Okay! Obviously, I love Wolf 359. The available scripts for Wolf 359 are recording scripts, meaning they're inaccurate in a ton of places when it comes to finalized or improvised dialogue, and don't function well as transcripts (especially since the scripts for the live show and some of the mini episodes were never made available.) That said, I think everyone should read the scripts; the sheer amount of physical description that you can feel in the show, even if you can't see it... I guarantee it will enhance your listening experience. Most visual show to ever be an audio drama. So, in pursuit of both of these goals at once, I went over every word in the scripts, and wrote up new scripts for the unavailable ones. Some of the sound effects described - especially in early episodes - might not line up exactly, because I didn't want to mess with the non-dialogue portion of the show, but I hope this strikes a good balance and can be a useful resource.

In episode 339 of Game Mess Decides, Jeff Grubb had the following to say on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's possible/rumored release window [transcript]:

Question from chat: “Hi Jeff and Mike, when will Dragon Age 4 be shown and released?” Jeff: “Yeah, I mean, I expect it will probably pop up this summer. I don’t know when it’ll be shown is the real answer, that’s the, let’s get that out, I don’t know when it will be shown. I assume it will be shown sometime this summer. Could happen at any time though. It will be released this year [2024], last I heard. That is, and they’re pretty confident about that, doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee, could slip, but right now, internally, they expect to release it later this year, which is why I took it in Fantasy Critic”.

I'm more listening to The West Wing this time around because I'm working on some repetitive stuff. I'm on the inauguration in the 4th season and this exchange made me chuckle

other thing. other insane thing about how Arthur handles 38. not only does he suggest leaving Oscar basically the second John actually admits to not liking him. but also, almost immediately after the fight is resolved, he’s listening to pretty much everything John tells him to do. John wants to get the bestiary from the car, so Arthur does; John is the one who suggests opening the portal and throwing the stone through to hopefully banish Scratch, and Arthur not only agrees but also promises not to blame him if it goes sideways.

it’s like as soon as John is actually communicating “I think we should do this, here is my reasoning” rather than just railroading or manipulating him, Arthur’s trying to meet him there like he didn’t just get done using his faith and reliance on his eyes against him. it kinda feels like an extension of the thing he says abt “is it me that’s causing you to fail? Is it my lack of trust?” like he still sees this whole thing as half his own fault and is trying to make up for it. augh.

The Magnus Archives

So @tallangrycockatiel and @verbforverb picked some Season 2 (and one Season 3) episodes for me to listen to and give commentary on! We'll start with these two:

The New Door: I love this "shades of House of Leaves" type stuff whenever we get it in fiction. The idea that an entire other world is only a moment of curiosity away, and then you are lost forever in it. It's very Borges. Though, in guess i would describe House of Leaves as very Borges, too. The opening the cell phone to have just another picture of the corridor was a great touch.

If I was going to say there's a weakness to the story, for me, it's in the way it has to 'tie in' to the Season Villain instead of standing on its own. I find the idea of the house as its own malicious influence to be more personally compelling a la The House Next Door. That's unknowable, that's horrifying, and Michael is just a like, decent Sailor Moon villain.

(actually I will say that after hearing Jonathan and Michael's little tête-à-tête, I am potentially far more interested in this season's Big Cresting Arc than last season's, though really I just want this show to be adult Are You Afraid of the Dark. "There is no such thing as a real name" though, love that. Would mainline that.)

Personal Space: What does it mean to be emptily, heartbreakingly, alone? Truly alone. To know no one is coming and it is just you, for the rest of however long you live? I think that's fucking great. People pretend they like being alone more than they actually do. Anytime something is named after a myth, you need to be careful, they tried to get my ass up there in the "Daedalus" lol how bout you go fuck yourself? But that's the whole point, right, is you think you can master it, you think you can know enough about this to know how you'll react. You can't imagine that you've constructed your own hell. What seemed so simple has only ever been designed to break you.

I don't understand why Jonathan puts stock in this, though. As I recall, all throughout most of season one, he was like, "Found bags full of teeth? Eh, probably a gas line break." And I love that, so here where so much of it is so easily explained by "Fucking Isolation-based psychosis" we lack that level of distance in favor of name-dropping stuff from other episodes. Bummer.
