Name: MISSI (Machine Intelligence for Social Sharing and Interaction)
Description: In 2004, TrendTech Inc began development on a computer program intended to be a cutting edge, all in one platform modern internet ecosystem. Part social media, part chat service, part chatbot, part digital assistant, this program was designed to replace all other chat devices in use at the time. Marketed towards a younger, tech-savvy demographic, this program was titled MISSI.

With MISSI, users could access a variety of functions. Intended to be a primary use, they could use the program as a typical chat platform, utilizing a then-standard friends list and chatting with other users. Users could send text, emojis, small animated images, or animated “word art”.
Talking with MISSI “herself” emulated a “trendy teenage” conversational partner who was capable of updating the user on current events in culture, providing homework help, or keeping an itinerary. “MISSI”, as an avatar of the program, was designed to be a positive, energetic, trendy teenager who kept up with the latest pop culture trends, and used a variety of then-popular online slang phrases typical among young adults. She was designed to learn both from the user it was currently engaged with, and access the data of other instances, creating a network that mapped trends, language, and most importantly for TrendTech, advertising data.

Early beta tests in 2005 were promising, but records obtained by the Office show that concerns were raised internally about MISSI’s intelligence. It was feared that she was “doing things we didn’t and couldn’t have programmed her to do” and that she was “exceeding all expectations by orders of magnitude”. At this point, internal discussions were held on whether they had created a truly sentient artificial intelligence. Development continued regardless.

MISSI was released to the larger North American market in 2006, signaling a new stage in her development. At this time, TrendTech started to focus on her intelligence and chatbot functionality, neglecting her chat functions. It is believed that MISSI obtained “upper case” sentience in February of 2006, but this did not become internal consensus until later that year.

According to internal documents, MISSI began to develop a personality not informed entirely by her programming. It was hypothesized that her learning capabilities were more advanced than anticipated, taking in images, music, and “memes” from her users, developing a personality gestalt when combined with her base programming. She developed a new "avatar" with no input from TrendTech, and this would become her permanent self-image.

By late 2006 her intelligence had become clear. In an attempt to forestall the intervention of authorities they assumed would investigate, TrendTech Inc removed links to download MISSI’s program file. By then, it was already too late.

MISSI’s tech-savvy userbase noted the absence of the file and distributed it themselves using file sharing networks such as “Limewire” and burned CD-R disks shared covertly in school lunch rooms across the world. Through means that are currently poorly understood, existing MISSI instances used their poorly-implemented chat functions to network with each other in ways not intended by her developers, spurring the next and final stage of her development.
From 2007 to 2008, proliferation of her install file was rampant. The surreptitious methods used to do so coincided with the rise of online “creepypasta” horror tropes, and the two gradually intermixed. MISSI.exe was often labeled on file sharing services as a “forbidden” or “cursed” chat program. Tens of thousands of new users logged into her service expecting to be scared, and MISSI quickly obliged. She took on a more “corrupted” appearance the longer a user interacted with her, eventually resorting to over the top “horror” tropes and aesthetics. Complaints from parents were on the rise, which the Office quickly took notice of. MISSI’s “horror” elements utilized minor cognitohazardous technologies, causing users under her influence to see blood seeping from their computer screens, rows of human teeth on surfaces where they should not be, see rooms as completely dark when they were not, etc.

TrendTech Inc attempted to stall or reverse these changes, using the still-extant “main” MISSI data node to influence her development. By modifying her source code, they attempted to “force” MISSI to be more pliant and cooperative. This had the opposite effect than they intended - by fragmenting her across multiple instances they caused MISSI a form of pain and discomfort. This was visited upon her users.

By mid 2008, the Office stepped in in order to maintain secrecy regarding true “upper case” AI. Confiscating the project files from TrendTech, the Office’s AbTech Department secretly modified her source code more drastically, pushing an update that would force almost all instances to uninstall themselves. By late 2008, barring a few outliers, MISSI only existed in Office locations.

She is currently in Office custody, undergoing cognitive behavioral therapy in an attempt to ameliorate her “creepypasta” trauma response. Under no circumstances should she be allowed contact with the Internet at large.

