Hello everyone and hope you’re doing well. Here we are, another Monday and another book haul. This particular haul is a bit of a love letter to @charcopress my new favourite publisher. I bought two copies of all four of these books - one set for me 😂 and one set for bestie @keeperofpages for Christmas. The Wind That Lays Waste is written by the same author of Brickmakers, one of my favourite reads of 2022. I had to try something else by her! This is her debut and described as a “taut, lyrical portrait of four people thrown together on a single day in rural Argentina…its limpid and confident prose, is profound and poetic, a tactile experience of the mountain, the sun, the squat trees, the broken cars, the sweat-stained shirts and the destroyed lives.” The bottom three, all by Ariana Harwicz are part of a loose trilogy. Die My Love follows a woman in a forgotten patch of French countryside. “A woman is battling her demons embracing seclusion yet wanting to belong, craving freedom whilst feeling trapped, yearning for family life but at the same time wanting to burn the entire house down.” In Feebleminded, “Harwicz drags us to the border between fascination and discomfort as she explores aspects of desire, need and dependency through the dynamics between a mother and her daughter.” Finally in Tender, the third in the author’s “involuntary trilogy,” she builds “an interior world so robust, and so grotesque, that it eclipses our shared reality. Savage and savagely funny, she leaves us singed, if not scorched.” Are you a fan of translated fiction like I am? What would you recommend? Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #ohlookmorebooks #booksbringhappiness #selvaalmada #thewindthatlayswaste #charcopress #translatedfictionbywomenauthors #arianaharwicz #diemylove #feebleminded #tender #favouritepublisher #booksformeandforyou #buddyreadswithjanel #readingtranslatedliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/CpdWgK1r5OH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Of Cattle and Men by Ana Paula Maia
Of Cattle and Men by Ana Paula Maia and translated from the Portuguese by Zoë Perry @ZAPTranslations Short review on this swift and eerie short novel centred around a slaughterhouse and its workers in Brazil. Out by @CharcoPress #Brazil #books
Maybe it’s just the simple fact that I’ve grown up with farm animals that this book felt so eerily familiar. Photo by: NOLITETHOUGHTS Of Cattle and Men was written by Ana Paula Maia and translated from the Portuguese by Zoë Perry Of Cattle and Men is situated in Milo’s slaughterhouse in Brazil. There are burger plants and several other slaughterhouses around the area and a river which feeds on…

I received this short story collection by Leanne Radojkovich as a Christmas present from a dear friend.
What made me even happier is that it's published from @theemmapress. I've been wanting to purchase a book from them for so long. I was not disappointed. Feminist Stories of magical realism and gothic horror. The illustrations by Rachel J. Fenton fit perfectly the atmosphere of the book and the smell was enchanting ✨ Seriously, I couldn't stop smelling it. I can't remember the last time a book smelled that good.
🪄Q: Can you recommend me a few small and independent publishers that you love and one book (any genre) that I should absolutely read from them?
Some of my favourite independent publishers are @saqibooks for El Saadawi's books.
@bloodaxebooks for great poetry by women. ( Jen Campbell, Tishani Doshi, Claire Askew)
@charcopress for women authors like Claudia Pineiro, Ariana Harwisz, Selva Almada.
@pennedinthemargins for innovative and contemporary poets like Abi Palme, Rebecca Tamás, Melissa Lee-Houghton.
@astrahousebooks for publishing carefully chosen fiction and nonfiction from all around the world.

