"What is that?"
"It's a grasshopper."
"It's brown."
Cass sighs, squatting down next to Yo-Yoji. "Just becayse it's brown doesn't make it not a grasshopper."
Yo-Yoji keeps making that same exasperated look where his face is all scrunched up and he looks almost disgusted—but he's really just confused. "But aren't grasshoppers, like, green?"
"Not necessarily," Max-Ernest says. Cass and Yo-Yoji are squatting in the mud, just on the riverbank, squinting their eyes to see the little creature in between the blades of grass. There's dirt on their faces and mud coating their shoes. Max-Ernest, on the other hand, is perched up on a big rock, looking almost like a fox with his spikey hair and jeans and turtleneck sweater. He's perfectly clean and planning on staying that way. "Some species are brown. They're just most commonly green. And they're always represented as green in cartoons and stuff so your brain just kind of assumes they're all green. Actually—"
"Thanks, Max-Ernest!" Cass calls, glancing at him with an awkward, tight-lipped smile. If she doesn't stop him, he'll go on forever.
"Yeah, thanks, Max-Ernest," Yo-Yoji agrees, a little absently, still staring at the grasshopper curiously, disbelievingly, almost like he thinks it's just a figment of his imagination and will disappear at any given moment.
Then the littloe bug twitches and moves a leg, and Yo-Yoji jumps back, losing his footing, almost falling in the river before he stumhles around and manages to stand up. "Yo!" he exclaims. When it moved it's leg, it flashed the red-with-black-polka-dots color of the inside of it's body. "It's red." His voice is filled with trepidation and bemusement if not fear and he definitely thinks he's just hallucinating now.
"So it is," Cass says, amused. She's spent so much time in nature and read so many news articles (and has spent the past year infiltrating an alchemical cult) that she doesn't think anything could really surprise her—especially not a bug being an extravagant color.
"That's pretty normal, actually," Max-Ernest starts up again. "A lot of bugs are weird colors or spotted. Not just bugs, actually. Some—"
"Thank you, Max-Ernest," Cass says again, curtly, voice clipped. She tries to be gentle and subtle in the way she cuts him off becayuse she knows it's not really his fault the way he rambles, that he can't help it, but it gets difficult to keep her cool when he does it all the time.
Now that it's been confirmed that the grasshopper is, in fact, real and that he's not going insane, Yo-Yoji is looking at it curiously, head tilted and face softened. "That's kinda cool," he breathes. "Now I wanna see it again."
He squats next to Cass again and picks up a stick, stretching it out to try and coax the grasshopper into moving again.
Cass clamps her hand around his wrist and stops his arm. "Hey! What're you doing?"
Yo-Yoji huffs, slumps his shoulders. "I'm not gonna hurt it."
She rolls her eyes. "That doesn't matter. You're gonna bother it. Leave it alone."
"I just wanna see the red and the spots."
"How would you like it if some giant poked you with a stick to see your green hair?" she asks, making a face.
"Fine," he whines, throwing the stick to the side. But he cheers up again when the creature moves anyway and he gets to see it's colorful underside all the same. It hops up high once—and then it's gone.
Cass stands up and walks across the riverm using the heads of the slippert rocks jutting out from the ground. Yo-Yoji follows her. Max-Ernest stays right where he is and calls out to them: "Be careful!"
The current is rushing through but the tide is low, and they could very well walk right through without using the rocks and the water would only semi-agressively lap at their ankles.
"Calm down, Max-Ernest!" Cass yells back, stepping down onto the other side of the riverbank, Yo-Yoji close behind her.
Max-Ernest whimpers and then stretches his legs. They're starting to hurt now, standing in the same position for so long without so much as walking around or moving. He should probably get down or at least sit to give his legs a break, but he's not taking the risk of getting anything dirty.
And then he shrieks; Yo-Yoji slipped off a rock and crashed into the water.
Cass, on the other hand, doubles over in laughter.
Yo-Yoji groans as he gets up, shaking water out of his hair like a dog and wringing out his clothes. "Shit!"
Cass. Cannot. Stop. Laughing.
"I told you to be careful!" Max-Ernest scolds.
"Yeah, I know," Yo-Yoji moans.
Cass laughs some more.

Can you imagine the main three on a field trip to an art museum? Like, Yo-Yoji making fun of the statues for various reasons—poses, the fact that a lot of them are naked and have small d—, Max-Ernest trying to explain the significance of the piece and Cass chastising him for being immature (while secretly finding it kind of funny).
