menu menuitem:hover, .menu menuitem:hover { background-color: #4D4DFF; }

I installed Linux Mint MATE 22.1 today.
https://linuxmint.com/screenshots.php#
I had been testing it out on the Linux laptop and decided to install it in place of Debian 12. I kept my Mint Cinnamon install.
Once it had installed, which was very quick, I updated Mint using the updater tool and then installed Google Chrome, VLC Media Player, GIMP and a couple of other apps to the laptop.
Many of these programs I use on the Cinnamon install as well.
I then tweaked the panel by adding a workspace switcher and a set of eyes that follow the cursor!
A did a quick Neofetch in the command window, this shows detailed system information.
Like LM Cinnamon it is very well supported out the box and features modern Bluetooth set-up support, a clean user interface and an easy to set up experience.
The themes are all Linux Mint related window styles which look very modern. The MATE themes I had in Debian can be manually installed in Linux Mint if needed. They can be downloaded from the Software Manager or through the terminal.
This theme pack provides the same experience across the desktop whether you are using MATE or Cinnamon.
However I did come across a small bug where the widgets locked onto the panel moved after a restart. This is possibly a GTK related bug on Ubuntu versions with this desktop environment. It is easy to fix though by resetting the panel.
The bug only exists on newer MATE versions.
Linux Mint uses MATE desktop 1.26. However Debian also uses 1.26 which didn't have this bug. I don't know what's causing this in Mint. Hopefully this gets fixed in the next few releases!
The latest desktop version for MATE is 1.28, released later last year. Distros such as Ubuntu and Fedora would use this as it is a more recent release.
Also the MATE desktop is less animated compared with Cinnamon, however the desktop allows you to focus on tasks without distractions and feels very stable to use.
Underneath are some comparisons with the Cinnamon desktop.
I prefer Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop as it looks and feels more modern and is it's flagship desktop distribution. It is also more powerful as users can add applets, themes and layout configurations through an in-system database which is regularly updated.
The file manager in MATE is called Caja and is based on GNOME 2's Nautilus, whilst on Cinnamon the file manager is called Nemo, which uses the newer GNOME file manager as a base.
A simple, but powerful desktop environment for Mint!

Starting out with void linux
Hey hey! welcome back. This is my first post that's not an introduction.
So i've been into linux for almost a year, and since then i've learned a lot. But i haven't limited my options to linux only, but also to other unix systems like bsd. When i was browsing r/unix, i saw someone commenting that one should try void linux, because its similar to bsd in a way: its minimalistic, transparent and easy to understand. its very good for those who are willing to start out with linux by learning how it works.
Its main features are the xbps package manager (you cant install programs via source code compiling like in gentoo) and the fact it uses runit as the init system, which (i think) is supposed to be some weird hybrid between systemd and sysvinit.
So yesterday i decided to give a try and made a bootable usb stick. its relatively easy to install. the hardest thing would be you having to know how to partition your system in a way that actually fits your needs, but even that is explained in the official documentation. Wi-fi support works surprisingly good by default, even better than debian.
I started out from nothing and decided to install i3wm in it, but since i had no prior knowledge in twms, i went to the arch wiki (void's official site said you can consult things there) to see how to install and configure it, and i also looked up yt videos. its nice that you can work on a pc with just a keyboard, not needing to use a mouse. reminds me a lot of those old keyboard-only portable computers. they're kinda cute.
As for the programs...i installed xfce's thunar file browser but it was a bit faulty. i couldn't access the trash bin to recover/delete files. i think i should install mate's caja or something? maybe.
Firefox works nice ig, but if you want really basic web browsing, like browsing sites that dont include js, you should try midori or lynx with framebuffer enabled (havent tried this one. only plain lynx on debian's cli). if i want to listen to a song or something i can use smtube and it doesnt consume much resources. a basic libreoffice install works wonderfully!! my 1.3 ghz cpu could handle calc (linux excel) better and without lagging than let's say debian...
So that was all guys. Can't see what the future awaits for me. maybe i should try openbsd/netbsd sometime soon. they interest me a lot. I hope you all enjoyed reading this. stay safe and see you soon!

