You saw him on three occasions.

The first was under the incessant flash of Penacony's lights, the ubiquitous glint of inordinate advertisements trailed behind you like children. He stood amongst the dreamers with fashion and flare: the subtle sway of his right earing was charmed you. While his shoes reflected opulence and splendour. The number pressed onto his neck- similarly pressed against the folds of your mind: the place in which the eyes stare onto the shore and cast spells of what if’s.

Yet, despite the nature of his novelties and the soulful satire of his smile, you paused- traffic and light bending into sound.

What was he? You pondered. Perhaps he is perched in towers and rolls dice like candy; pecking it afterwards. Perhaps he sharpens his shoes as he does with his eyes. Perhaps he stands still in showers of salty rain, drying his cheeks with the rim of his velvet hat.

Was he a dreamer too? You would of blinked in affirmation, griped your breath a touch tighter and trace his footsteps. Lifting it on to the palm of your hand, tucked it into the haven of your pocket, cradling it like an infant, raising it like a lush fern. A portable paradise euphonious and maternal.

From there you shifted your weight onto your good side and tapped your feet to the beat of your heart, matching it to the song of his hushed ingenious breath.

He was here before, you noted. Clearly, not for leisure nor for pleasure. His strides were candid, curt, and clever. Yet, from afar, it was as if the tip of his shoes was his only connection between ground and sky. His steps bounced, rebounding off by sheer force alone; leaping mid-air, leaping with vigour and intention, leaping over wide yawning chasms.

He was galloping towards, not bothering to gaze back. His image blended into one of a horse standing amidst fields teeming with immeasurable and verdant grassland. The horse and their lush nature, a loneliness that can't be contended with as they lowered their gaze like swans. Their mane brushed against skin; preparing to consume the earth generously all on their own- unaccompanied by instruction, coddling or order.

You pause and step back from the slender and poised length of his legs, from the cage of his chest in which gold is born and coiled, from the rings of his eyes that pirouette and roulette. Hence, pondering curiously what kind of bone does not break despite its beatings.

The second time you saw him was when the sharp pungency of grapefruit- twirled with the salt which lined the rim of your glass- produced a sweet taste on the stage of your tongue. At the time the drink was fresh, garnished and plainly odd considering the dim, velvet aura which vibrated through the bar. The taste lingered in your mouth: reminiscent of a sultry summer afternoon.

His hair, you then realized, was scintillating in the gleam of bottles and booze. You wavered a bit, eyes blurry, hot and wet like the sea. He twirled and tuned with the light, the brand of his watch blurring with another sip of rum.

You don't recall any music, however, in that liminal moment between one song and the next, between one sip and a single swallow, your mouth split open in a wide glowing grin.

One foot over the other- glass in hand- serenading in dim light, crash after crash, bass strung with tangible words- it echoed deep and slow.

From there he stares forward, kissing the rim of his glass, dissipating with light as he seems to do. For a split second, he is vulnerable in the state of lassitude.

However, not before unfurling, smiling then melting. He was flying close to the sun; grazing his hands over its rims. Bright young man, you noted.

You pause and step back from his supple lips- insoluble when met with torrents, solid when left to eternity, liquid when set alive, gone when used up.

The third and final time was when his back faced you: his body resting, arms sprawled out in surrender, a single finger twitching. The memory is slipping. Like grains of sand trailing down your hand, like silk that won't hold a knot, like how rest is destined for those who truly slumber. Everecent in nature and poise. There, you wonder soundly, what stars have been bruised onto his back, and if you'd be able to draw them together- into one grand constellation that spans from one end of the world into another infinite void of true rapture.

"What a painting- or pain really."

"For someone who can't physically feel pain, your remark is rather funny," you quip back smoothly, your gaze still set towards the man's slackened joints and inner tenderness.

"You've been sitin' here for hours," bantered Boothill, "Four months really... since we left Penacony!"

You gingerly place the paintbrush down, pausing as you gradually step back from the lifesize portrait. A streak of yellow and purple paint stains your right cheek. "Today I am done."

Boothill raises an eyebrow as he watches you lift the painting onto a mantel: unhurried as a tree. Boothill watched you, morph the image of a stranger into blinding brilliance with each fastidious detail. How your subject- him- echoed volumes, his back against the world, facing tomorrow, embracing the amorous fold of limelight before departing, walking away into nothing with a princely smile and a single wave of his hand.

