Kamaru Usman Taking All The Risk, But Chimaev Has More To Lose At UFC 294
youtube
I honestly think Kamaru Usman has rocks in his head for taking this fight on such short notice.
The idea that this is not the undisputed main event on the card, is even more bonkers, and the idea that the fight is sanctioned at middleweight is even worse.
Up to this point Kamaru has been much smarter about how and when he would take fights.
When he was ranked outside the top 10 he fought the most experienced guys like Maia, then he fought former champions and top 5 contenders once he was ranked top 10, and as champion he fought all the best contenders and some of them twice.
As champion Usman fought all the best guys, but to fight Chimaev at middleweight on short notice no less, is very unlike Kamaru Usman.
youtube
I have said several times that I do not think Khamzat Chimaev is a welterweight, and that's the reason why the original bout between him and Paulo Coasta was being contested at middleweight or heavier.
Chimaev will go in to this fight as favorite as a result but he will have far more at stake as far as his career is concerned because he is not moving up in weight like his opponent is, rather adjusting to a weight that is safer for him to compete at.
If he wins, people will say he beat a guy that was better at welterweight, but if he loses, he would have lost to a guy from a lower division, and at that point, how do you salvage the whole "boogeyman" aura?
It's a must-win postition for Chimaev.
Even trickier for Chimaev is that he has never fought a grappler on the level of Kamaru Usman, a guy who still holds the record for takedwon defense and still ranks in the top 5 for takedown offense in UFC history.
It's a serious test for both guys and a figth that honestly deserved a much better and longer build-up than what it's getting now.

Im now all caught up on the fights I care about from this past weekend so just gonna vomit words to record my thoughts.
Boxing
Chantelle Cameron and Mary McGee put on a hell of a fight. Dominant performance from Cameron but McGee’s determination and toughness were on full display. Really fun fight fought almost exclusively in the pocket with Cameron’s footwork and ability to get off centerline winning it out for her. McGee tried to pressure her but would eat a 4-5 punch combo before Cameron would pivot off the ropes and take the center again.
Jackie Nava really gave it to Mariana Barby Juarez. Just lit her up. Swam really well on the inside and was just the quicker smoother fighter. Sucks this fight came when they are both 41 but it was great to see it made. Two of Mexico’s greatest.
UFC 267
Ok, so a lot happened here.
Glover finally wins the big one. Was shocked by the result, as I’m sure a bunch of you are. Jan has been operating on all cylinders as of late and Glover has been basically knocked out in everyone of his previous 5 fights. But Glover keyed in on what Jacare and Rockhold were doing well on there fights. While neither could succeed in getting him down, they both got Jan to the fence very easily by pressuring. Glover, built on that idea by actually throwing punches and combos to force Jan to plant his feet and throw back. With no space to retreat to behind him, we even saw Glover manage to rock Jan. He used that threat to duck under and secure takedowns along the fence which eventually led to the RNC. Another feel good story at 205. Good for Glover.
Petr Yan vs Cory Sandhagen was the best fight of 2021 in MMA imo. Just a technical MasterClass between two of the best strikers in the sport now. And honestly, I feel safe saying Yan is the best doing it right now. His ability to pick up reads mid fight and change tact accordingly is Aldo-esque. Man keyed in on Sandhagen’s footwork after 5-7 minutes of fighting and just started feinting the feinter into big strikes. There’s a brilliant sequence where Sandhagen ducks under and tries to step around a jab from Yan and Yan switches stances and counters with a hook off his new lead hand. Just gorgeous. Might go deeper into this one.
Islam Makhachev did terrible things to Dan Hooker. Honestly not too surprised. Hooker seems to have a problem with directionality when he faces wrestlers (see Chandler fight). Soon as he started moving backwards, it was over. Got taken down off a bad leg kick attempt and promptly subbed. There’s not a lot of great top control grapplers at the top of this division with Khabib gone. It’s like Do Bronx and Chandler. That’s basically it. Big hole in the meta for Makhachev to fill.
Similar to Islam, Chimaev was basically being sent out there to bury the Leech. And he did. Doesn’t tell us anything new but seeing Chimaev healthy after his bout with Covid was a good sign. I’m sold on him as a contender at 170lbs as long as he can make the weight.
Magomed Ankalaev took a pretty one sided win over Oezdemir. It was probably my favorite showing from Ankalaev to date. I think it was one of those things where Oez’s preferred range played right into Ankalaev’s hands. As I said last week, Ankalaev has a very paired down simple game based around big 1-2-3 strike combos. Mostly the 2-3 or the 3-2. It worked here as Oez was always right at the beginning of punching range and basically flurried into big shots.
Ribas looked good against Jandiroba. Still has to work on not just charging in chin up. Got dropped in round 1.
Tukhugov-Ramos was a fantastic fight. We saw a much more aggressive, presuming Tukhugov. Problem is for Tuk is there isn’t much build to his game, even as he’s moved to the front foot. Fantastic jab. Great at bouncing out of range and countering. But not much volume. That’s what really kept Ramos in this fight. A tad similar actually to Yan-Sandhagen.
Lerone Murphy knee was excellent after a round underneath Makwan Amirkhani. Exactly what you want to see a prospect do after surviving a tough round. Made a read, feinted the jab and threw the knee as Makwan shot.
Ref from the Zaleski-Saint fight should be jailed. One of the worst non-stoppages I’ve ever seen.
Fun weekend of fights