Linux Life Episode 82

Hello ladies and gentlemen. Yes the return of the Linux blog written by me. don’t know whether that’s a good thing but here we are.
I admit its been a long time since my last episode that’s because I went an absolute age without Linux in any machines for quite a while. In the last episode I admitted I had just installed EndeavourOS Cassini Nova R2 (Arch-based) in my Dell i7 laptop (Mangelwurzel)
Now I have been running it for several months and I admit continues to work well. I admit i am not trying to play Windows games on it as the Quadro K3100 is not supported buy the current Nvidia drivers. However running just the nouveau drivers allows me to do anything else providing you don’t need Vulkan.
Which I only use Vulkan when I was using Lutris to play games such as Path of Exile. That can’t be done with the nouveau driver. Apparently there is a version of the Nouveau setup called NVK coming which will allow Vulkan to work but as of yet its in very early beta stages and my card is not even on the list for support just yet.
Mind you considering the guy who maintained Nouveau for the last 10 years has just left the Linux industry I don’t know when any new updates to the nouveau project will even be. I assume its a team of people I doubt one man alone is writing such.
However I have been using EndeavourOS as my daily driver and it has been no problems whatsoever. Even the internet which used to keep dropping out they seem to be using a broadcom wl driver that works fine and is updated and moved every time the kernel gets updated.
So to be honest it can web browse, I can do email, word process, emulate stuff, even video edit and more if I felt like it so to be honest at the moment I can’t complain regarding how well it is working.
As for playing modern Windows games well I don’t really do that any more so not going to lose much sleep there. To be honest when I had my i7 desktop with the Nvidia 1030 I only did it to prove it worked. Sadly that machine is long gone.
So as Mangelwurzel is working well and I have no major complaints what else have I be doing in the meantime.
Well I had been using an Apple iBook G4 to start writing a book as it was a lot less distracting of a machine. However the guy who attempted repair it before I rescued it made a right hash and removed most of the screws in the machine.
So the hard drive would move on a regular basis if you moved it across the desk. Sometimes it wouldn’t start until you reconnected the pins which had moved a fraction of a millimetre.
So I had to lift the keyboard panel regularly. All was fine until one day the keyboard came undone then I had to put it back in. It was a fiddle. Then the power connector on the board came out of its socket.
I managed to get everything back in or so I thought. But moving the keyboard had now unseated the wireless card. I struggled to get that back in but when I put it back together the power connector came out but this time it took the actual socket connector with it from the board.
Guess what now the machine won’t power up. So I took out the hard drive and the iBook G4 is now dead as the connector is tiny and will require soldering I know I am not capable of.
Obviously I was not amused by this but I did happen to have a USB 2.0 to IDE adaptor which has a side for 2.5” drives.
So I connected the drive up to Mangelwurzel and using qemu-img which is one of the tools of QEMU. I set about copying the image to my i7 hard drive. I had enough space as it was only an 80Gb HDD (Yes my Hard drive was called Braeburn it’s an Apple) and I had 150GB space on the SSD.
When I did it I really didn’t think it would work. It sat there doing nothing at the command line. No percentage meter no nothing but when I looked at the file in caja it was going up slowly so I left it to get on with it.
Four and a half hours later the files had copied to the hard drive and it was done.
OK so now I had this copy of this hard drive but no Mac OS X to run it on. So using QEMU (a Level 1 VM hypervisor) basically it can create a virtual G4 machine and run Mac OS X 10.4.11 which was on the old hard drive.
It took a few attempts at getting the right QEMU commands but sure enough I managed to get QEMU running Mac OS X using the image of the hard drive i had made. It can connect to the internet and run everything i had installed including the Mac OS 9 Classic stuff on there.
I was impressed and because it was a direct conversion I didn’t have to change passwords or anything as it was the ones from the hard drive.
Amazing stuff I had saved the drive and its contents and it was usable. However QEMU unless you use it a certain way doesn’t supply sound for G4 emulation in the basic version.
Nope for that you need the Screamer version luckily there is a QEMU Screamer build in the AUR but it’s not as recent as QEMU standard.
