She came, she saw, she frickin’ nailed it. @nicolaspirigofficial took an emphatic win at @challengegrancanaria (24/4). With a classy field of talent on the start line, it was hard to pick a winner, especially with the likes of @lisanorden1 @katr_matthews @sarissadevries and @saraperezsala to name a few, all with their eyes on the prize. : The 39 year old Swiss 2012 Olympic Champ drew a few looks when she racked her road bike—the only female in the pro field not on a TT bike—but it was well suited to this course, as was her pedigree. A seriously hot day in the office... some of the best of the best of the worlds triathlon scene came to The Canary Islands, to test their mettle, to test out their months in lock-down training and to test this half distance punchy rolling hot triathlon course ... @challengegrancanaria you did not disappoint. : : Jordi, his team and the @anfigroup hosting an absolute belter of an event, despite Covid restrictions, from the outside looking in, it all seemed to run smoothly. Flash Vlerken . . Yvonne was 100% right when She told me to ‘look out for a pink flash” on the #challengegrancanaria course... Third out of the swim and 3 mins down on the super fast @schaerer_celine it wasn’t too long before Celine was being hunted down on the undulating Bike course with Vonsy eventually taking the lead on the 2nd loop (of 5). . A stalwart in the triathlon game, Yvonne kept down the pace and power through the bike and run course, so it was only a matter of who would take 2nd & 3rd. . If @challengegrancanaria was a boxing match, then this would have been the heavy weight championship of the world, with an undercard of triathlon talent all coming to take a swing at the title and walk away in triathlon glory. : First up with a few sweet jabs was @samlaidlow who was first out of the swim. The look on Frodeno’s face was priceless as they exited the first loop before heading back into Anfi Bay for a second time. (See 2nd pic). : Ding ding 🛎 Round Two: Laidlow lead the race for the first 10km on the bike before a TKO from a gnarly wet corner took him out of contention, crashing out with Brit @tom_davis1995 .. from then on it was just a fast and punchy rolling 4-loop 90km coastal bike course that was being dominated by two main groups. Frodeno was in the lead bike group with @pablitopiny @giulio.molinari and @nickastelein whilst Frodeno’s biggest rival, German compatriot @patricklange1 was 90 seconds back in the second group. It pretty much stayed like this until German @andiboecherer dropped a watt bomb on the final climb, flying first in to T2. : Round Three, the half marathon, it started off almost level pegging with Frodeno first on to the Anfi Beach run course, followed by Dapena, @giulio.molinari Kastelein, Boecherer, Heemeryk and Lange in close pursuit. : The fight to the death was on... and with temps going up to 29 degrees around the Anfi Beach run course, these heavyweights were putting on a show..... it wasn’t too long until Frodeno made a gap at the front leaving the bunch behind to fight it out, for 2nd and 3rd spot on the podium. Within the first 5km Lange put down the gas, it looked like the gap to Frodeno at the front was closing until Dapena and Kastelein, who were having their own personal scrap, moved into 2nd and 3rd spot, respectively, putting Lange into 4th. : It was Frodeno who finally went for the total knockout after ‘going the distance’ in just 3hr 41 mins and 21 seconds of this first European half tri in 2021, with Dapena and Kastelein taking 2nd and 3rd respectively a min or so behind.