Khamzat Chimaev’s coach calls out BJJ black belts
Khamzat Chimaev has had a very successful start to his mixed martial arts career. His UFC 279 win over Kevin Holland improved his record to 12-0. While Chimaev was surrounded by controversy all week leading up to the fight, he was able to put on a breathtaking performance in the octagon. Kevin Holland deserves all the credit in the world for accepting an unenviable assignment on last minute…

UFC 287: Adesanya VS Pereira 2 Preview

I am getting really tired of these “hole in my stomach” feelings heading into these UFC fights and I can only hope that Kamaru Usman was the worst of it.
Israel Adesanya is my final hope.
At one time 3 African fighters held championships in the UFC, and now none do. Adesanya’s UFC 287 rematch represents the last hope to restore some glory to the continent, and it couldn’t be against a worse opponent.
youtube
For all intents and purposes, Alex Pereira is a beast. Every time I see him, he reminds me of Tong-Po, from the Jan Claude Van Damme movies because he is an absolute villain and a beast of a fighter.
However, the fact that he’s a beast, is exactly the problem.
Several people within MMA, as well as anyone with eyes in their head, knows that Alex Pereira is not a natural middleweight.
The reality is that, for the 3rd time Adesanya is being matched up with a guy that’s the size of a light heavyweight, and that’s what the UFC has resorted to in order to find some way to displace arguably the greatest middleweight of all time.
youtube
What this brings in to question, is how much should a fighter be allowed to cut weight.
As good a Pereira looks, I have him placed alongside Khamzat Chimaev in the category of weight bully fighters, who really should be competting in heavier weight divisions but are able to cut weight to be considered middleweight and welterweight respectively.
I have no interest in watching weight bully nonsense.
Take for instance, the boy, Jon Jones, I have mixed feelings about Jon Jones personally, but he did move up in weight to compete at heavy.
The issue with expecting everyone to do that, is that, gianing weight or moving up, takes longer than losing weight or cutting weight. It’s an issue others have pondered and Chael Sonnen has gone as far as to call it sanctioned cheating, when a fighter is cutting too much weight and essentially giving themselves an edge provided they can maintain a certain level of strength and conditioning.

And to add another layer, there is the actual history between Adesanya and Pereira, a history that spans almost 10 years in 2 different combat disciplines.
The stat that obviously haunts the Adesanya fans, like myself, going in to this one is the fact that Adesanya is 0-3 against Pereira throughout thier pro careers in Kickboxing and MMA.
That’s the issue here. Alex Pereira takes away, or at the very least evens out the advantage Izzy usually has in in the stand-up game.
Jorge Masvidal was on the Joe Rogan podcast, and he noted Pereira’s size and how that serves to also negates the takedown option as far as Izzy is concerned. In the same interview, Jorge Masvidal also talks about the difference in speed and power when you are moving up in weight.
Personally, I have a bunch of issues with this.
Alex Pereira has a 7-1 record in MMA, and I honestly think his road to a championship opportunity was shortnened by the fact that Izzy was the champ in his division and he beat him in Kickboxing.
Pereira has not beaten any of the other top middleweights in the division and while I think that has more to do with match making and the UFC maintaining fan interest by ensuring new fights in the event of a Pereira victory, it’s a shortcut for sure.
The stats from thier first encounter at UFC 281 paint a slightly more rosy picture, and show Izzy winning the 2nd, 3rd round and 4th rounds after and even first round, before Pereira pulls off one of the great 5th round come backs in UFC history.
Adesanya, during his press conference on Wednesday, showed full awareness of how he needed to keep the pressure in in every round, and also fully aware that this is probably his last title shot for a long time.

SPORT: Adesanya unimpressed by Chimaev
Publish date: 2022-09-13 00:11:30 | Author: Peter Akinbo | Source: punchng.com As impressive as Khamzat Chimaev’s performance was at UFC 279, UFC Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya is notably unimpressed by the display saying he is still a “b*tch.” On Sunday, Chimaev extended his perfect professional record to 12-0 in a matchup that was just one day in the making. Li "The Leech" Jingliang @lijingliangmma fights Muslim Salikhov this weekend in what should be a banger of a fight 💥 I'm not seeing enough people talking about this fight! So I thought I'd make a post on The Leech since I have him winning 👊 🪱Has been in the UFC since 2014 🪱 Has finished 72% of his victories 🪱 Record of 17-8 🪱 Never been knocked out The Leech is the real deal, and he's a betting underdog this weekend against Salikhov. I think this is just recency bias since the Chimaev loss, but that loss aged really well! Keep an eye on the Leech this weekend 👀 #theleech #ufc #mma #combat #fight #boxing #kickboxing #wrestling #ufcfightnight #bjj #muaythai https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf9BGYojD9-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Khamzat Chimaev verbally agrees to next fight with UFC’s top contender for Fight Island in October
UFC sensation Khamzat Chimaev seems to have secured his next fight inside the octagon. The 11-0 welterweight with 10 finishes on his record last fought in a Fight of the Year contender against Gilbert Burns in April, but now he is targeting fights in Abu Dhabi in October. UFC 267: Jan Blachowicz vs. Glover Teixeira live updates, results, highlights

