what it's like inside my mind - Chapter 19 : My Personal Letter titled ‘Dear Alcohol’

Our first kiss was when I turned 20, on the 20th of September, Ironically in the Year 2020

As you, so dedicated slide your way within that glass crystal cup 

After a long ass debate with myself about my hypocrisy & never wanting to have the taste of you, ever in my lifetime

I figured, If I were to ever kickstart  my journey, I might as well start it good. 

Feeling a lil boujee with my suit & tie, sitting at my favourite cafe, at the bar while asking if they served some fine ass  wine

I never really thought I’d develop such a relationship with you. 

Who knew that the cliche of having your heartbroken would kickstart a snowball of continuous firsts.

After the ages of high school & popular kids, 

I was told I was never invited to any parties because I always needed a plus one, 

Eventually that never really became an issue,

Being the heaviest-weight in the room sparked debates about whether my Filipino lineage had something to do with my monstrous feats of strengths

From house parties where the nights would never really end, 

To clubs where I’m dancing my way to the find the finest little thing, 

To bars where conversations were ethical yet so vulnerable

Being the last one standing in the room filled with vomit stained shirts, slurred texts & drunk breaths,

I was reminded why I never really wanted to be with you in the first place.

Growing up, I loathed you.

I hated the sight of you. The smell of you. The catastrophe of you. The chaos of you.

That’s kinda funny with the amount of empty glasses perched up at the sight of my alcoholic mother. 

Having to clean up, drag her to bed, & tuck her in to sleep

Just for a yelling in the morning just so she could find her peace. 

Ironically enough my sister never really wanted to work in the wine business,

But you see not finishing college never really gave her a choice, 

Soon enough - 2 kids & a brother-in-law later I figured while babysitting her sons that her running a wine dispensary wouldn’t really end that cycle

I used to sit up, nights on end wondering what a waste of money, time, energy

Little did I know it was for the times - where at the least they would find their sanity. 

So with glass in hand, 

Scribbling on this piece of paper that’s scrunched up within the back pocket of one of my jeans, 

Only found when you decide to leave, 

I hope that we develop a good one - especially when your grip is already on every single facet of my life

Celebratory clinking of glasses for the ones that are still here & the ones that are lost,

To the nights where you run dry & the emotions run high, 

To the moments where I’d tell myself that one more glass just means another 5am exit, 

To the days where waking up with you in bed with a heavy head tells me I’ve gotta stop,

& to the days where I’d try to understand my mother to the best of my abilities. 

So cheers,

Because I promise you I am no longer debating with my younger self about whether my hypocrisy & your kiss will ever be the death of me

Because I am now understanding that now you’re just a part of me
