Determined Dons Deny Celtic with Historic Victory

Thwarting all expectations, Aberdeen have overcome Celtic at the peak of Scottish football, returning the Scottish Cup to Pittodrie for the first time since 1990.

In fact, it’s the first time Aberdeen have won against the hoops in any competition since 2018, and the first time Celtic have lost in the cup final since 2002. So anyone putting money on the Dons tonight would’ve felt validated in their madness.

Despite averaging about 15% possession, the Dons somehow made it through. An own goal apiece saw the teams level at full time, and inertia kept that scoreline unchanged until penalties, which the men in red eventually emerged victorious 4-3. Mirroring their epic 9-8 penalty shootout in 1990, it’s a day of defying statistics for Aberdeen, taking the highest honour Scottish football can bestow despite their average-at-best league record.

More importantly though, it’s put a dampener on Celtic’s recent dominance. This would’ve been their ninth treble, and sixth in just seven years.

Haunted by its infamous duopoly, where either Celtic or Rangers have won more than the lions share of trophies, football fans in general might just be glad that someone else has won something
