A detail i love in golden kamuy is that asirpa is Olympic gold medalists in the art of guilt tripping. She can and will use that to her advantage against sugimoto and the others. It works on nearly anyone she will make you say hinna hinna and chant chitatap while you work.
The only person she can’t seem to persuade is Ogata because he does not feel guilt. There are no heartstrings for her to pull and play. No conscience that tells him not to disappoint the little girl and make her sad. Nothing.
To guilt trip someone they have to have the ability to feel guilt.

Y'know what's a weird thing that I want for Persona 6, that I think could be exciting to include given the possible theme of modernity vs tradition, or technology vs nature?
A character that's apart of the Ainu.
(***PLEASE NOTE, my knowledge of the Ainu people and their culture is fairly limited, so I will link down below some articles where you can learn more if you're interested!)
If you didn't know (because a surprisingly LARGE amount of people don't know about them), Japan has their own version of indigenous tribes, who have existed long before the establishment of modern Japan or even the monarchy.
One of these includes the indigenous peoples known as the Ainu, an ethnic group native to northern Japan, including Hokkaido, Northeast Honshu, as well as some territories and islands connected to Russia like the Kuril Islands, the Kamchatka Penisula, Sakhalin, and the Khabarovsk Krai.
While there is little history about their existence, we do know that the Ainu peoples are related to the Emishi, their ancestors, who during the 9th century came under Japanese subjugation and were pushed from their native lands to the north. Over the passing centuries, the Emishi and Ainu were treated with disrespect by both the early Japanese, who were known as Wa-jin, and later colonized by the more established dynasties that proceeded during the 17th century and beyond.
Today currently, there official population of the Ainu within Japan are around 25,000, but may actually be around 200,000 or more, due to the near-total assimilation into Japanese society, cutting off many individuals from knowing of their Ainu ancestry. Despite this though, the Ainu culture and their language somewhat prominent within their respective communities and continue to thrive, despite their dwindling numbers of the years.
In recent years, the culture has become a bit more well-known due to the fairly popular manga known as "Golden Kamuy", created by Satoru Noda and serialized from 2018 to 2022. The story is set after the Russo-Japanese war, where our main protagonist, Saichi Sugimoto, is a surviivng veteran of this war.
After learning about the possibility of a large cache of gold existing in Hokkaido, Sugimoto is nearly killed by the man who told him, but is saved from not only death by the man but also by a bear through the aid of a young Ainu girl named Asirpa. Together, the two of them form a very close friendship as they begin their complicated and dangerous journey to find the cache of gold, while collecting the tattooed map of the location of the cache.
The manga heavily focuses around the exploration of the Ainu culture, interweaving it with the plot of the manga, making it a very prominent and important topic within the story. Besides Asirpa, there are multiple Ainu characters that support the main cast, as well as many scenes exploring and discussing the culture of the Ainu and how the industrialization of Japan has affected their way of life.
One of my favorite scenes between Sugimoto and Asirpa is when she teaches him about some of their cuisine, in particular chitatap (or citatap), a dish made with the the raw meat of animals or fish that is chopped into fine chunks. Admittedly, Sugimoto is a bit worried about the idea of eating raw meat, but over the course of the story begins to fall in love with the dish to the point of obsessing over it.
Alongside that, there are also a few other representations too of the culture, such as the utilization of Ainu terms like "hinna" to express delight, the belief of "kamuy" or spirits in nature, or the tradition of Ainu women tattooing their lips! You can FEEL the authors love for the subject and wanting to let the wider world know about the existence of the Ainu, even though he might not be one himself.
So, why have an Ainu character? Well, for one, I think it would be a very interesting commentary upon some of the more complicated subjects that Japanese culture faces, and give a bit of representation to the tribe by having either a party member or supporting character within the town.