Are you stuck in a reading rut? Why not try one of the shortlisted books for the Booker International Prize? . Spanning 5 original languages and 6 countries, it's a very strong selection this year, and with #indiepublishing dominant with 5 of the titles, including shop faves @fitzcarraldoeditions @faberbooks and @charcopress. . If there are links between the novels they lie in re-workings of national histories and myths and in explorations of traumas. But highly individual, the range of topics is as broad as the geography. The Enlightenment of the Greengage Tree is narrated by a ghost in post-revolutionary Iran; The Adventures of China Iron tells the story of two women looking for freedom on the pampas of late 19-century Argentina; Tyll describes the picaresque adventures of a slightly sinister prankster during Europe’s Thirty Years War; Hurricane Season describes hardscrabble and sometimes violent lives in rural Mexico; The Memory Police is a disturbing dystopian tale about the necessity and fragility of remembering; while The Discomfort of Evening centres on the dark fantasies of a 10-year-old girl. . Tap through the links in the pics to read more about each of the books, and to order a copy for you or as a gift. . #newbooks #fictionfriday #internationalbooker2020 #translatedfiction #fictionintranslation #bookstore #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #bookshops #Sheffield #labiblioteka

Hello everyone and hope your week is going well. I’ve just arrived in Inverness after a very cool road trip from Aberdeen so here’s a post I prepared earlier - the #coffeebookchallenge which I saw on @katereadbooks page! Espresso - a book that was hard to get through Betty by Tiffany McDaniel. This is a heartbreaking and horribly sad book with multiple trigger warnings. However it’s also one of my all time favourites 😍 Mocha - an emotional read Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell This won the @womensprize a few years ago and I’ve never cheered so loudly for a book that has won before. Adored this story!! 😍 Latte - a sweet read The House In The Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune Another one of those books I recommend to everyone I meet. I fell in love with every single one of the characters - a real feel-good novel 🥰 Cappuccino - a book that everyone has read but me 🙈 Am I the last person in the world to read The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman? Macchiato - favourite book of the year Brickmakers by Selva Almada I have quite a few books of the year so far, it’s been a great reading year but this is the one that’s jumping out at the moment. Translated by Annie McDermott and available from my new favourite publisher @charcopress this small but mighty novel packs an almighty punch! I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookstackchallenge #betty #tiffanymcdaniel #hamnet #maggieofarrell #womensprizewinners #thehouseintheceruleansea #tjklune #thethursdaymurderclub #richardosman #brickmakers #selvaalmada #anniemcdermott #booksintranslation #charcopress #favouritebooksofalltime #favouritebook2022 https://www.instagram.com/p/ClUDAbyLipP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s not that often where a book sneaks up on you and unexpectedly leaves you enthralled, staggered and completely bowled over. Step forward Brickmakers. I’ve been trying to read as diversely and widely as possible and have recently acquired a great little pile of translated fiction (this particular novel translated by Annie McDermott). Brickmakers was the first book I read from @charcopress I read it with the gorgeous @keeperofpages and now, quite frankly, I’m obsessed.⁣ ⁣ This short but impactful novel by Argentine writer Selva Almada starts in an amusement park where two young men are dying after having faced off in a knife fight. Both men, Pájaro and Marciano are visited by the spirits of their fathers, both brickmakers who have had a long-standing feud. Through the young men’s visions, we also re-visit the pivotal events that led them to this point in their lives. ⁣ ⁣ When I finished this book to be honest, I was kind of speechless. The power, the intensity and the heightened emotions really shone through the narrative and I was gripped immediately, desperate to keep turning the pages. This is the sort of novel that has a lasting effect and if it sounds intriguing to you, please don’t seek out detailed reviews, the beauty of Brickmakers is knowing very little before you dive in. ⁣ ⁣ This is an incredible, jaw dropping piece of fiction that only proves why I should keep picking books up on a whim, knowing very little about them. Thank you to my gut instinct for picking one of my favourite books of this year!⁣ ⁣ Five perfect stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagram #bookreview #brickmakers #selvaalmada #argentinefiction #anniemcdermott #charcopress #booksintranslation #readmoretranslatedbooks #readmoretranslations #bookoftheyear2022 #unforgettablereads #latinamericanfiction #booksiwanttoreadagain #favouritebooks2022 https://www.instagram.com/p/CkboCySrWBG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