"Why do you paint him?" Boothill questions, his voice oddly dim and mellow, "You know nothin' about him."

Repose is found on your face as to your reply.

Boothill emits a frustrated sigh and reaches into his pockets; retrieving a lighter, you promptly flick it alive. The flame staring at you; wavering and swaying left then right. Your eyes are subtly idyllic and lulled as if drifting soundly in prayer; relishing the final wave of maudlin and soothing nuance.

"That's why I like him."

You set the portrait aflame.

"Because I know nothing about him."

ABSTRACT Wood artefacts rarely survive from the Early Stone Age since they require exceptional conditions for preservation; consequently, we have limited information about when and how hominins used this basic raw material1. We report here on the earliest evidence for structural use of wood in the archaeological record. Waterlogged deposits at the archaeological site of Kalambo Falls, Zambia, dated by luminescence to at least 476 ± 23 kyr ago (ka), preserved two interlocking logs joined transversely by an intentionally cut notch. This construction has no known parallels in the African or Eurasian Palaeolithic. The earliest known wood artefact is a fragment of polished plank from the Acheulean site of Gesher Benot Ya’aqov, Israel, more than 780 ka (refs. 2,3). Wooden tools for foraging and hunting appear 400 ka in Europe4,5,6,7,8, China9 and possibly Africa10. At Kalambo we also recovered four wood tools from 390 ka to 324 ka, including a wedge, digging stick, cut log and notched branch. The finds show an unexpected early diversity of forms and the capacity to shape tree trunks into large combined structures. These new data not only extend the age range of woodworking in Africa but expand our understanding of the technical cognition of early hominins11, forcing re-examination of the use of trees in the history of technology12,13.

Holy shit. If it's 476,000 years old, it was not made by humans, but by some of our pre-human hominid ancestors.

Visits From the Past

Kensi and Deeks strolled down an aisle lined with canned soups and vegetables, walking side-by-side since they were the only two around at the moment.

“What else do we need?”

“Just the arugula and Reese’s,” Deeks answered slowly, scrolling through the list on his phone. He caught Kensi’s eye. “All part of a balanced diet.”

“Ok, I’ll go to the candy aisle,” Kensi offered.

“Naturally,” Deeks teased. “Hey, should I grab an extra bag of—”

“Marty? Marty Deeks?”

They both turned at his name, Deeks’ hand going towards his waistband, the instinct ingrained even two years removed from the job. He raised an eyebrow at the redhead who’d aligned her cart with theirs.

She smiled expectantly, clearly thinking he’d remember her. Obviously she wasn’t a former suspect or convict based on her response.

“Hi. Uh, do I know you?” he asked, smiling to offset any possible hurt feelings. He hadn’t dated her, he knew that for sure.

“Yes. At first I wasn’t sure it was you, with the beard and all, but I’d recognize your voice anywhere,” she said. “I’m Katie Lomberger. From high school orchestra.”

“Right, Katie.” Deeks nodded. They’d bonded over their mutual love for John Denver, but never had all that much in common. He turned to include Kensi. “Katie played first chair violin.”

“And you played second. You were always so serious when we practiced. Only time someone could get you to stop talking.”

“Somethings never change,” he joked, gesturing to Kensi. “This is Kensi, my wife.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” Kensi said as Katie gasped.

“You’re married? I never expected that,” Katie blurted out. She immediately covered her mouth, looking mortified. “Oh my god, that’s not what I meant.”

“Hey, you wouldn’t be the first to make similar comments,” Deeks assured her, though he would have preferred a different response.

“You once told me you never intended to get married.”

“Yeah, well, I said a lot of things when I was younger that turned out to be inaccurate.” He shrugged and Katie gave him a look that somehow transversed the close to thirty years between them.

“A lot of people worried about you back then. It’s nice to see the great debater actually settled down,” she commented. It shouldn’t have affected him, but he felt oddly embarrassed by her fond regard.

“I’m pretty glad too,” he settled on. “Not too sure about Kensi, though.”

“Stop it,” Kensi chastised him softly, and Katie smiled knowingly.

“Same old Deeks.” She touched his arm. “It was good seeing you again, Marty. Kensi.”

As she walked away, Deeks blew out an extended breath. “Well, that wasn’t awkward or anything.

