A post is going around about fics you consider classics in the Snowbaz fandom. I’d like to take it a step further by asking …

What are five fics you consider your inspiration/influences for writing, plus one of your fics which you think best represents what you want to bring to the fandom?

5. Hang the Moon by @captain-aralias

@captain-aralias is, to me, the snowbaz fandom fic writer of our time. Her commitment to detail, to nailing Rainbow’s voice, while infusing every fic with a heart and purpose that will leave you changed. Every fic of hers is chef’s-kiss-perfection but I’m highlighting Hang the Moon specifically as a fic I often think about (Baz, wet tennis clothes, helping Simon fight the merwolves), and a fic that was my introduction to what fanfics could be/do. I think I finished this fic and just stared at the wall for an hour because I was just like, oh. Oh.

4. The Pitch by basic-bathsheba

Local Hero is one of my favorite fanfics but I wanted to highlight this fic because it’s just such a powerful and understated story. It’s love in the details. This Simon is the model for all of my Simon’s, just a complete simp for Baz haha but also a man who is comfortable and confident being the man who loves Baz even if he doesn’t get to claim it publicly.

3. Stay Up With Me by @sharkmartini

Not sure what to say about this that hasn’t been said a million times. It’ll break your heart; it’ll put you back together. The concept is brilliant and the exploration of two Simon’s will definitely put your emotions through a wringer. Time travel/what-if fics will always grab my attention but this one in particular makes the same case Rainbow posed in Carry On: what if the villain isn’t the villain? And takes it a step further, because Simon realizes he could be the villain, too. Absolutely beautiful.

2. Can’t Find My Way Home by @carryonsimoncarryonbaz

This is one of those fics that just has so much heart and sweetness. I love a good second chance AU, and this one has such Hallmark vibes in the best way. I just love the slow burn of it, and the amazing ending. A perfect holiday fic to snuggle up with. Reading this feels like being cozy up by the fire with someone you love. Actually writing this makes me wanna reread this so much; now that I live with actual Fall I wanna feel cozy like this again.

1. Basil Pitch’s Diary by @bookish-bogwitch

I know it’s a bit weird to rec a WIP as an influence, especially one that’s being written as we speak, but working with/beta-ing Em’s works have made me a sharper, smarter writer. I know this fic is a classic in the works and it’s something I think about on a weekly basis. The Baz Em gives us, to me, feels like canon Baz taken to the next level. What if Baz was the villain … but only to himself? Em’s writing really is just economical in the best way; every line hits, every paragraph teaches me something. And then the heart. It’s genuinely so hard to do what she does and I’m so lucky to get to see her work in realtime.

I think, at the end of my fandom career, I want this to be the snowbaz fic people associate with me (Spadey being a close second hahaha). But I do feel like it’s got a lot of fandom in-jokes, humor, and sweetness, plus the fun high-stakes of them being in the spotlight. I got to celebrate the Austin I love and miss, as well as poke fun at my own hipster upbringing. I put a lot of Me™ in this fic and it always feels so lovely when people like it. Besides, I got to work with the amazing @tea-brigade and their art just takes this fic to the next level. A dream collab.

Happy WIPsday! I have been wanting to post for approximately 2 weeks, but it's been chaosville at my house, so I haven't done it. I'm not seeing any tags, so I'm going to start us off this week!

So.... in the past two weeks I've written almost 2,000 words on Simon's Two Mums AU and about 4k words on Firstprince Soulmate BS. This is a lot for me! I'm excited about both of them! Soulmate BS is marinating after having had a very important scene written, so finally (already, always) got some overdue attention, and I'm really enjoying where it's going.

Simon's two mums:

Then, mum says, "Is it standard practice to cast spells on students without their agreement or parental assent?"  "I'm sorry?" [omitted for spoilers] says.  "Mum," I hiss at her.  "I'm sorry, Simon, but I'd be very curious to know if this is a common experience for students here, or if it's something that's happening particularly often to my son." Her voice is hard and angry. Her lawyer voice, the one that knows she's going to win, and doesn't mind letting you know as well.  "It's…" [spoiler again] sits back down. "It is, actually, quite common, but it is also very likely that it's happening particularly often with Simon."  Mum seems surprised at how easily he goes along with her. "I'd appreciate if you would draft a policy document that provides students and their parents with more explicit knowledge of circumstances in which they may be subject to magical correction or intervention."  "Of course, yes," [this person's name would spoil you] says. "Absolutely." He moves to stand again, and then sits back down. "Is there anything else before Simon returns to class?"  "No," Mum says. "Unless you have anything you'd like to talk about, Simon?" Mummy asks, and I could cry. I almost do.

