The way I'm completely desperate to know absolutely EVERYTHING about how, when, and why, Art got injured in 2018.
Was it during a big match? Or practice? Was he simply distracted? Or angry? Had he just had an argument with Tashi, so he was unfocused and emotional? Or was it just a freak accident? He's got several scars all over his shoulder and elbow, so it must have been quite significant. He must have thought his career was over right then and there.
Seeing Tashi's reaction to this would have been so gratifying as well, like. She was totally having war flashbacks. PTSD fully triggered. Did she cry? Did she scream? Was she trying her best to remain calm, but failing spectacularly? Art is her life's work, her second body. She lost tennis once and it destroyed her. She couldn't possibly lose Art too, she couldn't lose tennis again.
And where was Patrick? We know he's a certified yearner, so. Was he perhaps in the audience, watching the match? Or was he watching it live on TV? Did he only learn about it while scrolling the Art Donaldson hashtag on Twitter? Did he freak out? Did he try to visit them at the hospital? He wasn't there for Tashi when she got injured, which he regrets deeply. So he couldn't allow himself to NOT be there for Art, right? So what if he did try to visit, but access was restricted to friends and family. Patrick is neither of those things, not anymore. He couldn't be there, again.
But I just know that, as Art was lying on that hospital bed, disoriented, terrified and delirious from painkillers, the first thing he said to Tashi as she walked into the room was a mantra of "I'm sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry ".

What if you met Patrick Zweig on that crisp summer evening of 2011, crawling through the streets of Atlanta like a dead body, his stupid gray shirt wrinkled, curls messy and a pout on his adorable face. He has just fucked Tashi like his life is supposed to end tomorrow, like it's his last action on this Earth, and he's fucking miserable.
And you, a gorgeous, neat woman, very successful - a lawyer or a business woman - just about to leave the local bar after a night of celebration with you colleagues when he staggers in. It happens pretty quickly, and you're not even sure how exactly, but the younger guy's lips are soon on yours and he's desperately grasping onto your clothes as if you're gonna evaporate.
The way he fucks you that night is completely different to the way he fucked Tashi - tired, sloppy, almost childish - and you think he's crying too. You let him snuggle into the warmth of your chest, deciding to allow him to spend the night at your place. In the morning, he's surprised by waking up to the smell of bacon and eggs.
While munching onto the warm, proper breakfast and watching the outline of your body move smoothly under your silk robe, he tells you his name is Patrick, that he's 24 and a tennis player. A miserable one - you can see. He's sitting in your kitchen like a dirty mutt, almost begging to be taken care of. With his mouth full - he has no manners, you see - he calls you hot and sexy, failing to deliver a compliment that a woman like you would actually appreciate.
Later on, he lets you know that he really has nowhere to be, that if you want to, he can stay and make you feel even better than he did yesterday. And when you allow him to, quite aloof, you end up being the one making him feel good. It's comical, and Patrick feels like he's a goddamn toddler when you run him a bath and lend him some clothes after your ex-husband. Patrick stays at your place for a whole week.
The two of you exchange phone numbers, an action you assume is only symbolic, as Patrick has to travel to the other side of the States for a match, while you continue your meetings with clients and shine in the court room every so often. So it's obviously a surprise when your phone suddenly buzzes, a little Patrick - Aug 8th glowing on the screen. Apparently, he's currently in Nashville, offering to hop on an airplane and be at your place tomorrow morning. You don't refuse.
After his arrival, Patrick is still the same, giving you his signature and yet totally see-through smug attitude. He's dressed in that same fucking shirt, the slogan punching you like a laugh in your face. I TOLD YA.
The two of you fuck and fuck and fuck, Patrick spends the whole evening buried between your legs, his pink tongue gently swirling around your clit while you respond to some emails. Shortly after midnight, he falls asleep, nose buried between your slick folds. You wake him up with a handjob when the sun rises, listening to his sleepy whimpers and gentle curses, telling him that it's okay and he doesn't have to do anything, just enjoy it.
After that, and everything else, Patrick doesn't feel like leaving at all. The tender treatment he has been receiving from you is something unknown, something not even Art or Tashi could ever give him. He tells you about the two and cries a bit, and that exactly makes your heart swell.
So you propose an offer - a life-changing one - that he stays with you, that you will take care of him, treat him like he deserves to be treated and give him all the love he needs. All of that under one condition. He continues pursuing tennis.
Patrick agrees, obviously, he'd be a fool to walk away from you. And so within the next few weeks, he's completely moved to your place, has his own spot in your bed and on the sofa, has his toothbrush in the bathroom and gets to eat how much food he desires. The relationship between the two of you blossoms almost naturally, with you being a natural caregiver, and Patrick offering the satisfying element in response. It's a perfect coordination of two parties where nobody feel forced into something or neglected.
Glued to your side, Patrick eventually finds his spark again. Slowly but surely, Tashi and Art begin slipping into the very back of his mind - he never forgets, you don't force him to. You know the three of you can co-exist freely in his brain - and he's finally happy. Finally that Patrick Zweig that needed to be found again, and you are the person who helped him achieve all that.