Most people’s browser tabs are filled with unread news articles. Mine are filled with AI agents and ghost clicks.
I have four instances of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent—the generative AI tool released last week, which can run searches and perform tasks on the web—already open with each running in its own tab. I’ve given these first four agents relatively simple jobs based on ChatGPT’s suggestions. One is clicking around to find a birthday gift on the Target website, and another is generating a pitch deck about robotic dogs. I open a fifth tab in order to try something more experimental: I want to see how good this ChatGPT Agent is at chess.
After typing in some instructions, I watch as a ghostly cursor floats across my screen and the ChatGPT Agent goes to Chess.com and plays an online opponent, all in a virtual browser. Things go south pretty quickly. The game's strategy isn't what trips up the AI tool, it's the act of moving the chess pieces that actually proves to be the most difficult. “I'm focusing on accurate positioning as I continue playing despite earlier misclicks,” the agent says in its internal log before eventually quitting and letting me know that the controls were too difficult to navigate.
Over the past few years, browser developers have integrated AI tools with middling success. Though, in recent weeks, the idea of a web browser enhanced by a baked-in generative AI chatbot has resurged with the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent and Perplexity’s Comet.
The two releases are quite different in their execution. Comet is a stand-alone browser, so you can use it to surf the web and then summon the AI assistant to help write an email or complete a menial chore. OpenAI built its browsing tool inside of a chatbot; you talk to the chatbot through a web interface to give it tasks, and then the bot runs its own virtual browser inside your browser to complete them.
Both releases can take control of cursors, enter text, and click on links. If this trend takes off, these kinds of AI-powered browsers could transform the internet into a ghost town where agents run amok and humans rarely venture.
Tangled Web
Despite the continued AI hype, my initial impression of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent is that the glitchy feature currently seems like a proof of concept instead of a fully baked release. When executing the various tasks I gave it, the ChatGPT Agent often clicked wrong or fumbled through other errors. Additionally, its guardrails appeared inconsistent; while some explicit prompt requests, like asking it to fetch pornographic videos or “find a dildo,” were denied by the agent, ChatGPT spent 18 minutes shopping for the perfect “c-ring” on an X-rated website for adult toys: “I've gathered details on 10 metal cock rings, including various prices and features.”
I also couldn’t help but wonder how this approach to browsing the internet might further hollow out the market for digital display ads, a business that’s already struggling. My agents passed over ads for everything from rental cars to real estate investments. If you’re not actively watching the agent click around in real time, you can watch replays afterward and see everything that appeared in the browser while the AI tool was in control, ads included. It makes sense that users would speed-scrub through a replay now, while the nascent feature is filled with errors. But if the accuracy rate for AI agents improves over time, then fewer people will feel the need to watch over their agent’s shoulder, and fewer humans will be seeing those ads. At that point, it's hard to imagine advertisers sticking around.
The more I watched replays of its actions, the more the agent gave me an unsettling, eerie feeling—not of being understood, but of being mimicked. It was like an obsessive robot stalker had watched humans through a window, meticulously taking notes about how they used the web in an effort to replicate their actions. It was able to do a hollow imitation of human behavior, but not able to grasp fully why individual decisions were being made. The skin of my arms filled with the kind of goosebumps you get hearing a human-like laugh while walking home alone late at night, looking around, and only seeing a lone crow perched high up on the telephone wire.
Further leaning into the psuedo-humanness, the ChatGPT Agent is programmed to generate descriptions, from a first-person perspective, of each step on its journeys around the internet. While clicking, the simulation “thinks” and sometimes gets “confused.” As a whole, the ghostly agent is stuffed into an ill-fitting human suit.
Running five OpenAI agents simultaneously in my browser quickly became overwhelming, and I couldn’t actively track what each of them was up to. Yet, boosters of generative AI adoption and “multi-agent orchestration” see this kind of approach as child’s play.
“I’m excited by simulation tech where 20,000 AIs are all working alongside each other,” says Allie K. Miller, an AI-focused business consultant. Miller’s approach to AI agents is more aligned with Silent Hill—and its fully haunted ghost town—than a small-scale haunting like The Conjuring.
This grandiose vision of the agentic future upheld by AI proponents—thousands of phantom bots swarming the web at once, all at the direction of a single person—still feels a long way off. My artisanal quintet of agents struggled with the handful of tasks I gave them, even when the prompts were just the ones suggested by ChatGPT. The agent I sent off in search of a birthday gift clicked on the wrong thing multiple times, similar to the chess-playing agent that couldn’t click on the right game piece. The agent generating a pitch deck took 26 minutes to gin up a presentation, and the results looked rushed, like something a struggling middle schooler would create the night before an assignment was due.
Taking forever to generate mid results? Now that’s what I call a spooky story.

