Ok I think I mentioned somewhere once before that Family Units in MVRCK world are kind of a big deal nowadays. with lowwww population numbers and clones everywhere it became really important to people to keep track of lineages. So. Lots of double or hyphenated last names. They can get pretty long depending on how you choose to do it. This serves to heavily isolate clones or those estranged from their families bc it becomes really obvious if someone has only one last name

a clone would only be able to claim their Templates last name unless they get adopted into a family. Now, adoption isnt less uncommon than irl, but, because of this whole focus of lineage tracking, 'giving away' a last name is much rarer. your integration into a family has to be maaaad serious for you to gain their name. Doesn't mean you're not loved if you're adopted and you don't inherit a name just....youre not related to those people..... But plenty of clones can inherit double names from their template, assuming their template had two surnames to give....buuuut some don't

Losing or dropping a last name is seen as a big deal, socially. For instance, Reo is born as Reo Moreno-Singh. But he ends up developing some beef with his Moreno parent and drops her name to become just Reo Singh. this is significant for estrangement reasons but also !! Chandani Singh was a clone !!! He dropped an established surname in favor of a CLONES NAME. quite the statement there sir.

Clones names tend to be the first to go when deciding how to hyphenate names when marrying. They're unestablished. Even though the clone could have a hyphenated name inherited from their template, they're not actually connected to a family anymore. they're singular. "Pruning" those dead-ends out of the tree is uh. seen as proper.

Example: the facestealer's template, Jace, is actually the son of a clone. His full name is Jace Jahner-Morley, where Morley is the clone name. He married Elizabeth Hale-Ryans. If they had a normal kid, they would likely inherit a name WITHOUT Morley in it . Like Jahner-Hale. Or the full Jahner Hale-Ryans or something. it's up to personal preference or familial history how you do the specifics there. But anyway, no clone name in sight. Now, Jace cloned himself to have a child. He's clearly more clone-positive than most. So the facestealer's last name is actually Morley-Ryans ...Or Morley-Hale, I've been going back and forth sorry. but importantly, he keeps the Morley name. This could be #inspiring to some people but funnily enough the facestealer fucking hates it. because he's a clone. He thinks it sucks that he's the clone of a son of a clone. He doesn't want that other fuckers name. godamnnit.

But this is another reason why the Maverick clones are kinda striking. Template Maverick was from a time where double surnames were much less common. Her being just Dr. Maverick was totally fine. but her gazillion clones only inherit her one name, so they're all obviously Without Family. (Delphine) Maverick in particular has it rough bc even though he's cloned from Elaine, who is married to Mizrieta, and raised as their child directly, he still only has one surname. Mizrieta forfeit her entire birth name(s) bc she hates the stupid bastard she was cloned from. So he remains Delphine Maverick. And then even goes so far as to not use his first name. So he's Just Maverick....Just Maverick....It's dire.