So after a bit of fighting with QEMU commands as sound is a bit odd the way they do it. So I now have two boot scripts one without sound and one with.
Sound sort of works it crackles and slows things down a little but it does work. Its not perfect but considering its an i7 on Linux running Mac OS X 10.4.11 as a G4 using my hard drive image.
That in itself is quite amazing I can’t complain.
Having just completed that I was given a Raspberry Pi 4B (2 GB model) to play with. Now I have played with Pi machines before.
Last time I was messing around with a Pi 3B and a Pi 4B (4GB Model) and I remember playing with thongs like Twister OS, RiscOS, and having to build a micro SD a certain way to get EndeavourOS to work.
However I had to give them back to their owner so it has been a while since I have played with a Raspberry Pi.
So now I have the current 2GB model which obviously is a not got as much memory since the last Pi 4B I used.
Well I knew who owned it last so I had to set up a new download of the OS. If anyone is aware that the Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced to new Pi 5 which is twice as fast as the 4B apparently.
As I don’t have one for testing I can’t say and the likelihood of me getting one any time soon is probably none existent.
However they have updated the Raspbian OS to the latest Debian (Bookworm) which does work with the Pi 4B
I got it down and wrote it to the Micro SD all nice and ready.
Now comes the fun bit. i don’t own a monitor or TV with a HDMI port so now i had to figure how to connect it to the only monitor I still have which an old Belinea 22” monitor (which works fine considering its age).
The previous time i was using a Dell 19” monitor but it had a DVI connection so I had this HDMI to DVI lead which I knew worked as I had used it when I last used the Pi I used previously. Unfortunately the Belinea is VGA connection only… problem.
Also the connection lead I used last time to link the two HDMI leads I had to return so I had to buy a coupling link to connect the two leads together. So as I was buying leads I decided to buy a connector lead which now had a Female DVI to Male VGA creating on hell of a stupid Frankenstein type lead
So the lead is now Micro HDMI to HDMI - Coupling link - HDMI to DVI Male - DVI Female to Male VGA. Strangely enough this stupid lead didn’t work.
After a lot of failing I ordered a Female HDMI to Male VGA adapter making the cable be much shorter and it actually works. Tada… however don’t ask me to remove the adapter from the monitor as it was a bitch to screw in and I am not taking it off in any hurry.
OK now I have a working screen connection lets test some software.
New RaspianOS being a recent version of Debian (Bookworm) it is using Wayland as a compositor rather than the old X11 setup. which I am sure on the Pi 5 works wonderfully or an 8GB Pi 4B. On the 2Gb model it works but runs like treacle.
So slow it was painful to watch. After about a hour of faffing I gave up and reinserted the MicroSD to my i7 and installed EndeavourOS which strangely enough is based on the same Cassini Nova R2 build as the i7 but ARM.
I set it to run and it kept dropping out due to not being able to find a mirror. Quick edit to use the London mirror which was hashed out once put back in the installer worked.
Now lets be straight here it was not fast and jumped in stages so many a time I thought it had given up for it to suddenly jump to the next stage. It took about 3 attempts but now I have a working edition of EndeavourOS working on the Pi4.
It still uses X11 instead of Wayland but it seems to work fine. It is never going to win Olympic medals as the 2GB model is the inferior one. However I was able to watch YouTube admittedly at 360p and 480p respectively but it works fine.
The ironic factor is the Micro SD is 16Gb then i found an unused 32Gb one but I am damned if I am going through that again in a hurry. Basically when it installs it extends to ensure the full space is used meaning I would have more space for installing programs etc.. Oh well I may get around to it but not for a little while.
So far I have installed Libre Office and Focuswriter. I installed a few emulators after all isn’t that what the Pi is famous for…
Well lets say Dosbox I ran MAME 0.37b5 with full romset as I have them and running Mr Do. not an immensely taxing ROM it achieved 3.57 frames per second and was rather choppy
At that point I tried installing a few things only to discover they were not available for the aarch64 version such as Hedgewars or TuxRacer.
I didn’t try TwisterOS as it looks like it hasn’t updated since I last looked at it neither has RiscOS.
So EndeavourOS is now working on both my i7 and the Pi 4B. It seems Debian just doesn’t like me.
Off to find an arcade image to stick on that 32GB Micro SD but I will report on that next time as I think this has gone on long enough.
Until next time when ever that may be… Take care.

