear to have a piercing anywhere on him (although Bucky could still be surprised; you never know what people have hiding under their clothes), and he’s already made it clear that he has no prior ink. Bucky’s always found something inherently sexy about being the first person to introduce another to that experience. Not all people like it; some can only handle the one tattoo and then they’re done for good, never seen again.
Others have the tendency to come back, and Bucky always feels a small sense of pride when he watches those select clients getting more and more added to their bodies – now in love with the art form. And if they happen to be getting tattooed by Clint,or Natasha, or Logan, there’s always that feeling of, But my art went on you first.
He has absolutely no problem popping this guy’s needle cherry.
Signed, Sealed, Delivered
Steve Rogers was content with his life. He loved his shop, loved creating works of art for people to display on their bodies, had a tight knit group of friends who cared about him, and had finally paid off his student loans and the loan he’d taken out to start his business. But it still feels like there’s something, or someone, missing from his life.
Everything’s going to change when he decides to take Natasha’s advice and sign up for a military penpal program.
This is For Real
It was just Bucky’s luck that he would meet his soulmate on a night when he was blackout drunk.
It’s a good thing Steve’s quick to forgive.
