Sisters Be Dune It For Themselves
Tumblr media
The success of the movies probably made something like Dune: Prophecy inevitable and the first season of this show is something of a tightrope act: is it going for a lukewarm Game of Thrones in spaaaaaaaace type of a thing or do they have something more interesting in mind? It was threatening to go one way (and honestly, I was getting a little bored of it) but it managed to bring me back and get me engaged enough to decide that they definitely have something more interesting in mind.
This show decides to go 'all-in' on the concept of a prequel, taking place 10,000 years before the events of Dune and about a century or so after humanity's final triumph against the thinking machine armies of Omnius at the Battle of Corrin.
That interesting piece of Dune lore made me decide to plunge into the world of Dune prequels and I found myself reading The Butlerian Jihad (from the Legends of Dune Trilogy) before I realized that it was probably Sisterhood of Dune that I should really be reading and thus, am somewhat annoyed by the fact that I'm probably going to wind up reading six Dune novels that aren't actually part of the mainline series, assuming this show goes the distance and last for a few seasons. (For the record: prior to cracking into The Butlerian Jihad, I had read Dune. Just Dune. Nothing else. No mutating into a giant sandworm God-Emperor. Just Dune.)
But, back to Dune: Prophecy
I like the fact that they set this 10,000 years before the movies. It means that you don't have to pay attention to the events of the original books/movies/series at all, unless you want too. You're still in the same universe of course- so, spaceships and the like look similar. You've got Fremen, the Bene Gesserit, etc-- and all the maneuverings of the Great Houses, but humanity has a very different relationship with technology at this point in the timeline. (Thinking machines bad, very, very bad-- but guess what the Sisterhood uses to track their genetic bloodlines? Oh, that's right... a thinking machine!)
At the heart of the Sisterhood--- not quite the Bene Gesserit we know from the movies yet, but getting there, a sort of proto-Bene Gesserit are two sisters, Valya (Emily Mortimer) and Tula (Olivia Williams) Harkonnens exiled from their family and part of a faction within the Sisterhood that wants to prepare for a great Reckoning prophesized by the founder of the Order, Mother Raquella (Cathy Tyson.) We find out that Valya came to power after a factional struggle: there were Butlerians who wanted to ensure that the Sisterhood helped to keep humanity free from the dangers of technology and there was Valya's faction which wanted control. Her secret- the secret that haunts this entire show is that Valya seized power by using The Voice (yes that voice) to force Raquella's granddaughter, Dorotea to kill herself.
30 years later and Valya and the Sisterhood are doing the usual Bene Gesserit things. They are preparing for their reckoning, maneuvering the Great Houses deftly behind the scenes, and when Princess Inez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) is betrothed to the scion of House Richese, the young Pruwett (Charlie Hodson-Prior) everyone is pleased: the Sisterhood thinks the marriage will stabilize the Corrino Bloodline for generations and maintain the Emperor Jarrico's (Mark Strong) control over Arrakis in the meantime.
However, the arrival of Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel) changes everything. He has some kind of power that immolates Pruwett and Sister Katya as well and makes it clear that he wants the Emperor's trust at the expense of the Sisterhood. Suddenly on the outs with the Emperor, Valya and Tula find themselves confronting their past and racing to find out just who Desmond Hart is and more to the point, what the heck this power of his is because he keeps turning people into crispy critters somehow and that's not cool.
The upshot of all of this is this: Valya and Tula realize who Desmond is and more to the point, realize that someone else is grasping for control. Valya, Inez, and Keiran-- because this is Dune, remember- inevitably find themselves on Arrakis.
Interestingly: the whole burning to death thing can be resisted by facing your fear-- the Litany Against Fear that seems to be part and parcel of Bene Gesserit teachings by the time of Paul Atreides is not present here and they only just seem to be realizing it's potential. Whether the origin of it has its roots here and gradually becomes less necessary over time, we don't yet know, but it's an exciting wrinkle (along with them having a secret thinking machine) that brought me fully back on board with this when I was really asking myself if a Game of Thrones in spaaaaaaaace was really all that worth it.
Overall: Teeters on the edge of being boring, but comes back strong at the end to get you very, very interested in a second season. Great cast, great story and can I just say once again how much I love the distance between this show and the events of the movies? Brilliant movie and I can't wait to see what they do next. My Grade: *** out of **** Solid first season, let's see what they do with the next one.

