Yeah there's a lot of (by modern standards, but also probably by ancient Greek standards for some of em) evil shit Odysseus gets down to but like, loving his wife and being history's biggest wife guy is very much accurate to the epic poem. Yeah, there is that year on Circe's island but to be entirely honest I think that that stay was less a "mmm yess mommy Circe step on my balls please" and more of a "I did 10 years of the Trojan War, that sucked, then literally every island we have gone near since then has been an ecalating series of Clarke Ashton Smithesque nightmares that will haunt me for my remaining days"

He's a "complicated man" as Emily Wilson translates the opening line of the poem, and even the Ancients understood that. I wrote a whole thing once in my journal about how The Odyssey has an incredibly ambiguous ending that hinges entirely upon whether you think the nature of a man can change with experience. Despite that, there's a reason that the first time we see our homie Odysseus in the flesh he is weeping on the beach of Calypso's island. Dude genuinely loved her. It is probably his most moral quality.

I think if people are gonna say Odysseus cheated they should mention Sophocles and Apollodorus as their sources and bring up Callidice and Euippe, because bringing up Circe and Calypso who SA'd him and him being forced to have children with them as him cheating perpetuates the idea that victims of sexual assault are cheaters. There are actual sources for Odysseus cheating but the Odyssey is not one of them, the Odyssey doesn't depict him cheating it depicts him getting RAPED which is entirely different like is Andromache a cheater for having children with Neoptolemus even though she was raped? No she is not. I don't see why people can't wrap their heads around the fact that maybe just maybe calling a victim a cheater is NOT okay.
