been thinking a lot about Dogboys lately which is the title i apply to anything about Jared Updale and Drystan Cadogan which has been so far attempts at novels, series of related and unrelated short stories and multiple stage plays but ive been thinking about them more in the realm of novel writing . my default.

like the story has always been. Jared and Drystan live together but dont remember when or why Drystan moved into Jared’s place. they have misadventures. they eventually end up dating and stay together.

theyre very different people. Jared is an unknown number of years old. he fixes and builds computers for a living. hes super mild mannered. hes not social but hes not anxious around people. he doesnt get embarrassed ever. hes a very dispassionate, logical thinker but thats not to say hes uncaring? he can be very empathetic. he likes his friends but hes very distant a lot of the time. hes schizophrenic. honestly mostly he is just a very nice guy. 

Drystan is 23 and spent his entire life being tough guy who fights. hes incredibly reticent and withdrawn. basically doesnt talk to anyone but specific people. built up an identity as a tough guy but now feels like hes been left behind by everyone around him. spent some time in prison. hates all of his friends. hes gay and hes mostly fine w/ it but has no one he can come out to bcs he doesnt trust anyone. generally just has incredible issues w/ anger and has no way of working through them.

despite being nothing like each other they pretty much instantly become best friends and every form of Dogboys has always been about their extreme loyalty to each other (thats why theyre the Dogboys gettttttt itttttttttttttttttttttttt) 

anyway ive been thinking a lot about Jared in particular recently. Jared is a nice guy, but Jared’s dad was/is infamous Scottish serial killer Caleb “the Red Dog” Updale, who is known to have murdered at least eight children and teenagers, having used Jared (when Jared himself was a small child) as a lure. 

Jared has issues with his dad now. he doesnt ever like to talk about his father, who he despises for like. obvious reasons. but hes very haunted by Caleb’s reputation. hes kinda preoccupied by the idea Caleb is still out there but also by the fact he might have killed Caleb. its not clear what the reality of the situation is. 

but like .. .mostly i just been thinking a lot about the Dog-headed Man that is a real a serial killer running around that might exist or might be an urban legend. its also a figure that is like following Jared in his mind like. as a comparison to everything he does. hes really scared of the idea hes like... destined to follow in his father’s footsteps and the Dog-headed Man is like.. a figure thats accepted that role and is like... a mockery of Jared and an aspirational figure and a nightmare all at the same time. 

idk just... thinking a lot about someone who has this relationship where hes not violent and knows hes not violent but has it hanging over him as like a constant threat. and having your internal fears realised by someone else? like your worst nightmare of yourself is real and talking to you all the time. idk i like the images of it. i lost momentum for this post entirely bye