blake abbott - ten years later
age: 28 occupation: performer   relationship status: in a relationship with landon knightingale  children: (very early) pregnant  in the past 10 years:
blake finished university and instantly found herself in her first west end show. she was in the ensemble for hairspray. hairspray was the musical that made blake fall in love with musicals so it felt like it was pretty perfect. she was in hairspray for two years - the second year she was there, she was made into the inez understudy. before she moved onto her next show. she has since performed in rock of ages (ensemble/understudy sherrie. 24), chicago (as mona/ensemble. 25),  the last five years (as cathy. 26-27), anastasia (as anastasia. 27) & steetcar named desire (as stella 28.).
throughout the first few years of her career, she and wren were together and they were incredibly happy. they were both so ambitious and they supported each other whole heartedly. a triumph for wren, was a triumph for blake and vice versa. it seemed like things were really good for the two of them. for a while, at least, it seemed like they could manage both their relationship and their careers. although, eventually, the fact that they didn’t really have time for one another, took its toll on them. there wasn’t really any drama. it was just a conversation and it boiled down to this: either they ended their relationship so they could focus on their careers, or they took a step back from their jobs to focus on one another. it was a mutual decision to go with the former. there was still a lot of love there - on both sides - but they had things that they wanted to do and they didn’t want to stand in each others ways.
blake threw herself into work, then. she made sure that she was taking the best roles possible for herself, to better her career. she wanted to make sure that she was making a name for herself - and she absolutely was. anyone who was anyone in the theatre industry, knew blakes name. it was all she had ever wanted - but she didn’t want it to stop there. getting what she wanted only made blake want to work harder, so that she could keep that status.
about a year ago, blake was performing in anastasia as the title character, when a familiar face was in the audience. she hadn’t realised that he was there until she left out of stage door and recognised him instantly. despite getting along during her late teen years, blake and landon had lost contact so she was delighted to be able to see him again - and even happier when he left her his number. the pair spent as much time as they could together, going on dates and getting to know one another all over again. it didn’t take long for them to make things official.
it was only a couple months into their relationship, when blake found out that she was pregnant. at first, she was conflicted. she was finally starting to get more consistent work, making a name for herself and she knew that taking time off to look after her baby would throw a spanner in the works. but blake also hadn’t realised quite how much she had wanted it, until it was happening. she was incredibly nervous about telling landon, not sure how he would react, but once she realised that he was happy about it, things seemed to fall into place. she is still very early days - and she hasn’t really told anyone - blake is incredibly excited to become a mum and to start on the next part of her journey, with landon.
although blake loves performing in musicals, more recently she has wanted to move onto just straight plays. after auditioning for a few, she was cast as stella in a streetcar named desire. her opposite being wren. blake was nervous about how things were going to be with the two of them spending that much time together but it was fine. they were professional but because things hadn’t really ended badly, they were able to be friendly too. having wren back in her life wasn’t something that blake expected but it was something that she was really happy about.
blake still has about six months to go - she doesn’t even have a bump yet - but she’s so excited to become a mum, to see how she and landon were going to be as parents. she’s also excited to see what her career brings with the new line of work. everything on the horizon for blake is exciting for her and she can’t wait to get started.

I know you're in a better place and one day I'll see you again but it's killing me we can't be face to face I miss my best friend. I know it's a part of life but I wasn't ready to say goodbye.
4 years today. 4 years already. I miss my granny. Her sense of humor, her advice, her smile, her patience, her stories about how curve lake used to be, and the people she knew. Christmas at her house. The drives to nowhere we would go on. I spent more time with my granny Inez then I ever did with anyone else. Wish I could walk in her house and hear her voice or see her sitting there in the green chair she had looking at the lake out the window. Or watching TV. Or being in her kitchen while she baked. And our late night summer swims...tell auntie cathy hi and I miss her..... I wish my kids had the same relationship with their grandparents that I had with mine.

Metropolitan Realty, Morgan Stanley Snap Up LIC Industrial Property for $106M
MANA Products has sold its 220,000-square foot industrial asset at 27-11 49th Avenue in Long Island City, Queens to Metropolitan Realty Associates (MRA) and Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing for $105.5 million, Commercial Observer has learned.
The sale-leaseback deal closed last week, and was led by CBRE’s Doug Middleton and Will Pike.
MANA Products, a developer and manufacturer of beauty and skincare products utilizes the facility — which sits on 2.48 acres and houses 615 employees — as its mission-critical manufacturing and distribution facility.
The company was acquired by Traub Capital in 2020.
Under the terms of the transaction, MANA executed a 15-year triple-net-lease at closing with three, five-year renewal options, underscoring the firm’s long-term commitment to this site, according to sources familiar with the deal.
Thanks to its extensive research and development capabilities, the company also acts as an incubator and provides leading beauty brands — including Estée Lauder, MAC, Glossier and Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty — plus makeup artists and celebrities with the latest innovations in both formulation and technology. Further, MANA owns 95 percent of its formulas today.
With ease of connectivity to both Manhattan and Brooklyn, the property is in a prime location to distribute goods on behalf of its clients.
The deal is the latest of several Queens purchases for MRA. In August 2021, founder Joseph Farkas told CO the firm had raised $50 million of equity for a strategic investment fund focused on Long Island industrial assets, and already acquired a fully leased 94,000-square-foot warehouse, to boot.
The fund’s inaugural transaction involved the purchase of a single-story industrial property at 5 Inez Drive in Bay Shore, N.Y., alongside longtime MRA equity partner Angelo Gordon for $14 million. The warehouse property is currently occupied by national logistics and fulfillment company Ruby Has through April 2025.
In March, the same joint venture secured a $19.1 million loan from IDB Bank for the refinancing of an approximately 220,000-square-foot, two-story retail property in Nanuet, N.Y., Commercial Observer has learned.
MANA officials could not immediately be reached for comment. MRA, Morgan Stanley weren’t immediately available for comment. A CBRE spokesperson declined to comment.
Cathy Cunningham can be reached at [email protected].