The UFC returns to Abu Dhabi on Saturday for UFC 267 where Jan Blachowicz will defend his light heavyweight championship against Glover Teixeira.
UFC 267 also marks the first non pay-per-view numbered event in the United States since UFC 138 back in 2011. But just because it is a free show, don’t think that it’s lacking in some fantastic fights.
MORE: Everything you need to know about UFC 267
Aside from the main event, UFC 267 will also see Petr Yan and Cory Sandhagen square off for the interim bantamweight championship and the right to face current champion Aljamain Sterling when he’s able to return to action.
Blachowicz returns to action for the first time since his unanimous decision victory over Israel Adesanya back in March. It will be the second defense of his title since claiming the vacant crown when he stopped Dominick Reyes in September 2020. With Jon Jones moving up to heavyweight permanently, Blachowicz will have the opportunity to carve out his legacy in the 205-pound division. But standing in his way will be Teixeira, who comes into another title matchup riding a five-fight winning streak.
The last time Teixeira was in this position, he had won 20 fights in a row before dropping a unanimous decision to Jon Jones in 2014. After suffering his first loss in nearly a decade, Teixeira struggled with a 5-4 record before righting the ship and positioning himself back into title contention.
Can the 41-year-old realize his dream to become UFC champion, or will Blachowicz put another contender away as he attempts to make a run at being one of the best light heavyweight champions in UFC history?
Sporting News will provide live updates and highlights from UFC 267. Follow along right here.

UFC 267 live updates, highlights from Blachowiz vs. Teixeira
(All times Eastern)
Islam Makhachev submits Dan Hooker in one round
3:49 p.m.: The lightweight division is officially on notice because Islam Makhachev is here to cause problems for the division. Everyone knew what Makhachev was going to do but Hooker had no chance to stop it. It didn’t take long for Makhachev to get Hooker on his back and the rest was elementary. Makhachev methodically moved into position to trap Hooker’s arm, stepped over with his right leg and torqued a kimura lock that caused the submission. If it’s feeling like the path that Khabib took to become champion, yeah, you’re right. It is.
Alexander Volkov uses striking to turn back Marcin Tybura’s constant pressure with unanimous decision
Scores: 30-27, 30-27, 29-28
3:30 p.m.: The final round saw Tybura continue to apply pressure with striking and takedown attempts but Volkov refused to allow fatigue to be the difference-maker. Instead, Volkov landed strikes from a distance and, eventually, saw Tybura’s gas tank fail him. It was close but Volkov’s superior striking and ability to stay upright appears to give him the victory.
3:24 p.m.: It appears that Tybura’s pressure beginning to weigh on Volkov. Through two rounds, Tybura refuses to give his opponent room to breathe despite being unable to secure a takedown. But it’s clear that Volkov is wearing down and it could give him the opening he needs to get the finish.
3:18 p.m.: Volkov’s size is making a significant difference as Tybura has been unable to get him to the mat or be effective striking from a distance. Tybura won’t stop coming forward but he’ll need a new entry point in order to close the distance and make this competitive.
Khamzat Chimaev dominates, submits Li Jingliang in one round
2:53 p.m.: The hype is real. Khamzat Chimaev was forced out of action due to COVID and there was curiosity whether or not he’d be able to keep the remarkable momentum he started last year. Well, Chimaev hasn’t missed a beat. Chimaev swept under Li and immediately slammed him to the canvas in the first minute of action. From there, he worked Li over until he got his opponent’s back, flattened him out and began raining down punches. Li struggled to defend himself and soon found Chimaev’s bicep wrapped around his throat. Li tried to survive but Chimaev switched grips and choked him to sleep.
This man is scary and a title opportunity may not be too far away.
Magomed Ankalaev makes easy work of Volkan Oezdemir with unanimous decision
Scores: 30-27, 30-27 & 29-28
2:36 p.m.: This was easy work for Ankalaev, who is absolutely a threat to the upper echelon of the light heavyweight division. Oezdemir is a former title contender but was made to be nothing more than a speed bump on Ankalaev’s road to a championship. He was too fast, too sharp and just too good as he dissected his opponent to a unanimous decision.
2:23 p.m.: Volkan Oezdemir is struggling with Ankalaev’s speed. After some early moments when Oezdemir used his size and strength, Ankalaev adjusted and has been carving up his opponent in the standup. Oezdemir is going to have to make this ugly in order for it to be competitive.
2:07 p.m.: It’s time for the UFC 267 main card after an extremely violent series of prelims. Can the main card build on that momentum?