Persona is no stranger to dealing with complicated subjects and topics that are often shied away from in most JRPGS, notably SA, sexual harassment, depression, grief, struggling with ones own identity, sexuality, gender, and much more. The topic of the struggle of being indigenous not only in a judgmental and oppressive situation, but also a growing chokehold from the modern world as technology takes over, would be a very interesting thing to explore and provide one of many points of view upon the subject.
Its no question that many indigenous communities, including many in the United States, have been heavily affected by the growth of cities and the gentrification of areas, losing more and more of their territories everyday while backed into a corner. By writing about this, not only could the Persona team discuss the effects of the destruction of nature, but also the effects that it may have on smaller communities, be it indigenous tribes or merely small villages that exist outside the limits of cities!
So, whether or not this could happen, I think it'd be a really cool concept for Persona to explore and have, even if it might not take a center stage in the overall story!

kind of late reply to my last ask (oripa au anon) lol but—i’d love to hear your thoughts on why fandom struggles with asirpa’s characterisation if you’re willing to talk about it :) also yeah ogata is very much a voyeur when it comes to the two objects of his affection interacting. i have quite a vivid mental image of him watching from a distance as yuusaku tries to kiss asirpa goodnight outside of some tea house they were on a “date” at and just walking off afterwards and throwing up in the bushes (he’ll blame it on the sake)
Haha I agree with most of what you proposed, except I don’t see Yuusaku taking up the initiative, even for ppl he likes lol, and especially not with Asirpa. I think the one who ended up initiating most intimate contact is Asirpa, bc unless she did it first Yuusaku would be too polite to make a move.
As for Asirpa’s mischaracterization, rant undercut
I think most ppl fear going deep into her character because of the implications it brings
I see a lot of fans overcompensate for how uncomfortable the implications are by calling her dynamic with Sugimoto, for example, “father-daughter” or “siblings”. It reinforces heteronormative ideas of nuclear family dynamic, which is reductive as fuck for what their characters’ journeys represent.
Putting aside the fact that she’s way more competent and emotionally mature than him, ppl don’t wanna confront the fact that the men in the series disrespected Asirpa’s agency a lot (yes even Sugimoto is responsible for this). Noda even wrote an entire chapter where Shiraishi gave Sugimoto a ted talk abt it.
Noda said he doesn’t like violence against women and children but just bc he didn’t depict it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Ogata was gonna shoot her point blank bc she annoys him. Tsurumi had what might be a mental breakdown near the end of the story then called her “Wilk”, and we all know how much Tsurumi hated Wilk.
I won’t touch on the chitatap and 💩 obsessed Asirpa, she is the bane of my existence and I refuse to acknowledge such character assasination.
I don’t have a problem with ppl who don’t wanna touch on things like these, I respect that some topics are difficult and triggering to a lot of ppl. Unfortunately, the effect is that some will dismiss these and ended up reinforcing what the story has been criticizing
Tldr: Ppl dismiss Asirpa by pushing her into the sister/daughter role, which is counterproductive to the point of Asirpa’s character and reinforce heteronormativity. Chitatap and shit obsessed Asirpa is hot doo doo garbage of a joke that overstayed its welcome

Blood and gold
Tumblr media
Part 2 part 3
No tw yet and spoilers
I was always a loner choosing to stay by myself instead of staying in a group. The war had made me a bit paranoid of other people. Besides, you lost your family because of it. I was 14 so finding work is a bit difficult, while i could work in a factory or mine it never peaked my interest, so, for now I just walk around my hometown doing favors for food hoping to find something interesting. During one of my walks, i heard a group of soldiers talking about a rumor. "From what I've heard, there is a ton of gold." One of the soldiers whispered to the other. "From what I know, the map to the gold is tattooed of criminal's skin." After that, nothing else the soldiers said was helpful. This got me very interested, that much gold could give me a comfortable life and I can even start a business to help my town. But I need more info or I won't get anywhere, so, I stalked the soldiers to see if they could give me more information. Though