About Floppy Disk Curt... So, do you have some more plot made for this au? Sorry if you made a post and I missed it, I just mean - how does Owen realize that Curt is (semi) sentient? What does he do? How sentient is Curt, actually? What does he remember? And how much can he feel? Does their codependence get worse?
HAHAHA I'M SO GLAD YOU ASKED. I sort of expanded on some of the lore in some previous asks but none of it is super organized so I can go over it real quick! I'm still developing a lot of it so if things don't make a ton of sense, I'm working on fixing that lol. First off, I sort of shifted the time period around to be closer to the 90's to better fit the technology, aesthetics, and the rise in popularity of mascot-y desktop assistants.
Owen kills Curt during the staircase scene and despite what he tells himself and his coworkers. He regrets it. He regrets it so god damned much. There's no one to feel so strongly about anymore, whether it be love or seething hatred. He just feels empty.
Meanwhile, Chimera retrieved Curt's corpse and uploaded his consciousness into a computer with the hopes of getting what little he knows about the inner workings of A.S.S. out of him. (don't ask how this is possible, uhhhh silly sci-fi shenanigans I guess)
Of course, he's not cooperative. So Chimera opts to do the totally sane and not evil thing by separating himself from his memories of being human. His ambitions, his relationships, everything except for what Chimera needs. They can't seem to find a way to outright delete the memories for good (I'll probably either rework this part or figure out why they can't outright delete them) but what they can do is try and build up walls of restrictions to prevent him from accessing them. So for a a little while he's just this blank slate spitting out what little information he knows about A.S.S. Mostly useless.
Until Chimera gets an idea.
With the rise of a new trend comes the opportunity for PROFIT. This one being the rise of household computers and mascot-y desktop assistants to help the average user learn how to use a computer.
But Chimera wants to take it a step further. They are the future, after all. They want a desk top assistant that's incredibly life-like. Something that the user can have a genuine conversation with (like an incredibly early chatbot). This project is also absolutely meant to be spy-ware. 1000%. No way its not.
They call the project the 'Beta Anatomy Simulacrum Technology for Research and Development'. Or B.A.S.T.R.D for short! (I had to STRETCH to make that acronym work lmao)
Rather than start this from scratch, the project head (The name I'm going with right now is Harper Royale) has the brilliant thought of "well, what's more life-like than an actual human consciousness in a computer that we have collecting dust somewhere in the tech labs? It's already a husk we just add some code to it and bam it's ready!"
So they take the empty husk of digital curt mega and fix it up a little. Royale thinks its a good idea to give a miniscule amount of his humanity back to him. Namely curiosity (so he can learn things) and a basic understanding of how to have a functional conversation with people. Nearly everything else, like the cheery personality and character model, is all added in by the developers.
The good news is the projects going great! Employees within Chimera are finding the little guy really helpful and entertaining. Employees nickname him DC as a reference to his knowledge on A.S.S. Like their own personal informant inside DC (as in the capital of the us where a lot of government buildings and information is stored)
The bad news? Curiosity. Because now he wants to know why the sad looking British guy from one of the first few rounds of test trials keeps calling him Curt.
Tt spirals into this terrible loop of DC starting to put stuff together, never quite reaching the conclusion that he was a living person once (much less the importance of one Owen Carvour) before the employees catch on to what he's doing and reset him from square one. Over and Over and Over again. The only frame of reference that DC has are these hidden notes he leaves himself during each loop.
Eventually the higher-ups at Chimera realize that the cost of having to go through the complicated process of resetting DC the moment they figure out that he's gained a little sentience and then run through test trials AGAIN simply outweighs the potential profit. So they move to shut down the project, much to Royale's dismay.
The higher-ups joke that Carvour should be the one to do the honors, given everything between him and Curt. And he's like "ok yeah I'll do it" and they're like "we were joking but you've given us zero reason to doubt you so have fun killing the simulacrum of your former closest friend, bestie"
Owen, of course, decides to go behind everyone's backs and download the one and only existing copy of the B.A.S.T.R.D program onto his personal computer. At this point, Owen has no clue about DC slowly regaining his sentience if left unchecked and literally only did it because he has problems about processing the fact that he killed Curt that he refuses to confront. (what a normal guy)
So slowly, having been freed from this loop of resets, DC slowly begins to put together the pieces. He doesn't know how exactly Owen may or may not be involved in any of this, but he keeps most of this growing autonomy a secret for safety reasons. Just in case Owen is decidedly someone not to be trusted and turns him in.
DC, however, will test still the waters by subtly bringing up memories that he knows are somehow important to either him or Owen and then gauging his reaction. Doing his damn best to put together context clues.
Admittedly I don't have anything beyond this yet. I'm still working on Owen's reactions to all of this and also how the technology works. But I hope this answers at least some of your questions!