Your concierge, Alana, will be in touch within 24 hours to facilitate contact with your soulmate.  "Quite," Henry says. Alex can feel his heartbeat in his stomach, suddenly. It's a little bit nauseating, like he might throw up.

hey, what's up— *record scratch* *freeze frame* yep, that's me. posting a wipsday for the first time in months. you're probably wondering how i ended up in this situation.

He just knows that Snow was stupid enough to get caught too, and now they're trapped together, and Baz hasn't had blood in three days...

Hello! Long time no see. Thank you for all the tags in my absence. True blue adulthood has been kicking me in the proverbial balls. (Being overworked and underpaid and forced to engage in power struggles with other people’s children leaves very little time for creativity.) EDIT: okay I just got back from my second job and this one student made me laugh my ass off so I like kids again. Also, I forgot my headphones so I’m writing this to you from a very dismal bus ride since one of the only things keeping me sane is listening to the Anne of Green Gables audiobooks on my commutes. (You really gotta romanticize the mundane if you’re gonna survive in this world.)

And because of the Anne Shirley of it all, inspiration is striking every once in awhile. I’m writing, I suppose. Progress is incremental and I’m sorry there’s been such a lapse between IKABIKAM chapters. This one is very intense and I’m plagued by self-doubt and lack of motivation.

Allow me to indulge in a meaty WIPsday. I bring to you two excerpts relating to two songs that are heavily inspiring me for this chapter. One excerpt is Baz. One excerpt is Simon. But do not be fooled, the songs are for both of them at different times. The common theme? ANGER.

The View Between Villages (Extended) by Noah Kahan

The road turns from asphalt to cobblestone as we pass definitively back in time. The moat. The ramparts. The inner gate. It doesn’t evade me that Snow avoids looking at one thing for too long.

Memories flood my vision, haunting the Great Lawn with dozens of mirages. I breathe them in—all the feelings, all the Sunday afternoons, all the petty fights and words I wish I’d never said. They pass by, but refuse to land in the past. Not while we’re still moving through it.

Seventeen Going Under by Sam Fender

I stare at a portrait of a young Davy Cadwallader. Seventeen. Full of fire. No blood on his hands yet. The glossy picture frame glares my reflection back at me. My thin frown is shrouded in shadows of my father—a pair of sad, angry eyes split between us. I think about how punchable his face is and then how half of it’s my own.

It’s a marvel that Baz is the one with a permanently broken nose.

They’d never hugged. Penny thought that was weird. The Mage had made Simon his heir two years ago. Good dads usually hugged their sons.

Simon didn’t mind. He didn’t like hugs that much (they felt like being trapped) and he knew the Mage didn’t think of himself as anyone’s dad. He was Simon’s headmaster. It would be weird if they hugged.

I've been working on Ch 6 of Hiding Out in the Open for a not insignificant chunk of time, but I've either been too busy doing that or just feeling like it's too rough to share. Until today. (So convenient that I feel like it’s ready to share since I’m posting it tomorrow for my dearest @artsyunderstudy's birthday ❤️😂.)

Please join me for our irregularly scheduled Baz spiral which I think might(?) technically be six sentences:

Snow’s kissing my neck now, working his way along my throat in a way that turns my insides to jelly. So naturally, it’s the perfect time for Father’s voice to join the cursed chorus of doubts in my head. Even though he seemed resigned when I called last week to break the news that actually I would be abandoning the hallowed halls of Oxford for the unwashed masses of the LSE in the autumn—thank you for that Daphne—he still managed to forward one brand new objection I can’t seem to completely set aside. “Your aunt tells me you’ve been…seeing someone” —(faithless hag)—“and while I certainly hope you have better judgement than to do this because of a”—he’d pointedly cleared his throat at this point—“romantic entanglement, it remains my duty as your father to warn you. You cannot pin your hopes and dreams on the fickle affections of a twenty-year-old boy”—(yes, ambiguously referring to a twenty-year-old boy who could also be me is the closest my father has ever come to acknowledging my sexuality)—“because while it may feel like it’s forever right now, believe me when I tell you that young love very rarely lasts. Basil—please don’t throw it all away over some silly summer fling that’ll be over before Samhain.”