“Maybe, but I like learning new things about you. And seeing you prove people wrong,” she told him, reaching up to stroke the back of his neck. “Speaking of, how is it that I didn’t know you were in orchestra?”

“I don’t know. Maybe I’ll pull out my violin and see what I remember,” he said. At Kensi’s surprised look, he explicated, “Maybe visiting the past isn’t always such a bad thing. Makes you appreciate the present even more.”

OHOHO I was not expecting a portal, but damn I do like where that sends the story. The space/void dichotomy is fascinating. Roxy and Calliope's involvement shows in the design, but it also may denote different capabilities from the hiveswap portal. Where that portal was built with space and *time* as its primary features, allowing joey to transverse both, this one will probably be the go between for the meat and candy sessions. Or an escape from both completely? Who knows!

Zürich, Switzerland

Tuesday, Sept 10, 2024

Greetings All.  We are in Zurich trying to change our body clocks by 6 hours.  Easier said than done.  We flew yesterday from Detroit to Amsterdam and the idea is to sleep the night away as we transverse the Atlantic - but both Mark and I got maybe 2 - 2.5 hours of sleep during our 7 hour flight.  We left Detroit at 6:30 PM and arrived 7 hours later in Amsterdam at 8:30 AM their time. - but at 1:30 AM our time.  We had a short layover (1 hr and 25 minutes) but in Amsterdam this is JUST enough time to get to your next flight - so we got to the gate and boarded.  The flight from Amsterdam to Zürich is only an hour and while I may have slept on that flight it was not more than 20 minutes.

We got a pretty pricey cab from the airport to our hotel - but we could not face figuring out public transportation as tired as we were.  Sadly - our hotel room was not ready.  We opted for a leisurely lunch in which Mark had cold spicy melon soup and I have garam marsala butter chicken - both delicious - but really all we wanted was a bed to stretch out on.  (Don’t worry I will not tell you everything we eat!!) After lunch we got the news that our room still wasn’t ready and I did something I have NEVER done - feel asleep in a chair in the lobby of the hotel.  But by 3:30 we were in our hotel and we opted for naps - until 5:00.  Hopefully bedtime will come easily...

Enough about us…. Let’s get to our adventure...

The theme for this trip is “OLD STUFF.”  We will start with "real old" and work our way to "OMG WAY WAY OLD."  We, in the US, get so excited when we see a structure from the late 1600s  or early 1700s - but that is a joke in this part of the world - kinda a “baby building.”  

So let’s start with Zürich Switzerland - our current “home."

From what we have seen, Zürich is a beautiful city surrounded by the foothills of the Alps mountains located at the northern end of Lake Zürich and built on Limmat River (pronounced “Limit” that flows from Lake Zürich.  This city has a history going back centuries. 

The town was founded by the Romans a bit over 2,000 years ago. Recent excavations show evidence of settlement even before that -  over 6,400 years ago. 

We explored the old city from about 5:30 to 9:00 - or 17:30 to 21:00 - as any citizen of the world would say - with a a few exceptions - like us.

Surprises:  There are no “walk/don’t walk” signs - pedestrians just have the right of way - PERIOD!

There is graffiti everywhere - I was shocked!

EVERYONE smokes!  Or it seems that way.  DISGUSTING!

I went to buy our 24 hour pass for public transportation and was told to just keep in with us.  If asked we would have to show it - but there is no check in - check out system.  Trust, my friends.

Things we expected:  Public transportation options would be numerous and easy to use and very clean.

People would be helpful and kind

Things would be EXPENSIVE.

We took the tram to old town and at one point saw this:

I think I forgot to say what the Swiss flag looked like - so here you go…

We ate dinner at an outdoor cafe - late - (when in Rome, so they say) and it was outstanding.  Mark had cold roast beef with horseradish sauce and I had “Rösti” with smoked salmon, onions, capers and a dill sauce.  OMG!!!

Rösti is shredded potatoes fried in butter and made into a mound.  You can get lots of different kinds of “Rösti’ and I highly recommend it.  Split with someone  - it is huge.  (It will be breakfast for us tomorrow.)

Tomorrow - we will explore more than the transportation system.  I’m going to bed. It is 22:00 here and I'm hoping to wake up for the first - and maybe only - presidential debate - which would be 3:00 AM here. If I do - I'll watch it live. If I don't - I will be more rested when I watch it later Either way - we are in Zürich rooting for Kamala!!

