M.C Escher - Tessellation (LO1)

Tessellation is a shape that repeats to make a pattern

3 basic shapes tessellates - triangles, hexagons and squares

3 rules are translation, rotation and glide reflection

Escher used geometric grids to form intricate interlocking designs

represents the coming together of mathematics and art

regular patterns that help split a plane into tiles, leaving no gaps or overlaps

fitting together of replicas of the same basic shape

based on symmetry

Circle Limit III is a woodcut made in 1959

"strings of fish shoot up like rockets from infinitely far away and then fall back again whence they came"

accurate representation of space as it edges to infinity, confirmed by mathematicians to be accurate to the last millimetre