Ahhhhh, Hello friends!! I miss you all so much. I wanted to be with you today in this little way. I think I'm realizing more and more that one of the best things we can do for our creative pursuits is to keep in community with friends, cheering each other on. I'm trying to prioritize being here again.

Do any of you struggle with not knowing which writing genre to focus on??? Like say you've written some things that you like but are like...do I put this in a fanfic? Do I save it for an OC story?? Do I turn it into a book of poetry and prose? What if I use it now but then it would have been better saved for this other thing in the future?!

I find that terrifying and I'm feeling really kind of frozen right now. Anywho. Thoughts on how you move past that??

So here is a short thing (I didn't count sentences, I think we've given up on that, right?)...I'm writing a lot of vignettes lately that (see above) I'm not sure where I will put them ultimately. But well, they are all about sex and intimacy and love and connection and fear etc etc so.

So sexy type thing below the cut. Sending tons of love to you all and hoping you are feeling creatively energized and if not, let's help each other get there and stay there! <3

At 4 a.m. I’m awoken by the sound of their breathing and the soft rasp of their hand moving, chasing their need. I turn, sleep-slow, toward them; a planet turning toward the sun, called to warmth. I lie in stillness and watch the rise of their chest, their shoulders, every curve illuminated in the diffused light of pre-dawn. 

In this moment I want something like cradling them and something like driving them to the edge of madness. To both soothe them and watch them bleed, and to taste it.

In the end they sense my eyes on them and reach for me, sure fingers wrapping around my wrist, drawing my hand to them. Time is slow and I move with honey in my bones.

We’ve entered some plane of existence outside of life in the city. Life beyond this small room has paused, no sounds of sirens, every car stopped, the entirety of the city holding its breath.

I basically haven't touched the baubles at all since I showed you the Barbie one last week... They're just not a lot of fun to make. But I sat down yesterday, put Brooklyn 99 on (again) and did some work. So here they are:

I'm very pleased with the pride bauble, I just need to work on adapting some other pride flags now. There's only 2 weeks until the faire though so other flags might have to wait until next year, I just have too much left to do for this one!

I posted a new chapter of finally (already, always) this week, so if you haven't read that yet, please do! Here's six times two sentences from a future chapter where one of the mums are giving Simon the talk:

There's a box of condoms in the bathroom the next morning.  "Those are for you," Mummy says, reaching across me to grab her toothbrush.  "Mum, I'm not…"  "Take them back to school with you. Maybe you won't need them, that's fine. But maybe you will, and I don't want you to have to ask the headmaster to drive you to the shops to get them, okay?" I stick my toothbrush in my mouth so I don't have to answer, even though I've already spit and rinsed my brush, and I know she saw me do it.  "We're here to talk if you need to talk or if you have questions about anything. I know we don't have any practical experience, but…"  "Mum!" I regret the toothbrush thing now. I should have put it back in the cup and walked out of the bathroom. 

I've also been doing some mural painting, and honestly, I'm getting so close to finished that my ADHD-adjacent-brain is about to call it done. 🤷

Six Some Sentence Sunday

Agothra hovered over the wrestling figures below. Snowzilla grunted a hello, then managed to free an arm to wave. Bazu Jaguar just looked up at her, seemingly dazzled by her beauty. For a moment, none of them moved other than the soft flutter of the moth’s wings. Then Snowzilla looked between the robot and Agothra. Bazu’s chrome reflected her light, shining golden and lovely. Snowzilla grabbed the metal face roughly and jerked it downwards, then bared its teeth and roared. A sonic wave struck Bazu directly between its glowing eyes. The robot moved swiftly, all of its attention back on its opponent. It grasped Snowzilla’s muzzle and pinched the mouth closed contemptuously. The kaiju didn’t like this. It bucked and fought. In an instant, the two were rolling and tumbling again, pushing and shoving at each other. You’ve got to be kidding me, Agothra said.

This snippet is again from my Godzilla AU. A kaiju is a generic term for these giant monsters. Agothra is a portmantau of Agatha and Mothra.