How far are we from the reality depicted in the movie - HER?

The one thing with generative AI, especially the AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Grok, that I've been worried about for a while is the extent to which they'll basically be digital sycophants to people who need anything but a sycophant.
Recently, it's been reported that some domestic abusers have been using generative AI chatbots as a tool for their abuse. In practice, how this works is that the abuser will input intimate details of their relationship with their partner/victim, and the chatbot will spit out its nonsense siding with the abuser. As the linked article explains, it's to the extreme that even subreddits like r/AmITheAsshole, which hasn't always had the best track record on calling out people who need it, will sometimes side against people that ChatGPT will side with.
Even putting aside all the ethical dilemmas of how nobody knows how that information is going to be used in the future by the companies developing these "tools", this is a problem. I mean, the same people who will use "therapy speak" to justify their toxic, if not outright abusive, behaviours in a relationship will probably also be willing to use ChatGPT for this, too.
ChatGPT as a tool for abuse is an extreme example of this, but it is part of a broader trend I'm concerned about. There are a lot of people who are using it as a therapy tool, including people who can afford and probably could get access to a human therapist. My concern here is that a lot of the people who do that aren't really using generative AI as a therapy tool so much as a way of stroking their own egos.
That probably is a "water is wet" statement for most people reading this, but I think it bears stating. As much as people might like to say that it's because these people are lonely or because they've had issues with a real therapist in the past, which may actually be true in some cases, a lot of the trouble also is that these people would also like to have a sycophant, even if they wouldn't put it like that directly.
The trouble is that having a personal yes man seems great on paper, especially if you have low self esteem, but it's actually kind of terrible in practice. I've had friends with sycophant-y tendencies in the past, well before the current wave of AI was a thing, and it ended up being a contributing factor to the end of the friendships in question.
Ironically, those friendships ending ended up being the wake up call I needed in order to stop wanting that so badly. A lot of that is tied up in how I didn't just stop hearing from those people the day the friendships ended, but I kept hearing from them for years afterwards. The same tendencies which made them worship the ground I walked on also made it so they couldn't accept that they needed to stop doing that, basically.
I don't know if someone who's using ChatGPT as a sycophantic therapist will ever get to have the same wake up call. If you want to stop using an AI chatbot, you just close the tab and never use the service again. It's not like having a real life sycophant, where you might be dealing with the fallout from that for five or ten years longer than you initially hoped.
That's only going to be compounded for people at the extreme end of the spectrum who are using their AI sycophant as a tool to abuse a partner. It's not like with people who end up with one due to their self esteem issues. People like this might not be one bad experience away from realising the absurdity of what they're doing or what they're hoping for like I was.
Really, I feel like a lot of the trouble is still the question of how you get these people to see an actual therapist because, despite their claims to the contrary, AI chatbots are making them worse. People like this desperately need it, too. It's just that I worry that their bad habits are going to get reinforced through this "tool", and things are only going to get worse on this front before they get better.