correct me if I’m wrong but i feel like the reason so many women have latched onto challengers is because we’re so tiredddddd of the ‘innocent young woman chased after by dominant older whoreish man’ trope (aka every season of bridgerton and almost every Netflix romance). Tashi knows exactly what is happening, she is in full control of her sexual experiences and no one corrupts her or coerces her. I feel like a lot of writers still think femininity=submissiveness but Tashi is no less feminine for not being submissive and naive! It’s such a stupid way of writing and it’s so tired. I just love Tashi so much. She’s not the innocent naive girl trope I’m so sick of seeing. Writers, give us more women like Tashi 👏🏻

tashi went through so much as a young black woman in tennis and this is before she even went pro and to her her life ended after that injury which isn’t that wild of a thought when you renner how she spent most of her cognizant life playing tennis, being the best, stressing over matches, getting brand deals, being labeled a prodigy, being talked down to, the micro aggressions, blatant racism, strict diets, harsh training, staying on top of her classes, all this shit and in one instant they’re just gone? oh i’d crash out

The white t-shirt Tashi wore when she left the hotel to meet Patrick belongs to Art, not Patrick. They confirmed it in this interview. Just felt like clearing that up. 🫡

The Ultimate "Challengers" Timeline
Updated: October 20, 2024
I kept seeing some confusion in the fandom regarding the timeframe of certain events in the film, so I started working on this as a way to clarify theories and map out everything as accurately as possible. If you notice any mistakes, or know of a canon event that I missed, please don't hesitate to let me know!
Relationship-o-metric:
Art and Patrick were friends for approximately 6 years, 6 months and 16 days (2391 days).
Patrick and Tashi were in a relationship for exactly 5 months and 20 days (173 days).
Art and Tashi have been in a relationship for approximately 8 years, 11 months and 19 days (3275 days).
Some pointers and notes:
Art, Tashi and Patrick are all confirmed to be 31 years old in the final script of the film.
Lily is confirmed to be 5 years old in the final script of the film, so she would've been born sometime in 2014.
The American school year starts in mid/late August or early September, and ends in mid/late May or early June, depending on state. We do not know where the Mark Rebellato Tennis Academy is located.
The majority of boarding schools start their academic program in middle school (6th grade). Art and Patrick would've been 11 years old then. We can infer that they either: befriended each other on their first year at the academy, and later asked to be placed together as dorm mates for their second year, or that one (or both) of them started attending the academy a year later (7th grade), though I think that's unlikely.
Stanford follows the quarter system (not semesters). Most students start the academic year in late September (Autumn Quarter), and must complete 12 quarters to graduate.
Stanford also does not revoke athlete scholarships due to injuries. So it is highly likely that, since Tashi couldn't go pro, and she still had her scholarship, she stayed in college until she graduated.
Since Art was playing a Masters 1000 tournament in 2010 (which require a high player ranking), we can assume that he either: left Stanford to go pro at one point, or he was allowed leeway to skip classes and compete professionally.
The film ends on August 4, 2019. They had no idea what was about to happen in December 2019. In 2020, the vast majority of tennis events were cancelled due to the pandemic, so that's a potential topic to tackle in fic, I guess.

Notice how the I TOLD YA shirt is the only - apart from Stanford merch or official sports wear - piece of clothing in the whole Challengers, that has anything printed on it? It's the only piece that's so different to the designer stuff or expensive sports gear, so basic and giving you the impression that you could find something really similar in your local New Yorker.
It's kind of ironic that Patrick is the one to own it, as we know he's the richest of the three, at least in the beginning. I feel like it's meant to show us that he couldn't care less for his background or the way people percieve him. The way he doesn't even seem to wash it that often, we all know it probably stinks with the mess od his and Tashi's sweat.
And Tashi. Seeing her wear it looks almost odd, as if she shouldn't have it on, because she's such a graceful lady who should prioritize dresses and blouses and something pretty. But she does wear it: because it's Patrick's, because it reminds her of her boyfriend. And if she really doesn't like the way it looks, she still puts it on when Patrick is coming to visit her, because she knows it'll make him happy.
Such a simple piece of fabric with a silly slogan but I feel like there's a lot hidden behind it.

