Narumitsu fic recs: Miles & Maya are besties edition

Order and chaos, Miles and Maya. Miles seems to naturally attract and is fascinated by chaos, maybe because this gives him permission to be a little less than perfect. Maya, Phoenix, Kay and even Larry, are the gold in the kintsugi of his life. On the other hand, Maya's life has been incredibly chaotic, so I think she takes comfort in the supposed isle of calm and thoughtful structure and discipline that is Miles. Whether bonding over shared love of the Steel Samurai, their traumatized childhoods, or their love of Phoenix and found family, the following are the fics that gave me the feels for these two as friends.

Thanks so much for the tag @songofamazon! This is going to be tricksy, because in addition to the rules below I am going to challenge myself not to use any of the ones I did when I played this game last.

Rules: you will be given a word. Then you share one sentence/excerpt from your wip(s) that starts with each letter of your word.

The word I have is FADE. So, taken from different WIPs/chapters of WIPs and devoid of context…

Forcing himself to stay observant, alert, quiet, and unobtrusive for hours at a time every day and night was grueling in a way that could only be called boring on a good day.

Vessel's POV.

His black short sleeved sweater slid off the hanger. It was soft, cashmere and cable knit. Vessel was in front of the mirror, making sure that the ends of his sweater were properly tucked into his dress pants. He messed with his shorter hair, which he’d been able to get cut earlier today. He had left the top longer and messy, almost enough to run his fingers through. It was a good length, not long enough to drive him nuts but long enough to style a bit if he really wanted to. He’d gotten the sides trimmed and shaved down as well, making it easier to manage. He fussed for a moment longer and then decided that he was as cleaned up as he could be. Vessel inhaled and smelled iron. Another damn nosebleed. Every time he got too stressed out or too excited, he had a small one. Just enough to ruin a white shirt. Of course he’d have one today. His phone buzzed on the counter, and he went to get it. He grabbed a tissue and held it to his nose, grabbed his phone and opened the message. It was II. 

Still on? Was all it said. 

Yes, of course. Vessel replied immediately. Shit, does he want out of it? Unless you have something else going on. 

Nothing else. See you soon :) II’s reply came in so quick, Vessel wasn’t sure how he read the message that fast. Vessel finished cleaning his nose up and got ready to walk over to the shop. II had picked it out, and luckily it was within walking distance for Vessel. For a guy who doesn’t like coffee, II had a shop in mind right away when Vessel had asked. It was one of the best in the area, but wasn’t anywhere near the gym. Is II a neighbor? Vessel wondered. He walked out of his place, found that it was in fact drizzling and sprinted down to the coffee shop. He was about 20 minutes ahead of their selected time, but he hoped to get the good table and chairs because of it. They were right by the big front window, and had giant comfy chairs instead of little wooden ones. And both were open, so Vessel sank into the one facing the door. He began to scroll aimlessly on his phone. One of III’s videos flew by, showing Vessel his own physique staged next to III’s. A bit ago, III had decided that together they could be some form of social media famous and he had been diligent about posting their bodies all over the internet. He kept Vessel’s face out of it, but he knew his own body. Vessel’s lat spread was the thumbnail, and he sent III a DM about it, saying that it looked great. III sent back a message, telling Vessel that it’s okay to put out on the first date, with about eleven winking emojis. 

Fifteen minutes slipped by. A distant rumbling grew loud, drawing Vessel’s attention onto the street. A motorcycle pulled up right in front of the coffee shop. It was black, with purple trim. The driver had a full black helmet on, all black gear and looked slick, cool and way beyond anything Vessel could comprehend. He could see the way the road gear worked, how it was new and clean and obviously well maintained. Vessel was about to return to scrolling on his phone when the driver took his helmet off. It was II. 

Vessel smelled iron.