Does anyone know of a file manager for Linux that lets you choose how it alphabetizes your files? Caja and Nautilus both seem to simply ignore non-alphanumeric characters, which messes with the organizational system I imported from my Windows machine (where the file manager had a different alphabetization rule).

Even after cleaning up my OS, my Mint19.3 is 8GB, while LMDE2 is 4.3, just half of it for the same things from my driver seat perspective. It's too bad because, with LMDE2's Cinnamon and Nemo, I feel right at home and I cannot replicate that touch and feel experience on Mint 19.3, and LMDE2 will lose security updates from the Debian Security teem soon in June.Īlso, Cinnamon is becoming bloated. Yes Cinnamon it is faster but important things have been regressing, in my opinion. I can see major differences from LMDE2 to Mint19.3. Visual control (theming, active and inactive active window contrast, icons, etc,) and keyboard control, shortcuts and navigation still do have a lot to be done. I'm about to change to MATE because Nemo and Cinnamon, although awesome, have been losing valuable configurations settings and are still lacking proper configuration and customization as small configurations are becoming a PITA.

/home/usuario/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css
Añadir el siguiente código parecido al "css"
* { caret-color: #4D4DFF; }

May 2025.
I tried installing a set of themes on Ubuntu MATE 24.04.1 LTS in Distrosea today.
https://distrosea.com/
These themes are provided as a theme package found in vanilla MATE desktops such as Debian and Fedora.
MATE is the modern day continuation of GNOME 2, a very popular, efficient and functional desktop environment from the early 2000s.
The theme pack I selected are compactable GTK3/4 (Graphical Toolkit) versions based on classic GNOME 2 era themes.
Ubuntu MATE website:
https://ubuntu-mate.org/
Debian Linux website:
https://www.debian.org/
Fedora Linux website:
https://fedoraproject.org/spins/mate
See MATE Desktop website here:
https://mate-desktop.org/blog/
About the Graphical Toolkit user interface:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GTK
I used the MATE Tweak tool to adjust the panels from the 'familiar' layout to the 'traditional' layout. Here are many of the layouts available.
MATE Tweak can change the panel layout between Traditional (GNOME 2), Unity, Redmond (Windows) contemporary (Mac OS) style.
Here are many of the layouts available.
Afterwards, I used the command line to install the themes with the command: sudo apt install mate-themes.
This command then prompted me to agree the system changes and then it installed the required theme files to the list.
I opened up the theme folder in the Caja file manager. This shows all the ones installed on the system.
Next I opened the appearance preferences and cycled through each theme. There are a total of 12 new themes it added alongside the existing Yaru Colour theme collection for Ubuntu.
This package couldn't be installed graphical so this is why I installed it through the terminal. It is also available to install through the Software Manager on Linux Mint.
The theme package can also be installed on the Cinnamon desktop and other linux distributions.
I like these themes as they provide a more 3D feel and is refreshing to see themes for a desktop environment that hasn't moved towards flat design. It themes all the desktop elements from the windows, panels, drop down menus, CSD apps and widgets.
My favourite one is called YaruOK (blue), as it provides resizable window controls, 3D controls and provides a familiar look to the desktop. The theme is also called TraditionalOK.
This theme is a fork of a GTK2 theme called Clear-looks, which was created by Red Hat developers.
YaruOK is a modern variant that uses GTK3 & 4. The theme is rendered in SVG instead of PNG format which improves HiDpi scaling and features themed client side decorations for header bar windows such as the Disks utility.
I also added a GNOME Eyes widget onto the panel!
These fun set of eyes follow your mouse cursor around the screen and can help you find the cursor amongst the clutter of windows. It is built to be very lightweight.
I also like the workspace switcher on the bottom left, which allows you to switch between as many desktop workspaces as you want.
The little square windows within each desktop can be clicked on and moved to another workspace.
Like with other desktop environments, you can also right click a window and move it onto another workspace. Each desktop can be named for a assigned task.
A System Monitor widget can also be added to the panels to display CPU, Memory, Swap and Network processes.
There are many other very interesting widget to play around with on the desktop and panels as well!
Here are the MATE themes in Ubuntu Linux 24.04.1, integrating with the Cinnamon desktop.
Below are some theming screenshots from Debian MATE 12 Linux.
I've customised the panel, selected the compact menu and changed notification sizes to make it more clearer. The window lists stack onto each other with the increased size.
The MATE panels have adjustable transparency and can be re-coloured and textured very easily through its own preferences box.
See screenshots below!
A very interesting look at the user interface elements found in GNOME 2, MATE and Cinnamon Linux desktop environments!

How to Duly Establish and Legally Register a Company in Costa Rica
As long as you have an incorporation agent and the so-called Power of Attorney, to register a company in Costa Rica is not as complicated as compared with other countries. It is not a requirement for a corporate owner to be a Costa Rican resident – the assigned agents are legally qualified to establish and register the corporation. After hiring your own agent, below are the further steps you need to take.
Arrange and settle agency fees
Whether the agent that you have is on his own or is part of an agency, you must comply in the agency fees to be required as mobilization payments in the document processing. Inclusive with the payments for the processing itself, the obtainment of documents may have corresponding prices.
Decide and finalize the company structure
A company structure and its system should be finalized and agreed upon by the owners or the company management. To register a company in Costa Rica, a project plan will be created based on this company structure, to which appropriate documents will be processed based on the timeline also dictated and allotted by the government.
Have your company name translated
All company names in Costa Rica are translated in Spanish. A separate firm will be assisting you in translating your proposed firm name. The firm will also take care of the process regarding the reservation of your desired company name with the Costa Rica Registrar of Companies.
Sign the required documents
The processing agency will provide you all the requisites required to register a company in Costa Rica. Affixation of signatures will have to be done for the needed documents and papers to be notarized and legalized. Costa Rica company formation The signed documents must be submitted and returned to the agency, which the agency will prepare for official documentation registration in the corresponding Costa Rican authority.

Create a corporate bank account
The assisting agency or firm that you have hired for the processing of your registration also has the responsibility to open the corporate bank account for the company. They may also pay the necessary incorporation fees as requested by the authorities.
Have an incorporation charter registered
You must also be able to file a company incorporation charter to the mercantile division of the Costa Rican public registry. From this does the firm also gain permission to have the corporation’s bookkeeping be legalized.
Be an official Costa Rican taxpayer
Whilst preparations for an official office address is also being undertaken, the hired firm or agency may use their office address in specifying the corporation’s location in the D-140 form provided by the government. This form registers the company to be a legal taxpayer of the country.
Gather the insurance
To register a company in Costa Rica, it must be taken into account that as an employer, you must obtain insurance for the workers. It is imperative that labor risk insurance be obtained from the National Insurance Institute of Costa Rica.
Be registered with the Costa Rican Social Security
Upon the corporation’s incorporation, the hired firm or agency shall officially register your company as an employer in the CCSS, or the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social.
Have your Costa Rican company kit delivered
After the successful registration, your hired agency will be sending your complete company kit, wherein the documents filed and received are compiled.