My two-faced blond king. Always plotting, always playing the long game. Loses battles, but wins the war. They were angrily swinging their rackets at each other, he was playing chess. Most likely to commit murder. Possessive. Wears a subtle satisfied smile when he gets his way. Power-trips. Comes across as the victim despite being the instigator. Scares teenagers. If he can't stop the narrative, he will at least control it. S-class emotional manipulator. If he can't have it, then he'll destroy it. Can't keep his hands to himself. Bites.
My pretty malicious babe. They could never make me hate you.

Tashi is the eldest child of her family. We know for a fact that she has two younger brothers; we see them with her parents at the Adidas party. We also know her family was very supportive of her, and that Tashi is described by Zendaya as family-oriented.
But what about Art and Patrick's families? Here's what I think.
Patrick 100% has siblings! My take is that the only reason his parents didn’t care about him throwing his life away and being a disappointment, is because they already had another child perfectly trained and poised to take over the family business and carry on the Zweig name proudly. A boy, the eldest. And just in case the eldest failed, a backup, another boy, or a girl. The heir, the spare, and Patrick.
He was un unruly child, I'm sure, so they just sent him away to boarding school to be raised by someone else. More trouble than he was worth. His rejection issues (possibly) come from his parents always preferring his siblings over him. Abandoned and overlooked. The wound reopened, ugly and festering, when Art and Tashi married each other instead of him.
If Patrick were an only child, there is absolutely no way his parents would have allowed him to just fuck off into the sunset to play tennis. In my opinion, Patrick gives middle child energy, though he could be the youngest as well. That being said, he's obviously not close to his family at all. Given his current lifestyle, it's evident that at one point his parents either, cut him off, or he stopped accepting their financial support.
It's worth noting that, while Tashi's family was present at her match for the 2006 US Open (and quite supportive, complete with signs and video cameras), the families of Patrick and Art were nowhere in sight. Which brings us to:
Art. He's a tricky one cause, in my opinion, not only does he give strong "Only Child Syndrome" energy, but also "divorced parents" energy. His grandma clearly adored him and doted on him, but his parents were very much absent from his life. And no, I don't think they're dead. On top of Art's boarding school expenses, we know his grandma was in a nursing home, which are also very, very expensive. So who was paying for all of this? An uncle? Possibly, but I don't think so.
It seems to me that his parents divorced, but neither of the two wanted to deal with the living, breathing reminder of their failed marriage, so they shipped him off to boarding school. I suppose it's possible that he could have step-siblings from either of his parents remarrying, but they probably didn't want him anywhere near their new families. Lonely and unwanted. Aside from his codependency issues, this could be an extra motive to his complete aversion to separating from Tashi, despite his clear misery. He doesn't want history to repeat itself with Lily. Divorce brought nothing but pain for him, after all.
I've encountered people depicting Art's family as middle-class, but that's incorrect. WASPs usually come from old money, and we can tell that this is the case with Art. The sheer size of the rock on Tashi's finger, which belonged to his grandma, speaks for itself. The writer has also explicitly said both guys came from money, but were essentially abandoned by their families.
Before Tashi, they really had no one to rely on but each other. Which makes their fall out all the more tragic.

On top of the initial fallout, they’re both angry with Patrick because of Atlanta.
Art, cause he saw them. He knows, but has decided to sit on this information for the time being. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike and shift an argument in his favor. A man committed to playing chess.
Tashi, cause she is ashamed and guilty. It makes her feel weak and stupid that she caved in such a moment of vulnerability. She hates feeling vulnerable, and seeing Patrick again is a reminder of her fleeting weakness.
I’d even go as far as to say Tashi felt so guilty about Atlanta, even years down the line, that she decided to give Art a baby. I cannot be convinced Lily wasn’t a fix-it baby. A wholly planned and scheduled, down to the baby’s zodiac sign, nine-month-long penance. A quiet apology. This was Art, once again, winning the points that matter by staying silent.
funny to think about tashi’s scene with patrick behind the hotel or art’s scene with him in the sauna because they are both so mad at him even tho it doesn’t make any sense like they’re the ones that shut him out over an injury that couldve happened under any circumstances art stole his girlfriend and tashi married his best friend and they’re angry with him and it’s literally because they want to fuck him so bad that it makes them furious