they didn't give me any helpful, however, i have found another lead. Another soldier was looking for people with strange tattoos and he was joined by a black haired girl. So I started to stalk them as I heard that they had some skins made I could steal them, However as I followed them into the woods I quickly lost sight of them. I started to panic as I lost the only lead I'll get about the gold. But I didn't have to wait too long as I heard a sound behind me, And the soldier was glaring down at me. I could tell that he was annoyed and a little angry. "Why are you following us?" He asked shortly. I looked around to see if there was an escape but I saw the girl aiming the bow at me, so I decided to be honest. "I'm looking for clues to help me find the gold...." I said timidly not seeing the point in lying, which surprised the two people. They looked at each other then back at me. "Go back home, trying to find the gold is dangerous." The girl said in a more concerned tone. "I know that but I want to do this, I just want a small amount of the gold if that is a concern." I said thinking that was the issue. Silence surrounded us before the soldier sighed. "Fine but if we think that you aren't fit for this we're dropping you off at the nearest town." This surprised me and the girl. "Are you sure that is a good idea?" The girl said sounding suspicious, which was understandable. "They don't look look that strong so they might not cause much damage. My name is sugimoto by the way." He said sounding more friendly which made me happy, though I needed be of use so I can help find the gold."I'm (y/n)" I said before the said and i quickly walked over. "Do you have a knife?" I nodded and pulled out a large knife. "Do you need it?" I asked a bit confused but asirpa shook her head. "No you're going to mince the meat." She then handed me a knife. "Alright..." I said as took the knife and started to mince the meat. "You're supposed to say chitatap as you mince the meat." I was surprised but I did as I was told. "chitatap, chitatap, chitatap...." I repeated as I minced the meat, after a bit it was finished and I watched the two start to cook the meat. It has been awhile since I've had a meal with anyone so it was nice. When the food was cooked I waited for the two to get food before I got some for myself Sugimoto noticed this. "Are you not hungry?" I looked at him a bit embarrassed."Well I usually wait for others to eat before I do. I didn't help catch the rabbit so I think you two should get more." This was a habit of mine. Surprisingly sugimoto put some food to my mouth. "You need to eat." I didn't fight so I started eating. "hinna, hinna." Asirpa said."what does hinna mean?" I asked curiously. "It is expression of gratitude for the food." I nodded as sugimoto started to say hinna. "Hinna...." I said quietly as I ate. Soon I heard rustling
Behind me, so I attempted to stab the noise near me. Only for sugimoto to yell. "Wait! He's not an enemy!" So I stopped and looked behind me to see a man with gray hair who looked terrified. Asirpa chuckled a little and sugimoto put distance between me and the man. "His name is Shiraishi, and he is an alley. And Shiraishi, this is (y/n) they will be joining us." Shiraishi looked terrified at almost being stabbed, so he moved to sit near asirpa. "So, did you find any more info?" Sugimoto said, sitting next to me. "Not nothing new." I thought for a second. "How many skins do you have?" I asked curiously. I had no idea how far sugimoto's group got. "Four so far, and I think we got some attention." I assume other people are looking for the gold. "Well, if needed, I could go into towns for you so you guys don't get spotted." I offered as it was the one thing I thought I could be useful for. Sugimoto thought for a minute before talking. "Not yet. we don't know if you can handle yourself." I was a little irritated, but I could understand why. "Maybe I can go with someone then? I don't want to not make myself useful." Sugimoto seemed to understand, but asirpa was a little worried. "But if you're seen with us, you'll be in danger." I just shrugged. "I couldn't just say that I don't know you and was just traveling. People won't expect a child." The three just looked at me like I was insane. "Um....." was the only thing Shiraishi said while pointing at asirpa. "Ok, typical child." I clarified sugimoto finally spoke. "Fine, but you're only going with me." I nodded at sugimoto. Soon, the area around us fell silent, only broken by my yawn. I was about to get up to find a place to sleep, but sugimoto wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me closer to him. Which felt odd, but I allowed him to keep me thare, and I eventually fell asleep. Not knowing what chaos I'm getting myself into.