Abstract
In the activity, we investigated a little about which were the areas of a company, how mathematics is applied in the different areas of a MSME and the impact that mathematics had on organizational strategies and management indicators and all this giving us to know how important mathematics is in the field of administration as it is applied and what impact mathematics gives to a company by expanding a little more our own knowledge on the subject.
Áreas de la empresa

Patagonia
As lovers of mountains, Patagonia has loomed large in our imagination as a travel destination. We decided to make the trek to Patagonia while living in South America, figuring we were about 50% closer. Luckily my dear friend and climbing partner Mo also wanted to go to Patagonia, and Mo was game to backpack with us & our three kids! What a good friend!
It was tricky to plan the trip, as you have to book the camping sites in Torres del Paine National Park, Chile about 6 months in advance. We decided to do a modified W trek in 7 nights and 8 days. I did my best to plan an itinerary that would allow Tomu (age 6) & Jade (age 4) to hike the daily distances comfortably while also allowing the adults to see the most spectacular parts of the National Park, since it is a loooong way to get there, as well as expensive. As always when traveling or hiking or climbing with kids, it’s a compromise.
I realize that to most people, backpacking for 8 days with 3 small children sounds like a completely mad idea. I think that because I was a backcountry ranger in Olympic National Park in my 20’s, I have the idea that I can do it. That I can do hard things in the backcountry—I can carry a heavy pack, because I’ve done it before. In the months leading up to the trip, I went through all kinds of scenarios in my head for how we were going to do it. How would we carry 6 sleeping bags, 6 sleeping pads, many layers of clothes for 6 people, 2 tents, 8 days of breakfast & lunch food, 40 diapers, a potty, and a 23 pound baby between 3 adults? To me it sounded horrible to have a heavy pack, a baby on the front in a carrier, and walk at a 4 year olds pace. So I considered 2 adults hiking quickly, then one coming back to get the third pack, while one adult set up tents, and the last adult walked slowly with the 3 kids. Our kids have hiked a lot in Cajas, including one training hike the same length as our longest day in Patagonia (5.7 miles), and they have camped a lot; however, our previous longest backpacking trip was 1.3 miles to spend two nights at Third Beach. Also, Luz hadn’t slept in a tent in 7 months, so I wasn’t sure how she would do. So, there were a lot of unknowns for the trip…
We decided to buy dinners at the huts, rather than carry and cook our own food with the rationale that the savings in weight on our backs was well worth the $42 per dinner. That was definitely a good decision!! The dinners were 4 course meals, and they were delicious.
While packing for the trip in Cuenca, we were worried as we looked at the weather forecasts for Torres del Paine—every day rain! Mo said that sounds like type II fun for sure. We waterproofed our boots and rain jackets, fearing 8 days of rain and wind.
Our trip started early on a Thursday morning with a 3.5 hour van ride to Guayaquil, followed by a 5 hour flight to Santiago, Chile. The following day Mo met us at the Airbnb, and Tomu & Jade instantly jumped on her with giant hugs. That day in Santiago we went to a beautiful giant park called Quinta Normal. The following day we had to wake up at 4:30 am in order to meet the taxi driver at 5 to get back to the airport. It’s no fun waking up small children very early! We took a 3.5 hour flight to Punta Arenas, followed by a 3 hour bus ride to Puerto Natales, gateway to the park. Tomu, Jade, and Luz busied themselves with sticker books on the plane rides.

