Come evening, I headed over to the coffee shop across the street to buy takeaway Roasted Chicken Rice (烧鸡饭) for mum. She requested for chicken drumstick and a portion of roasted pork to go with the savoury rice.

As for myself, I went with Economy Rice (菜饭), choosing a selection of curry cabbage, savoury and crunchy ikan bilis (dried anchovies deep-fried) & peanuts plus a piece of sweet & sour pork chop with rice.

It's fun being somewhat knowledgeable about East Asian food because most people I encounter irl don't know what's actually in East Asian food, and so I constantly get the privilege of teaching them something new. I feel like a beacon of knowledge amongst random grocery stores goers. Take my hand random housewife who has never left the state of Georgia, I will tell you what oyster sauce and napa cabbage is.

I have food to eat for dinner that won't take a lot of effort to reheat and enough energy to do the reheating BUT it's one of those nights where the thought of ordering food just sounds so good!! Panang curry?? Saag paneer?? Idk just. Not my (delicious, nutritious) house food lol

This isn't an ask for $ help, just some plaintive bleating that I know many of you will identify with. Sometimes you want take out just because you want take out!

Also how about a sleepover confession? I need to preface this by telling you that for Christmas 2022 my partners family invited us for dinner at his parents house where his uncle (chef in a big hotel) cooked and he made pork roast with a warm cabbage salad with bacon and stuff. He made way too much and we got leftover of like 1kg of that cabbage salad. Mind you, I do not eat cabbage salad especially not the warm kind. I just don’t like it. And because my partner is.. I’m not even sure what he is exactly be he didn’t say no so since Christmas 2022 I had this 1kg bag of frozen cabbage in the freezer and today I remembered it when taking something else out of said freezer and now in the afternoon I threw out the frozen cabbage stuff. The entire bag, straight into the dumpster. It’s such a relief knowing that stuff no one was going to eat anymore (I’m not even sure if it would have been edible after such a long time). My partner probably doesn’t even remember. It’s better not asking and just doing things like that without his knowledge. I also threw out a ton of expired candy that didn’t look so fresh anymore 😅

This reminds me of all the organs i have in my freezer (my dad's a tandoori chef) i need to cook these organs there are so many of them, I also just have a massive lamb bone in there i need to make stock out of but dont want toooooooooo

kluski śląskie!!!!!!!! my mum used to make a BRILLIANT sauce for them but they don't sell the right spice packets for them anymore 😔😔

also a big stir fry fan... doesn't matter too much what's in it ...... OH and i also really like just. italian food in general

but kluski śląskie are my favourite food overall

Took the bus to Sembawang MRT Station for an early dinner at Kopitiam food court. I went for the Indonesia style Grilled Chicken Set with a grilled whole chicken leg in kecap manis or Indonesian sweet soy sauce and soup. The sides are curry vegetables and a fried egg with white rice. The chicken had a nice, charred flavour, smothered with savoury sweet black sauce.

Mum went off to queue for the Economy Rice (菜饭). She picked the following dishes for her cai png  - Har Cheong Gai (虾酱鸡) marinated in fermented shrimp paste and deep-fried, sweet & sour pork and Chinese cabbage stir-fry with white rice.

Going very British tonight: putting together some quick chicken tikka masala with Patak's curry paste!

Never been as wild about that one, but it was the curry paste variety that I spotted in a supermarket here. Better variety in the cooking sauces, but I prefer to use the paste actual BIR takeaway style. They usually buy the Patak's pastes by the bucket.

Tonight, the sauce is getting the ever-popular "half a thing of whatever tomato product is open in the fridge", passata this time. Mr. C also bought light cream (here, matlagningsgrädde or "cooking cream") because I forgot to specify. It's all good. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On more of a hillbilly fusion note, though, I'm also planning to make some half-assed take on a dry cabbage curry in the Instant Pot, to go with it. We had half a big head of cabbage in the fridge. This is basically just going to be a pressure cooker version of my usual fried cabbage, but with different seasoning. Which is true enough of a lot of actual South Asian versions, probably including the pressure cooking sometimes to speed up the braising part. People there usually have access to a better assortment of spices than I do right at the moment, though thankfully that should be partly remedied after we get the latest Drakfrukt order.