Autobot Jazz Week day three! Prompt: Candy/Sweets. Jazz wants to play the Pocky game, naturally using Energon treats. Song is “I Want Candy” by Bow Wow Wow.

Ficlit: Candy Conflict

“If you wanted a kiss, you could’ve just asked.” Prowl strained backwards, not wanting to break their embrace but also trying to avoid the Energon treat, flipping up and down rapidly in a playful manner from its place clenched between his Conjunx dente plates.

Jazz scowled in irritation and removed the candy from his lips so he could speak clearly. “The kiss isn’t the point. I want to try the game. You know, try something different.”

The taciturn Security Officer squirmed. Why did Earthlings have to come up with such silly ideas to waste time? And why was his mate so fascinated by the little ones odd habits? “Couldn’t we just make out, then eat the candy like normal people?”

Jazz growled in frustration and threw up his servos in a rare sign of hostility. “Well excuse me for wanting to indulge in the local cultures. I mean we’re stuck here on Earth, might as well enjoy it. But fine, if my hobbies offend you so greatly, I’ll take my candy and find someone who does want to play!”

His beloved was half way to their quarters door when Prowl registered what he had just said. “Wait a minute! Jazz, hold on, you’re going to just go off and…” he ironically decided on a human term “snog some other bot?!”

The Master Spy coldly glared at him from over his shoulder and snapped “First off, like I said, the kiss ain’t the point! And even if it was, why not? You weren’t the first Mech I ever kissed, and it doesn’t have to be sexy, it can be an innocent kind of thing. I’m your Conjunx but that doesn’t mean you own me Prowl of Praxus!”

“No, no, of course not!” Prowl waved his servos and shook his head, “I’d never presume such a thing Love. It’s just…”

Seeing his one and only look so hurt made Jazz exvent and pinch where his visor rested on his olfactory sensor. He slowly turned with his servos spread wide in a slightly pleading gesture. “Look Prowl, I love ya darlin’ but there are solar cycles where I could just deck ya.” He chuckled in a sad way. “We’ve been Conjunx a long time and hardly get to see each other we’re so busy with our duties, and we never know if we’re gonna see each other ever again whenever we go on missions… I just wanted to play a little game I thought was cute, is this really worth arguing over?” He dropped the box of Energon treats into a small trash receptacle and looked so rejected it physically hurt the other Autobot to witness.

Prowl got up from his place sitting on their recharge berth and quickly transversed the distance between them. He embraced his Conjunx Endura tightly and peppered his helm with kisses. “I’m sorry Jazz. You’re right, you never ask for anything and this was such a simple request. I’m sorry I made such a big deal out of this.”

Before Jazz could respond, Prowl left the warmth of their embrace and retrieved the box of candy. He took his love by the servo and guided him back to their starting point sitting on the berth.

Jazz was grinning like a Sparkling with a new toy as he dug out a fresh treat with every intention of reinitiating the game, when he was interrupted yet again by an oddly suddenly shy Prowl.

“Heh… hey love?” The CSO mumbled, avoiding optic contact and his face plates were dusted a pretty blue blush.

“Yeah handsome, what is it?” Jazz was very intrigued now. What could possibly have his normally stoic mate acting like an unchristianed youngling about to have his first tumble?

“Who… uh, who would you have gone to if I hadn’t stopped you from leaving?” Prowl murmured. His EM field was radiating arousal despite his bashful nature.

‘You adorable, sweet, secretly kinky mech.’ Jazz thought to himself as he slowly grinned like he normally only did when getting the upper hand in battle. “You really want to know darlin’?” He drawled and felt his engine hum happily at the shy nod he received in answer.

“Then you better win the Pocky game. That can be your trophy.”

...even though not a lot has changed. He just has some new bling.

For those new: Candy Corn Vampire is the Sixth Celestial, a self-made Lord of Mirrors, trans man, on-and-off husband to Deathly Toll Bells, alien sugar-consuming vampire who rarely drinks blood, extremely extroverted, lover of trashy romance sitcoms, causer of migraines, yada yada yada he has a lot going on. All you need to know is that he is a wildcard of abilities that include (1) being able to transverse into the mirror world (2) reflectivity (3) bulletproof and impervious to most causes of physical harm (4) telepathy and (5) laser projectiles. He also mentors Scarlet Frost and is a very helpful teacher to her.