Then we had one day to provision for our trip. Mo had brought a lot of food down from the States, but we had to fill in the holes for 8 lunches and 7 breakfasts. Unfortunately, that day Luz had a very cloudy pee in the potty, and Mo suspected a UTI, so I took Luz to the ER at the local hospital, leaving Mo & Riki to do the shopping with Tomu and Jade. Luz also had been constipated since we left Ecuador, as well as having an eye infection. They took a urine sample at the hospital, which came back negative for UTI, but the doc prescribed her antibiotics anyways, telling me to buy the antibiotics and he would text me in two days to tell me the results of the urine culture. Back at home, Luz had a fever of 102 degrees, and Mo said, give her the antibiotics anyways. Mo is a flight nurse, and I trust their medical advice! Needless to say, it was a VERY stressful day, dealing with a sick 1 year 9 month old while trying to prepare for a big backpacking trip.
One of our logistics problems was where to leave our extra baggage during the trip. The Airbnb said it wasn’t possible to leave it there. Here we were blessed by the kindness of a stranger. I had asked a woman, Carolina, in the airport in Punta Arenas if she knew of anywhere we could leave our bags, and she had replied no. Turns out her house was two doors down from our Airbnb, and we ran into her on the sidewalk, and she offered to store our bags for us. So kind! So we went over to her house at 10 pm, finally packed for the following day, to drop off our bags.
Day 1
We got up at 6 am in order to make our 7 am bus. It was a 2 hour ride to the park. When we got to the park entrance, it was raining. We all shuffled into the park building to watch a video about Leaving No Trace with about 75 other people. We were the only ones with kids, and we were the focus of a lot of attention. I’m sure they all thought we were crazy with our big packs and our three small people. We used the video time to put rain gear on and give Luz her antibiotics and eye drops. As we filed into the room next door to pay our park entrance fees, I said to Mo, “Look, another kid!” And Mo replied, “Day hiker”. I laughed.
We took a shuttle to the real park entrance, and Riki and I drank lattes while we waited for the rain to abate before beginning to hike. The lattes were from one of those machines where you just press the button, but they tasted great.
Finally, here we were. We set off hiking around 10:30 am. Luz is in a very clingy Mama stage—basically no one else can hold her if I am around. So that settled who would be carrying Luz; which is only fair since the trip was my crazy idea.

We hiked 3.5 miles that first day, mostly uphill. Luz at times complained about being in the carrier, so I let her walk some, which felt like a break for me. It turns out my pace with Luz & my pack was not that much faster than Jade’s pace after all; however, generally Riki would hang back with Jade. I was always surprised with how quickly they arrived at camp. It was really windy as we crossed Windy Pass, and Luz was fussing as we neared camp. I sure was happy to see the sign for Chileno camp!

At Windy Pass--Jade loved the wind!
Turns out that hiking in Torres del Paine is definitely not a wilderness experience—there are SO many people! Also, you can only camp in designated spots, on wooden platforms, that you have to pay for. And at each camping spot, there is a hut (resembling a small ski lodge) that serves beer, pisco sours, quesadillas, eggs & bacon, and $16 burgers. So if we ever felt like we were still hungry after lunch, we could just go into the hut & order some food. I brought 400,000 Chilean pesos (equal to $505) into the park, thinking it would be more than enough for the park entrance fee, the catamaran rides, and any food we wanted to buy. We spent all of it!!
A major bonus for us were the flush toilets and showers at each campsite. We managed to throw all of the wet diapers in the garbage cans of the bathrooms, so we didn’t have to carry 40 used diapers around. We brought the potty because Luz has been pooping in the potty almost exclusively since she was 6 months old, and we figured we would rather dig a hole and bury her poop than carry it with us. Luz was still constipated on the trip, so it helped for her to be able to sit comfortably on her own potty when doing her business.
Mo and Riki set up the tents while I stayed with the three kids inside the hut, out of the wind.

Celebrating a successful first day with Pisco Sours.
Day 2
This was a planned day hike day, up to the lookout for the Torres del Paine (Paine Towers), the most famous image from the national park. Mo sped up to the lookout alone, then came back and watched the three kids while Riki and I hiked up to the lookout. We saw a fox right by the lake, but unfortunately it was pretty cloudy when we arrived at the towers. Tomu, Jade & Luz had fun playing by river.

Actually that was one of my highlights of the trip—seeing how easily the kids amused themselves with their imaginations in nature. They made beds for leaves, turning over rocks and filling the holes with soft stalks of plants. They sent boats of bark or leaves down the rivers.
Jade burned herself on the wood stove at the hut this evening. She burned 3 fingers on her right hand, and they blistered immediately. She cried alternately during dinner, and we kept applying wet cold paper towels.
Day 3
We had to hike 3.5 miles back out the same way, then catch a shuttle to the bus to the catamaran. Mo began hiking with Tomu and Jade as soon as they were ready, about an hour before Riki, Luz and I left. For me, a highlight of this day was the reactions of the other hikers when they saw our kids hiking, and when they say me carrying Luz. One woman said to me, “when I get my baby, I’m going to do that, too.” Another woman said in Spanish, “Es mujer? Increíble, qué cabrona! Qué chingona!” I don’t think she knew I understood, but I smiled to myself—“Is that a woman? Incredible, what a badass!”. Almost everyone smiled at Luz when they saw us on the trail, and many had looks of amazement on their faces as they were struggling up the trail, then they saw us doing the same thing with 3 kids.

We made it back to the entrance station in time for our shuttle, and everyone got a treat drink: for Riki it was beer, for Mo it was Diet Coke, for me it was coffee, and for the kids blueberry juice.

On the one hour bus ride to the catamaran, Jade fell asleep. As I looked out the window at the amazing mountains, I thought, this is why we are here, for the love of mountains. They were just stunning. Jade woke up grumpy and coughing, saying she just wanted to sleep more. So we made her a nest and she kept sleeping while we waited an hour for the boat. We moved her onto the boat and she just kept sleeping. Riki carried her off the boat, and she fussed and cried. It was super windy at Paine Grande, and again I left Riki and Mo to set up the tents while I took the 3 kids inside the hotel. Jade promptly fell asleep again on the couch in the lobby.

It seemed obvious that something was wrong with Jade…we tried to wake her for dinner, but she just wouldn’t wake. I took her temperature, and it was 102.5 degrees. Poor kid. The only medication we had to bring down kids’ fever were some suppositories the doc in Puerto Natales prescribed for Luz. So, while I held up a jacket to shield them from view of the folks in the dinner line, Mo gave sleeping Jade the suppository. Once again, nice to have a nurse friend. When we woke Jade up to go out to the tent, she was actually chipper and energetic. She didn’t want any food, but we had some hope for the morning. The next day was our longest day of walking at 5.7 miles, and I was worried that sick Jade wouldn’t be able to do it. I asked at the campground if we could stay an extra night, and they said they would let me know in the morning.
When I took Luz out to the tent, she freaked out because of the high wind. The rainfly was flapping like crazy, and she was so scared. I thought she might calm once we got in the tent, but no. So I grabbed all my existing cash, and took her into the hotel to plead for a bed. The young woman at the desk said she could give me a bunk bed in room with 3 young women, and that she wouldn’t charge me! Wow, once again, so kind. I slept on the floor in my sleeping bag & pad next to Luz, and I was so relieved not to be in the windy tent with a crying baby.
That night was one of the low points of the trip—so stressful!
Day 4
Jade awoke cheery, with energy, and said she was ready to hike, so we decided to go for it. Mo set off with Tomu and Jade at about 10 am. Riki, Luz and I left around 11 am. It was so windy—like gusting to 50 knots an hour, judging from the spray off the waves on the lake. I was buffeted by the wind, often staggering to the side. Riki was hiking behind me, and he kept trying to hold on to me to support me. Luz hated the wind, and cried when it gusted. After an hour, we stopped, and Riki took the sleeping pad off my pack hoping that I would have less windage. As we walked, and Luz cried, I repeated a mantra to her: “No llores Luz, no llores. No nos gusta el viento, pero seguimos caminando porque somos fuertes y somos increíbles.” “Don’t cry Luz, don’t cry. We don’t like the wind, but we keep walking because we are strong. We are incredible.”. I was talking to myself as much as to her! The scenery was stunning this day, but I really hardly noticed. I was just intent on getting there.

We finally caught up with Tomu, Jade and Mo after about 2 hours of walking. I can’t believe Mo did that stretch alone with the two kids. Once the wind blew Jade down, and blew Mo over too. Mo had to jump over Jade so as not to squish her! I asked Tomu what his technique was when the wind gusted, and he replied to get into a ball like a rock. We ate a lunch of chicken packs, crackers, and baby bel cheese, and continued on. About a mile before reaching Italian camp, Riki said, let me take your pack for awhile. So he walked with my pack on his front, leaving me with Luz and Jade. Jade’s energy was fading, so I carried her piggyback with Luz on the front. Then Mo came back to get Jade. It was a real team effort this day. We took a second break at Italian camp, and then hiked the final 1.2 miles to French camp.

That night at dinner Jade complained of not feeling good, and she would hardly eat anything. She had a fever of 102.5 again, and just wanted to go to bed. I gave her some chewable Tylenol (a present from some Chileno hikers with kids), and took her to bed. As she lay in bed, I told her how strong she was, how she can do anything when she gets big, to hike so far in the wind being sick. Wow. I was so impressed by her. I also felt guilty—like was it too much? Was the very hike making her sick?
Day 5
Another planned rest day for kids/day hike day for adults. Mo set off to the British Lookout, in a basin at the head of the French valley, a 10 mile roundtrip hike. I had no energy and no desire to do the hike, nor did Riki. It didn’t matter that we had come such a long ways, that I probably wouldn’t come back to see that sight. I just didn’t have it in me, and I was fine with that. We stayed in camp, had pizza for lunch, played the card game castle on the picnic tables, and just relaxed with the kids. After dinner we all walked down to the lake to skip some rocks and play. The Chileans at French camp were so kind to us—they gave the kids peaches, chocolate, and chips. Luz turned into a chocolate addict on the trip, eating the chocolate chips out of the trail mix.

Day 6
It rained in the night, so we had to pack up wet tents, but we had just a short hike of 1.5 miles to the campsite called Cuernos, or Horns. It was actually sunny and hot while we hiked. My friend Steph, who had hiked the O loop, recommended Cuernos as the most beautiful camp site in the park. And I agree—it is just beneath the distinctive mountains, with their black bands on the top, and 3 waterfalls coming down. The kids were happy playing in a small sand patch next to the river before dinner.

Luz sleeping in her nest while we set up the tents.

Day 7
It rained again in the night, and my tent was wet inside at the foot of the tent. Both Mo and I had diarrhea in the night—I didn’t even make it to the bathroom (but I made it out of the tent at least!). Mo woke up really sick—they didn’t sleep hardly at all, their body ached all over, and they felt horrible, with alternate chills and feeling hot. Oh no! Riki and I took a little extra weight, and Mo managed to make it the 1.5 miles back to French camp. Mo slept all afternoon, and felt slightly better by the evening.

Day 8
Our last day—we had to hike 5.7 miles, back through the windy territory. I was hoping for no rain and no wind. We wanted to be in Paine Grande by 3 pm, in order to have time to get some food before the catching the catamaran at 5 pm. We figured on 7 hours, the amount of time it took Tomu and Jade for this stretch before. We left around 8 am. Mo carried their normal load and set off with the kids. At one point, Luz and I passed Mo & the kids, and then I realized that her boot had fallen off while she was sleeping. Luckily Jade found it! Luz hiked quite a bit this day. Luz liked to smush these red berries in her hands, so I was constantly on the lookout for them. It was a challenge to keep her entertained in the carrier, and whenever she fell asleep I tried to hike faster.
It wasn’t windy until the last .5 miles or so, and not nearly as strong as before. The kids did great, and we arrived at 1 pm, shaving 2 hours off our previous time.

Jade feeling sick again, and Luz copying her while we waited for the catamaran.
The kids played by the lake and watched a goose family. We had pizza, and as we were waiting in line for the catamaran Jade started to complain that her ear was hurting. She was crying from the pain. Poor kid. She slept again on the catamaran. I feared an ear infection, and finagled a seat on the 6 pm bus back to Puerto Natales for Jade and I, leaving the rest of the crew to take the 7 pm bus, which we had tickets for. I held Jade on my lap as she slept alternately and cried alternately. I told her stories of Princess Jade who liked to travel, and all the places she went. I told her I would take her to the doctor when we got back to Puerto Natales…but she said, no my ear is better now. She’s afraid of doctors because she thinks they will give her shots. She went to bed calmly, but cried a lot that night. Upon arrival in Puerto Natales, Mo went immediately to a pharmacy to get some antibiotics—their throat was killing them, and they knew it was strep throat.

Tomu was such a joy on the trip. He didn’t complain once about being tired—he seemed to have boundless energy, dragging sticks to make trails, picking berries for Luz, etc. He also walked the whole way in these cheap plastic Ecuadorian rain boots, which made some lines on his shins & calves where they rubbed. He carried his own backpack the whole way.

Jade was also amazing, especially considering she burned her hand and got sick! Jade had had a constant snotty nose since leaving Cuenca. She walked almost the whole way, also carrying her own backpack most of the time.

Luz did so well sleeping in the tent, and tolerating being in the carrier for long stretches. She would generally wake up once or twice every night, but go back to sleep when I breastfed her.
The following morning, after we showered, I took Jade to the ER of the hospital. They said she had a sinus infection, with a red inner ear. They gave me antibiotics, plus anti-histamine, and ibuprofen for pain, and a nose spray.
Then we got on a bus for Punta Arenas. We arrived in Punta Arenas with no idea how to get ahold of the Airbnb host or where the Airbnb was located, because Airbnb sent me a reminder with a wrong number for the host. That was pretty stressful. But I scrolled down to find the right number, and we made it there safely. Then another early morning flight back to Santiago the following day.

Watching a street performer in Punta Arenas.

A building in downtown Punta Arenas burned by protesters the week before we visited.
The kids were really excited about riding the underground train (the subway). I had promised them we would do it upon our return to Santiago, and they didn’t forget. We took the subway to the big park again, and the kids played in the spray park area. Mo, Luz and I had a nice dinner our last night, then I went out with Riki later after the kids went down for a second nice dinner.

Luz became a chocolate lover on the trip. She ate all the chocolate chips out of our trail mix, and chooses chocolate for her ice cream flavor.

In Santiago every available wall space is covered in graffiti, mostly anti-government and anti-cop. Also, there is a strong leftist culture—lots of folks with blue or green hair, tattoos, and lots of bike commuters—all things lacking in Cuenca.

“Until dignity is a habit”

“Blind we fight on” A large number of protesters in Santiago have lost an eye due to rubber bullets fired by the police.

“I have more rage than money for bread”

“Damned be the uniformed who wields his weapons against the people”
I almost lost it in the airport as I was walking with the three kids to our gate, and they were pestering me to buy them stuffed animals, and I had a roller bag and my backpack and I was hungry. (Riki had stayed back to buy some Crown at Duty Free). We arrived back in Guayaquil at 1:30 am Chilean time, woke up our 3 sleeping kids, walked through the airport, got a taxi to our Airbnb. And then the van back to Cuenca—we were all so happy to be home!
